Schizophrenia – Chapter 19

Chapter 19. Enjoy!

From the Library she headed straight back to the dorm. She sensed some inquisitive gazes from the students she passed along the way, but she ignored them all. If they came to talk to her, she would give a reply, but she had no obligation to respond to simply being looked at. When she entered her room in the dorm, she was greeted by Alisa’s bow.

“Welcome back, Mistress Lilia.”

“I’m back. …Were you in this room the entire time?”

“Yes. That is so?”

“It would’ve been fine to go out somewhere too you know.”

“I had not received permission so…”

Quite the inflexible one, thought Lilia with a slight frown, when Sakura gave a wry laugh.

—It’s the first day back after all. She probably stayed in the room to be ready so that you could return at any time right. Well, it’s also true that she didn’t receive any permission, but even if she did, she probably would have stayed here the whole day anyways.

—Am I really that unreliable?

—Yup. After two weeks of being a shut-in, you can’t really refute that can you.

—Muu…

Since she thought that it was just as Sakura said, she couldn’t rebut. She already had a precedent for becoming a shut-in, so Alisa was bound to be worried.

—Besides, you actually did skip out on class too huh!

—That was… No, you’re right.

—Yaaai, you delinquent~

—Oh shut up.

She returned her gaze to Alisa. Alisa was worriedly looking at Lilia.

“Alisa. I’ll be fine. You can feel free to go out from tomorrow on okay.”

“Is, that so?”

“Yes. Well then, I’ll be studying in the bedroom. Could you call me if there’s anything?”

“Certainly.”

Sent off with a bow by Alisa, Lilia entered the bedroom. Closing the door, she headed for the table at the corner of the room. The bookshelf beside the table was probably organised by Alisa, as the learning materials were neatly arranged by subject.

—Sakura. I’ll be counting on you today as well.

—Alri~ght. Get out the pap~er, get out the pe~n, let’s give it our a~ll!

Lilia did as instructed and placed paper and a pen on the table, and while hearing Sakura’s energetic voice, a slight smile leaked out on on her face.

She was putting down Sakura’s words on the paper. What she was being taught, currently, was arithmetic. Within arithmetic there was something called an abacus, and listening to random numbers from Sakura, Lilia was calculating the sums in her head. Since they couldn’t prepare the tool Sakura talked about, all of the calculation was done with a mental image instead.

—Lilia. Someone’s here.

Lilia lifted her head upon hearing Sakura’s words. Turning over the paper with various numbers written on it, she turned towards the door. A knock immediately followed.

“Mistress Lilia. There is a visitor.”

Lilia frowned in doubt. There shouldn’t have been anyone in the school who’d come to visit her. Previously she did have some ‘followers’ of sorts around, but since coming back, there hadn’t been any sign of them either.

“Who?”

“It’s Mistress Tina.”

Lilia eyes widened in surprise. They had just met in the morning after all, so she hadn’t expected her to come visit already. What purpose could she possibly have come for?

—No you see Lilia, you can’t be wondering about purpose and stuff. You’re friends right?

—What are you talking about, this is the upper class nobles’ floor after all, it’s not a place you can come to just for the reason of ‘vising a friend’ you know.

—No, but… Huh? Did Lilia just make more sense than me!? Oh the disgrace!

—Hey what are you trying to imply here.

While feeling somewhat dissatisfied from Sakura’s remark, Lilia stood from her seat. She went with Alisa to the door of the room. Opening the door, there stood a nervous looking Tina.

“Mistr… Lilia. Good evening.”

Still having trouble with the honorifics, thought Lilia, though she decided to not say anything since at least she caught herself midway this time.

“Good evening, Tina. Is there some matter?”

“It can’t really be called a matter but… If you’d like, want to have dinner, together?”

“That’s… I don’t mind, but is that okay for you?”

“Yup. Of course. I shouldn’t need anyone’s permission to have dinner with a friend right?”

One way or another, she was starting to see the reason why the Prince came to like this girl. Getting along with someone from the prideful noble bunch in the first place was impossible, but even if that wasn’t the case, this girl was probably very easy to get along with regardless.

“Alright. Shall we go? Ah but that was just secondary right? The real topic is?”

“Eh? Real topic? What?”

Seeing Tina adorably tilt her head slightly to the side in confusion, Lilia cheeks twitched. She was aware of Alisa smiling wryly behind her. For some reason she felt a little embarrassed, and her cheeks became tinted slightly red.

—Fu. So what I said was correct after all. My win.

—Ha?

—Wai-that’s scary Lilia! I was just kidding!

Lilia clicked her tongue with a ‘tsk’ in her thoughts, and ‘hii-‘, Sakura let out a frightened voice. Leaving that Sakura alone, Lilia affixed a smile to her face.

“Sorry, please don’t worry about it. Shall we go?”

Tina let out a sigh of relief and nodded ‘yes’.

I’m the Final Boss!? – Chapter 3

Out of the Frying Pan, into the Fire!

Unedited

I’ll have you know I don’t intend to die so easily!

Well, I’m all bark and no bite though.
I’m still just a baby.
It’s not like I suddenly grew up and became strong enough to defeat this wolf.
Regardless, I still don’t want to die, so can you not kill me, Wolfie?
I’m trying to make myself seem as harmless as possible here.
(Not like that’s too difficult though)

Anyway, this wolf is really starting to make me nervous.
It’s just standing there… staring at me.

Hmm.
I guess it’s time to break out my ace in the hole then.
If I succeed, then I’ll be safe.
However, if I fail …
Just don’t fail then, me.

Resolving myself, I muster all of the strength in this powerless body of mine, and shout out towards the heavens.

“Ugyah!”

Perfect.
In response to my warrior spirit, the wolf jumps a bit.
Hm, that’s not as good a reaction as I would have liked though.
At the very least, the wolf is starting to move around more now.
I wonder what it intends to do?
It’s pacing around, but it doesn’t seem to have any intention of attacking me.
Could it be thinking about something I wonder?

Hm, well, as long as it’s not going to attack me, I don’t need to worry about it.
I just wish someone would come along and pick me up.
I’m starting to get a little hungry.
It’s also starting to get a little cold.

Aoooh~

Hm?
Wolfie started to howl.
Could it be calling for backup?
This isn’t good.
I obviously saved myself with that shout earlier, but when its backup gets here, I’d be defenseless again.

Awoooooo~

Ah, a reply.
I suppose it was a bit much to think there would only be one wolf in this forest.
However, that reply isn’t the only thing that responds to this wolf’s howl.

Grabu!
Ooloo?
Grabulu!
Grabu!
Gra!
Buluu!

Although the voices sounded distant, even Wolfie looked a bit nervous hearing all the rough noises.
They sound familiar, but I’m not too sure where I remember this sound.
I don’t end up waiting too long though, because as I’m trying my hardest to remember the sound, I hear all kinds of noise heading in our direction.
Even the ground was shaking a bit.
Not long after that, a horde of goblins break into the small clearing.

I hope you called in some powerful backup, Wolfie, because this situation is a bi~t dangerous.
Actually, if I think about it, based on how easily Wolfie dealt with Goblin A from earlier, it might be able to escape.
So … doesn’t that mean I’m the only one in any real danger here!?
Awawa, don’t leave me Wolfie!

However, contrary to my panicked thoughts, Wolfie only gets into a guard.
It’s as if this wolf intends to fight this horde…
I know I’m not particularly in a position to criticize here, Wolfie, but isn’t this horde too much to fight alone?
There’s at least twenty of them in this clearing, and if I focus I can almost make out the shape of more in the surrounding forest.

Wait a minute, why are there so many goblins here!?
Their response was a bit too quick for them to have gathered this many numbers.
Do they move in groups or something?
In that case, why was Goblin A all by itself?

Hm, for some reason my head hurts a little.
This shouldn’t have caused it though.
I feel like I’ve thought about things much harder than this, and yet never got any pain from it.
Huh, strange.
Well, since thinking hurts my head apparently, I won’t bother with it.
Goblin A was just there because he was, and this horde is here because they are, and Wolfie will fight both because of some reason.

Ah, I feel much better now.
It’s as if a weight has been lifted from my tiny body.
Now, go Wolfie!
Fight!

As if it could read my thoughts, Wolfie begins to move.
It seems it’ll be taking the initiative this time.
Good.
With so many enemies, it’d be arrogant if you let them attack first, Wolfie.
Now, slowly, ever so slowly, single out the weakest one and then strike!

Ignoring the me who is shouting out from time to time, Wolfie continues to guard.
It seems as if Wolfie is intent on waiting for its backup.
Can’t you let me have my fun though?
Bah, no fun, Wolfie.

I really should stop thinking things like this though.
After all, it seems like every time I do, something happens.
For example, right now, the ground is shaking again, but this time it’s the goblins who look nervous.

I have to wonder what would cause a horde of this size to be so nervous.
Could these wolves be the bosses of the forest, and they’re all coming here to back up this one wolf!?
Uwah, impressive, Wolfie.
A new respect for you has blossomed within my chest.
I still won’t let you eat me though.

At this point, Wolfie has stopped being so on-guard, and is now looking in the direction of the noise.
Unfortunately, the noise is directly behind me, and I don’t have enough strength to tilt my neck in order to see what’s coming.

Suddenly, the ground shakes more violently than it has so far and I hear a ferocious growl.
It’s to the point where I don’t think a simple onomatopoeia would be enough to cover the intensity of this thing.
Regardless, it’s intense enough for the goblins, and they all run as far away from this clearing as they can.
Hehe, some of them are even tripping over themselves to get away.

In truth, I know that this is just me distracting myself from what is about to come, but at least it’s funny.
If I’m going to die, I want to go out with a smile on my face.
So now, although I don’t want to die, I’m prepared, so do your worst, wolves!
I’ve been alone for longer than I can remember, death is sweet compared to a hell like that!

Hahaha~
Hahaha
Haha
Hah
Hah?

Hm…
What’s going on?
Plenty of time has gone by.
Why have I not felt the friendly hand of death?
Cautiously, I open one of my eyes a fraction.

“Uwah…”

However, at the scene in front of me, my eyes go wide and I can’t help but let out a word in shock.
After all, although Wolfie is still there in front of me, there’s also a rea~lly tall woman standing with it.
I also can’t feel anything behind me anymore, but whatever it was, it couldn’t have been this woman.
That growl was too powerful to come from a person.
Eeh!?
W-what’s going on?

These are the last thoughts I have before my surroundings go dark.

Schizophrenia – Chapter 18

Not much to say. Life still hellish busy. Guess I’m finding some motivation to translate now from a rekindled interesting in reading novels. As author said in the previous chapter’s note, the story will be quite relaxed for a while. So, story might get a bit slow for some, but please hang in there, it’s definitely worth reading all of it! (If I’ll ever finish translating)
Enjoy chapter 18

Saying so, Lilia made to walk past the boy. However, before she passed by him, the boy held out something to her. Seeing the thing, it turned out to be a small handkerchief.

“What?”

“Well… It seemed like you had been crying so… If you’d like, please use it.”

Here not only Lilia, but Sakura as well was surprised. Wondering if he somehow, actually didn’t know anything about Lilia.

“You… Really don’t know who I am?”

Asking him directly, the boy only tilted his head in response.

“Have we perhaps met somewhere before?”

Hearing that, Lilia was momentarily dumbfounded, and then a smile involuntarily leaked out on her face.
Thinking for a moment, she said,

“I’m Lilia. It’s nice to meet you.”

“Ah, umm… Ray, here.”

It seemed like he had noticed that Lilia was leaving out her family name for some reason, so Ray too didn’t attach his surname.

“Ray huh. I’ll make sure to remember. Well then I’ll be… What is it?”

As she was heading for the exit, Lilia’s feet quickly came to a halt. Lilia’s sleeve was gently being held onto by Ray. When Lilia tilted her head, Ray said with upturned eyes,

“That is… Would you like to talk for just a little bit? Being by myself is sort of lonely…”

Then just return to your own class, thought Lilia, but even she probably wouldn’t just say such a thing out loud.

Lilia herself wasn’t really in the condition to return to class, so it wouldn’t be bad to keep him company. Lilia concluded so and nodded with an ‘Alright’.

Though it was her first time entering the room, she had heard about this place before. Prepared for purposes like collaborative research and for people who wanted to study by themselves, ten of these rooms were lined up in a hallway connected from the library. To use these rooms one would have to request it beforehand, but starting last year, she had heard something about how one room was continuously in use by someone. That was probably referring to this room.
On the table reference texts and books on various things were arranged. Ray put the book he brought back on a corner of the table and retrieved a single chair from a stack and placed it before Lilia.

“Here you go.”

“Thanks.”

Thanking him she sat down. Ray sat down facing Lilia there.

—Seems like this is where he really studies huh.

With Sakura’s voice, Lilia brought her gaze to the learning materials arranged on the table. They were the same things as what she had been using a year ago. It seems that he was only one year younger than Lilia. As she stretched out to reach for the reference book, Ray flusteredly said,

“S-sorry, it hasn’t been tidied…! I’ll get to it immediately!”

“It’s fine, no worries. So you study by yourself here?”

“Yes… That’s right.”

Ray slumped back down as he answered. As Lilia was flipping through the reference book, she stealthily sent her gaze to the paper in front of Ray. The notebook there was opened, and questions full of blank answers were written inside.

“So there are parts you don’t get here?”

Eh, Ray let out an idiotic voice, and quickly noticing that the notebook he left lying open had been seen, he frantically began to clean it up.

“Sorry I’m so sorry! I’ve shown you such an unsightly…!”

“It’s quite alright. Rather, how’s the studying?”

“Uhmm… Yes, there are some parts that I don’t really understand…”

“Please show me.”

And so, the notebook that Ray was going to tidy up was quite naturally plundered by Lilia. Looking inside, she began to confirm the places left blank. With an I see, Lilia quickly closed the notebook.

“I’ll teach you.”

“Eh?”

“It’ll probably serve to kill some time. I will teach you. Please open your reference book.”

Returning the notebook with those words, Ray was speechless as his mouth hung open. Lilia felt just a slight bit irritated at the state Ray was in and tapped the table with her finger.

“Quickly please.”

“Ye, yes!”

Ray hurriedly opened the reference book. Lilia moved beside Ray, looked at the questions, and thus began to explain.

—Un. The heck is this.

No one gave an answer to Sakura’s muttering.

“Let’s leave it at this for today.”

When Lilia said so and closed the reference book, Ray let out a sigh of relief. Seeing that Lilia narrowed her eyes, and as she was about to open her mouth,

—This is your fault, forcing him to study six hours straight without any breaks though? You shouldn’t be getting angry alright?

—Ahhh… So that much time has already passed huh.

—Yup. As expected it was pretty tough on poor Ray. …It seemed like you were having fun so I didn’t say anything though.

Just like Sakura said, Lilia felt some enjoyment from it. Especially since Ray’s memory was good, he’d remember something after only being taught once. In that regard, teaching was quite enjoyable. Just, seeing Ray fallen limp from exhaustion, she couldn’t help but reflect a little at having somewhat overdone it.

“Sorry about that, Ray.”

At Lilia’s words, Ray vigorously raised his head.

“No no! Your lesson was very easy to understand! Thank you very much!”

And so he bowed his head with great vigour. Lilia only replied with a curt ‘I see’, but the corners of her mouth couldn’t help as they naturally turned upwards.

—Ahaha. Lilia, you seem happy.

—As if.

“Well then, it’s about time, I’ll be going now.”

“Yes. Thank you very much for today.”

Leaving Ray, who bowed his head once more, Lilia quietly exited the room.
In the Library, there was still barely any sign of other people. It seemed like classes had ended quite some time ago. To not leave Alisa worrying, she made to return straight back and headed for the exit.

“Miss Lilia!”

Stopped midway, Lilia halted her feet. Turning around, there stood Ray.

“What’s the matter?”

“Umm… If you have the time, it would be great if you could perhaps come again?”

Lilia slightly widened her eyes. She thought about what Ray’s intentions might be, but nothing came to mind. What could possibly be the reason that this boy was saying such a thing?

—Lilia, sometimes, can be quite dumb.

—Ha? You picking a fight?

—Not at all. It’s just, yeah. Never mind.

The presence of Sakura’s wry smile was transmitted. Not understanding what she meant, Lilia only tilted her head.

“Alright. If I feel like it, I’ll come again.”

Not knowing his intentions, she couldn’t make a promise. Not having a reason to refuse either she answered so, but,

“Yes! I will be waiting!”

Ray had a very delighted smile.

(The chapter) Ended up concluding in the library…

Schizophrenia – Chapter 17

Uwahh I had intended to follow my own uniform guidelines of translating all pronouns, sounds and honourifics, but then a wild Senpai comes in, and all my efforts are thrown out the window… I can only facepalm and curse why I hadn’t expected this from the start.

That aside, I just realised that I’m actually doing all this releasing during Lunar New Year. Heh, I guess if it’s Este’s thing is to bring new chapters as presents on Christmas, my chapters will arrive as your “New Year’s Money”, for those that know what that is. Happy Lunar New year, and here’s to a better one than the last. Enjoy!

—Lilia. Calmed down?

Hearing Sakura’s voice, Lilia lifted her face. Just how much time had passed since she came in here? At the very least, classes should have already began by this point. She really should have been rushing over, but Lilia only felt around her eyes and sighed.

—I’ve calmed down. Though, I can’t really go to class.

—They’re bright red huh, swollen too. Quite a pitiful face after having said all that to the Prince.

—Oh be quiet, I’m fully aware.

Getting to her feet, she lightly brushed the dirt from her clothes. Gently peeking out from the doors she examined the surroundings. She could faintly hear the sounds of conversation, but at least it seemed that there was no one immediately nearby. It would be easy to return to her room back at the dorm, but doing so now would probably cause Alisa to worry.

—We’re just wasting time, so how about we go study at the Library or something?

—You’re right… Let’s do that.

Quietly leaving the classroom, Lilia maintained vigilance towards her surroundings as she began to move. Though it wasn’t as if she would be dragged back to class if someone reported her truancy, she certainly didn’t want anyone to witness her cried out face here. It wasn’t something she wanted to find people discussing about later on.
Maybe due to most of the students being in class right now, she managed to arrive at the library on the second floor without running into anyone. Quietly opening the door, she slid herself inside. Immediately shutting it once in, she breathed a long sigh of relief.

The library in this academy was quite large. Naturally, due to the large number of bookshelves lined up, it’d be hard to be seen by someone if one went deep inside. Especially now in the middle of lessons, one probably wouldn’t be found by any students. Though there should definitely be a teacher here, around this time they would be running around organising the bookshelves. Since the often used books are generally gathered near the front, the back had mostly become a blind spot devoid of people.
Lilia went deep into the library. As she reached to the farthest reaches back, she took a breath. Looking at the shelves around her, placed here were a great number of books about this country’s history. If it’s here, there definitely shouldn’t be anyone coming around.

—Well then, there’s no pen or paper, but it’s study time! I wonder what I should teach.

When Sakura taught Lilia, her voice would always be full of vigour. While a joyous voice, she was also quite strict. Though there were hardships too, just hearing Sakura’s joyful tone, Lilia could feel the motivation to work even a little harder. Whenever Lilia got one of the difficult questions prepared by Sakura correct, she would become overjoyed as if it were her own success leading Lilia to the point where she was the one to start feeling embarrassed.
This time too she was happily thinking away, but Lilia interrupted that.

—Sakura, before that, I’d like to get your opinion on something though.

—Nn? What would that be?

—From now on… I wonder how should I be facing Tina.

Ahh, Sakura groaned and fell silent. She was probably thinking up something regarding that. Lilia also tried to give it another thought, but still didn’t know what kind of face she should have the next time she sees Tina.
It can be assumed that the Prince likes Tina, as well as that Tina also did not particularly dislike the Prince. Tina hasn’t exactly said that she liked the Prince, but it was probably alright to think that way. At least if she didn’t think like this, she’d be losing all face in such a situation.
Lilia had completely broken off everything with the Prince. Lilia was the one rejecting here, so any reconciliation was almost certainly impossible. Tina, who had become her friend, was thrust right in the middle between Lilia and the Prince. She ended up feeling quite bad about creating such a situation.

—Worried about Tina?

At Sakura’s question, Lilia snorted.

—This has nothing to do with that girl okay. I just don’t want to feel responsible for getting someone caught in the crossfire here.

—Yup. Let’s just leave it at that then.

—What do you mean by that

—Ahaha. Back to the real topic, it’s probably fine to not worry about that too much though. Tina will probably, to not have you two bump heads, act with a certain degree of caution in mind, that’s what I think. The Prince will most likely also avoid touching on the topic of you, so as long as you don’t stir things up, I don’t think there’s any reason to worry.

Would it be as simple as that? Lilia still didn’t really know what Tina’s temperament was like, so she couldn’t come to a solid conclusion.

—Rather, I think if you were to keep your distance, it’ll just cause Tina to mind things more. Wouldn’t it be fine to just act as usual?

—Though that would be kind of difficult.

—Yup. Do your best!

—Talking like it’s none of your business…

Though she was smiling wryly, she did not object. Lilia couldn’t come up with any other answers herself after all.

—Well, with that, now it’s studying!

Just as Sakura was exclaiming now

“Oh…? Whom might be present here?”

—that voice was heard at the same time.

“…!”

With a gulp, Lilia slowly turned around. There stood a boy she didn’t recognise. It was boy with short silver hair, and by the school uniform he was wearing, it could be seen that he was student here. Although she had no recollection of him, it was probably not so for the boy. There was hardly anyone in this academy that did not know about Lilia.
That was what she thought but.

“Umm, Senpai, is it? Is it fine to not be in class?”

It seemed that he didn’t recognise her, but whether he really didn’t know or was just acting so, Lilia couldn’t
determine.

—Sakura. Do you know about this kid?

—Sorry, no idea. Though he doesn’t seem like a bad guy…

—That so…

In that case, let’s see how this turns out for a bit. Lilia decided so and fixed a smile to her face.

“I had something to look up so I’m here for that. What about you?”

—Such convincing innocence! It’s innocent Lilia!

—Be quiet you.

Presenting a retort to Sakura who shouted in her head, she sought for a response from the boy. The boy quickly answered.

“Well… I am studying here. I don’t really fit in with the class… Fortunately, my grades on exams are not too bad, so they’re leaving me be.”

—Eh, is that really okay?

—It is indeed. As long as you can get results on the exams, they’ll allow it even if you’re absent from lessons. If not for that, I wouldn’t be leaving school for two whole weeks would I.

—Ahh, I see. Now that you mention it that is so.

However, thought Lilia. You can certainly study on your own, but that can’t be said to be very efficient. Even if you didn’t fit in with the class, she felt you ought to at least attend the lessons. When she voiced some of these doubts, the boy only smiled vaguely.

—Perhaps there are some circumstances, huh.

—What’ll you do?

—It’s not as if he was seeking me for help, so let’s just ignore it.

She just happened to run into the boy after all. She didn’t have any responsibility to go help him, and Lilia herself wasn’t someone who really had the leisure to do so anyways. Not in terms of time nor, more importantly, emotionally with what she was already dealing with.

“I won’t pry any deeper then. Well do your best.”

From here on a we’ll probably be continuing with a leisurely tone or what not.

Schizophrenia – Chapter 16

Hey though I’m a horrible person who disappears for months at a time just like a shitty deadbeat stepdad, at least I have enough decency to not hang people off cliffs too much. Here’s the continuation from chapter 15. Enjoy…

That conversation didn’t enter her head at all. Her thoughts came to a complete halt, stuck in an absolute daze.

—Lilia! Get a hold of yourself!

With Sakura’s shout, her mind slowly began to move again. At the same time, the Prince’s words replayed themselves in her head. What did, this guy, just say?
The moment she remembered, Lilia’s heart cooled rapidly.

—Sakura. I’m fine.

—But…

Fine. Fufu, rather my head has already cooled down. I wonder, how in the world I had come to love such a man.

Indeed, the engagement itself was something decided upon by their parents. But even so, Lilia loved the Prince. Though it was something like love at first sight, she did indeed love him. To that end, to not have him taken away by Tina, she had acted out her harassment.
Despite all that, she seemed to actually have been such an inconsequential existence to this man. Certainly, Tina also said that she couldn’t really recognise Lilia when she first saw her, but this man, even if it was as kids, should have seen Lilia without makeup on countless times before. And yet even so, he didn’t recognise her.
Ah~ah, Lilia sighed in her heart. That to this man, she was such a worthless existence, was made very clear to her. With just that, it was more than enough.
And so, Lilia smiled.

“Eek…”

A short shriek leaked out from the surroundings. It seemed that before they knew it inquisitive gazes were being directed towards them. And witnessing Lilia’s smile, a good number of people had brought their hands to cover their mouths. Even Tina and Alisa, when noticing the smile, had their cheeks cramp up slightly.
Lilia slowly rose from her seat and opened her mouth towards the Prince.

“It’s been a while, Your Highness.”

“Nn? That voice… No way, is it Lilianne!?”

At the Prince’s shocked voice, Lilia deepened her smile. As if thinking, So he really hadn’t noticed before huh.

“You, what are you doing here? Are you trying to do something to Tina again?”

“There is no such thing. Just having a little chat with Tina is all. Peacefully, you know?”

“As if I’d believe that.”

The Prince didn’t even try to hide the disgust in his voice. Really, how did she ever fall in love with man like this.

“My, it’s not as if I had the intention to have you believe me. I was simply stating the facts. Or perhaps, you want to make me out to be the bad guy even without me having done anything? You do don’t you. Yes, I am very well aware.”

Tina and Alisa paled hearing how she spoke. The Prince, on the contrary, had his face redden.

“You damn… There’s a limit to showing disrespect!”

“Oh my. This is indeed the school grounds. There is no such thing as lèse-majesté here. Or perhaps it’s that? You’ll forcibly drag me outside and charge me for lèse-majesté? Well, how frightening.”

The Prince’s face distorted with violent rage. Enjoying such a sight while laughing, before long she puffed out a scoff and smiled.

“Rest assured, Your Highness. I am doing no such things as to harass Miss Tina.”

“There’s no way I can believe such a…”

“After all…”

I no longer have any interest in you.

Perhaps not understanding the words given to him, the Prince hardened with his mouth agape like an idiot. Lilia laughed with a small giggle. Everyone in the surrounding area that had heard was made to take one step back.

“Well then, Miss Tina, I will be heading to the classroom.”

Tina, who had been left out of the conversation until now, trembled in surprise but immediately shook her head as a smile floated to her face.

“Yes. Thank you very much, Mistress Lilia.”

“Alisa. Please make sure to tidy up my room. You’re free to do whatever after that.”

“Certainly.”

Getting up, Alisa bowed respectfully. After nodding in satisfaction, thinking well then, Lilia turned to face the Prince.

“Good day, Your Highness. Please do not speak to me again.”

Saying so with a full-faced smile and leaving behind the completely frozen prince, Lilia departed the area.

Exiting the dorm, she entered the school building right beside it. Then, finding an empty classroom, Lilia went in and locked the door. Just like that, on the spot, she sat down as if collapsing.

“……Nn”

Tears overflowed from her eyes. Even trying to bear it, the tears continued to endlessly overflow, drenching Lilia’s face and clothes. Also, without being able to completely hold in her voice, the sound her sobbing continued to leak out.

—Lilia…

The voice resounding in her head, perhaps in concern for Lilia, had a soft and gentle tone. But she was unable to give a response.

Her first love being the Prince, beyond just the engagement, she had thought that the Prince had at least held some fondness towards her. But that was just Lilia’s desire, just an illusion. The Prince hadn’t held even the slightest interest in her after all.

—Lilia. You’re a good girl, so don’t cry. Okay?

Even being told that, she couldn’t stop despite her own will. If it could be stopped, she wouldn’t be crying in the first place.
Just like that, she continued to cry for a while and then also noticed.

—…Hic.

Sakura’s sobbing.

—Hey why are… you crying…

—After all… Thinking about Lilia’s feelings even I’d end up getting sad…

That’s just her doing her own thing, thought Lilia. In the end, what Sakura had was all just her own imaginings. It didn’t seem like Sakura was really understanding her feelings.

Besides, Sakura continued.

—Even though I want to give you a hug… I can’t do anything at all.

“…Nn”

Lilia involuntarily opened her eyes wide. She hadn’t thought that Sakura would be thinking about such a thing. When she wondered about the reason, she immediately felt disdain towards herself. Sakura was always thinking about Lilia. That was why, this time as well, she was probably feeling hurt as if it were about herself.

—Sorry, Lilia… Sorry, that I can’t do anything for you…

—Don’t worry about it alright… No need to, worry about it…

Sakura and Lilia’s sobbing overlapped. Sakura being inside Lilia, Lilia being in an empty classroom, the two continued to cry softly.

Schizophrenia – Chapter 15

It’s really been a while huh. I guess no more making promises as to release frequencies… Oh well, that’s life I suppose. If anyone actually feels strongly enough about the speed of translation for this series feel free to send me an invite for collab I guess. Or just do it on your own, not like I can really stop you. Anyways, to the people who still haven’t forgotten about this story, here’s chapter 15. Enjoy!

P.S. Just wanna give a shout out to the wonderful Kudarajin, since discovering fluffy (and insanely fast) translations of Hokuou brought me back to reading (and finding time to translate) novels again.

“Morning, Tina.”

“Eh, ah… Ahh! Good morning!”

Tina got up energetically and lowered her head. Lilia gave a small sigh and brought her gaze to Tina with a glare. Just that was enough to shatter Tina’s expression.

“Umm, I mean… Morning, Lilia.”

“Good.”

With Lilia’s nod of approval, Tina let out a sigh of relief.

“Well then, what are you doing in a place like this?”

“Ah, I was waiting for you, Lilia.”

The bad premonition was spot on. With her cheeks stiffening, Lilia somehow managed to maintain her smile.

“Ohh. How come?”

“I just wanted to talk a little… And well, I wondered if becoming friends was really just a dream or not… Hey, Lilia. We’re really friends now, right?”

Tina asked with upturned eyes. This made Lilia’s eyes waver for just a moment before she returned her gaze to Tina. To be honest, she had intended to avoid her, along with the matter of the prince. She had spoken for the sake of not having to meet if it could be helped.

“What are you talking about? Mistress Lilia would never go back on her word.”

Lilia froze at Alisa’s words.

“Th-that’s right isn’t it! It is as Miss Alisa says. I don’t know what got into me!”

“Of course. This is Mistress Lilia we’re talking about here. There is no mistake about that.”

What’s with all this confidence here, thought Lilia.

—Deep… That really hit deeply…

Ah, ahaha… Don’t mind it, Lilia…

It seemed like all her options for avoiding Tina had disappeared. Heaving a heavy sigh, Lilia sat down across from Tina. Noticing this, Alisa also took a seat beside, and Tina happily started pouring the black tea into their cups.

“Well then, what shall we talk about?”

“Eh? Ah… I hadn’t thought about that…”

At that, Tina fell into silence, and Lilia and Alisa were also rendered speechless. To invite someone without having prepared any topic to talk about, what was this girl thinking? As Lilia was narrowing her eyes at the situation, Sakura’s voice forced itself between her thoughts.

—Lilia. There’s no preparation for just talking with a friend you know.

—Is that so?

—Yeah. Not for me anyways.

—Ahh, that’s why you’re like that huh.

—Hey wait a minute, whatever could you mean by that!

Ignoring the noisy complaints from Sakura, Lilia looked at Tina. Their eyes meeting, Tina clapped her hands with an “Oh right”.

“Makeup.”

“What?”

“Today, you don’t have any makeup on huh. I almost didn’t recognise you.”

Lilia’s movements froze, and Alisa’s cheeks cramped up as Sakura laughed in amusement.

—She went headfirst into treading on a landmine huh! Lilia, Tina doesn’t know anything, so no getting mad okay?

—Please rest assured. Since my anger is all directed at you.

—Nothing about that brings me rest or assurance though!?

After a short exchange with Sakura, she managed to calm her brewing agitation. Once again fixing the smile that was about to fall off her face, she replied.

“I was told that it didn’t really suit me. That it was fine to just go like this. Does it look strange after all?”

“That’s not true at all! Your current look is much better. As I thought, it seems that Lilia is quite a beauty after all.”

“Eh? Then that means up until now… Eh?”

Lilia’s eyes widened, and as if realising she had said something inappropriate, Tina hurriedly averted her eyes, casting her gaze at Alisa. Alisa herself was busily drinking her tea as if to stay completely uninvolved with this. A voice going “what’s with this” was echoing through Lilia’s head.
Lilia properly thought over Tina’s words, and coming to an understanding, she smiled feebly.

—Sakura. It seems my sense of aesthetics are quite off, so from now on I’ll be counting on you.

—Escaping from reality’s no good you know? Let’s work through this together.

Sakura’s words pierced deep into her chest. Though a part of her was glad that Sakura had let her know, at the same time, thinking back, if this one hadn’t said anything, she wouldn’t have had to taste such grief. However, looking in the long term, it was still good to have realised after all, so she decided to not say anything.

“Tina. Alisa. If you have some time, could you perhaps think of some more suitable makeup for me?”

When Lilia said so, Alisa made a wry smile, and Tina stiffened in surprise for a moment. Then, she immediately smiled and nodded.

“Okay! Leave it to me!”

After that, as if the tension was released, their conversation continued with idle chatter. The talk about Tina’s family was mostly highlighted with talk about the pet they were keeping at home. However, during their conversation, it was clear that one certain topic was being avoided.

“Tina. So this is where you were.”

Suddenly, the voice of the Mr. Avoided Conversation Topic himself came from behind Lilia. Lilia’s expression froze with her movements while Alisa took a glance at the owner of the voice, then looked worriedly at Lilia, and Tina’s expression, perhaps from restlessness, had distorted ever so slightly.

“Your Highness… You seem to be quite early today.”

Tina said, putting on a veil of calmness. However, she did not even bother trying to conceal the trembling in her voice. Perhaps not noticing, or maybe even just pretending to not notice, the source of the first voice, the prince of this country, simply continued the conversation.

“Yeah. I heard that Lilianne had returned. So I was worried about you and left a little earlier. Aren’t you quite early yourself today. You’re usually a bit later than this.”

“Yes. That’s… I thought, I’d have a little chat…”

“Hmm.”

The Prince took a few steps and moved beside Tina. Then he saw Lilia’s face. Since it wouldn’t do turn away from The Prince, Lilia also put on a forced smile and faced him.
She was seen. Since they were going to the same school, it was only a matter of time, but she didn’t think they’d meet this quickly. Her heart was racing, and nervousness gripped her chest painfully.
And so, the Prince opened his mouth.

“A fresh face huh. New friend of Tina’s?”

Tina and Alisa had their breath catch in their throat. This Prince’s words were completely beyond their expectations. Lilia completely blanked out, with a completely dumbfounded expression on her face.

“Yo-Your Highness. Do you really not know?”

“Nn? Have we also met before? Now that you mention it, I do somewhat recall…”

It seems The Prince finally makes his appearance.

THE REINCARNATED VAMPIRE WANTS AN AFTERNOON NAP – 07

Also, to all of you who had finals after winter break, good job. I hope you’re not as dead as me~

SHOUDOU

“…Uh-uhh.”

Some time had passed since parting with Zeno-kun.

I was in the middle of eating a proper meal. Sashimi made from a fish known as zerabia was rich in umami and had great consistency. In a word, it was a perfect dish. However, even though I had eaten such a masterpiece, my hunger was not fading.

I even drank the water I was offered. It didn’t even quench my thirst a little.

… I guess my body desires blood.

It’s been about a week since I was reborn as a vampire. The reason for this craving is most likely because I hadn’t drank a single drop of human blood that entire time.

I can overcome the natural enemies of vampires such as sunlight and water with defensive skills however, there’s nothing that can be done about this thirst.

“What can be done…”

The solution is easy. I’ll be fine after drinking blood.

I know the answer. I know the answer, yet…

I’m a deviant.

Casually approaching a stranger and saying, “Excuse me, but would you be so kind as to let me drink your blood.” is completely out.

They would definitely run away. If I was the one approached, I would report them to the police.

“It may have been a mistake to become a vampire…”

While I was traveling with Zeno-kun, the desire to suck blood often showed its face. At that time, whenever I drank water or ate food, I was able to sate my appetite. Now there was now no sign of it subsiding at all.

… Does this mean that the food’s distractive effect was lost.

The blood sucking impulse was only suppressed momentarily with meals and water. That only stalled the inevitable, as my current state reflects.

“Ugh…”

… Even if I calmly analyzed my situation, it wouldn’t improve.

There wasn’t only a feeling of starvation, but I also had a headache and my vision blurred a bit. I felt chilly.

It felt similar to a cold accompanied by a high fever, but there was a single clear difference between the feelings.

“My fangs… ache…”

My charm point after being reborn as a vampire were these sharper than normal canines.

My whole body was complaining because of the cold, but only my fangs felt terribly hot and unpleasant. They gave off the discomfort of a prickling scrape.

…I have to keep it together.

Escaping into an alleyway was a smart move, if I do say so myself.

If I had stayed in such a crowded place, I certainly would have bit into the nearest person. That was how suddenly the thirst for blood came.

I thought that I would’ve been able to withstand it for a little longer, but my limit was close.

I don’t intend to become a monster that attacks people though.

… It’s not ok to cause trouble for others.

I certainly am lazy, and my dream is to be taken care of by someone and live a good-for-nothing life, but I’d like to make sure that the person accepts me first.

I don’t want to put strain on or cause trouble for a person that doesn’t desire it.

“If only I could drink my own blood and be satisfied…”

I remembered all of the details of the ability. I understand that it’s not something that can be solved by such a way.

When I bite, I don’t need to suck. Thanks to raising the ability’s level, there’s no need to do such a thing or drink a large amount. Just a little would do, but it can’t be my own.

I would never be satisfied without drinking the blood of another being. This is the vampire’s curse.

I who had overcome most of the weaknesses of the vampire race such as water and the sun, was still troubled by this final weakness.

It’s also incurable with recovery magic because it isn’t a sickness, injury or blight. It is the same as breathing for vampires. To stop breathing altogether is not called recovery.

“Oh, it’s useless… It’s already becoming dark…”

Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like I’ll fall to my desires. My consciousness is slowly fading.

At this rate, I can avoid going on a rampage. As long as I pass out, I won’t cause trouble for others.

“Ah… so sleepy.”

That reminded me, I hadn’t taken a nap yet…

Despite being in a back alley, the sea breeze still blew over me and was very pleasant. The passing fragrance smelt quite nice.

In order to escape my hunger, I curled up and slept.

…I’ll just sleep it off and forget.

I am good at sleeping. You might even call it a specialty. I slowly gave up my consciousness to sleep. Speaking of which, Loli Gramps-san said something about dying if the desire for blood grew too large…

I feel a bit bad of going through the trouble of reincarnating only to die a week after being born into this world… I only started thinking this as my consciousness melted away, so these apologetic feelings to Loli Gramps-san stopped being my problem.

I’m the Final Boss!? – Chapter 2

Hope?

Unedited

I don’t want to die.

That’s not something I was thinking about.
I decided to ignore the current situation for a second because there are a few strange points I needed to consider.
Why was I suddenly reborn in a new world as a baby?
Oh, and on top of that, why was I alone in the middle of a likely dangerous forest where Goblins could appear!?

Mn, well, those are all valid questions, me, but shouldn’t the main point of consideration be that void I was in?
A great mystery will likely be solved when I find the answer.
Then again, I suppose it could be a boring thing as well.
Hrm.

Ah, well, it’s not like thinking about it will help me escape from this situation though?
Going back to my current predicament, I know I said I’d overcome any obstacles you set out for me, System, but isn’t this a bit much?
I’m just a baby you know?
It’s not like I can do much.

While thinking of these pointless things, Goblin A has made progress towards me.
It seems it doesn’t know what I’m doing here either since it’s moving pretty slowly.
At this rate, I may die of boredom before it kills me.

Ah, but wait, perhaps the goblin is actually friendly and is merely concerned about my well-being and is being cautious in case this whole situation is a trap.
Yes, if I was in Goblin A’s position, I’d be wary of a random lone baby in the middle of a forest as well.
I guess this situation wasn’t as bad as I thought.
Still though, you got me good, System.
I was pretty scared there for a second, even if my mind seems calm.

No wait, now’s not the time to be delusional, me.
Sure, there are some cases where goblins end up being friendly, but those cases are rare, at least from what I remember.
Besides, the most important thing is that it’s drooling.
Hate to break it to you, Goblin A, but I’m not very delicious.
…Probably.

Hrm.
This goblin is disappointing though.
In the time it’s taken me to have multiple changes of heart about the intentions of this goblin, it has only gotten a bit closer.
It’s as if it wants me to figure out the purpose of existence.
Haa, I’m going to have to give you a rating of two out of ten, Goblin A.
Pretty underwhelming, but I suppose once you actually reach me, it could get dangerous.

The goblin continues to approach me, and I continue to look disinterestedly at it.
However, after a few moments of this, something shifts inside of me, and the goblin’s speed picks up quite a bit.
I wonder what that shift was.
Could it be my special ability?
System did say I had received some kind of fate.
Is that what caused the shift?

Now that it’s like this though, and the goblin is very quickly closing the distance between us, I’m actually feeling a bit scared.
I was just reborn after all, I don’t want to die so soon.
Would I just go back to that void place?
It was lonely there, and it was boring.
I don’t want to go back!
Somebody save me!
I don’t want to die!

I struggle as much as I can, and attempt to thrash about, but I’m just a baby.
I’m too weak to do anything.
How could I have been so calm before!?

As I watch the goblin get within arm’s reach of me, I lose all hope.
It was useless.
Although I thought that old man and System were my friends, I was wrong.
They set me up to die here.
Die alone, cold, and without being able to fight back.
Now, I suppose I can only watch as this goblin brings the stick he was carrying down onto my defenseless body.
Maybe if I somehow reincarnate again, I hope that one is a peaceful life.

In my final moments, I recognize that I’m strangely calm, but it doesn’t matter.
This short life will be over in a few short seconds anyway.
I close my eyes to at least spare myself from that.
Nobody should have to watch themselves die.
Right, it should be about now.
Goodbye, everyone.

I hear a noise.

Again, there’s a noise.
Is it my body being beaten by that stick?

Hrm.
This is strange.
I should be dead by now, but I don’t feel any different.
There’s still light resting on my eyelids, and I’m still slightly cold.
Tentatively, I carefully open one of my eyes before opening both of them wide in surprise.
A wolf!

Well, I think it’s a wolf anyway.
It could just be a large dog.
Either way, it’s currently circling around Goblin A.
Could it be!?
System answered my prayers!?
Mn, it could just be the wolf wanted to eat me instead, so is fighting the goblin over me.
At the very least, I haven’t died yet, and no matter the situation, that’s a good thing.
Now then, let’s watch my savior beat up this cruel villain!

Ignoring the me who’s cheering it on, the wolf continues to circle the goblin, waiting for its chance to strike.
Without the same patience as the wolf, the goblin lunges towards its enemy.
However, to say the wolf was expecting the attack would be an understatement.
Casually dodging the goblin’s sloppy lunge, the wolf quickly spins so that it faces the goblin’s defenseless back, and swipes it with its claws.
I was actually expecting the wolf to attack with its teeth, but judging from the amount of blood oozing out of the goblin’s fresh wound, this works too.
Actually, that’s really a lot of blood the goblin is losing…
I have a feeling I’m not supposed to be this calm about it though.

《[Mental Fortitude] has been acquired》

Hrm, that was convenient.
What exactly does [Mental Fortitude] do though?
I can guess since I don’t feel any nausea looking at the blood, but I should make sure.

《Mental Fortitude: Increases resistance to mental damage due to blood or gore. This is one of the most basic passive skills that every adventurer possesses.》

That works.
I wonder, so I just have to think about skills to get a definition of them?
Ah, but wait, if I’m able to see messages like this, then wouldn’t I also be able to see my own status?
Nn, I’ll think about it later, right now I need to make sure this wolf defeats Goblin A.

Of course, with that wound on its back, the victor of this battle is pretty much decided.
To think that wolf’s claws were that sharp.
Dangerous!

Anyway, heavily wounded, the goblin is struggling to even lift its stick to attack the wolf.
Goblin A swings, but the wolf has long since left the strike area.
Still cautious however, Wolfie hangs back and continues to circle the goblin.
Then, when the wolf sees that its enemy is no longer able to keep up with its movements, it leaps in and bites down on the goblin’s neck.
A crunching sound can be heard, signaling the end of Goblin A’s life.
I wish I could say it was nice knowing you, Goblin A, but it wasn’t.

Now, time to see what this wolf’s intentions are.
I’ll have you know that I don’t intend to die so easily!

The Eighth Story – Wicked Girl, Agnes Le Verges

The day after the storm, once it became morning, the weather outside was nice. Bernard thought it was like yesterday’s stormy weather was just a lie.
The attic, which had taken the most damage yesterday, was unusable due to the dampness. There was also the possibility that the floorboards were peeling off and needed to be replaced. He didn’t even want to think about the costs of repairs and such.

When Eric disinterestedly relayed the report, he ignored it while despairing.
Agnes was to temporarily use the guest room.
Bernard thought that this was just perfect. During the time he was deciding on how to deal with her, he decided to treat her courteously.

“And so, Agnes Le Verges.”
“Ahh.”
“It seems that you have a cold.”
“Huh?”
“Because last night, your whole body was drenched in rain.”
“…”

Catching a cold from having her whole body drenched in rain was something Bernard couldn’t believe.
At present, he told Celia and Carol to nurse her.

“How may I serve you?”
“What do you mean how, if you just call a doctor-”

After saying that, he could only sigh.
It wasn’t good to have Agnes be seen by anyone who didn’t live in the mansion.
But even so, he couldn’t leave a sick person as they were.

“The doctor, it’s fine to call him, right?”
“Ah, aaaah. But–”

He ordered that the doctor’s mouth be forcibly shut by bribing him with money.
With a bow, Eric left the room.

From the repair fees to the medical expenses and the hush money, Bernard’s small fortune was steadily being whittled down.

Thinking that problems would occur time and time again, he let out a deep sigh.

◇◇◇

After changing into his knight uniform, he passed time in the rest area until his working hours began.

“The Third Special Assault Force” that Bernard was attached to was composed of young knights in their early to mid twenties.
Today, there was a strange commotion in the morning.
The thing they were surrounding was a cheap-looking weekly publication. As the contents of the paper were the gossip of the nobles, it was extremely indecent.
This week’s edition sold so well that it nearly went out of stock. While boasting that he went through trouble to obtain this, one of the members held it out in front of Bernard.

“What’s written in here.”
“It’s concerning the rumored noblewoman.”
“!”

Without sticking his head out into the commotion, Bernard’s glance fell onto the periodical.
Though the front cover was a nude painting, things like that didn’t really matter.
The heading, “All About the Gaudy Way the Former Earl’s Daughter Lives and her unspeakable fraternization with the opposite Sex ~revealed by an acquaintance, this Is the Real Her~,” was written.
Just seeing that filled him with revulsion.
To Bernard, who showed no interest, the one colleague started to talk about the contents of the news story.

Agnes Le Verges.
A nineteen year-old born to a distinguished family, she was one of the very popular beauties in high society.
She invested much money and effort in preserving her beauty.

Her dresses were silken, made of satin and taffeta, as she would not wear anything that wasn’t made of first-class materials. It was said that, one day, she had fired a maid who had accidentally brought a dress made out of twill.
The people of high society had named that Agnes Le Verges as, “The Resplendent Rose.”

Reporters implied that it was natural she was beautiful considering all the money she spent, and they frankly reported that she lived indulgently and luxuriously.

Bernard had heard stories concerning her socialization with men from Djibril, but he was now hearing more detailed accounts from the self-proclaimed experts of his time.

“It’s amazing, isn’t it~. That she alternated between different men every year.”
“It must have been unbearable being those guys, huh. They gave her so many things too.”
“I had thought that Miss Agnes was pitiful, but now that I’ve heard the stories, it’s like she’s reaping what she’s sowed…”
“During a soiree, I just happened to catch a glimpse of her, but she was a reaal beauty.”
“But you know, it costs money to do so. And making her my wife if her personality is awful as well? No thank you.”

Without joining in the conversation, Bernard silently gazed down at the periodical.
If it was before, he might have joined them in their slander.
But now, he could only wrack his brain at the gossip happening in front of him.

Agnes Le Verges—Very prideful, the worst kind of woman who would evaluate someone with just their outward appearance.

However, the Agnes Bernard knew differed greatly.
Quiet, well-mannered and one who used the miniscule amount of money she possessed to send provisions to her father who was in prison, she was a family-minded woman who could be found anywhere.

The wicked woman, Agnes, and the extremely ordinary girl, Agnes.

Bernard was unable to determine which Agnes was the real one.
As of now, he had only been around her for a short period of time. He thought it was too soon to come to a conclusion.

Once the hour for work began, the commanding officer, Lazarre, came around to start the morning assembly.
As there was a delay in the concealment of the vulgar publication, it was confiscated.

After finishing the day’s training, he headed to the office to report his results to his superior.
Once the bell signifying the end of working hours rang, Lazare told Bernard, “Thanks for your work,” before telling him to go home.

“—Ahhhh, that’s right, Orlellian. Dispose of this for me, won’t you.”

The thing he held out was the weekly publication that had gossip about Agnes written in it. With an unpleasant expression, he received it.

“Good grief, it’s a terrible thing.”
“…”

Bernard rolled up the not too thick periodical into a cylinder so the front cover faced inward and grasped it tightly in his hand.
While he was thinking that he should burn it somewhere before he returned, he heard Lazarre say something.

“If it were possible, I’d like to shelter her at home, but I can’t get a hold of any news of her.”
“… Are you alright?”
“Is what alright?”
“Something like saving the daughter of a house that has provoked the king’s displeasure.”
“It wouldn’t be good, but with articles like this coming out, the circumstances surrounding her are only getting worse.”

Even under normal circumstances, she would be treated coldly due to the scandal her father had caused, but now, even bad rumors about her had come forth. One could say her situation was steadily spiraling downward.

“It could be that perhaps she is in an orphanage in the streets to hide herself.”
“Why is that so?”
“My niece hung out with Agnes at one point, and it seems like she used to go to the orphanage once a week.”

Lazarre told him that she was a woman who actively performed charitable acts. Also that the things that were written in the magazine were probably bullshit.

“There was one time she came over to the house and greeted us, and she seemed like a polite young lady. This kind of thing must have been written to increase the magazine’s revenue. They’re doing two-bit things.”

He spat out that it was a detestable world where this kind of periodical sold well.

After that, there was a moment of silence.
The one who opened his mouth first was Lazarre.

“Orlellian.”
“What is it?”
“I’m going to have to go to the assembly from now on. And as such, I have a request.”

Lazarre implored while lowering his head that he wanted Orlellian to occasionally visit the orphanage from now on, and that if Agnes was there, he wanted him to shelter her.

“If she is there, I want you to take her along to my house by coach. I’ll remunerate you.”
“No, it’s fine.”
“Don’t say that, I beg you.”
“… I’ll go to the orphanage. It’s on the way home, so I don’t need remuneration.”
“I-Is that so. That’s a big help.”

The Imperial City’s orphanage was near the boarding station for coaches. He refused the money, saying that it was only stopping by on the way home, so he didn’t need any.
After receiving a memo with the address of his superior’s residence written on it, he headed to the locker room to go get changed.

◇◇◇

It took ten minutes to walk there from the knight order’s garrison. The boarding place for coaches in the central street was only a little while away from where the orphanage was.
Because he couldn’t go empty-handed, he bought some sweets from a nearby store and headed toward the orphanage.

The orphanage, which had ties to the church, was managed by donations from the nobles.
However, the livelihoods of the children who lived there were not of great quality.
For who knows how long, the person who managed the money that had been collected had not been disclosed.

Bernard peeked into the orphanage from outside the fence.
Children between the ages of five and ten were cheerfully running about.
One could tell they did not live in abundance by just looking at their clothes. There were children who were barefoot as well.
Bernard, who had always lived in an abundant environment, was looking at a spectacle that made him want to avert his eyes. —Having said that, he couldn’t go home in this state.
After circling about the entrance, he entered.

“Wow, it’s a visitor!”
“Hello!”

At once, he was discovered by the children and ended up surrounded. Because there was a good smell coming from it, they peered into the paper bag that he was holding in his hands.

“W-Wait a minute.”

As he was being jostled about by the children, a sister came out from inside the building.

“You all, what are you doing to the visitor!”

The children who were scolded apologized with a single word and dispersed.

“I am truly sorry.”
“No, it’s fine…”

For starters, he handed over the baked sweets he was holding. All of the sisters were delighted and received them with smiles.
After showing them the knights’ bracelet to reveal his social status, when he said that he wanted to hear stories concerning Agnes Le Verges, he was led into the building.

“I wished to tell you this from the beginning, but Miss Agnes is not here.”

Bernard retorted in his mind, ‘of course that’d be so.’

“… To this day, many reporters have come, mainly in order to hear things about Miss Agnes.”

The sister told him that she had told them all the same thing no matter which reporter it was.

“Miss Agnes came here on foot once every week. She was extremely kind and was a woman full of affection. The children also really looked forward to meeting with Miss Agnes. … Though it seems that no matter who it was, they didn’t write what I told them in their articles.”

She said that, upon seeing the weekly publication’s article, she felt utterly mortified.
Bernard silently listened to her story.

“—And so, why might you be here?”
“No, well, because my superior told me that if Agnes Le Verges were here, he wanted to shelter her.”
“Well, if that’s the case, there’s no reason to worry!”

What was there no reason to worry about? Agnes was at Bernard’s house, of course, so becoming curious about why the sister would assert such a thing, he asked her.

“Miss Agnes is currently at a certain knight’s house.”
“Huh!?”

Bernard felt perspiration form on his forehead as he asked where that information had come from. His heartbeat violently increased.

“W-Where’s, who—”
“I don’t know the particulars myself, either.”
“Eh?”
“Because it’s something I heard from my mother.”
“F-From your mother?”
“Yes. My mother manages an inn, but…”

“Cottage of the Mountain Goat.” The sister stated that her mother was the hostess there.

“My family is large, so economically, things were a bit rough for us. … Since there were no people who would want to make the ugly daughter of a poor inn their wife, once I became twenty years-old, I became a nun. Speaking of which, this doesn’t matter, does it.”

In the same way as her, Agnes, who had nowhere to go, had, before anything else, come to the church to become a nun.

The one who had stopped her was the sister.

“If one becomes a sister, because one comes to serve God, one may not get married. … I thought that to a person as kind as Miss Agnes, who was loved by the children, not getting married for her entire life would be too much for her.”

However, Agnes’s determination had firmly become more certain. That from now on, she would use her life to serve God.

“But upon hearing that, well, there was a person she loved dearly, her cheeks became flushed, and she hung her head down in shame.”

Agnes had a person she loved.
Though it was difficult to realize her love immediately, the sister had recommended that, at least for the moment, she think about her future plans.
The sister had naturally inquired if Agnes would like to work at her parents’ “Cottage of the Mountain Goat.”
As she had said that this might not be of much help, she had suggested, “How about cutting the room charge in half in exchange for work.”

“And so, just a few days ago, Miss Agnes met with the knight she loved dearly and supposedly came out of the inn holding hands.”
“She doesn’t love him dearly, and she wasn’t holding hands either!”
“Huh?”
“N-No, it was nothing.”

Because the sister was excited, the sister didn’t catch Bernard’s hint.
Thinking that it was really dangerous, he was greatly relieved.

“I’m sorry, my, I ended up talking too much…”
“It’s fine.”
“This story, please keep it confidential.”
“Ahh, I have no intention of letting it out of my mouth.”
“Thank you.”
“You too, don’t say it to anyone else either.”
“Ehh, of course. Swearing by God, I’ll keep this in silence.”

Outside, it had become completely dark. The time for the last coach was drawing near.
After finishing his words, he threw the weekly publication that had written about Agnes into the fireplace.

Bernard bid farewell to the sister and walked to the boarding station for coaches.

The wind that was blowing today was chilly as well.
When he looked up at the sky, black clouds were being carried by the wind.

Bernard thought that he might possibly have a big misunderstanding concerning Agnes Le Verges.

Nevertheless, there was just one thing he didn’t understand.
Five years ago, why did Agnes look at Bernard with such scornful eyes.

After seeing the current Agnes, even if he had heard it from someone who knew her, it would be impossible that she would do something like looking down on a stranger.

No matter how much he thought, he couldn’t come up with an answer.

Besides, Bernard was unable to understand the meaning of Agnes’ expression of gratitude toward him a few days ago.

Quickly, he realized that asking her directly would be best.

Have a Merry Christmas!

Class Rep passed me in the hallway so I grabbed his arm and dragged him off.

“Eh-, what’s wrong, Kisshouin-san?”

“Class Rep, I cannot imagine that it is true but in addition to your poetry, by any chance have you also dipped your toes into composing love songs?”

“EH!? How did you know!?”

I freaking knew it!
His disease is getting worse by the day. What a tragic discovery.

“I will not speak ill of your hobbies, Class Rep, however I sincerely hope that you are not thinking of singing to the girl in question. Gasp! It cannot be that you intend to do so at the school festival again!?”

“Nono, even I know that would be bad.”

Oh! Has he grown?

“Incidentally, what genre of song is it?”

“…It’s a secret,” he said with a blush.

Damned maiden.

“…I guess girls just find it a bother when somebody suddenly sings a song written for them?”

“I suppose. Not every girl is the same. I suppose the average girl would be shocked before happy.”

“I see…”

Class Rep dropped his head. So he really wants to sing, huh.
Perhaps I should confirm his intentions one more time when the school festival comes. I can’t discount the possibility that he’ll go into a frenzy and sing anyway.

“Instead of singing a strange song that you wrote, you might be better received singing an existing song for her instead.”

“I see.”

“Indeed. A while back, a certain person played a love song on piano. It was wonderful, and the girls were all over it. It shames me to say that even I felt a little something. It was surprising, coming from him. That is the key, Class Rep. Gap moe. Gap moe is everything.”

“Gap moe… I’m surprised you even know the word, Kisshouin-san. But hm, a gap in my image… Would it be surprising if I started playing instruments?”

“The diligent class representative playing a passionate song of love. I suppose it would be quite a gap indeed. Take care to choose the right song, though.”

“Like what? Something that brings to mind the ocean after all? Or would a song on piano be better?”

“The piano might be nice.”

“The problem is when I can play it…”

Suddenly…

“Class Rep, what’s wrong? Are you okay!?”

While the two of us were chatting in secret, Fellow Stalking Horse suddenly rushed out at us.

“Ah, Mizuzaki-kun. Did you need me?”

“No, I was going to ask if anything was wrong. She brought you over here, after all.”

Over here? Uh, we’re just in a normal hallway, but?

“Huh? I was just talking with her.”

“However…”

Stalking Horse seemed really worried for him. He even casually shielded him from me.
Hey, Stalking Horse, am I like some unthinkable fiend in your mind?

“…Umm, I don’t really get it, but I think you might be misunderstanding Kisshouin-san. It’s impossible that she’d do anything bad to me. I mean, she’s my love guru.”

“Love guru?”

“Yeah. Since primary school. She always gives me advice.”

Class Rep started shyly fiddling with his hair. Damned maiden.

“A love guru. For a love guru I’ve heard very little word about you having your own boyfriend.”

Oi, the hell are you saying, Stalking Horse. You picking a fight here? I don’t wanna hear this sass from the damned Vice Chief.
…I mean, I know Stalking Horse is pretty popular with the girls and all, but like, don’t they call me Goddess too?

“More importantly I had no idea there was a girl you liked.”

“EHH! Gosh, Mizusaki-kun, keep it a secret okay?”

The maiden blushed harder.
If Stalking Horse didn’t know then I can only assume that people had slowly forgotten about the poem. Good for you, Maiden. I’ll never forget it though.

“Should I help out then?”

“Eh-, really?”

Class Rep seemed ready to take up Fellow Stalking Horse’s offer so I quickly grabbed his arm.

“You mustn’t, Class Rep!”

“Eh, why?”

Leaving Stalking Horse, I started to whisper in his ear.

“I hear that when a friend offers to help out, it is often the case that the girl will fall in love with said friend instead. Worse yet, Mizusaki-kun is a popular boy. You mustn’t. That way lies danger.”

“That makes sense.”

“One day she might even ask you to help her together with him.”

“Uwah. That’d be the worst. But I can see it happening~”

“Right?”

Discussion concluded.

“I’m grateful that you offered, Mizusaki-kun, but I think I’ll just keep getting help from Kisshouin-san,” he said, with his hand up.

Stalking Horse looked at me with suspicion again.

“You really are just talking about love, right? Class Rep, she’s not threatening you or anything?”

“EH! Of course not!”

Did I do something to Stalking Horse? He seems convinced that I’m a villain.

“Kisshouin-san really does give me good advice. She even told me about this great shrine for matchmaking.”

“…That’s really not much, is it.”

“No, it was plenty. It worked.”

Eh-, worked!?

“Wait, Class Rep, what might you be talking about?”

I was grabbing his arm again.

“You know the school trip? We walked about the park together. It wasn’t just us, of course, but wow, I had fun.”

Oh, the time when I was about to turn into a merlion. Something like that did happen, huh. That’s nice~ Making great memories on your trip. I didn’t have anything like that at all.

“Anyway, the point is that I don’t have any problems with Kisshouin-san so you don’t have anything to worry about, Mizusaki-kun.”

“…I see.”

Why do I have to be doubted like this. I might have to talk to him about this.

“Mizusaki-kun, might I have a word?”

“What?”

I asked Class Rep to give us some room but he looked at me in worry and asked,

“Is everything okay?”

This time it was Stalking Horse’s time to be bewildered.

Hah! See! Class Rep thinks that you’re the dangerous one, not me!
Anyway, the two of us left Class Rep behind but he was still looking worried.

“Say, Mizusaki-kun. Why is it that you seem to have such a bad impression of me? I cannot say I recall doing anything.”

“To me, at least.”

What?

“In our last year in middle school you threatened Tsuruhana, didn’t you. You said that if she disobeyed, you would crush her. And that you had the power to do so. I happened to see it by chance.”

THE TIME WITH THE FOLDING FAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!?!

I knew that somebody might have seen that. And to think it was Fellow Stalking Horse.
I suppose that explains my image then…

“I know she was reaping what she sowed. But I can’t stand people who threaten others with their authority. Not even if it’s how the mighty Pivoine like to do things. I’ll protect the students from you if I have to.”

WHOAAAAA, he’s like totally casting me as the villain here.
But I guess it can’t be helped after seeing that… I can’t even defend myself here.

“…Well, there were certain circumstances involved in that. Still, I understand your point.”

“That all? I’m leaving then.”

“Sure.”

Heaven knows, Earth knows, you know and I know. I keep telling the tanuki that, but to think I’d need hearing it myself. What a terrifying tanuki boomerang.

It’s going to be hard clearing my image, isn’t it~ And to be honest I’m still embarrassed about that fan thing so please forget about it already…
