  7. That black knight thing, didn’t realise the hero is an eroge protagonist.That makes it like 200% worse. At least normal harem protagonists usually stop at unintentional sexual harassment, not whatever eroge ‘protagonist’ don’t stop at (namely rape).

    And counter stop is amazing with is pseudo game mechanics, and the like

              2. I know you translate web novels and aren’t in the business of teaching Japanese to the eager hopefuls, and I know this post is a year and a half old…

                …BUT:

                I’m a beginner at Japanese; I’ve learned my Hiragana and Katakana, I know maybe ~50 Kanji and more than 100 words and I’ve learned enough Japanese passively by watching anime to get the rough gist of what is being said for anime that utilise mostly basic Japanese (and sometimes intermediate Japanese). Anyway, I can’t really continue learning Kanji & Vocab without grammar.

                And grammar is the bane of my existence.

                No matter how many explanations I read on the difference between は and が, it makes just a little bit of sense to me what the difference is, based on Tae Kim’s explanation. I’ve read a number of times in several different places that Tae Kim’s Guide leaves out a lot of stuff and works best as a revision guide, rather than a comprehensive explanation; falling short as a beginner’s guide.

                Basically, my question is:

                “What do you think would work best as a supplement (or complement) to Tae Kim’s Guide for someone struggling with wrapping their head around grammar fundamentals?”

                I’d be very grateful for any advice, links, or whatever you’ve got.

                1. Though this isn’t Este’s recommendation, I thought I’d just put my thoughts out there too. If you’re looking to systematically learn the language, then go the route many people have done in school by looking at professional textbooks that offer explanations and examples. One decent one would be the Genki series, which is what most schools use in my area.

                2. Also not Este’s recommendation. I cannot really vouch for this site as I haven’t really used it much myself, but perhaps you may find useful as a free resource: http://www.imabi.net/

                  Also I personally feel like the process of learning vocabulary and kanji is involved enough that it’s worthwhile doing even without knowledge of grammar. Even with grammar you can still miss out of correct usage and grammar, and you refine your knowledge of the words with experience anyway. Commiting kanji to memory is a long process that I don’t think hurts to get an start early on.

                    I actually started using Imabi yesterday, and it seems to be very comprehensive. Moreso, even, than Genki. I aim to learn Kanji, vocab and grammar all at the same time, but I’m so weak with grammar to the point where I know maybe three basic grammar points.

  10. Not Japanese, but Daybreak on Hyperion features a male protagonist… with a vagina, after an arrogant Noble performs a rather… unorthodox familiar summoning ritual. Gender Bender should count if you’e including Alice Tale, which is a Transfer-type, not a reincarnation, though both would probably qualify as a metempsychosis, or a transmigration of a soul to another body. That said, in Daybreak’s case it’s just as likely to be a metamorphosis with a physical transmigration, considering Kaede kept her stuff from when she was a he (well, only what he had on him).

    But in practice they are, because new body and new life in a new world. This is almost like reincarnation

    Although not contain the TG factor, the context is similar to Burikko (considered reincarnation-theme in some websites), or maybe is not explain the truth and the MC die in the first chapter (who know)

    Not like if you want to write words like “understanding” in Japanese that the result is just 1symbol?

    What I mean is that… There’s no combined words into 1symbol in hiragana? Well… katakana is pretty much the same…
    I memorized the hira and kana symbols in a span of few days and started drilling afterwards even now…

    I tried to learn kanji and downloaded the app at app store…
    After taking a peek at 1st level lessons… I already spat blood… Too much…and many… Can you recommend me a source in learning kanji?

  20. This list is surprisingly short. Is it only my limited scope, or are there way too few (interesting) female characters in LNs/WNs (in general)? Most seem to be mere plot devices and when there’s a good woman MC, chances are it was a man, before [deus ex machina] gave him a vagina. Is there no audience for this, or why is that?

    1. There are female protagonist web novels for sure. Read a few. Simply not translated. Might make them next teaser. Theres this one about an office
      lady who transfers to a world where kemonomimi people keep humans as pets (because theyre cute, obedient and can talk). Naturally an ikemen picks her up and adopts her. Not rly suited for this bbblog though.

    2. If you’ve never heard of the bechdel test, google it. It’s not unique to LNs/WNs… But you’re basically seeing a filtered list. A story has to be read, understood, and liked by the translator enough to share with everyone, and when fan translators are mostly male, they’ll be able to more easily identify with male MCs. Even if the MC was only male for part of the prologue.

I think it’s a pretty nice blend of comedy and d’aww-inducing fluff. The title I came up with was “The Magic Academy’s Romantic Circumstances.”

            That being said, I’d be curious as to what the base criteria of (most) series here is, aside from female leads. Personal enjoyment? A web translation? A light/web novel series? What exactly determines a light novel? It can be argued that there exist “English Light Novels”, stories written with common tropes and themes commonly existent within Japanese light novels.
            That being said, that was not exactly the point of this very late follow-up comment.

            I just felt it’d be interesting to note that, after seeing your previous comment on Worm, I decided to read it. I have since, in the past 2-3 days, read the first 15 arcs and effectively ruined my sleeping habits. Fun stuff.
            I really need to thank you for making this list — I’ve taken the time out of the past month (*cough* sleep *cough*) to track down around three quarters of it, and I was not disappointed.

            3. And um, yes, generally translated stuff. Mostly translated Japanese stuff.

              This isn’t really a list of ‘LNs’ or anything, and I’ve debated about the definition of ‘LN’ as both a Japanese and English word before… But in general, I’ve argued that as an English word, it should only refer to anime-esque Japanese works. Mostly because we already have a corresponding term for the Japanese term; young adult fiction.

I know how you feel, at first i was doubting whether or not to read Worm, since at that time I was more into Asian novels rather than American N. but it blew my mind, Taylor’s life during the whole journey from beginning was astonishing. I lost a few hours of sleep but it was worthy.

  49. I was wondering if you came across a series called ”maou the yusha” I thought it was a translated Japanese web novel but it turns out its an original and a chapter is released weekly. Its very entertaining and hopefully its a good read for u. Basically about a girl who reincarnates as the maou who finds out that all the preceding maous were killed by the yusha…. and ill let u decide if you want to carry on.

But yer i think you should go and check it out again cause there has been an improvement in the style of writing.

I don’t no, I probably should of used another word to describe the novel. Its an emotional whirlpool sometimes I love her joyfulness and her idea of living life to the fullest…. but then I wonder how the actual frick does do ot so easily.

        2. Plus, she herself is a kind and somewhat simple person so I don’t know if she thinks it, but pretty much anybody else in her position would be maddened that the original Aika threw away her life, don’t you think?

          The protagonist and her parents struggled with her illness for 16 years. She never got to go outside or experience anything, and not only that, she vaguely knew that she wouldn’t have a future. Her parents, after working hard to support her for 16 years finally lost her to death as well.

          In comparison, this spoilt Aika girl, who’s surrounded by all these wonderful people (as protagonist-chan can attest to) just threw away her healthy body and life, probably without much thought to how her parents feel.

          Yeah, there should be guilt about living somebody else’s life, but a more vicious character might feel outrage rather than guilt, and think of it as making the best of a life and relationships that the original ingrate threw away.

          Sure, it takes either shamelessness or emotional-simplicity to not think too much about warmth that should have been showered on somebody else, but after dealing with the emotions she did in her first life, perhaps it just isn’t a big deal as it would be for you or me.

          I mean, she did spend almost her entire knowing life confined to a hospital. She didn’t know any friends, and the emotional pressure she had to deal with and the way in which her mind and values matured would obviously be different to a normal person.
