Chapter 13 – “I shall punish Bebe.”

The fight began between the Decarabia[Demon Destroying Pentagram] Knight, Lepes, and the failure(False Kin), Bebe. From their raw fighting spirit, it seems both sides had a history with each other. Lepes’ expression was particularly bloodcurdling. I could tell that he placed his everything on the line, in order to destroy demons. On the other hand, Bebe faced him with a dismissive sneer.

Damned Bebe. You dare to act insolent? Showing such an attitude despite your measly mana? No wonder the humans make light of you.

Lepes roared before attacking Bebe with a slash. Bebe responded by firing magic bullets to keep Lepes in check, while black flames appeared at his fingertips, one after another. Any trees that touched those flames disappeared in an instant, but despite the shield and sword in hand, Lepes avoided the flames with inhuman speed.

“You only know how to run! How insolent.”

“Shut up! I’ll send you lot to the grave!”

Lepes and Bebe continued their battle as they jeered at each other. However, perhaps due to the difference in experience, Lepes became cornered as the fight prolonged. And eventually, Bebe’s darkness magic caught up with him.

“GUHUH-!”

The magic destroyed his balance. Unwilling to lose this opening, Bebe began to chant a high level magic.

“Fwo fwo, take this. Fire Shout[Roar of Hellfire]!

The whole area was enveloped in flame. Even Lepes was forced onto the defensive, so he tried to protect himself from the flames.

“W-, T-This is the power of d-demons…? It’s on a totally different level to us!”

“I-, I can’t believe it… T-That man’s power is even higher than Remilia-sama’s.”

The Public Safety Force all commented as they watched the battle.

Haahhhh~ That they have mistaken something of this level to be the power of demons brings me endless vexation. However, going out of my way to correct them would bring needless suspicion, and runs counter to Oneesama’s goal.

Now then, what shall I do…

It is not yet time to openly reveal my identity to the humans. But it would not do if I did not punish these failures(False Kin) for their transgressions. Should I separate just this lot from the area? Speaking of which, the human named Lepes had prepared a teleportion spell, had he not.

Fumu. Though the magic equation is not yet complete, it has reached a stage where completing the remainder is simple.

Well then, shall I use you?

I overrode it with my own magic equation and activated it.

“Teleport!”

The moment I activated the spell, a magic circle appeared on the spot.

“Wha-!? Who activated the fucking spell!?”

“Fwo fwo, it seems that a third party has intervened.”

“W-What the? What the? This magic circle has suddenly… S-Shit! E-EVERYONE RETREAAAAAAAATTT!”

The teleportation magic activated…

And then we appeared at Bebe’s garrison.

Hmph, bingo. Just by meddling with it a little, the destination was changed from an evacuation spot, to a place with a strong density of souls with mana similar to Bebe’s.

Fumu fumu, there they are. A gathering of failures! Beneath my eyes were hundreds of small fry, swarming about.

It appears that all of them are Bebe’s kin. I have never seen such sorry things before.

Honestly, that damned Bebe. How dare he pollute the world with all this garbage!

“Tsk, I don’t know who, but somebody messed with the magic equation.”

“W-WHAT THE! What the fuck is going on! W-We’re right in the middle of enemy territory now…!”

Even needless extras had tagged along. How strange. I only intended to teleport Bebe and whatnot. The teleportation array should have stayed well clear of the evacuees…

Why?

I looked at them.

From their expressions… I saw weakness, naturally, but also lowliness and vulgarity of character.

I see.

In other words, they abandoned their duty. The Public Safety Force had been in formation to protect the evacuees. But they simply wished to be the first to escape. So even though the array stayed clear of them, they jumped in of their own accord.

They tried to escape danger, but instead jumped in head-first. Such irony.
Some extras have gotten in the way of my spectating, but well, that is fine. They fall within the acceptable margin of error.

“V-Viceroy, w-what on earth is this?”

Bebe’s kin were visibly shocked by the sudden intrusive.

“Fwo fwo fwo, how lucky for me. You lot are to surround them and prevent their escape.”

“U-, Understood.”

Bebe’s army moved to surround us.

“Shit. Looks like I’m surrounded.”

“L-, Lepes-dono, what should we…?”

“What? You guys got wrapped up as well? You’re going to get in the way of our battle, so get the hell out of here.”

“H-, However, we cannot escape while trapped like this.”

“Like I care. You guys are still technically Public Safety Force, aren’t you. If you’re going to spout such pathetic bullshit, then I’ll cut you down on the spot.”

“N-, No way…”

Abandoned by Lepes, the Public Safety Force members all had looks of despair. Lepes paid these weaklings no heed, and raised his sword. It seemed that he was looking for a way to break past the blockade.

“F-, Fuck it all! Now that it’s come to this, it’s all or nothing. We’re going to look for a weak spot to break through from.”

“Yeah, as if we can deal with a fight between these monsters. We’d better run now.”

“Oi, one brat got mixed up in this. What do we do?”

“Like we have the time for that shit. We’re all nobles. The life of one brat can’t compare.”

“True. Actually, it’s a lucky break. While they’re busy beating this brat to death, we’ll have some time to escape.”

Saying that, the Public Safety members tried to escape before me.

Fumu, just perfect.

“How irritating. You shall move!”

“W-, What――GUHAH-!”

“O-Oi, brat! Don’t get in our――HEBUU-!”

After getting in their way and thrusting them back, I stood in front of Bebe.

“Fwo fwo fwo, and who might you be, little human missy? No need to hurry. After I’m done with this one, I’ll have plenty of time to play with you.”

“Hihihi, Viceroy, please let us have your leftovers!”

“Yeah, what he said. This one is quite the beauty. I’m going to eat her up!”

“Hahhh, hahhh, V-Viceroy, I-I c-can’t hold on any more. I have to have her.”

The moment I appeared, Bebe’s army stirred into action. What a vulgar bunch. However little it may be, once I consider that these things have anything to do with me, I start to feel depressed. Unless I immediately clean the world of these failures, I won’t rest at ease.

“Bebe, you have grown quite impudent in these few thousand years. It fills me with nostalgia to recall the days when you would tremble in fear of the enemy.”

“Fwo fwo fwo, what is this all of a sudden…? Human, after saying something like that, don’t think that you will get off easy. I assure you, you will not die at rest!”

“So you do not realise, if I suppress my mana? To forget your own master, even insolence has its limits!”

“Master, you say?”

“Hmph, so you have forgotten this face of mine!?”

“I-I-It can’t be!? That bearing, and that visage… Are you Camilla-sama!?”

“I-, Is that really her?”

“T-, That’s our True Ancestor?”

Bebe’s lot all looked confused. Well, none of them have actually met me, so I suppose that reaction is reasonable. I think they will at least listen to Bebe’s instructions, but…

“Y-, YOU LOOOOOOT! Y-Your heads are too high! Restrain yourselves! This is our esteemed True Ancestor. Our master and lady!”

Bebe’s expression suddenly changed as he screamed, silencing the lot of them into prostration.

“Hmph, so you finally remember your place! Honestly, you sure have grown impudent during the time I was sealed!”

“N-, No way… W-, We merely strove to rule the world as your kin, Camilla-sama…”

“And I am saying that, is being impudent. Ruling the world? The likes of you will? Jokes are supposed to be told, not acted out!”

“H-, However, for your sake, Camilla-sama, and for the sake of your eternal fame, and for the sake of spreading the Malferand[Greatest Demons] name through the world, we――”

That. That is exactly what I speak of. When did I bestow the likes of you the permission to use my surname! Know your place! You shall apologise with your deaths!”

“…”

“What? What is that rebellion in your eyes? You used my surname without permission. As though that was not enough, you then encroached with your muddy shoes upon on our territory, the Capital. Bebe, that conduct is unforgivable. All of you will suicide, at once!”

“NUUU! W-, While you spent these millenia sealed away, I have steadily increased my power. I-I am d-different to you!”

“In the short time I have not seen you, it appears that you’ve grown quite an impertinent mouth.”

I approached to hand down punishment, when Bebe suddenly shouted,

“EEI! There is no way that Camilla-sama would appear in a place like this! T-, THIS THING IS A FAKEE! What an extremely rude thing they are! Kill them! Kill them, I say!”

“Hooh~ A fake, you say. Bebe, is that your answer?”

“B-, But Viceroy, to bare our fangs towards the esteemed True Ancestor is…”

“F-, Fool! Just look at their mana! How could someone so measly possibly be our True Ancestor! TIS A FAKE!”

“T-, That certainly makes sense… Alright. Everybody, this woman dared pretend to be our esteemed True Ancestor. It’s time for a festival of blood!”

“”YEAHH!””

Bebe’s army approached me, and began shrinking the encirclement. Counting from the left is seven-thousand mana, four-thousand mana, five thousand… Hmph. Even counting is a waste of time. They are all the very picture of small fry. I shall clean them up in one go.

They think to defeat me with this level of power? Are they half-asleep, or are they simply insane?

“Ku ku, my goodness. It appears that once you exceed a certain level of anger, your face begins to smile instead!”

I released my suppressed mana in full. Like an ocean erupting through a dam, the torrents of mana swept through everything in the surroundings.

Raid on the Capital – Chapter 12

Everybody, please check the FAQ first before asking me questions.
If it’s not on there, please feel free and ask. I only get annoyed at questions when the same one has been asked 10+ times, and by then I’ll have updated the FAQ.

Thank you for your consideration, guys!

Usually I take the time to research stuff and leaves notes and whatnot, but I still don’t have any clue about Mahjong, so you’ll have to work that shit out yourselves, lol. I actually translated all this stuff with the help of my friends Yuushin(雄心), Bicky (kookiedreamer), and Steel.

But here’s a tsubamegaeshi video at least:

Chapter 12 – Jessica and the Conclusion to the Final Game

According to Tilea-san, ‘Tsubamegaeshi’ is a cheating technique in ‘Marge’Ong’. It wasn’t a combat technique.

Tilea-san, if you want to win in games so badly that you’re cheating, I think you might be an addict.

But according to Tilea-san, as long as you succeed in using it, you can dominate the flow of the game.

Tsubaegaeshi――to prepare a winning hand within your ‘wall’, and then looking for a chance to swap your ‘hand’ with your ‘wall’.

If you succeed, it is possible to continue getting ‘yakuman’, and even turn your situation around.

From what I hear, it sounds high risk, but at the same time promises high return. I don’t think it would be impossible for Tilea-san.

But still, to even know a cheating technique like this… Even if she isn’t intelligent, her knowledge of this game is the real thing.

“Tilea-san, do you think you can do it?”

“Yeah, I definitely will! And you know, there’s actually something I wanted to ask of you, Jessica-chan…”

“Yes, what is it?”

“While I’m using the Tsubamegaeshi, please distract the demons.”

“It certainly sounds like a flashy technique. I guess they would notice without a distraction.”

“That’s right. So can I ask this of you?”

“I understand. But what should I do?”

“Let’s see~ For example, couldn’t you use your charms as a woman to distract them?”

“Eh-!? T-, That kind of seduction is impossible for me. And they’re demons, you know.”

“No, no, demons are still men. It’ll definitely work, I think.”

“N-, No way… That’s just impossible…”

“It’s fine, I said. This is also for the sake of defeating the demons, okay?”

“B-But… It-, It really is impossible for me!”

“I BELIEVE IN YOU JESSICA-CHAN!”

“Uuu, if you say that much, then why don’t you do it, Tilea-san!”

“That’s impossible. I’ll need to concentrate on the Tsubamegaeshi, and more importantly, they wouldn’t have any interest in me.”

“Do you really think so?”

“Yeah. That’s how it is. Those ‘Wisdom Unit’ guys all act like elites, so I bet they’re actually into lolis. It’s pretty much a given that elites are lolicons.”

“Lo-, lo… li?”

“Oh, lolicon, you see. It basically refers to the bunch that are into tiny girls with modest chests like yours, Jessica-chan.”

W-, What the heck is with this person. I-, Is she picking a fight or something?

“Muu, Tilea-san, even if I look like this I’ve grown since last year, okay!?”

“No, no, you’re definitely still a splendid loli, Jessica-chan. That loli face and your loli voice, and on top of that there’s your loli figure. You’re basically irresistable to those types.”

“…”

“And that’s how it is, so it’s impossible for me. I mean, look, my chest is huge, and I’ve got a great figure, so I’m totally outside their strike zones, right? Compared to me, you’re definitely the better choice.”

W-, What do I do?

I’m starting to want to kill her for real.

……
…………
………………

N-, No. I can’t. I can’t, I can’t. I have to control my anger. Tilea-san doesn’t mean anything bad by this. She’s like the personification of airheaded. She definitely never thinks anything, and just speaks whatever’s on her mind.

Also, the victims in town are increasing by the second right now. We don’t have the leisure to waste time here. We have to end this farce once and for all!

I very unwillingly consented to Tilea-san’s plan, and sat at the table where the demons were waiting. The game started again. With my hands shaking from nervousness, I piled up the ‘hai(tiles)’ while Tilea-san was building a winning ‘hand’ inside her ‘wall’.

Looking at her out of the corner of my eye…

Ooh, what nimble movements. She was stacking ‘hai(tiles)’ in the blink of an eye.

A few minutes later…

Tilea-san looked my way. Apparently she was done preparing.

C-, Can’t be helped. Abandon your pride, Jessica! In order to defeat the demons! In order to save the people!

After taking a deep breath, my eyes shot towards the demons.

And then…

“W-, Wow, my body is getting so hot~♪”

I brought attention to my chest as I fanned my shirt, twisting my body to draw their attention.

“Quite right, girly. This ‘Marge’Ong’ game is truly a strategic game. My heart is burning with excitement!”

“Just as you say, Horus-sama. Because of an idiot at the table, things are a little spoilt, but even so, this has still been an interesting game.”

“…”

“What’s the matter, girly? Did you not speak because you felt the same way?”

“Y-, Yes.”

Aahh… I think something important just broke inside me. I softly did my shirt back up, and fixed my collar.

Uuu, Tilea-san, look how much I’ve done for us! You’ve succeeded, right!?

I looked at Tilea-san with my teary eyes. Tilea-san’s mouth was curved into a smirk. Apparently she succeeded.

A-, Amazing. She did it in that little instant? To slip past the eyes of the demons, just what kind of super speed had she moved at? While I was feeling shocked at her fast work,

“The die says 4.”

“Then I guess I suppose it is me.”

“”AHH!?””

The two of us raised our voices in synchrony.

T-, That’s right. This cheat depends on the dice roll. The ‘hai(tiles)’ will be coming from Vice General Gilgant’s ‘wall’, so there was no meaning to the ‘Tsubamegaeshi’.

I whispered to Tilea-san.

“Tilea-san, can’t you do something about the die?”

“T-, That… it’s i-impossible even f-for me…”

She shook her head side to side.

So in the end, the game continued normally without ‘Tsubamegaeshi’ getting its chance to shine…

“‘Ron’!”

“G-, GYABON!”

The ‘hanchan’ just finished. Tilea-san’s second ‘Bust’ was determined. Before the ‘shaaba(West Round)’ began, I had another strategy meeting with Tilea-san.

“Tilea-san, the game is impossible to win already. Let’s do battle instead!”

“…I-, I can still-, I can still do it. Jessica-chan, I haven’t lost yet. This is where it begins. This is where my turnaround begins!”

Her eyes were bloodshot. Typical of a losing gambler.

“Tilea-san, it’s a shame, but we should admit defeat! The enemy is a cut above us. We have to think about cutting our losses!”

To be honest, it isn’t just one cut, but over ten cuts, but even I’m starting to feel bad for her. It’s been a crushing defeat for her every round till now, so I was careful to be a little gentler in my words.

“Y-, YOU’RE WRONGG! Jessica-chan, t-this is… Umm, yeah! I just haven’t got my sense for the game back yet. That’s all it is, okay!”

“Tilea-san…”

Yep. She’s grown stubborn. She’s got quite a stubborn part to her, after all. Can’t be helped. I don’t think it’s going to help to let the game continue, but I’ll just let her do what she wants.

“Hahhh~ I understand.”

“Jessica-chan, this time I’ll really teach them a lesson, okay!”

“Ah-, Tilea-san, just one bit of advice. Please stop talking to yourself.”

“Talking to myself?”

“So you really didn’t notice.”

“What do you…?”

“Tilea-san, whenever you’re about to reach ‘tenpai’, you get really excited, and start screaming weirdly to yourself.”

“EHH-!? REALLY?”

“Yes. Also, please stop screaming “I MESSED UPPPPPPP――――!” whenever your ‘hand’ isn’t going well.”

“I-, I even do something like…”

“Yes. Also, the worst is when you get a ‘haku(White Dragon)’ in your ‘hand’. Each and every time, you say “Hmph. There it is. A slip.”  and I just don’t know what to do with you anymore…”

“Haha… I just kinda…”

“It’s because of that that the demons all know your information, Tilea-san.”

“Y-, Yeah.”

“There are lots of other things that you’re doing wrong, but I don’t think you’d remember if I only told you once, so at least please stop with the talking to yourself!”

“Y-, Yes.”

Well, I’ve warned her about what I can. As for how effective it’ll be… Aahh, I’m so uneasy.

But the struggle ended fruitlessly.

In the end, it was Horus’ overwhelming victory. Second place was Gilgant. Third place was me. Along the way, I realised that fighting with the demons was reckless, so I instead changed my target to Tilea-san. While somehow avoiding direct hits, I snatched points from Tilea-san, and managed to get myself into the positives. Unlike Tilea-san, I’ll immediately die if my mana gets taken, so I steeled my heart and did that.

I’m sorry, Tilea-san. I-, It’s not because you called me a ‘loli’ or anything, okay?

And then far, far, faaaar at the bottom was Tilea-san, and as expected, she was below minus 120,000 points. Because along the way, she began being targetted by me as well. Four games with a ‘Bust’, and on top of that, a ‘Yakitori’ penalty.

“☆∋★◆……GYOPOON”

Tilea-san collapsed onto the table. Aahh, I think I can see her soul escaping from her mouth. It must have been a shock to her.

“But still, Horus-sama, in the end it seems this one was simply a huge idiot.”

“Indeed. It looks like she won the Element Predict not through strategy, but simply miraculous luck.”

“Honestly, when I consider that our subordinates were killed by such a massive idiot…! Simply draining her of mana is much too lenient. We should execute her in a much crueller way, Horus-sama.”

“You certainly have a point, Gilgant. But the rules are the rules. If we break those rules, it will affect the pride of our unit. And moreover, this girl introduced us to as fun a game as ‘Marge’Ong’. In light of that achievement, shall we not spare her the worst punishment?”

“As expected of you, Horus-sama. Your self-respect is the pride of our Wisdom Unit.”

“Umu. Well then, time to have this massive idiot take responsibility for losing.”

“Quite so. Hey, massive idiot. No, since she makes weird sounds and comes up with ridiculous strategies, I suppose we should be calling her a buffoon.”

“True. This girl is a buffoon. Well then, Gilgant. Attach the mana absorption tool to this buffoon.”

“Sir!”

Gilgant did as Horus ordered, grabbing Tilea-san by the head.

“Come now, buffoon! Raise your face! The tool does not hurt so much. We are allowing you to die comfortably, so be thankful to Horus-sama!”

“…”

“Oi, do you not hear me! Buffoon!”

“I-, I’ve been listening, BASTAAAAAAAAARDS!”

She suddenly raised her head as she produced a kukanomi from her pocket, smashing it into the demons.

“W-, What are――G- GUHAH-!”

“S-, She plans on――GUEGH-!”

“Hahh, hahh… LISTEN UP, GODDAMMIT! MAHJONG IS A GAME OF LUCKK! I-, IT’S NOT BECAUSE I’M DUMB OR ANYTHING, OKAYYY!? A-, And calling me buffoon and stuff… You know, I used to be praised in the neighbourhood as “Gosh, Sera-san’s daughter is such a bright child” you know! DO YOU GET ITTTT!?”

Tilea-san roared. She was understandably mad.

But it’s hardly their fault…

Well, to begin with, I wanted her to just beat them up without a game, so this is fine.

Aahh aaahh, even though Horus and the others are already dead, Tilea-san is shaking them by the collars. It’s like she’s not even paying attention. Tilea-san continued to roar. I suppose I’d better stop her now.

“Hahhh, hahhh, a-, alright! You lot, the next game is poker! This time for sure, I’ll――”

“Tilea-san.”

“Aah, Jessica-chan. Just wait a moment. This time for sure――”

“Tilea-san! They’re already dead.”

“EH-!?”

At my words, Tilea-san began to stare at the corpses of the demons. The kukanomi she had thrown unconsciously had hit all of them dead in the face. They took her amazing throws at close range, after all. Looks like these guys couldn’t handle it either.

“J-, Just as planned… Y-, You know, Jessica-chan, this was all one big plan.”

“I see…”

“Y-, Yeah, I made them think I was really into the game, so that when they let their guards down, I could really nail them, you know!?”

“I see…”

“J-, Jessica-chan, please don’t look at me with such distant eyes.””

“Anyway, Tilea-san, let’s get out of here for now.”

“Y-, Yeah. I’d better hurry to the shelter where Timu is waiting. If I recall, this was east, right?”

“No, that’s wrong. The location has actually changed and… Just follow me, please.”

“I see. Roger. I’ll be in your care, Jessica-chan.”

Sorry, Tilea-san. The location hasn’t actually changed at all. But I’m sure of it now. Without Tilea-san, we can’t defeat the demons. For now, we’ve defeated one of their four generals. I need Tilea-san to defeat the others.

I searched for mana in all directions.

Once I find large spots of mana, I’ll lead Tilea-san there. I feel bad about this, but I hope she’ll accompany me for just a little longer.

Eventually, I found something.

Huh? Why? W-Why does a mana like this exist?

“Hmph. There it is. A slip.”
A modification of Akagi’s catchphrase. Or I suppose, the exact catchphrase of ‘Akagin’.

Also, one more,

Raid on the Capital – Chapter 11

Everybody, please check the FAQ first before asking me questions.

Thank you for your consideration, guys!

Chapter 11 – Jessica and the Final Game

The demons were shuddering. After all, after assuming that it would be a dead set result, this kind of result was thrust before them.

On the other hand, Tilea-san was all smiles. She was getting ahead of herself. Her attitude was incredibly filled with confidence now.

“Tilea-san.”

“Jessica-chan. Huhu, these guys aren’t a big deal. They’re a bunch of simpletons. At first I was scared because I heard it was a death game, but if this is all, it looks like we’ll be fine.”

“I-, I see…”

“Mn, so relax. Right now, it’s like I’ve been possessed by the Gambling Warrior Akagin. I can see it. I can see through it all! Their thoughts are completely visible to me! FUHUHAAHAAHAAHAAHA!”

Or so she declared full of confidence, but what I suspected painted a different story. Anyway, let’s see if I’m right. While the demons were still stunned, I snuck into the Field(Battleground).

Uuu, it reeks of blood.

Inside, the corpses all showed expressions of disbelief. While ignoring the stench that assaulted my nose, I went to investigate the helmets worn by the demons, and the swords pierced through them.

Uu, this is so grossss~

But I want to know the truth.

While enduring the nausea, I checked them one by one. It felt like the corpses were staring at me with their widened eyes. I felt like I would faint if I looked back, so I just desperately endured as I checked.

The result――

First match. Tilea-san’s sword was fire, and the demon’s helmet was fire. Even though they should have neutralised as the same attribute… Tilea-san killed him in one strike.

Second match. Tilea-san’s helmet was fire. The demon’s sword was water. Even though it should have been a Critical Hit, Tilea-san neutralised it.
To have defended against a strengthened elemental attack, just how hard is she.

In the same way, I investigated the third, and fourth match…

I found that Tilea-san defended against three Critical Hits, while she attacked two No Damages. In terms of predicting the opponent, it was a crushing defeat for her.

Haha, in front of Tilea-san, rules don’t mean a thing, huh. Although I had guessed this, it really is too ridiculous.

What on earth is she?

She’s definitely no human. Then, a beastman, elf, or perhaps a dragonoid? But her physical characteristics don’t match either of them, and her completely extraordinary combat strength is closer to a demon’s.

Then, a demon?

Hm~mm, but the attribute I feel from her is closer to light than dark. So I guess she really is a Hero’s descendant? She herself denied it, but it’s the one that makes the most sense. Her intelligence is one thing, but the rest of her abilities are like the stuff of legends.

While thinking about the questions I’ve been having this whole time, I left the room to find Tilea-san provoking the demons.

“Well? Who’s my next opponent?”

“H-, How dare you! Then I, the second in command shall…”

“Wait, Gilgant. This is the first time in a while that an opponent has excited my heart. This girl is worthy of being my opponent!”

“Then Horus-sama, you yourself shall be participating?”

“Umu. I shall personally bring the hammer down on her.”

“I see. So the big boss himself has finally come out, huh.”

“Huhu, girly, may I ask your name?”

“It’s Tilea.”

“Then Tilea. Let’s play a game where we use a mana absorption tool.”

“A mana absorption tool?”

“Indeed. It’s exactly as it sounds; a machine that absorbs mana. Our next game will feature one. We shall use mana as chips to play our game!”

Mana as chips!?

There’s no doubt that no matter the game, having more chips gives you an advantage. Demons already begin with high mana. That makes it a handicap from the very start. My mana would be out of the question. It wouldn’t even be a game if your chips ran out right away. On the other hand, Tilea-san overwhelms them in the mana department.

But as for using her head…

Already, I can see in my mind, the scene of her mountain of chips disappearing in a blink.

“Tilea-san, we’re at a disadvantage here.”

“Y-, Yeah. Using mana as chips is just way too advantageous to them.”

“Fumu. You are correct in your discontent. Very well then, in exchange, you two shall choose the game. In that case, if you come up with the right rules, even you have a chance of winning.”

“Ohh~? Is it fine for me to choose? No matter what kind of game?”

“Indeed. As long as there are no overwhelming faults with it, any game is fine.”

“I see… Then it’s going to be a mahjong match!”

Marge’Ong!? What kind of game is that?

Tilea-san suddenly proposed the name of some game I’d never heard of. It’s not like I think I know of all the games in the world, but ‘Marge’Ong’ is just so alien sounding.

That’s fine in and of itself, but I’m just hoping that it’s not another one of Tilea-san running wild as usual…

“‘Marge’Ong’ you say? I am a man proficient in all fields, and yet I have never heard of this ‘Marge’Ong’. Interesting. So what kind of game is this? It is a game suggested by you, who has overwhelmed my Wisdom Unit. I am truly intrigued.”

At Horus’ prompt, Tilea-san began to explain the rules of ‘Marge’Ong’ to us.

From what she said, ‘Marge’Ong’ is a four-way competition. Four players sit around a table, and tiles called ‘hai’ are gathered from a total pool of 136 in order to form combinations called ‘yaku’. This is done numerous times, and points are gathered as it happens. The results of the game are determined at the end of the game, when the points are tallied.

A-, Amazing.

From what I heard, not only does ‘Marge’Ong’ have a well developed set of rules, you can tell that it’s a very strategic game. An interesting game that fits gambling perfectly. If ‘Marge’Ong’ spread in the capital, I’ll bet everybody would love it too.

But still, it was shocking that Tilea-san knew the rules of ‘Marge’Ong’ off by heart. Considering how bad she is with using her head, it’s quite a rare feat.

Could it be that Tilea-san was really into ‘Marge’Ong’ back in her hometown?

“Fumu, what a truly interesting game! Very well, the next game shall be this ‘Marge’Ong’.”

“But well, although I was the one who recommended it, what are we going to do about the mat and tiles?”

“It is but a simple matter for us to create them through magic.”

Horus created the ‘hai’, ‘riichi stick’ and other things that she mentioned were used in ‘Marge’Ong’. It was an incredibly high level use of creation magic. I thought so about the swords and helmets too, but demons really do use a level of magic that humans can’t compare to.

And then…

“They’re done. As ‘Marge’Ong’ is a four player game, this shall be a tag match.”

“Jessica-chan, I’ll help you out, so could you participate too?”

“Y-, Yes.”

“Thanks. Also, do you understand the rules to mahjong?”

“Yes, more or less. Only, I’m a little uneasy about the scoring for the ‘yaku’, so could I trouble you to write them on paper later?”

“Got it. Are you guys fine too?”

“Who do you think you are asking? Do not make light of the Wisdom General! Hearing just one explanation is enough for rules of this level.”

As expected of Wisdom General Horus. It seems he’s noticed the nature of ‘Marge’Ong’, and is already forming strategies too. I desperately tried to memorise the things written on Tilea-san’s memo.

“That reminds me, shall we not use mana as this ‘skoring bord’!”

“Yes, I’m fine with that.”

“Ku ku, your attitude is praiseworthy. But are you fine with that? The mana of a human will run out in no time. Once you run out of mana, it begins to take your vitality, and once you run out of that as well there awaits only death, you know.”

“I’m completely fine, I said!”

“W-W-, Tilea-san, please think this through! If you get too ahead of yourself, things will end in disaster!”

“Huhu, Jessica-chan, if this were any other game, you might be right, but I never lose in mahjong. I may look like this, but I used to be famous at the game centre under the name ‘Shioda the Stripper’ you know.”

Shiyodah Thess Rippah? Geme Sentah? What the heck is she on about? Tilea-san is talking about stuff I don’t understand again.

“Tilea-san, it looks like you’re confident but the opponent is on a different level this time. Even if they’re beginners at ‘Marge’Ong’, it doesn’t mean…”

“Jessica-chan, your worries are needless. From the earlier game, I’m already sure of it. There’s actually nothing to fear about demons. Even if I don’t have much mana, as long as I keep winning, there’s no problem.”

Aahh, it’s no good. Because she thinks she won all the matches earlier, Tilea-san is on an unstoppable rampage.

What do I do? Should I just let her play?

Hmmmm… Well, I guess that’s fine. Tilea-san’s chip(mana) is way beyond the norm. She seems confident in ‘Marge’Ong’ too, and as long as she doesn’t lose too badly, it should be fine. And also, this time it’s a tag match so I’ll be playing as well. If anything happens, I’ll follow up for her.

And so, the match began at the table with Wisdom General Horus, and Vice-General Gilgant. We shuffled the ‘hai(tiles)’ as we began forming strategies. Tilea-san began as ‘ton(East)’ or the dealer.

Tilea-san, staying as the first dealer is really important, you know.

But my wishes came to nothing, because she immediately lost the dealership.

Right now, Horus in the ‘shaa(West)’ corner was dealer.

But still, in just these few turns, I really felt the depth of this game. I already had a hint from listening to the rules, but after playing it myself, I became keenly aware of it. When the opponent is a ‘hai(tile)’ away from completion, it’s standard to cut your losses, but it’s also important to decide how aggressively you go about things. And it’s difficult to determine when somebody will be ‘tenpai’, or waiting for their winning ‘hai(tile)’.

I looked at ‘shaake(West Player)’ Horus’ ‘sutehai(discarded tiles)’. In ‘Marge’Ong’, the ‘sutehai’ are an important source of information on the states of the other players. You observe their discarded tiles, the ‘hand’ you guess they’re building, and their facial expressions. In the 5th round, it was hard to tell if he was ‘tenpai’ from his ‘sutehai’. Even if I assume that he’s ‘tenpai’, I think that ‘tanyao’ is the best that he can do, but…

Uuu, it’s impossible. It’s too hard to tell with confidence. Horus is combining his wiliness into his plots and running circles around us. Not just that, the Vice General Gilgant is more intelligent than I am. The way he’s handling the ‘hai’ is efficient to the extreme.

Their hands are fast, and they have no openings.

I frantically tried to read their ‘hands’ while hiding my own information, but they were steps ahead of me.

Uu, we’re stuck in their pace for this game as well.

Just as I was lamenting,

“It’s here, here, heeeeere! Hell yeah!”

I heard Tilea-san talking to herself. I-, It’s no good. She’s an open book. She’s definitely in ‘tenpai’. Looking at her ‘sutehai’… She’s probably waiting for a ‘ryanman(20,000)’ or an ‘uuman(50,000)’.

Aahh aahh, Tilea-san arranges all her tiles from highest to lowest, so you can completely read her ‘hand’. At first, Horus and the others all thought that Tilea-san was a sage, so they assumed that it was all an act.

But… they know now, don’t they?

Maybe they thought that she won in Elemental Predict due to pure luck. The true is different though.

“Hmph, this situation is too good not to riichi.”

As expected, Tilea-san declared ‘riichi’. But only a little later, Tilea-san received a direct hit from Horus.

“‘Ron’, ‘Pinfu, Tanyao, Iipeikou…’ It’s ‘Mangan’!”

“GAHAH-!”

Tilea-san screamed, before dropping her shoulders in defeat. I drew my mouth to her ears.

“T-, Tilea-san, are you okay?”

“Ha ha, I-, I’m fine, fine. Huhu, geez, w-, with this handicap, the game is finally worth playing. Ahaha, hahah…”

Tilea-san’s eyes have become dots.

Even since Horus became the dealer, he’s been sniping Tilea-san. Most of her ‘skoring stik’ is gone now, so I have to try my best or else!

Then, in the next game…

After a few rounds, Horus placed the ‘riichi stick’ on the table.

“‘Riichi’!”

A ‘riichi’ from the dealer. I don’t want to take this direct. I looked carefully at Horus’ ‘hand’. I get the feeling that something big is coming. A ‘mangan’, no, a ‘haneman’-class ‘yaku’ I expect.

It’s vexing, but we’d better fold.

I just hope Tilea-san follows…

“Kan!”

Eh-!? I doubted my ears. Tilea-san suddenly shouted ‘kan’.

Tilea-san, do you understand the situation? Horus just declared ‘riichi’.

Speaking of which, Tilea-san has been meaninglessly declaring ‘kan’ for a while now…

“Another kan!”

Eh? Eh? What the heck is this woman doing? I have no clue anymore. This is bad. At this rate, Horus is going to raise.

And then, just as I expected…

“I see. ‘Ron’, ‘Riichi, Tanyao, Pinfu… 2 Dora’ and then… Ohh. ‘Uradora’ as well. It’s a ‘Baiman’.”

“GAHAH-!”

Not “GAHAH”!

I couldn’t bear it, so I declared a time-out, and pulled Tilea-san away from the table to talk.

“Tilea-san, please cut it out already. You need to think properly!”

“U-, Umm… Y-, Yeah, I am, sort of.”

“Then why did you ‘kan’! He had already declared ‘riichi’. Why did you go out of your way to ‘kan’ when it had no strategic value, and only increased the risk? Or could it be that you actually had some reason to use ‘kan’ each time?”

“U-, Umm, well, as a rinshan user, I just kinda…”

“Hahh? Rinshan user, as in the ‘yaku’ ‘Rinshan Kaihou’? Why did you do something risky just for the sake of such a cheap yaku!”

“J-, Jessica-chan, your eyes are a little scary.”

“Do you really understand the situation? Tilea-san, at this rate, we’re going to ‘Bust’, you know.”

“I-, Is it that bad…?”

“…Tilea-san, the situation is extremely bad. At the moment, we’re definitely minus 30,000 points. In other words, we’ve lost 30,000 units of mana.”

“T-, Then… could it be that we’ve lost an active adventurer’s worth of mana?”

“Tilea-san, your thinking is too naive. The number of adventurers whose mana exceeds 10,000 in this world, can be counted with your fingers.”

“Eh? Really?”

“Yes. The S-ranked Remilia-sama is roughly 20,000 mana.”

“T-, That can’t be… W-, W-W-What do we do?”

“Well you see, at this rate, we’ll be at least minus 100,000 by the end of this game. Do you understand what minus 100,000 means?”

“W-, What does it mean?”

“It means that the mana we’ll have lost is equal to the legendary founder of magic, Camilla! Also, Tilea-san, this is a little hard to say, but Horus’ pride has been hurt because his subordinates lost. If you consider how motivated he is to win this, it won’t stop anywhere near 100,000 mana!”

“ABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABA!”

Ah-, uh oh. I may have threatened her a little much. Tilea-san just broke. But, just how much mana does Tilea-san actually have? Definitely over 10,000. I get the feeling that she might even have 100,000. I’m a beginner myself, so anything above 10,000 is just too powerful for me to measure. Perhaps even if we lose the game, Tilea-san will be totally fine. But games really are impossible for Tilea-san. I should try and convince her to change strategies.

“Tilea-san, there’s no point in continuing this game any more. Let’s give up!”

“Awawawa, I-, I guess you’re right. It’s just like you say, Jessica-chan. At this rate, it’s obvious that we won’t win normally.”

“Yes, that’s why battle should be our――”

“I-I’ll do it.  It’s time to do it. It’s down to my final plan, the Tsubamegaeshi!”

‘Tsubamegaeshi’? Apparently it’s a technique of some sort. Anyway, I wonder if I succeeded in getting her to battle.

Raid on the Capital – Chapter 10

Chapter 10 – Jessica and the Extraordinary

“Honestly, you can’t even remember the rules?”

“G-, Got a problem? I’ll remember it any minute now, so just you wait.”

“Then you’re an idiot! Comparing wits with an idiot like this would damage my pride as the Wisdom Unit’s Blitzkreig Unit Captain. Horus-sama, this blonde girl lacks the qualifications to participate in our game. Let us kill her immediately!”

“W-Wait a m-momenttt――! I-, Isn’t it too much to associate intelligence with memory! I’m actually really smart, okay? T-, To kill me is… PLEEASE LET ME PLAY THE GAMEEEE!”

“Enough, Gesu. We possess the advantage either way. And the girl from the academy seems to be a little smarter. You can enjoy your game with her. As for the blonde girl, you can simply consider her a way to get the other used to the game.”

“I-, I understand. If you say so, then I have no complaints and… w-, will endure.”

Aahh geez, they’re really saying whatever they want about her. Tilea-san, you can’t get sulky now. They might realise you aren’t all that smart. Well, perhaps they’ve already realised though…

It looks like this Gesu is proud to be Captain of the Horus Blitzkreig Unit. To play with an idi-… Ahem. To play with a pure person like Tilea-san must be quite a humiliation. Gesu was visibly dissatisfied with Horus’ decision, and glared reproachfully at Tilea-san.

“Hahh~ Why do I need to have a match with an idiot like you. An idiot like you is just going to die from a critical this very instant, so just prepare yourself!”

“…Y-, You guys, for a while now you’ve just been saying idiot idiot as much as you like, huh! So I’m having a teeny bit of trouble remembering the rules. So what! Hmph, games where you read each other’s thoughts are more about overall intelligence rather than simple memory strength!”

“Hmph. A girl with no merits except her big mouth. More importantly, are you still staring at that memo!? Hurry up!”

“Y-, You’re so noisy. Alright already. Ummm, so fire and water are opposites, and so are wood and wind… and wind and earth have good compatibility… mumble mumble…”

“…Oi, enough already. How long are you going to have me wait. Enough. I don’t care if you use your memo, so let’s enter the Field(Battleground) already.”

Tilea-san and Gesu headed into the special room prepared for their match. The game is going to played 1 vs 1, so third parties can’t enter. Additionally, the room was built so that Trace(Investigation) Magic can’t be used. After all, Trace Magic would allow you to tell what attributes everything had, so there would be no point in playing. The game was designed as a pure contest of reading the opponent. The armours and helmets all look alike, so the key is to predict what your opponent is going to do.

After the two of them entered, they apparently sat at a table. I couldn’t see inside, but I could hear Tilea-san’s voice.

Tilea-san, try your best! I gazed at the room in prayer.

“Come. You can begin the match. Show me the final struggles of an idiot!”

I could hear the pride in his voice. He’s probably got a good idea of her actual brain power. His tone was incredibly haughty.

“Well then, here I come. Umm, which should I start with… Okay, this one!”

“So you’re fine with that sword, I presume. Then come. Strike my helmet.”

“H-, Here we gooo! The first match! TORYAHHH!”

“Heh! Your scheme is as clear as day! I’ll be taking the No Dam――GUHUH-!”

“O-, Owah! What an incredible spray of blood… This sword is way too sharp. D-, Don’t blame me, okay?”

There went Tilea-san’s words of victory. Yes! As expected of Tilea-san. A single strike victory even with a demon as the opponent! It looks like she was lucky enough to chose the right element too.

“I-, Impossible!? Gesu of all people was defeated by that stupid-looking…?”

“Aye. And by a Critical Hit, no less!”

The demons were shocked and panicked.

“Then I am next! It appears that that idiot, Gesu, let his guard down. He is the shame of our Horus Unit!”

Another demon rose to the occasion. A more careful-looking man than Gesu, moved into the room.

“Listen up, girly! My brain power is three times that of Gesu’s. I am here to show you just how powerless you truly are!”

“C-, Come at me!”

“Well then, this time is my turn to attack. Quickly choose a helmet!”

“Eh-!? I thought I was…”

“Did you not only just attack Gesu? The next attack belongs to the demon team.”

“T-, That can’t be… Wait a moment!”

“Hurry up and choose! Or would you prefer to take my attack without a helmet?”

“O-, Okay. Just wait a moment. U-, Ummm, which should I… Okay, this one!”

“Ku ku, you dance in the palm of my hand. I’ll be taking a Critical Hit.”

“U-, UWAH! Whoa, my h-heart w-wasn’t rea-… Huh? It doesn’t hurt. Huhu, looks like it’s a No Damage.”

“I-, IMPOSSIBLE!? This is strange. My prediction was flawless. Show me your helmet!”

“Heh, what a sore loser. You simply made a mistake. Now then, hurry up and choose a helmet. Or would you prefer to take my strike without one?”

“R-, RIDICULOUS! Very well. A fluke never occurs twice. Now come. If you are going to strike me, then strike!”

“O-, Okay. Well then, TORYAHHH!”

“Fool. I have already seen through your fire――GUHAH-!”

“O-, Oohhh. If he’s down in one strike, I guess that makes it another Critical Hit, huh. Huhu, it looks like I’m actually a genius at this game. Truly the Akagin of the Fantasy World.”

Mn. The sounds coming from the room are almost like a comedy skit.

Considering Tilea-san’s words so far… T-, Tilea-san, are you actually getting Critical Hits?

Could it be that rather than elemental affinities, it’s just raw arm strength…?

Ahh, I’m supposed to be happy, I guess, but… Still, what an extraordinary person she is.

“I-, It can’t be. The elites of our Wisdom Unit are suffering consecutive defeats…?”

“What’s wrong? Who’s my next opponent? Hey, find me a guy who was three times smarter than the last guy.”

“Kuh-! Getting ahead of yourself… I-, I shall be next.”

“Fine by me. Come at me. Shall I, the second coming of Akagin, find a worthy opponent in you?”

Responding to Tilea-san’s provocations, another challenger entered the Field(Battleground).

“Next is my turn. TORYAAAA!”

“Fool, I already know you are using wood. My defence is――GUHAH-!”

…After that, a number of demons entered the room to challenge her, but all of them ended the same way as their predecessors.

“I-, Impossible. For the prided elites of our Wisdom Unit to… And of all things, consecutive losses…”

“Five Critical Hits in a row is unbelievable! T-, This must be trickery. YOU! I bet you’re cheating!”

The demons, finally losing their patience, began pressing Tilea-san for answers. And if my guess was correct, just as the demons were claiming, Tilea-san was as good as cheating.

“Now where is this coming from…? You know, in my world, we have a saying. Cheating isn’t cheating if nobody can prove it! If you’re going to accuse me of cheating, then show me your proof. But well, this time I’m really not cheating, though. It’s simply the difference in our ability.”

“I-, It can’t be. Kuh-! Is this true?”

“W-, What cunning words…”

Their faces were warped in disgrace.

“Huhu, your backs are dirty with soot!”

Aahh, geez. And now Tilea-san is getting as carried away as physically possible. She defeated five of these proud demons in a row, so she was incredibly merry now.

This is bad. This pattern again? My stomach is starting to hurt. And demons, please don’t let Tilea-san get so ahead of herself.

“O-, Oohhh. If he’s down in one strike, I guess that makes it another Critical Hit, huh. Huhu, it looks like I’m a genius at this game. Truly the Fantasy World’s Akagin.”
Obviously a reference to Akagi.

“Your backs are dirty with soot!” is a famous quote said by the protagonist of Naki no Ryuu, usually after winning in some ridiculous/incredible way.
As for what it means, even most Japanese have no idea, so don’t ask me, LOL.
The best guess would be that the opponent is so easily read (i.e. they’re so easy to see through that physical body transparent) that the protagonist can see the soot on their backs.
As for why it’s soot, that part remains a mystery.
But then allegedly the manga is filled with nonsensical phrases, so let’s not think about it too much, and focus instead on how ridiculous Tilea is.

Kisshouin Takateru

My sister has been acting weird.

The other day she went out somewhere, but the moment she came home she stuck to me.
My sister always fawns on me, but that night was different.
Because she’d been clinging to my arm with her face buried, I couldn’t see her expression. Still, I could tell that she was down.
After a while, my clothes felt cold.
She was crying.
I wanted to find out what happened exactly, but my sister can be surprisingly stubborn.
So I pretended that I didn’t notice, and just lent her my arm.

I’d been busier lately, so I didn’t get home as early. Because of that, we had less time together.
Even though it was something sad enough to cry about, my sister wouldn’t speak.
Maybe she’d been lonely.
So I decided at that moment that it might be better to make the time to come home a little earlier.
My arm started feeling heavier, and when I turned to look, I found that she had cried herself to sleep.
I would have felt bad waking her up, so I went to get a blanket for her, but when I draped it over, her stomach grumbled. She was chewing in her sleep too.
…Apparently she was hungry.
So I went to prepare food, so that she could eat the moment she woke.

*imouto*

*imouto*

Since that day, for some reason my sister has been really lecturing our father.
She casually whispers things in his ears like, “The Heavens see through all” or “Bad news travels quickly” or “Heaven knows, Earth knows, you know and I know”.
Well, to be honest, my sister has always treated him like this, and she’ll say stuff like this on occasion, like she suddenly remembers to.
But its frequency has been increasing.
Even though she says “Otousama. I believe in you, Otousama.” with a serious expression, it seems like she doesn’t at all.
And being a father who isn’t trusted at all by his daughter, naturally he feels down.
She even came up to me and said, “You’re the only one I can rely on, Oniisama. Please rehabilitate Otousama for me.”

Little Sister… Our father is right behind you…

Apparently in my sister’s mind, our father is an unbelievable villain.
I heard him mutter “I wonder if it’s her rebellious phase…”
…How pitiful.

*imouto*

*imouto*

But lately, her weird behaviour has taken another strange turn.

She sighs a whole lot, and will suddenly grasp at her chest in pain.
A disease!? A spasm!? Or so I thought as I ran over in panic, but she just said something weird like “This is a maiden’s affliction.”
I was still worried about whether it actually was some disease, but at dinner she was eating happily as usual, so I figured that she was alright.
As for my father, in order to raise her opinion of him, lately he’s been diligently buying all sorts of rare pastries and cakes and fruits for her. And she’s been dilligently eating them all.
Well, I’m glad that she’s healthy.

*imouto*

*imouto*

This one time, she whole-heartedly plucked petals. She would pluck at them, and sigh, then pluck at them and sigh again.
Only after a number of flowers were left bald did she stop, after one final, big sigh.
Then after that, she silently cleaned up the pitiful remains of the flowers.
Had she simply been really stressed?

*imouto*

*imouto*

Most recently, it happened while my sister was doing homework. One of her answers were wrong, so to rub it out, I picked up the rubber from her pencil case. And then she screamed “AAAAHHH!” like it was the end of the world.
After snatching it in panic from my hand, my sister dropped her shoulders in gloom.
Just what was going on with that rubber?

“Oniisama, you’re too much…”

After leaving behind those mysterious words, my sister picked up all her things and left my room.
What the?
And Little Sister, are you fine with leaving that answer wrong?

*imouto*

*imouto*

“Wasn’t that flower fortune telling?”

I spoke to my friend Imari about her.
She consulted him about something quite passionately, when he came over to play the other day.
Even when I asked her what it was about, she just replied “Nothing at all”, and wouldn’t reply to me.
…No fun at all.

“Flower fortune telling?”

“What, you’ve never heard of it? It’s pretty common, isn’t it? That thing where they go, ‘He loves me. He loves me not.’ as they pick at petals and stuff. Don’t you remember the girls doing it, back when we were kids?”

“Aahh, I think I did hear something like that.”

Flower fortune telling, huh.
Seeing my sister rend petals with ghastly vigour, that kind of maidenly idea never came to mind.
Rather, I had wondered if she had some sort of grudge against them.

But flower fortune telling, huh.
Wasn’t that a love fortune?
Love?

“…Imari. What did my sister talk to you about?”

“Eehh, well, nothing big…”

“Imari.”

“Ehh~ I mean, I already made a promise with Imouto-chan, so…”

“Imari.”

“Come on, Takateru, even you have heaps of stuff your sister doesn’t know, right? GUHOH-!”

Silence, fool.

As warning, I gave him a second punch.
Even though he started coughing and spluttering, he still wouldn’t talk.

I sighed.

“Professor Kumesuke’s wife. At the Academic Meeting”

“UGEH-! How did you know about that-!?”

“What did my sister talk to you about?”

“…It’s what you suspect.”

Hm.

“Who is it?”

“I don’t know. I tried asking, but she wouldn’t tell me. Ah-, but she did say something about Romeo.”

“Romeo?”

Are we still talking about a real person here?
Could it be that my sister has an imaginary boyfriend? Considering who we’re talking about, it’s certainly possible.
Perhaps my sister has a foreign boyfriend that only she can see.

“Also she started talking about giving handmade cookies as a present, so I told her it would better not to.”

“Cookies?”

Ah-! I remember!
Just a while ago, my sister made my father and I eat cookies.
Because of my mother’s diet, she doesn’t eat sweet things at night.
The cookies were burnt bitter here and there, but the rest of them were sweet, so perhaps you could say that my sister’s cooking was slowly approaching the average person’s.
The cookies on my father’s plate were far more burnt than mine.
He asked, “Oh, were these choc chip cookies?” causing my sister to grow sullen.
Dad, those cookies might be pitch black, but there’s no chocolate in them at all. They’re plain cookies.
My father wordlessly washed them down with his tea.

“So it was that huh.”

“Oh! Do you know something?”

“I guess.”

In order to give cookies to the person you like, you used me as a lab rat, huh.
Burnt foods are bad for you, you know.
Know our father’s grief.

“Well? What are you going to do?”

“Nothing at all, of course.”

“Oh? I thought you’d try and stop it.”

“As if.”

Well, I will check to see that he isn’t a weirdo though.
If somebody was tricking a lady of the Kisshouin house, and planning to do bad things to her, I’d be troubled.
As long as that isn’t the case, I’m fine with anything.

“After all…”

I can’t even imagine that absurd little sister actually succeeding in her romance.
To begin with, I’m not even sure he’s real.
Hmm, she mentioned before that she wanted to see the zoo in Hokkaido. Once it’s done, I’ll take her there.

But Little Sister, if you really have fallen in love, maybe you should hold back on our father’s tributes.
After all, your face is getting a little round.

“The Heavens see through all” or “Bad news travels quickly” or “Heaven knows, Earth knows, you know and I know”.
All of these are Japanese sayings.

The first(天網恢恢疎にして漏らさず) is literally,
“Heaven has large meshes, but nothing escapes.”
and comes from Lao Zi’s
天網恢恢,疏而不失」.

The second(悪事千里を走る) is literally,
“News of misdeeds spread across a thousand li.”
and comes from the Beimeng Suoyan’s
Good deeds do not go beyond the door, evil deeds spread a thousand miles” or in Chinese,
好事不出門,壞事傳千里」.

The third(天知る、地知る、我知る、人知る) is literally,
“The Heavens know, the Earth knows, I know, and you know.”
actually comes from a quote from an Eastern Han official by the name of Yang Zhen楊震).
When a man named Wang Mi visited Yang Zhen at night and attempted to bribe him 10 catties of gold, Yang rejected the gift. Wang Mi persevered, saying that nobody would know.
Yang Zhen famously retorted “Heaven knows it, God knows it, I know it, and you know it. How can you say that no one knows it?” or in Chinese,
「天知,神知,我知,子知。何謂無知!」
shaming Wang Mi into leaving.

For some reason as I was translating this chapter, I kept thinking of midoriha…

It was our job to get a list of names and club affiliations in order to bring to the Student Council.
We had our classmates fill out the forms, but just when I was about to head to the Student Council room to deliver it, Class Pres suddenly suggested,

“Why don’t I go alone?”

“Why ever would you do that?”

“Eh-, I mean, look, people say that the Pivoine and Student Council don’t really get along… And you are technically a Pivoine member.”

What is ‘technically’ supposed to mean? How rude.

“There is no issue. More importantly, it was implied that this task is to be taken as a way to introduce ourselves to the Student Council, and I shall thus be accompanying you. We will be leaving right after, at any rate.”

“I’m fine if you are, but…”

“Then let us tarry no longer. The sooner we complete this task, the sooner we can head home.”

After waving the papers in my hand to urge Class Rep to hurry, we headed to the StuCo together.

*imouto*

It’s my first time coming here.
There aren’t any 1st years in the Student Council, so we’re rarely familiar with them at all.
After knocking on the door and stating our purpose, we were given permission to enter.

“Please excuse me.”

Inside the room were desks, shelves and lockers, as well as a sofa and table in the middle. Quite a simple room compared to the Pivoine salon.
But well, if you use the Pivoine as your standard, then most everything in the world would feel simple.
The room had a really meritocratic feel. Even so, being a room in Zui’ran, the furnishings were of high quality.
After the two of us introduced ourselves, we stated our purpose once more.

“Ah, the club registrar. It goes in the box over there.”

I followed the senpai’s instructions and placed it in the box.
…Well that was quick.
Just as I was about to excuse myself, the door suddenly opened with a bang.

“Oi! I’m back with food, so let’s eat! To be honest I nicked it from the Pivoine though!”

My heart skipped a beat.

“President! This girl is a Pivoine!”

“Eh-”

The newcomer’s eyes focused on me.
A powerful and piercing gaze, a daring smile, and a presence like the sun.
The moment I saw him, it felt like a grand orchestra played in my mind.
A throbbing melody in my heart.
This person is almost like Orff’s O Fortuna!

“Why is there a Pivoine girl here?”

What do I do? I can’t look away.
My heart is pounding. What do I do, it’s pounding!

“Oooi.”

*imouto*

Oh no! I think I might have fallen in love!

*imouto*

*imouto*

After that, I somehow managed to pull myself together and smooth things over.
Thankfully, the upperclassmen in the room had conveniently taken my pause to be shock from “I nicked it from the Pivoine”.
The President simply said, “Geez. Let’s keep this a secret from the rest of the Pivoine, okay?” with a dazzling smile.
I swore in my heart that I would die before I talked.

*imouto*

The person who made the dramatic entrance against the backdrop of O Fortuna, turned out to be a third year in middle school, Student Council President Tomoe Senju-senpai.
That’s all I know for now.
But even that much is plenty.
Since then, Senpai’s theme song has been playing endlessly in my head.
Uu-, my heart hurts each time I think of Senju-senpai’s face!

But that smile was so cool…

“Let’s keep this a secret from the rest of the Pivoine, okay?”

UHYAAAAAAAAAA~!!

I rolled around and around in bed.
By the time I got up, I was completely dizzy.

*imouto*

But still, what do I do from now on?
We’re in different grades. I’m not even a StuCo member so I have no point of contact.
And what’s more, he’s the President of the organisation that’s been at odds with the Pivoine for years.
There’s no chance of getting close at all.
If only Senpai wasn’t the StuCo President at least!

Mn?
…Isn’t this kind of, Romeo and Juliet-ish?
UKYAAAAAA~~! If Senju-senpai is Romeo, then that makes me Juliet!
Romeo, doff thy name!

…Let’s calm down.
I’m part of the Pivoine, so I can’t enter the Student Council. To begin with, he’d have graduated middle school by the time I entered. There’s no point in doing it.
…Senpai is graduating. Romeo-senpai is graduating! Romeo-senpai is…!

…Calm down, me.
To begin with, let’s have him remember my name and face.
Ah-, today he went to get food, so maybe he gets hungry after school.
What if I made him handmade cookies?

“It’s delicious. You’re talented as expected, Juliet.”

“Oh goodness, Romeo-senpai…”

If I got told something like that, what would I do!? What!?
Okay! Cookies it is!

All that’s left is…
I pulled out a new rubber from my drawers.

Um, you know, it’s not like I actually really believe in this stuff, you know?
But I mean, like, when I was a middle schooler in my past life, for a while I was really into this.
It’s just this charm that goes, “If you write the name of your beloved on a new rubber, as long as nobody else touches it before it runs out, your love will be requited”.
Like, I reallyyy don’t actually believe it, you know? But like, I mean, I may as well, so I’m just going to try a bit. You know?
I pulled off the case, and wrote in small red letters,

“Tomoe Senju”

Putting the case back on, I prayed to Rubber-sama.
Please, God! Grant me a chance!

*imouto*

*imouto*

Using my head makes me hungry. It’s already time for dinner.
Lately Oniisama has been coming home early. Today he was home in time to eat dinner with us.
Eating together with family really does make things yummier.
Aahh, but my heart is so full that I might not be able to eat…
I’m being tormented by an affliction of the heart.
Oh my! Beef cheek simmered in red wine is my favourite!

Each time our eyes meet, Oniisama smiles at me kindly.
Hmmm.
If Romeo-senpai’s character theme is Orff’s O Fortuna, then Oniisama’s character theme is Ravel’s Bolero I guess.
Then Aira-sama’s is Liszt’s La Campanella while Yurie-sama’s is Schubert’s Ave Maria.
Enjou is Satie’s Gnossiennes, while Imari-sama is… Hm, maybe In a Persian Market.

Which means Kaburagi is Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain.

*imouto*

*imouto*

A few days later, Mr. In a Persian Market, Imari-sama, came over to play, so I secretly went to consult him.

“Eh-! Reika-chan, there’s a guy you like!?”

“Please remember to keep this a secret from Oniisama.”

“…Ahhh, yeah.”

Without telling him exactly who it was, I asked him for a way to get closer.
Unfortunately I didn’t get any good advice from him.
But he did tell me that handmade cookies were a bit intense to get from somebody you barely knew, so I followed his advice and stopped it.
It’s true that handmade Valentines chocolates aren’t really favoured at Zui’ran, so maybe cookies get the same treatment.
But geez. I even went out of the way to practice. Tsk.

*imouto*

Ah-, but since falling in love, I’ve been having fun every day!

This guy’s videos are so interesting.

I think you should watch some of them before you read this chapter!

I know. I think I’ll die.

The idea came to mind while Cornou was brushing his teeth after dinner.

It had been ten years since he became King. The whole time, he had hid his true self, and tried his best to wear the mask of a splendid ruler.
The nation had been struggling through a famine when he succeeded the throne.
When he did, he began to lower the taxes.
Cultivating the lands, endeavours with flood control, preparing for irrigation, adjusting and fixing laws… Seven years of wrestling with problems facing the nation until it could finally yield tax again. Even now, he was struggling with supporting education.

The nation finally saw the light of day.
The citizens sang praise of him. Lately, even people from the neighbouring countries praised him as a wise king.

More! Praise me more!

That had been his reaction until just three days ago.
But now, even praise seemed irritating.

To be honest, Cornou actually hated trouble. No, not just trouble either. Things that hurt, things that were difficult, things that were sad. Having to try hard, having to endure, having to work. Having to leave bed, having to concentrate, having to train. All these things he loathed. He even loathed to ride on the ooma when he toured the country by air, and he found that speaking to people was tiring as well.
If he could, he would prefer to hole up in his room and devote himself to his hobbies.

A man like him had faced the sly geezer politicians in nauseating battles of wit and otherwise. He had spent an entire ten years reforming the country. And the reason was very simply so that the woman he loved would look at him.

Even now, he recalled that day fifteen years ago when the two first met.
At the time, Cornou had just turned thirteen, and she had only been five.
The girl had climbed a tree without thinking, and was at wits end because she couldn’t descend.
With fiery bright red hair, and bright blue eyes like a lake, her striking features made quite an impression.

At the time she had been an energetic child, befitting of her hair colour, and was the complete opposite of the intelligent but reclusive Cornou.
Their two fathers joked that if only they could split Cornou’s wisdom and the girl’s energy between them, they would be perfect.

He would see her once every few years, and with each time she would grow more beautiful, remaining lively as ever, and as time passed by his feelings towards her changed as well.
From a rash and noisy child, to a girl he considered his sister. And then from that little sister, to the girl he was in love with.

He wanted to match her.
He wanted to be worthy of her.
He wanted to improve the country, so that he could bring her here with pride.

With that in mind, Cornou put in his most hated ‘effort’, and hiding his real self, he played the perfect king.
Before long, his efforts yielded dividends, and when Hitow turned sixteen, he sent a marriage proposal, which her father, King of Sunayu, accepted with pleasure.
King Sunayu had wanted to marry them right that instant, but it was Cornou himself who asked to wait.

Hitow had been growing more beautiful by the day, and in fear of having her taken, Cornou had sent a proposal. Even so, his nation was not yet fit for her.

In the four years until their marriage, he would restore and develop his nation further.
When he imagined the life they would be living together, his steps became light, and even going outdoors turned from Hell to paradise. The shitty beard-geezers that would do nothing except complain even turned into stupid but adorable children to him.
And then finally, finally, when everything was ready to receive her…

‘I would like to postpone our marriage. Having said that, you are already at the right age to marry. I am sure that you are in a rush to leave a successor. It would go against my good conscience to delay the birth of your heir due to circumstances within my own nation. If you desire to annul our engagement, that is also fine.’

When he had sent a message to inform her that the day of their marriage was arriving, the reply that he received caused the blood to drain from his face. Or rather, so much blood left his head that he fainted.
The letter said that she wished to postpone things, and yet she gave no reason. In other words, she simply wanted to annul their engagement.

What he did, what he ate, how he spent the last three days, he honestly had no memory of.
For three days he had been a shell, and only just now as he brushed his teeth, did his senses return to him.

Suddenly, nothing seemed to matter any more.
Going out was now nothing but a pain, and the bearded geezers were now scary again.

He was sick of it.
He was sick of all of it.
He was sick of giving his all and enduring everything.

A west wind began to blow. The decades of calm were over. The breeze had finally turned into a storm, and Cornou felt, no, he knew, that a maelstrom was coming.
He didn’t think he would be able to weather the tempest without Princess Hitow.
So he decided he would disappear before the tempest ever came.

Cornou prepared a study rope.

After tugging it a few times to test its strength, he tossed it over a beam, and created a noose.
Standing atop a chair, he placed his neck through its ring.
All he had to do was kick the chair away, and all would be well. He would be free from all troubles.

Cornou closed his eyes.

“What are you doing!” rang a deep voice.

It belonged to a man who knew Cornou’s true self; Baz, his trusted retainer.
Baz was the only person permitted to enter Cornou’s quarters.
Just why was he here? Cornou had clearly told him that he needed to think, and that he wanted to be alone.

“Please stop this! You must stop this, please!”

Cornou didn’t turn to face him.
He didn’t want to end his own life before his friend, but at the same time, doing so would free Baz from this troublesome lord of his.
As small children, Baz would secretly eat his carrots for him. He would help clean up the bedwetting that continued until Cornou was ten. After Cornou became King, he would patiently wake up the lord that hated early mornings, and when Cornou made decisions that he personally hated, Baz would listen to his complaints until deep into the night.

Farewell, Baz. Please live for yourself, from now on.

Cornou took a deep breath,

-clang-

when suddenly a shining rectangle of light appeared with a clatter.

Cornou caught his breath.

It was a bright-lit rectangular space, that seemed to suspend in mid-air. And inside it, a woman. Her black, wet hair clung to her face, and eyes darker than the deepest night beheld him.

“Hii-!”

A small shriek escaped his throat.

“What horrid tye’ming,” groaned the low voice of the woman.

There was white froth all over her hair and her bare shoulders.

The moment he saw this, Cornou knew who she was. She was a woman who had crawled out from the land of the dead, deep beneath the earth. She was a spectre. And judging by the foam, she had come from the Froth Marsh Hell, where sinners drowned for eternity.

Suicide was forbidden. It was said that those who ended their own lives would never rejoin the circle of life, doomed to imprisonment in the depths of the earth. Cornou had always considered it a dated and ridiculous superstition, but now he loathed himself for his stupidity.

“I’m going to put on my Barth Rohb, so just stay there. Listen, okay? You absolutely can’t move from there!”

In other words, “You’d better not run from me.”

This spectre was here to drag him into the abyss.
His knees went weak, and then the strength left his legs. His teeth wouldn’t stay clamped, and clattered despite himself.
That trembling reached his whole body――――and so he lost balance.
The chair began to tilt, and the noose bit into his throat.

“King!”

He had forgotten about Baz due to the terror.

“Aahhh! I told you! I told you not to move! Aahh, geeezz, how am I supposed to dress myself while you’re like that! Umm, ummm, WHAT DO I DO!? AH-, I KNOW!”

The woman slithered through the entrance to the underworld.
Her hands grasped large scissors, the length of her upper arm.

“HIIIIIIII!”

Cornou tried desperately to right the chair. But his trembling legs wouldn’t listen to him, and the noose only tightened.

-pechan-

-pechan-

Water dripped from the woman as she approached.

Foam dripped from her hair and bare body,  sullying the floor beneath her.

The scissors glinted in the light.

Cornou was about to wet himself.

The drenched arms found their way to Cornou’s legs.

It was over.

Cornou had found it scary when the geezers shouted. But they were nothing compared to the horror of this spectral woman.

He would have continued living even if it led to Princess Hitow’s rejection, had he known things would end up like this.

Cornou felt tears gathering in his eyes.

The woman placed a leg onto the slanted chair, and leapt up towards him.

The leg of the righted chair slammed noisily against the ground.

“GAHAH-!”

For a moment, the noose loosened, and air surged through his throat.

The woman climbed up, almost clinging to Cornou’s skin, as she raised the scissors in her hands.

It was impossible to even scream.

Cornou found himself frozen to the very core.

The honey-coloured body was pressed against him, its figure slender enough that he could have easily thrust her away. But despite that, he couldn’t muster the slightest resistance.

The blades now pointed above his head.

-snip-

Just as he registered the sound, the rope fell from above him. Having lost its support, Cornou fell from the chair.
Because he covered it at once, there was no injury to his head.
Still, his body had slammed against the floor.
The pain caused him to grimace as he began to sit up, when suddenly something soft fell from above.

“Owowow….”

It was the spectre woman.

“Ah-…”

By reflex he had supported her with his arm, but the sensation transmitted to his skin was surprisingly smooth.

Cornou flushed red.

It was saddening that for even a moment, a spectre had made him feel this way. More important still, was the fact that he had long pledged himself to Princess Hitow.

He pushed the soft body away from him.

And when he did, the woman blinked, and then…

“GYAAAAAAAAAH!”

Screamed.

“C-, CLOTHES! CLOTHES!”

The woman paled as she looked down at her body.

She’s a spectre, but she’s still a woman I guess, thought Cornou in a daze.

As he sat there vacantly, he saw her standing up in the corner of his gaze, before returning to the gate to the underworld.

But after only two, three steps, she turned on her heels, and returned to Cornou’s side.
Placing her hands on the noose around his neck, she glared at him resentfully and said,

“I’m confiscating this! I don’t know what happened, but you’re still young, so how about trying for a little longer?”

Still seated on the floor, Cornou simply nodded.
He had no idea why, but apparently she had given up on taking him to the underworld.
The woman ran across the wet floor, before jumping back into the rectangular door.
With the robe held by her chest, the now bright-red woman spoke to Cornou.

“This will not happen again, understood! This is too much for my emotions, so you’re going to have to help yourself.”

Again, Cornou nodded.

With a clatter, the door disappeared.

Cornou slowly closed his eyes, and then opened them.

Grey-white walls, and a window built into them. Through the window, verdant leaves rustling in the wind.

Things were back to normal.

The spectre had gone.

Cornou looked around the familiar room.

There was a saying that went, ‘once on shore, pray no more’.

Perhaps he might normally forget the terror, and wonder if it was all a dream, but the sharp blades of the large scissors seemed to caution him from the side, and neither had the froth disappeared from the floor.

Speaking of which…

Cornou turned around, and found Baz slumped against the wall in front of the doorway. Apparently his legs had given way. He was sitting there staring in the direction of the now-gone spectre, forgetting to even blink.

“Didn’t you need something?” asked Cornou.

“Y-, Yes. Right. That’s right.”

Still looking dazed, Baz turned to face Cornou.

“Princess Hitow is here.”

Cornou doubted his ears.

Although they had known each other for a long time, when royalty visited each other, they would always send a messenger, days in advance.
But this rashness was quite like her.
Without knowing, the corners of his lips rose into a smile.
She was probably here about the wedding.

Cornou stood up.
He lightly struck his clothes to straighten them out.

Perhaps Princess Hitow was here to cancel the engagement. If that was the case, perhaps she would spit harsh words of rejection at him. But mysteriously, he didn’t think of running.

If there was something about him she didn’t like, then all he had to do was correct it.
If the problem was actually on her side, then all they had to do was work together to fix it.
As long as she was there, effort, endurance, he would give it his all.
Once he imagined meeting that dreadful spectre again, it felt like there was nothing he couldn’t do.

Heading to the doorway, he held out his arm to Baz.
After he pulled him up, he saw Baz’s mouth wrinkle into a smile.

“I’m sure it’s good news.”

Mould.

At this rate it would definitely mould.

Looking at the blue mantle hanging from the line, Izumi’s features curved into a frown.

The mantle given to her by the man lost in the desert――――in other words, by King Huuron――――was thicker than expected.
But the desert was hot in the daytime, and freezing in the night. Perhaps something like this was to be expected.

At any rate, the mantle was certainly thick. Had that been the only thing, then Izumi wouldn’t have worried.
Embroidery decorated it in the same colour as its cloth, and its craftsmanship was clearly finer than anything she had ever seen.
It spoke much that the first thing she thought was ‘looks expensive’.

Up until now she had received two bottles of the finest liquor, three balls of hahanero bags, and then even a map, so surely it was no big deal to receive a mantle that was just a little fancy…?
Izumi didn’t think so at all.
The mantle was simply that splendid.
Perhaps she would meet a poor person next.
Selling it would probably net a fortune. But it was still technically the mantle of Yohk’Zai’s king. Perhaps selling it would garner unwanted attention.
And thus she concluded that it was still best to simply return it.

However, this was not the same as wanting to meet him herself. The reason she didn’t mind people seeing her naked is because she had been sure that she would never meet them again. Now that she knew that wasn’t an absolute, she started to care a little more about her appearance.

Izumi glanced at the vinyl bag in the corner. Her newly purchased bathrobe lay inside.
This time she would be prepared no matter when her window might connect to a strange world.
Perhaps she would be able to relax more this time.

Which left the current problem. While safely blow-drying the mantle from a distance, she wracked her brains wondering how she could return this to King Huuron.

The hot air continued to leave the dryer.

Suddenly, the cry of “Fire!” overlapped the sound of the machine.
Did the shout come from this world, or did it come from the mysterious world beyond her windowsill? The quickest way to determine it was simply to open her window.
Turning off the drier, she ducked past the mantle on the line and then opened the window.
And it was connected to the inside of some house she didn’t know.

Ochre dirt walls. A kitchen seemingly carved from stone. Warm furniture made of wood. And finally, two people in white-coloured clothing.
The two of them hadn’t noticed Izumi’s presence yet, and were looking outside through the opened wooden window.
And outside the window, beyond a gap of about a metre, was the window of a house placed diagonally from theirs.

Izumi closely examined the two of them. Their bare arms were of brownish hue, and it brought to mind a desert people. But their clothing was completely different. White clothing that resembled an ancient kantoui or tunic, tied with a white belt that lustred like silk. Both tunics went beyond the buttocks, and whilst one was like a long skirt that reached the ankles, the other had a shorter skirt that reached just below the knees.
From the silhouettes, Izumi could tell that the knee-length tunic was worn by a man, whilst the ankle-length by a woman.

“W-, What should we do, Kyousui-san? There might still be children left behind! Aahh, why isn’t anybody going to save them? Should I go bring water?”

“It’s pointless. With motor skills like yours, there’ll just be one extra person to save. The soldiers will be here soon.”

“Well that might be true, but still…”

The man glanced at face of the woman next to him. From what Izumi could see, he had friendly looking eyes that slanted outwards, and particularly striking were his shining red earrings.
When Kyousui, the woman, looked back towards him, she noticed Izumi.
Her eyes widened so far that they were in danger of falling out of her head.

“Eh? EHH? UMM… EHH!?”

She pointed at Izumi as she visibly struggled for words. Because of this, the man noticed Izumi as well.

“Hello. Umm, you might not believe me but, I’m nobody suspicious. By the by, might you be having trouble of some sort?”

First was greeting them.

“Oh, well thank you for introducing yourself,” said the man as he bowed. It was a standard response, but it seemed to Izumi that he was simply numb from shock.

After raising his head, the man ran over to Izumi’s side.

“The truth is, we’re terribly troubled, Lady Magician!”

Izumi didn’t comment. Her experience suggested that correcting him was pointless.

“The house beyond this alleyway is on fire, but there might still be small children in there! Please lend us your aid!”

Izumi was troubled. The man’s response was so intense that he might prostrate himself at any moment.

“Ummmm.”

She turned back to check her bathroom.
The only thing that looked to be of use was the swaying mantle before her eyes.
Izumi snatched it. The clothes peg fell to the ground.
She turned the knob of her shower and held the mantle beneath the water.

“Perhaps you could cover yourself with this and save them yourself. Don’t try the impossible though.”

Izumi forced the words, “Because you look kinda slow.” back down her throat.

“Oohh, how reliable. If this is Lady Magician’s cloth then there will surely be no problem.”

It’s just a normal, fancy cloth though…

Izumi couldn’t help but feel incredibly nervous.

“Dear, wait a moment!”

Kyousui tried to stop the man, but he had already donned the mantle and was on the verge of jumping through the window. He tried to make a gallant jump through the window, but his raised leg got caught on the mantle, and he fell through the window instead.
Izumi could hear the dull noise from the impact.

“I told you that it was impossible for you!” shouted Kyousui as she leaned through the window.

It was at that moment that Izumi spotted bright red hair fluttering beyond her.

“I’ll be borrowing this cloth!”

A voice reached her ears. It was calm, and low, but unmistakably a woman’s.

Who exactly, Izumi couldn’t see, but apparently somebody had torn the mantle off the man.
As the man floundered outside however, Izumi occasionally spotted the somebody’s bright red head beyond the windowsill.

Now fully wrapped in the cloth, a woman stood up outside.
The fiery red hair that reached her hips was tied into a high ponytail.
Her white skin was tanned slightly olive, while her sharp brows, straight nose, and clear blue eyes painted the image of a strong-willed woman. Said eyes were currently turned towards Izumi.
The moment she saw her, the woman looked astonished for a moment, but she immediately regained her composure.
Clad in Huuron’s mantle, she dashed off without hesitation.
It didn’t take long for her to disappear down the alley.

“Owowow…” muttered the man, as he stood up, rubbing his hips.

From far outside, Izumi could hear a crowd falter between horrified screams, and cheers of joy.
Black smoke rose from the neighbouring house as the flame audibly crackled.

“Dear, hurry inside!” screamed Kyousui.

Her shout had brought Izumi back to her senses.
She rushed out of her bathroom and grabbed every bucket and pail she could find, and when she ran out, she went for the vases as well.
When she returned to the bathroom, Kyousui was just on the verge of dragging the man back herself.

“We’re going to do a bucket relay,” Izumi declared to her.

“Eh?”

Kyousui turned around.
Without delay, Izumi forced a bucket of water into her hands.

“Come on! Hurry up! Hand it to the man outside!”

After glancing at the bucket, and then at Izumi, Kyousui gave a strong nod before making for the window.

“Dear! It’s water! Come on, hurry!” she shouted.

The man had been standing there dazedly, but Kyousui’s voice sent his head snapping back towards her.
Receiving the bucket, he splashed the water through a burning window. By the time he had finished, Kyousui was ready with the second bucket. One after another, Izumi handed the filled containers to Kyousui, and one after another, Kyousui handed them to the man. When the man had emptied each one, he would exchange it for the one in Kyousui’s arms, before turning back to toss the water through the window. For a stopgap measure, it was rather well-done.

Just as sweat was beginning to form on their brows, a gust of wind came from beyond that window.
Earlier, the red-head had charged in with the mantle on her person. That same woman was now jumping out of the window, carrying something wrapped in that mantle.

Gently placing the bundle onto the ground, she unfurled the blue cloth, and from inside appeared a boy of four or five. His teary, bloodshot eyes looked around uneasily. Although he tried to clench his lips tight, it was heart-rending that sobs still escaped them. However, he wasn’t injured, and there wasn’t a single burn mark on him.

“Mister! I’ll leave this boy to you. And Miss, I’m sorry about this, but could you hide me? The soldiers are starting to gather, and I have a reason that I don’t want to be seen.”

Right after she finished speaking, the woman handed the child to the man, and then entered the house through the window. Naturally she didn’t catch her foot on anything.
Kyousui showed her agreement by reaching for the window shutters.

“Dear, I’m leaving this to you.”

“Hm? UMM, EHH!? AH-, WAIT, KYOUSUI-SAAAN!”

The man’s voice disappeared as the window closed.
Kyousui wrung a wet cloth to give to the sooty woman.
She accepted it with thanks, and began wiping her cheeks and arms down.
Looking closely, it was now obvious that the ends of her hair and part of her sash were burnt black, and the back of her right hand had turned red.

“Come here,” beckoned Izumi. “We’ll cool your hand with running water.”

Although the woman tilted her head in confusion, she came over nonetheless.

Turning on a cold shower, Izumi took the woman’s hand to hold beneath it.

“Sorry for the trouble,” said the woman, as she left her arm to Izumi.

It was at this point that the woman noticed the mantle in her other hand and caught her breath.

“Looking carefully, isn’t the embroidery on this cloak amazing!? It’s my first time seeing such a beautiful and detailed design.”

After sighing in admiration, the woman spoke apologetically to Kyousui.

“I’m sorry, Miss. I don’t think I can reimburse you with something like this, but I’ll try my best to repay you.”

“No, that doesn’t belong to us. It’s actually Lady Magician’s.”

“Magician?”

Now subjected to two stares, Izumi shook her head.

“No, well, that isn’t exactly mine but… Well, it did save the life of a child, so I guess its original owner wouldn’t complain.”

“Truly? How magnanimous,” she replied, before staring at the mantle.

Its edges were charred black, and the rest of it was soiled with sooty water. Its intricate patterns now frayed, and it looked beyond repair.

On the other hand, the sash wrapped around her waist lustred splendidly, its gradated dye-job reminiscent of the morning sky.

In Izumi’s eyes, it too, was quite the work of art.

No, actually, it’s not the sash that’s the real pity here…

“It looks like the ends of your hair are singed.”

The waist-length hair was as red as red could be, and it was obvious to anyone’s eyes that it had been carefully tended to.
Both the embroidered mantle and the sash had been a shame, but as a fellow woman, it was the woman’s hair that pained Izumi’s heart the most.

“It’ll grow back in no time,” smiled the woman. Though the smile had been a casual one, it was charming like the blooming of a gorgeous flower.

“Now then, please help yourselves,” announced Kyousui with food and drink. “I’m not sure if it will suit your tastes, but please go ahead.”

“Aye, thank you. To tell the truth, I haven’t eaten since this morning,” said the woman. She promptly put down the mantle, and brought drink to her mouth. Without delay, her hand continued on towards the pita-like flatbread with the green paste inside.

“Lady Magician, please help yourself as well. It’s naan with zora bean.”

“Thanks.”

Izumi took some naan without reserve.
The surrounding bread was roast crisp, whilst the green paste inside had a texture not unlike roughly-ground red-bean paste. Although it could do with just a little more salt, it had a gentle and light taste to it.

“How delicious,” muttered the redhead.

Izumi agreed. But for some reason the woman had sighed sadly.
When she raised her head, she found Kyousui frowning towards the woman.

“Umm, could it be that you are Princess Hitow?”

“EH-!?”

Izumi’s gaze returned to the redhead.
The redhead nodded with a complicated expression.

“Quite so. I am Hitow.”

“A PRINCESS!?”

“Shh! You’re being loud.”

When Izumi accidentally raised her voice, Hitow placed a finger against Izumi’s lips.

Ohh! So they have the same gesture in this world!

It was a little moving.

“Why? Ohhh, is that because you don’t want to be found by your soldiers?”

She now knew why Hitow didn’t want her screaming ‘PRINCESS!’. But as for why she didn’t want to be found, Izumi still had no idea.

“I still don’t get why, though.”

Izumi’s frank question caused the redhead―――Princess Hitow―――to hang her head silently.
Her messy hair concealed her face.
Izumi was sent into a panic.

“Um, I’m really sorry. I asked something personal, but I didn’t mean to pry if you didn’t want to answer.”

Hitow raised her head and shook it.

“No, it’s natural to have questions. Unworthy though I may be, I am still royalty, and it was shameful to make a citizen feel uneasy. My apologies.”

Her bow was so perfect that people might think her OCD, whilst Izumi the recipient was watching on with a stiff expression. To begin with, Izumi wasn’t her citizen, so there was no reason to apologise.
While Izumi was wondering to herself how to explain, Hitow let out a sigh.

“I had a disagreement with some of my officials, you see. I desired some time alone, so I left the palace to cool my head.”

Seeing the look of grief appear on Hitow’s graceful features, Izumi opened her mouth to say something, but closed it soon after.
She realised that Princess Hitow’s skin was flawless, save for the faint bags under her eyes.
The girl looked to be about twenty. It was an age that already came with its own troubles, but coupled with the baggage of royalty and they were sure to be on another scale. How could Izumi possibly give advice to a person like that.
The mood had turned dark like the sky before rainfall.
It was Kyousui who first timidly broke the silence.

“It might be presumptuous of me to ask, but could it be that Your Highness is troubled by the marriage proposal from King Cornou of Tohji?”

Hitou was wide-eyed.
Her cheeks began to lightly blush.

“How, did you…”

“As you can see, I am an immigrant, and when I first arrived in this nation, I was shocked by how close the royalty was to their citizens. Everyone was so warm and frank that you couldn’t feel the walls of social status… Which is why everyone is worried. Even though Your Highness had been so shy and joyful just hearing King Cornou’s name, recently Your Highness’s smiles have all seemed sad.”

The princess buried her face into her knees.

“Everybody noticed all of that? How immature I must be.”

With an overreaction like that, it was possible that absolutely anybody could tell. Izumi stared at Princess Hitow.

“Our meeting was surely some kind of fate, so we’ll hear you out if you want. I think that we can be franker than your advisers.”

“I wouldn’t understand political issues, but from what I humbly see, Your Highness’s situation is different, yes? So rather than white-haired gentlemen, perhaps the two of us would be more suitable,” added Kyousui.

Princess Hitow raised her head.
To say nothing of her cheeks, to say nothing of her ears, Hitow’s entire face flushed bright red like a tomato.

“You’ll listen? It’s pathetic though, so you might be disillusioned.”

“Of course we’ll listen.”

“Yes.”

The two of them nodded reassuringly.
After taking a large breath, Princess Hitow let out a large sigh and slumped her shoulders.

“I can’t eat (it),” she muttered.

“Hah?”

“Eh?”

Their two voices overlapped.
Izumi’s heart pounded for a moment as she wondered if it was a sexual euphemism, but apparently that wasn’t the case.

“Can’t eat, what?” asked Kyousui.

“I can’t eat Tohjian food.”

Thought so.

Izumi was just a little bit disappointed.

“Almost everything in Tohjian cuisine includes coconasso. And I can’t stand that distinct, saccharine flavour it has. Curry, naan, everything made with coconasso…. Each time I visit Tohji I force the stuff down with drink, but two days is my limit. Living in Tohji? Without eating coconasso? It’s so ridiculous that King Cornou would be astounded. So I suggested that we postpone the marriage. At the moment I’m actually in the middle of some special training designed to force myself to get used to it. But it might be impossible for me…”

“That’s, ummm… terrible, maybe…”

It was a little childish to be picky about ones food, but everybody had things they were bad at. If something you hated was in everything you ate, perhaps it really would be tough.
Earlier, Izumi’s mouth had been hanging in disbelief, but after imagining a world where everything included shiitake mushrooms, she suddenly revised her opinion.

“Couldn’t Your Highness ask them to exclude coconasso from your food?” asked Kyousui, before adding, “It might take the cooks a little longer though.”

The Princess shook her head.

Coconasso is special to King Cornou.”

“Special?”

Izumi tilted her head in wonder.

“Indeed. Roughly ten years ago, Tohji was struck by famine. Until then, coconasso had only been eaten in one region of the nation, but given the famine, King Cornou himself spread its use and increased its production. It matures quickly, is strong against disease, and provides splendid nourishment. I heard from citizens of Tohji that many infants were saved thanks to its boons. With its place in the hearts of King Cornou and his citizens, how could I say that I couldn’t eat it. King Cornou will surely come to hate me. He will deride me for being such a selfish princess.”

Hmmmmm.

Izumi crossed her arms in thought.
If they hadn’t eaten it until ten years ago, then it was quite possible to create foods without it. If it was just food that she wasn’t used to, it would probably be fine to refuse it. But now that it was the foodstuffs that saved a nation, refusing it could be taken as extravagance as well. Just how would King Cornou himself take it?

“What kind of person is King Cornou?”

The moment that Izumi asked this, Princess Hitow went from slumping and sighing, to having sparkles in her eyes.

“A wonderful gentleman! He’s thoughtful, and wiser than anyone, and even though his features look gentle he never flinches from anyone or anything. And he’s strict with himself, and strives for perfection in everything. I’ve always admired him.”

“I-, I see.”

As Hitow stressed every word with clenched fists, Izumi could only nod stiffly.

Can such a superman really exist?

“Huhuhu.”

Looking up, the happy laughter had come from Kyousui.

Eh? Was that something to laugh at just now?

Izumi looked at Kyousui as a cold sweat formed at her brow.

“I’m sorry. Your Highness was simply adorable, so…”

Hiding her mouth behind a hand, Kyousui smiled once again, sending the Princess into bewilderment, and then a scowl.
After her smile disappeared, Kyousui gave Hitow a warm gaze that an older sister might give to her younger sister.

“It seems that Your Highness has fallen in love with King Cornou.”

The Princess flushed again.

“Ah… no, rather than falling in love, it’s more… like respect…”

No, it’s definitely falling in love, thought Izumi.

“Sometimes, falling for somebody makes a woman frail. They don’t want to be hated, and they don’t want to lose them, and they spend all day thinking about nothing but them. It once happened to me as well. Back then, there was nothing scarier to me than the thought of losing him… although, I suppose not much about that has changed…”

Kyousui smiled again, but this time it wasn’t a happy smile. Instead it was a lonely, and somehow reminiscing smile.

“Because of some circumstances between  us, we had no choice but to leave our country. With my older brother’s cooperation, we managed to leave, but until we passed the borders, not one day did we feel alive. Even when we first arrived in this nation, we were terrified of losing each other, and spent each day in fear. Up until then, I was often told in my homeland that I was bold like my brother, you know? But then I fell for him, and I changed.”

To Izumi, Kyousui had seemed to be living a happy life with her muddleheaded but kind husband. Apparently Kyousui had lived a tough life of her own though. While Kyousui’s stormy life saddened Izumi, at the same time it also made her envious. After all, Kyousui’s fears were testament to the strength of her feelings for the man.

“But, it’s fine. Falling in love weakens a woman, but building that love grants her strength. And once she gives birth, she becomes the strongest being in the world, or so my brother often told me.”

Completely changed from the mournful mood from before, Kyousui’s expression was clear.

“After all, you won’t be able to live if you don’t stop fretting.”

“…Well, it’s true that the energy of the housewives in the marketplace scares even me sometimes.”

Izumi recalled the older women during limited-time sales. That impudent boldness of theirs was certainly fearsome.

“It sounds unpleasant to word it this way, but please become more shameless. During a famine there is certainly no room for pickiness, but things are different now. Isn’t Your Highness’ duty to work hard with King Cornou so that a famine never happens again?”

The Princess raised her head in realisation. Then, she slowly lowered her gaze, closed her eyes, and began to think.

“From the moment he was enthroned, King Cornou faced hardship after hardship. Yet despite that, he faced everything without faltering… I wanted to become his strength… But despite that, before I realised it, I was thinking about nothing except how I didn’t want him to hate me.”

Standing up, the Princess pulled Kyousui into a tight embrace.

“Thank you for being honest with me. I’ll try telling him, and I might be hated, but I’ll let him know that I’ll give my best.”

Under the bright red hair, Kyousui’s eyes widened. Eventually they narrowed as she nodded, and patted the Princess on the back, almost like an older sister praising her younger sister.

The mood kind of called for clapping, and it seemed like things were solved, so just as Izumi was wondering if she could close the window now, a large bang rang out.
The door was opened wide, and from it appeared the man from earlier, the child Hitow had saved, and finally a large stranger with a full beard.
The very moment that the door was shut, the bearded man bowed his head. As he did, Izumi caught a glimpse into the basket on his back.

“Princess Hitow, thank you very much for saving the life of my son.”

The small child bowed as well.

“Thank you, Your Highness.”

Princess Hitow parted from Kyousui to walk to the boy’s side, and she bent down to meet eyes with him.

“You’re very welcome,” she said, ruffling the smiling boy’s head, as he seemed to find it ticklish.

“The fire’s gone,” started Kyousui’s husband. “Ah-, I didn’t say anything to the soldiers, okay? He said he wanted to thank her no matter what, so I brought him here, but… was that not okay?”

He looked at Kyousui to check her expression.

“No, it’s absolutely fine.”

Hearing Kyousui’s answer, a smile bloomed on his face.

“Thank goodness. You’re terrifying when you’re angry, Kyousui-san.”

If you put it nicely, the man was pure, but he was as unreliable as a person could get. Still, everybody had their own taste in romantic partners. As Izumi watched the couple nestle up together, she felt like she had been taught a lesson in the complexity of the human heart.

“Your Highness jumped into the fire yourself. Just how can I thank you? I will do anything in my power.”

In response to the bearded man’s sincere words, the Princess turned to face Izumi.

“If you want to thank somebody, thank Magician-dono. She lent me her cloak, even though it was more than luxurious enough to feed a family for a year.”

She knew it was expensive, but to think it was that expensive…
If, just if, she met with Huuron for a third time, what on earth was she supposed to she say?
As Izumi prayed that she never meet him again, the bearded man approached her.
From the basket on his back, he produced a pair of long scissors. The handle was quite lengthy, and closely resembled hedge-clippers.

“I used to use these, back when I was a craftsman. It’s the next important thing after my life. It can’t compare to that cloak, but please accept it.”

“No, taking something so important to you is a little…”

Izumi waved her hands and tried to refuse, but it caused the bearded man to frown.
Seeing that, Kyousui’s husband suddenly took the scissors.

“Mister Karasu…”

The bearded man gave him a look of relief.
Kyousui’s husband, Karasu, reverently presented the scissors to Izumi.

“Please accept it. If you decline due to kindness, Lady Magician, it will make him feel uncomfortable instead. And people often do say that things you receive without paying back for will end up hindering you, after all.”

Even so, Izumi wasn’t sure about it. But when she glanced at the man, she found that both he and the boy here bowing towards her. So she reached for the scissors. If it helped the man settle his heart, then that was what she would do.

“Stay safe.”

After waving at the boy, with the scissors in hand, Izumi shut the window.
