Due to how quickly the flowers stop blooming, as well as various legends and myths (and classic literature) regarding them, sakura are connected to the concept of death in Japanese folklore.

There lie cadavers buried under the cherry blossoms!

This is a truth that you must accept. For how else could the flowers of the cherry tree be so magnificent in their bloom? I spent the past several days feeling terribly ill at ease, as I was unable to accept such a beauty. But now, at last, the truth has finally sunk in. There lie cadavers buried under the cherry blossoms. You must accept this.

My house is one that contains a multitude of tools and implements⎯-so why then, from among such trinkets and baubles, did the blade of a safety razor come to me like a vision to a clairvoyant every night on my way home? You say you know not why, whereas I myself cannot comprehend it⎯-the two of which verily amount to the same thing.

A flowering tree, on the other hand, gives forth its essence when it reaches that stage known as full bloom, and in doing so, it emanates a mysterious aura comparable to the state of perfect stillness approached by a fast-spinning top, or perhaps the fleeting sensory impressions roused by a spectacular musical performance, or something like the afterglow that follows the burning act of consummation. It is this beauty, wondrous and vivacious, that never ceases to captivate the human spirit.

Nonetheless, yesterday and the day before, it was the selfsame thing that caused my heart to fall under an intense spell of gloom. I was unable to accept such a beauty. On the contrary, I became anxious and fell into a state of melancholy, and a feeling of emptiness overtook me. But now, at long last, I understand.

You see, beneath the splendor of those cherry trees blooming in profusion, cadavers had been buried one by one, if you can imagine for a moment. Then, soon enough, you’ll understand just what sort of anxiety I’d been feeling.

The cadavers of horses, the cadavers of dogs and cats, and it seems, the cadavers of human beings too. Rotting cadavers, crawling with maggots, reeking of a most intolerable stench, all the while seeping a liquid so pure and clear. The cherry tree, as if it were the rapacious octopus, extends its roots outward to grasp. Like the feeding tentacles of the sea anemone, its roots enfold to partake of that liquid.

What could form such a petal? What was behind the creation of such a stamen? I had envisioned it in dreamlike detail: The roots had gathered silently, matter-of-factly, to siphon that pure, clear liquid into its vascular system.

How you must be grimacing at the very thought! Not a very pretty way of looking at things, is it? Finally, I had come to see the cherry blossoms for what they were, and it freed me from what had been an unsettling mystery yesterday and the day before.

A few days earlier, I had descended into a nearby ravine, scrambling down the rocks. There in the splashing water, hither and thither, doodlebugs were coming into being in the manner of the birth of Venus herself. I watched them soar into the hollow where, as you may know, they perform their beautiful mating ritual. After walking a little further, I came across something horrifying. On the banks of the river, where the shallows ought to have been, there was no such water to be seen. A brilliant shimmer resembling an oil slick drifted across the entire surface. You must be wondering what it was. There, the countless thousands of cadavers of doodlebugs perforated the water’s surface. They lay piled in mounds, their wings curling in the sunlight, glistening like spilled oil. There, after they had finished spawning, became their grave.

At the sight alone, I felt as if I had suffered a blow to the chest. In bearing witness to the gradual process of decay that appeared to be taking place in that grave of doodlebugs, I had tasted a cruel delight.

There was not a single joyous thing to be found in this ravine. The warbler and the tit, the pale sunlight, and saplings too, were but a distant notion. That tragic fate, it seemed to me, was unavoidable. It was then that the picture became clear in my mind for the first time: It was a counterbalance. My heart had been pining for melancholy as if I were an evil spirit. That state of melancholy had been brought to an end, and now my mind was at peace once more.

By now, your armpits must be damp with sweat, just as mine are. Nothing to be ashamed of. After all, they are certainly no stickier than semen. And on that note, let us conclude our melancholy.

Alas, there lie cadavers buried under the cherry blossoms!

As for what on earth brought about such a wild flight of fancy involving cadavers, it appears to be anyone’s guess. That it may be part and parcel of the cherry blossoms is a notion I cannot seem to shake out of my head, no matter how I try.

I believe I have hereby earned the right, like the many locals flocking to the festivities taking place under those flowering trees, to drink merrily in celebration of the cherry blossom viewing season!

– translated by Bonnie Huie from Kajii Motojirou’s ‘Under the Cherry Blossoms’

My parents thought that since I went last year, I was obviously going to the flower viewing party again.

Ask me first! Say something at least!

I bet they kept it on the down-low on purpose!

I didn’t wanna go.

But neither did I have the courage to try getting food poisoning again.

Never again, Reika.

I seriously thought I would die.

I swear I saw a bright light at the end of a tunnel…

Okaasama was determined to pair me up this year so she enthusiastically dressed me in a furisode.

A style of kimono distinguishable by its long sleeves. Furisode are the most formal style of kimono worn by young unmarried women in Japan.

Cherry blossoms at night, and a furisode.

Scary…

Please, no.

Maybe if it rained then all the sakura would be washed away, along with the party.

*

*

The skies were clear.

Oniisama was busy with work, so he’d be arriving later.

He was busy quite a lot, recently.

He still hadn’t taken me out to eat like he promised for White Day either.

“My! Reika-san! Thank you so much for coming!” greeted Mrs. Kaburagi, with literally open arms.

As usual, she was eye-catching and beautiful.

And Chairman Kaburagi still had that mature adult charm!

His legs were so much longer than Otousama’s!

And he wasn’t overweight, either!

Haah, so cool…

Anyway, after Madam Kaburagi gave me some truly ridiculous praise for my furisode, the topic changed to her son.

“I hear that that boy actually became the President of the Pivoine. Will that surly kid really be able to manage?”

“Masaya-sama is very popular, so I do not believe there is anything to worry about.”

“You think? He isn’t causing you any problems, Reika-san?”

“Heavens, no. Masaya-sama is competent and always has it together. And his grades are always at the top, and…”

Since we weren’t all that close I was struggling to find things to praise him for.

Hmmm…

Good points, good points… What are his good points…?

Too bad. Nothing comes to mind.

“Don’t hesitate to let me know if that stupid boy of mine causes you any trouble. I’ll really let him have it.”

“My… Ohohoho…”

He was causing me trouble right now, actually.

“Anyway, please look after Masaya, okay?”

“I am in his care…”

I really didn’t want to look after him though.

Uu, even my smile had gone stiff.

The Kaburagi pair gave me brilliant smiles before leaving to greet other guests.

After that, Otousama brought me around the venue to greet people.

It was exhausting keeping this act up…

After we were done greeting my parents’ closer acquaintances, I was finally given my freedom.

Recently a lot of people had been recommending their sons to me, so I was having a rough time dodging all the bullets.

Thanks to that I had no appetite, despite the feast before me.

I picked up some sakura jelly and helped myself to a few bites while I took a breather.

Oh. This was pretty good.

“Good evening, Kisshouin-san.”

“…Gokigen’yoh, Enjou-sama.”

Someone thoroughly unpleasant had come my way.

“So you’re wearing a furisode this time, in… deep scarlet, I think you call this? It suits you. You look lovely tonight.”

“Thank you very much…”

Haah, his smile was suspicious…

I wonder if he was holding a grudge after that White Day rumour.

I just wanted to make a break for it…

“Aren’t you going to look at the flowers?”

“I admired them up-close not too long ago. At any rate, I think that the night-time sakura should be enjoyed from a little further away.”

I could hear the guests praising the weeping sakura again. It had bloomed as gorgeously as last year.

Weeping Sakura

And the yoshino cherries had bloomed just as well.

It almost looked like another world, which to be honest was a little scary.

“I think I know what you mean. Don’t the sakura seem a bit scary at night? It’s almost like they bloomed by using human lifeblood as fertiliser. Say, isn’t there a tale about burying-”

“A corpse under the roots of a sakura tree!”

Exactly! Exactly!

Sakura are scary at night, right!?

I mean I like sakura, and they’re beautiful at night, but it’s because they’re so beautiful that it creeps me out!

Why?

Why did anybody think it would be a good idea to have a night-time banquet under the sakura?

“You know, when I read Kajii Motojirou’s poem, I thought, ‘I know exactly what he means.’ There’s just this indescribable discomfort when you see them in the night like this, isn’t there?”

Yeah! Yeah!

I know what you mean!

“But they hardly seem so frightening in the daytime, do they?”

“It’s because of the way the flowers seem to float in the darkness. It feels like you’ll get pulled in too.”

“That makes sense.”

“The weeping sakura here isn’t too bad, since it’s just barely 50 years old. But as for those sakura that have lived for hundreds of years… I can only imagine how much human blood they’ve drunk.”

“You are scaring me, so please stop!”

You’re going to make me imagine it.

“How mysterious. Even though they are all flowers, neither the plum nor the peach blossoms feel at all scary at night, do they?”

Ume plum blossoms at night.
Peach blossoms at night.

“Shhh. If Masaya’s mum hears you say that she’s going to plan something big, and all because ‘Reika-san likes peach and plum blossoms’ okay?”

Oh dear.

I quickly clamped my mouth shut.

Madam Kaburagi loved her events, so I could actually see her doing it.

Enjou smiled at me in amusement.

“But as scared as you seem to be of the sakura at night, you’re fond of sweets made from them, no? For example, sakuramochi.”

Why and how did he know this?

Sakuramochi is a Japanese sweet consisting of sweet pink-colored rice cake (mochi) with a red bean paste center, and wrapped in a pickled cherry blossom leaf. Eaten during the spring, especially on hinamatsuri, or at flower viewing parties. The ball-style is endemic to the Kansai region, while the wrap style is the traditional style for the Kantou region, including Tokyo.

Flower-themed sweets from the West tasted a bit strange, and I wasn’t sure what I thought of them. Rose jam for example.

The Japanese equivalents on the other hand, I was quite fond of.

Sakuramochi for example, or umegaemochi.

Umegaemochi are roasted rice cakes with red beans inside, branded with an ume plum blossom design.

Huh. It was all mochi.

“Yes. I enjoy eating them because of how festive they are. It really drives home that spring is here. I think this is the same for all the desserts of each season.”

I made very sure to emphasise that I wasn’t some glutton character.

Didn’t mean I wasn’t gulping down green tea at home as I nommed on sakuramochi though!

“I see. Wow, you’re so refined, Kisshouin-san.”

That’s right. I am refined. I’m not a glutton at all.

Damned Enjou.

I could see the laughter in his eyes.

He didn’t believe me in the slightest, did he?

“As expected of you, Kisshouin-san. No wonder you seem to be enjoying that sakura jelly so much.”

See? There he goes.

I had to get back at him somehow.

“Speaking of which, Masaya was looking for you.”

“Is that so?”

So Kaburagi was serious about talking about his love troubles in the middle of this huge crowd?

“Speaking of which, are you not together with Kaburagi-sama this evening? How novel.”

“Why does it feel like you think of us as a set?”

“Well, you two are famous for being awfully intimate…”

“Come on, you wouldn’t call that intimate, right? Kisshouin-san, did you just choose that wording to mess with me?”

Ah, did I go too far with my teasing?

This snake could show his true colours.

Oh dear.

Was he going to do it?

Was he going to attack!?

While I was looking at him guardedly, somebody else appeared.

“Here you are, Shuu.”

Coming in from my five was a white hand that softly took Enjou’s arm.

It was Yuiko-san.

So she was here too…

“Yuiko.”

“I was worried when you suddenly disappeared like that, you know?” she looked up at him, leaning into his shoulder.

Yuiko-san, beautiful and fragile, had drawn the attention of all the males around us.

“You seemed to be having fun with those guys, so I thought it would be fine to step away.”

“My, is somebody jealous?”

“Who knows.”

I looked around at all the men staring jealously at Yuiko-san and Enjou.

Apparently they had all been fussing over her until very recently.

Unfortunately they didn’t stand a chance against Enjou.

The two of them were picture perfect, after all.

Enjou gently tapped the hand on his arm.

“Yuiko, this is Kisshouin Reika-san. She’s in my grade at school.”

“Kisshouin… Reika-san?” she asked as she distractedly turned my way.

Big, dark eyes took me in.

I shivered a little.

“You know about Yuiko, don’t you? She’s a relative of mine. Uryuu Yuiko.”

“Gokigen’yoh. My name is Kisshouin Reika,” I smiled, as confidently as possible.

“Uryuu Yuiko. Have we… perhaps met before…?”

“Why, yes. At the Zui’ran School Festival.”

Languid eyes gazed at me for a while, before Yuiko smiled softly.

“Ah, I remember now. You were wearing a lovely china dress, no? I’m right, aren’t I?”

“Yes.”

“Huhu,” she laughed, seemingly pleased with hitting the mark.

That smile had entranced everyone around us.

“Hey, Shuu? I’m a bit thirsty.”

“Then shall we go get something for you to drink? Kisshouin-san, will…”

“I think I shall admire the sakura from a little closer. Please excuse me, Enjou-sama, Yuiko-san.”

Enjou frowned faintly.

Yuiko-san looked at me again with those jet-black eyes of hers, and smiled at me.

Good joke, Enjou. Who on earth would go anywhere with you two?

Scaryyy.

To escape as quickly as possible I busted out my ultimate skill, power-walking, but my furisode was making it impossible!

I messed up!

A penguin!

I looked like a penguin right now!

Ahh, and somehow I could feel Yuiko-san’s eyes on me from behind…

Happy thoughts, Reika, happy thoughts.

    1. I think Reika already IS a fujoshi…didn’t she admit in an earlier chapter that she only retained useless knowledge (from her past life’s lessons) like how a certain daimyo is homosexual? Something like that, lol.

  2. Awww I love the art!!😍
Thanks for the chapter, I can totally imagine how awkward she feels, it’s fine meeting someone girlfriend, you could become friends, but not when they make you feel uncomfortable though…I would escape as fast as I could though😂😂

    Nice Fan Arts :)
hmm.. Wonder what personality that Yuiko really have.. hmmm…
Wonder who’ll really get together with Reika-sama, just asking for the sake of ‘asking’, hehe.

  4. Oh my goodness, the fan art is spectacular! It tuly showcases Reika-sama’s beauty. Thank you for taking the time to link relevant chapters and information.

On another note, Sakura trees at night combined with Enjou and Yuiko… How scary.

  5. Everytime Reika mention how scary sakura at night is.. I could not help but imagine her friend, Sakura… LOL… Reika also scared of her… He..he..he…

Anyway, Reika in the fan art is too cute!!! The dress and the detail is meccha kawaii!!!

  6. Creepy Yuiko. Reika, good job avoiding them! I’m still on the EnjouxReika ship though. I can only imagine how Bakaburagi would go on and on about Wakaba with Reika later on, and the surrounding people are probably going to misunderstand the situation as them getting along.

Reading me makes me want to drink some green tea and munch on Sakuramochi too… I’ll go buy them soon hehehe.

And lovely art! Reika’s clothes all look really great! As expected of a pretty ojou-sama, even though she is disappointing on the inside (thats what makes Reika so amusing) Reika’s cute and chubby in my head though, so everytime I see art like these I start to think, oh yeah, she’s actually a pretty Ojou-sama.. hehehe

    Thanks for the new chapter!

      1. False!!!!!!!! Reika never goes more than two chapters without falling in love. With snacks. Cookies. Cakes. Pastries. Chocolate. Different cookies. Different cakes. More chocolate. Chips. Chocolate chips. Chocolate cookies. Chocolate chip cookies. Ramen. Pasta. Dim sum. The list goes on and on and on…..

      1. Before you know it, she’ll be trawling the incel subreddit.

Honestly, you make a good point. She’s always wanting to make new friends, so it doesn’t hurt for her to get to know some of the boys. She can just dodge the ones that prove to be overt gold diggers.

Everybody knows she’s a political bargaining chip, but that doesn’t mean the process has to be unpleasant.

        1. The way I reason it, being wanted for your status really is no worse than people wanting you because they’re just into red hair or thicc ass. Maybe Reika should just get over it.

            1. Well fictional love is way more romantic than IRL ones.
People are attracted to each other for completely random reasons. Sure that guy has a foot fetish, but his marriage still works great. About one of the least random things about Reika is that other people in her social class find her attractive for her status. Least surprising thing ever. If you keep adding specific picky criteria for mates you’re getting a situation where you’re winnowing half the population with one criteria, then winnowing another half with your second . . .

  7. If only Enjou went to Bakaragi for love advice and got led down the Way of the Tanuki. Shuusuke needs to realize that Reika is the anti-Goldilocks, who likes them older (Kaburagi elder) or younger (Yukino).

Speaking of Yukino, I wonder why he dislikes of feels discomfort around Yuiko. Does Yuiko make Shuusuke feel hemmed in? Or is that chick a yandere?

    1. I think it’s a bit of everything.

She’s clingy but he’s the type that tries to please everybody, even if it makes him unhappy or stressed out. He doesn’t have the heart to turn her down. It’s his biggest character flaw.

That and Yuiko is spoiling his chances with Reika. He was having a cozy conversation before she came along.

      Liked by 1 person

    2. Enjou already knows that she likes older men. He made that comment when she was hanging out with Mao’s older brother (cousin?).

He still wants her to like him so he’s going to keep trying.

He probably feels uncomfortable about her if she’s like that all the time. She’s being super possessive if she’s really not in a fiance relationship.

  8. Yes! It’s been awhile, but now the food pictures are back!

I think Bakaburagi’s mom knows just how troublesome her son is. I wonder if tue real reason she goes along with matxhmaking and arrange marriages is because she suspects her son has barely any chances on his own of finding a nice girl in her right mind who would willingly want to deal with all that.

(Shipping glasses-ON??) Taking a page from the Casanova Village chief, Enjou sure is smooth with his compliments. But the turns of their conversation…Anyways, yeah, with all the Reika-watching Enjou seems to do, there’s no way he doesn’t already know she’s a foodie. But the ambiguity with Yuiko… blerg >P She better not try anything fishy with Reika.

Thanks so much for this chapter. Cherry blossoms at night seem so much more creepy with all the death and underworld lore going around.

I love the art for Reika’s dresses! So pretty~

    1. >Recently a lot of people had been recommending their sons to me, so I was having a rough time dodging all the bullets.

A fair bit of this is probably the Kisshouin name, but I suspect Reika – outer Reika, at least – is far more popular with the opposite sex than she thinks. These rich families don’t need to compromise and they all seem to think she’s a great catch.

Of course, being Reika, she thinks this popularity is only with the girls…

  9. I prefer Reika with her brother’s friend. Dunno why… But, whoever it is as long it’s not Bakaburagi (his personality annoyed me so much), I’ll accept.

I never thought that Reika has that long hair. But it shows perfectly Reika’s personality and beauty.

Thank u for the chapter and art.

    1. Probably because Kaburagi costs her hitherto unknown levels of stress, while Imari makes her smile every single time.

But then you remember Imari gets stabbed for his philandering and his penchant for older married women. If he ever wants Reika he better shape up. >:(

      1. To be fair, if you really think about it, Kaburagi hasn’t actually done anything to Reika in particular. It’s mostly just that Reika is unreasonably scared of him.

The worst thing he’s ever done was wayyyy back in grade school, when he had her spy on Yurie. After that was the one comment about her weight, him trying to bond with her by giving her those poems and soliciting advice about Wakaba.
So in the big scheme of things . . . eh.

      2. Right, I forgot bout that. Imari has this older brother aura, but weak towards girls and women. Reika must be very careful with him… Huuuh, poor Reika. How long she will be the stalking horse?

  14. Ah! The fanart of the red furisode really fits the image! The picture of the red furisode at the beginning of the chapter… was a bit over-exuberant? Or if I use my American speak: only a hooker trying to be high-class or a nouveau-riche with no one to stop her would wear that in that combination… XD

    Enjou… Enjou ship?!?!

I always appreciated the cadavers under the Sakura concept, but whenever I read the story it came from and the… juices… it never fails to squick me.

“He still hadn’t taken me out to eat like he promised for White Day either.”
Ohhhh… has he gotten a girlfriend?

He did say “anyone but Imari” to Reika before so maybe he’s gotten over his sister complex.

Miss Kaburagi still trying to push her son at Reika. Ship has sailed. SAILED. Although it’s not really her fault, Reika is always being vague about it.

    Thank you very much…

    Haah, his smile was suspicious…”

Yup, Enjou is still trying to earn Reika points. Not working at all though.

And yes, it looks like Reika really his misinterpreting Enjou’s smile. I’m sure he’s trying to be friendly.

“Why does it feel like you think of us as a set?

Well, you two are famous for being awfully intimate…

Come on, you wouldn’t call that intimate, right? Kisshouin-san, did you just choose that wording to mess with me?”

Enjou Translation: NOT GAY TOTALLY STRAIGHT AND AVAILABLE

“”I was worried when you suddenly disappeared like that, you know?” she looked up at him, leaning into his shoulder.

Yuiko-san, beautiful and fragile, had drawn the attention of all the males around us.

“You seemed to be having fun with those guys, so I thought it would be fine to step away.”
    Possessive much?

Basically, Enjou took the first chance to had to shake her off and woe Reika.

“You know about Yuiko, don’t you? She’s a relative of mine. Uryuu Yuiko.”
Haha, trying to emphasis that they are related. Probably not too closely though? Even in Japan first cousins would be worthy of comment.

Did he say that she was his fiance or something? Or was that a joke? Or maybe that was birdboy?

“Then shall we go get something for you to drink? Kisshouin-san, will…

I think I shall admire the sakura from a little closer. Please excuse me, Enjou-sama, Yuiko-san.

    Enjou frowned faintly.

Yuiko-san looked at me again with those jet-black eyes of hers, and smiled at me.”
Haha. Now Reika is using the first chance she had to shake him off.

Was that a “good you know your place” smile or a smug “I’m taking him away from you” smile or a “I’m glad you aren’t interested” smile? Probably not the last one.

    1. “You seemed to be having fun with those guys, so I thought it would be fine to step away.”

      One word – s*ut.

Also reading this and compared to raw and other translation, it really is different in scene interpretation. Hmmmmm

  18. I saw another farart pic for her with her is updo it was totally cute
I’m on the ship with Enju unless some new character come on the way I DON’t want her to end up alone please
And yes I think her brother is in a realtionship for a while now ( he is in his 20s so it would be strange if he never had) I don’t know why I feel sad though maybe since Reika didn’t find one
    yet

  19. Hooray for the longest convo between Enjou and Reika so far! Poor Enjou, Reika only thinks of him as “someone thoroughly unpleasant” – hopefully they make some progress soon.

  20. Enjou Pov

I had been beset by the usual crowd of people that liked to cluck around me incessantly, I had been reluctant in coming but then I heard that someone interesting would be here, smiling to myself I pretended to listen intently, Yuiko was surrounded by guys as per usual, I took that moment to leave her side and go find that person, humming to myself when I spied familiar curls sitting off to the side trying to look inconspicuous, as if that were possible.

She really looked lovely this evening, despite wearing a slightly annoyed expression, I had heard various whispers of guys attempting to get in her good graces, I snorted inwardly, if the Kaburagi and Enjou top class sons make her sick then fat chance of you guys getting a foot in, ah, I got a little depressed at the thought…

    “Good evening, Kisshouin-san.”

    “…Gokigen’yoh, Enjou-sama.”

Oh ho ho, she has that expression of resentment and annoyance, sigh…

“So you’re wearing a furisode this time, in… deep scarlet, I think you call this? It suits you. You look lovely tonight.”

    “Thank you very much…”

Why must you look at me so suspiciously!!

“Aren’t you going to look at the flowers?”

“I admired them up-close not too long ago. At any rate, I think that the night-time sakura should be enjoyed from a little further away.”

Judging from her demeanor, do I detect a hint of fear? I decided to probe..

“I think I know what you mean. Don’t the Sakura seem a bit scary at night? It’s almost like they bloomed by using human lifeblood as fertilizer. Say, isn’t there a tale about burying-”

“A corpse under the roots of a sakura tree!”

I watched her wide expressive eyes reveal everything to me, I smile inwardly.

“You know, when I read Kajii Motojirou’s poem, I thought, ‘I know exactly what he means.’ There’s just this indescribable discomfort when you see them in the night like this, isn’t there?” I want to grin as her head bobs up and down emphatically, making her curls shimmer as they bounced freely around her face, I had an overwhelming urge to reach out and pull those curls, were they as soft as they appeared? (here he is thinking such thoughts while making her uncomfortable… you bastard!)

“But they hardly seem so frightening in the daytime, do they?”

“It’s because of the way the flowers seem to float in the darkness. It feels like you’ll get pulled in too.” You’re letting your guard down Kisshouin…

    “That makes sense.”

“The weeping sakura here isn’t too bad, since it’s just barely 50 years old. But as for those sakura that have lived for hundreds of years… I can only imagine how much human blood they’ve drunk.” Grinning I went in for the kill, seriously, my retribution for that bit of gossip you spread is minor in comparison, do you have any idea how much annoyance you created by doing that! don’t make me your sacrificial lamb!

“You are scaring me, so please stop!” seeing her lips quiver had a strange effect on me. (You goddamn S!)

“How mysterious. Even though they are all flowers, neither the plum nor the peach blossoms feel at all scary at night, do they?” She looked up at me wide-eyed, I had to stop myself moving forward…

“Shhh. If Masaya’s mum hears you say that she’s going to plan something big, and all because ‘Reika-san likes peach and plum blossoms’ okay?” watching that instant recoil was delightful, any thoughts about her and Masaya were instantly squashed. I felt rather happy.

“But as scared as you seem to be of the sakura at night, you’re fond of sweets made from them, no? For example, sakuramochi.” seeing her expression I realized my mistake… I’m not a stalker!… goddammit it’s not like I stare at her eating food all day! although I don’t think she would mind doing so…

“Yes. I enjoy eating them because of how festive they are. It really drives home that spring is here. I think this is the same for all the desserts of each season.” She looked truly miffed, so adorable I couldn’t help but smile, Kisshouin your healthy appetite is one of the appealing parts about you, when I am surrounded by women who constantly nibble small pieces pretending they’re not hungry is so unpleasant, seeing someone who genuinely enjoys eating is so refreshing!

“As expected of you, Kisshouin-san. No wonder you seem to be enjoying that sakura jelly so much.” Ah, I couldn’t help that slight dig… and after praising you so much too… sigh… oh did she just pout at me? gah! cute!

“Speaking of which, Masaya was looking for you.” Oh whats this, is the Empress seeking to punish me? grinning I wait for the show.

    “Is that so?”

“Speaking of which, are you not together with Kaburagi-sama this evening? How novel.” Do you think we are Co-joined twins?

“Why does it feel like you think of us as a set?”

“Well, you two are famous for being awfully intimate…” Oh, hoho.. are you implying that? who knew you were a closet fujoshi!

“Come on, you wouldn’t call that intimate, right? Kisshouin-san, did you just choose that wording to mess with me?” I detected her Empress mode retract. A familiar voice came from behind, hiding my annoyance.

“Here you are, Shuu.” I took a side glance at Kisshouin only to see nothing, no jealousy, no interest, just a blank look of indifference, sighing I felt Yuikos hand on my arm, as though claiming me as hers, I snort inwardly while looking calm.

    “Yuiko.”

“I was worried when you suddenly disappeared like that, you know?” she looked up at him, leaning into his shoulder.

“You seemed to be having fun with those guys, so I thought it would be fine to step away.” Seriously why didn’t you stay there longer…

“My, is somebody jealous?” No, not at all.

“Who knows.” Again why didn’t you stay with them longer…

I gently tapped the hand on my arm. Seriously woman stop touching me get your hand off me right now!

“Yuiko, this is Kisshouin Reika-san. She’s in my grade at school.”

“Kisshouin… Reika-san?” she asked as she distractedly turned towards Kisshouin.

I watched Kisshouin shiver a little, eyes narrowing I looked at Yuiko.

“You know about Yuiko, don’t you? She’s a relative of mine. Uryuu Yuiko.” I emphasized the Relative part, that’s what she is, after all, a cousin.

“Gokigen’yoh. My name is Kisshouin Reika,”

“Uryuu Yuiko. Have we… perhaps met before…?”

“Why, yes. At the Suiran School Festival.”

“Ah, I remember now. You were wearing a lovely china dress, no? I’m right, aren’t I?” My eyes narrowed at that, Yuiko was so very good at making a snide comment sound perfectly genuine and complimentary.

    “Yes.”

“Huhu,” she laughed, seemingly pleased with hitting the mark.

“Hey, Shuu? I’m a bit thirsty.”

“Then shall we go get something for you to drink? Kisshouin-san, will…”

“I think I shall admire the Sakura from a little closer. Please excuse me, Enjou-sama, Yuiko-san.” … is she comparing spending time with us less enjoyable than a blood-soaked Sakura tree that terrifies her?… I watched her flee like a waddling penguin…

I frowned faintly. So annoying, I get so little time to interact with Kisshouin like this, I was so very displeased…

  21. Hey, wait!

If Yuiko came from five, that means she was behind Reika. Enjou would’ve noticed her at some point (maybe since the beginning).

    He did it again…

I like to imagine this is where Yuiko REALLY considered Reika a threat.
I bet the entire time Enjou is with her, he’s fake-smiling while being polite. However, with Reika he starts smiling for real and changes expressions.

I like to think Enjou genuinely enjoys talking to Reika, though. He’s a conversation-maker, and Reika is actually pretty good at keeping up while making some pretty interesting contributions.
    She’s unpredictable at times.

(If that’s one of the things he loved about her, the ReiNjou ship could seriously work. If he could get Reika to consider him. And he became a bit more honest with her)

Anyway, what if Oniisama is actually busy dealing with fraud now? Wouldn’t that be a twist? XD

  22. As soon as he saw Reika Enjou just couldn’t actually control himself, abandoned his cousin, was super talkative and not dangerous for once and seemed to really care being turned down so decisively. As much as I want to be objective and not jump to conclusions, it definitely seems fishy to me at this point! Thank you, Este! Somehow these past couple days I was so ditzy and thought so much about Reika so these chapters came like that time with Kaburagi-unexpectedly yet I felt like they were calling me~

    => shampoo and hair conditioner.

Anyway, she said she lost appetite (because of people trying to sell their sons to her) but she still grabbed a sakura jelly :v

      1. Man, those comics are actually pretty nice! It’s pretty fun to see the lines and scenes from the novel drawn out. Maybe at some point some nice person will make translated versions for others to enjoy ;) ;)
