Arachne – 2

Arachne (Second Part)

The brown-haired woman’s name is Aize Foren.

She’s the daughter of a wealthy merchant in the town of Rihak, located near this forest. According to her, she was on her way back from a business deal at the neighboring village when the bandits attacked.

I just randomly made up a story that goes something like ‘I was living together with my mother in the forest, but she died of sickness, so I left and tried to go to the town’, but thankfully, she believed and sympathized with me.

I also explained that my strength came from being trained by my ex-adventurer mother, and again the woman doesn’t hold even an ounce of doubt.

…So that means this world has adventurers.

…Well, I did have my suspicions from seeing mother turning the tables on all those people who often came to challenge her.

And so, when I said I want to work at the town, she said that new immigrants to the town require a guarantor, and that she can be one for me if I want.

Indeed, one shouldn’t hesitate to save people.

And then she continued to say “That’s not nearly enough to show my thanks!”… Which led to me being dragged inside the Foren house immediately after we entered the town. Right now, I’m being assaulted with food by the Foren family at the dining table.

“Miss, we simply can’t express our gratitude enough for saving Aize when she was in danger… Ah, this grilled Horned Wolf’s innards is exquisite, you know?! And how about this Lesser Dragon’s tail steak?”

“Indeed… Aize is our house’s only child… The Foren family line just barely managed to survive today. Ah, I’ve heard that this Ogre Bear paw soup has some good medicinal qualities. Please, don’t be shy.”

“Really, no matter how much I give my thanks, it won’t be enough! Ah, this hamburg steak made from wyvern and sea dragon meat is amazing too, please have some!”

Umm… How do I say this…

Everyone in the Foren family seems to have the hobby of eating some really strange food.

They spent some big money without hesitation to collect all these rare ingredients, and I’m grateful for this generous feast, but…

No, I mean, I’m still an Arachne, you know?

I don’t have any problems with eating this sort of food, even if it’s a snake or a wolf or anything.

Just that, my [Predation] skill has been reacting non-stop ever since a while ago.

So it turns out that this skill even activates with prey I don’t hunt myself…

When the dinner’s over, even though my level was just 7 (it went up from defeating the bandits), my stats went insane.

______________________________________________

No no, I’m not exactly aiming to be a hero, you know?!

I’m fine with being a run-of-the-mill citizen! I’m going to be a dressmaker in this town!

Yeah, so this status isn’t something I can show to people… If they see it, I’m absolutely going to get dragged into the mess that is ‘defeating monsters’ or ‘becoming an officer for the country’ or, in the worst case scenario, ‘becoming a test subject’.

I didn’t see my stats. Yup.

After the meal, while I’m still dizzy from seeing my extreme stats, Aize sidled up to me and started talking.

“…So, does Lady Shiori have any plans while living in this town? If not, then you can just stay here like this…”

…For some reason, that sent a chill running down my spine. This feeling is a lot like when my sisters were chasing after me.

Aize, why are your cheeks so red? Wait, actually, what’s your hand doing on my thigh?

“N-No, I already got the reward from defeating the bandits, so I was thinking to use the money to start up a tailor…”

“…Oh, is that so… What a pity. But if that’s your plan, then we will help with advertising!”

“Y-y-yes. Thank you very much…”

And so, I opened a tailor shop in the town of Rihak.

Three months since then. My tailor shop is doing well.

After Aize introduced to me a cheap place, I rented it and hung up a wooden sign, and I got my own store just like that. While it’s just a small store, right from the very first day I began business, a sea of adventurers poured inside and filled up every bit of standing space of the shop, thanks to Aize announcing to the whole adventurer’s guild about how my dress stopped a bandit’s blade (apparently, the escorts who got downed by the bandits were people hired from the guild). And that’s why my shop is doing so well.

Well, I said that, but the only products I can make are Arachne silk clothes, so rear-line adventurers probably make up most of my customers.

These days, the shop finally calmed down compared to its hectic first days, but I still get plenty of profits.

While it’s true that I’m the only sewer in this shop, and most of my orders are custom tailored clothes so I can’t make a lot of them, but since I get my materials practically for free, I’m raking in cash.

“Oh? So this is the clothing store I’ve been hearing about quite a lot these days, is it?”

“That’s right. Their clothes have more defense than even some lower tier hard leather armor, they go well with magic buffs, and best of all, they’re cheap! This is the best place to buy clothes for people in the mid-rear position of the party, like me!”

The people who opened the door and came inside the shop was a man and a woman, both looking like adventurers.

The woman is a customer who recently bought a tailored robe from me.

So a repeat customer, is it. I’m grateful for your patronage.

“That so… But in the end, they’re still cloth armor, right? This place doesn’t have Hydra Leather Armor or Dragon Scale Armor, right?”

“Don’t ask for the impossible. This place specializes in clothes and cloth armor, you know?”

“Tch, I knew it, gotta hunt for them myself… Useless store.”

…Ah, he just ticked me off.

That was a challenge, right? A challenge, right?!

I smiled at the adventurer – most likely a warrior – bearing the face of a man who just barely stepped into adulthood, and opened my mouth.

“Customer, I sincerely apologize for our lacking store… If you can wait for a while, around a month, we’ll have some new items in stock, and I hope you’ll visit us again then.”

“Uh… What?! You’re… the owner?”

“Yes, I am Shiori Arachne, owner of this Arachne Tailor. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”

The adventurer’s face turned red like a tomato, his eyes kept staring at my face dumbfounded… Is he a lolicon?

Well, I’m someone with the appearance of a 13 year old, real age of 4 months counting from my birth, and mental age of a 24 year old. That’s the sort of messed-up existence I am, so I’ll forgive his rudeness.

“Aaargh! Geez! Just ignore what this oaf says, Shiori! You’re cute like always!”

The female adventurer, who’s probably a magician, hugged me from behind and rubbed her cheeks against mine.

In these sorts of situations, the fact that she’s of the same sex as me, and thus doesn’t hold back at all, only makes it more difficult to tactfully deal with her…

“Mish… Miss cuffomer… Pwease calm down…” *Pomf*

As I’m getting knocked down and petted by the woman, I make a promise to myself to expand the shop and hire more employees as soon as possible…

To the east of the town of Rihak is the sprawling Forest of Magical Beasts.

I had been diving into this place since three days ago.

I came here because I heard that this is where I can find not only Lesser Dragons and Hydras, but also Adamantite Turtles, Silver Fang Wolves, etc… These monsters are the source of super-first-rate armor materials, and this forest is their home.

While my level is just 7, my stats are practically equal to S-rank adventurers’ thanks to [Predation]. Which means, if I return to my real form – my Arachne form – and if I only stay in the shallow parts of this forest, nothing can hurt me.

Furthermore, the meat of the prey I hunted can’t be used as materials, so they went on an express train to my stomach.

In the end, I grew even more powerful thanks to [Predation].

I’m already more powerful than mother now… probably.

The basis for my guess came from the fact that the forest where I was born doesn’t have many strong monsters, so after my sisters ate each other, their growth rate would slow down quite a lot.

“Hmmm, as I thought, there’s only Silver Fang Wolves and Fire Foxes in the forest’s outer areas… Maybe it’s time to dive deeper. My level went up enough, anyway.”

I activate Tactile ThreadSensor Web and check my status.

As my level rose, I also gained the skills [Will-o’-the-wisp] and [Bite].

Thankfully, it seems like I can still use these two skills when in human form.

…Yeah, this is probably enough to hunt a standalone Lesser Dragon or Hydra in the deeper areas.

I’ll hunt for around two days more and then return to the shop to start production.

Hahahah, just you wait!

When I’m done with this, not only can my shop provide for support-type adventurers, but I can also attract adventurers who fight on the front line.

Let’s aim to become the number one tailor in town!

…I have a feeling my shop is slowly becoming an armor shop instead of a tailor, though…

After returning from the Forest of Magical Beasts and spending another 3 weeks to make the armor, I finally somehow managed to display my new goods in the store within the one month time limit that I promised the adventurer.

And right now, in front of my eyes, among the mass of customers visiting my store is exactly that warrior, who is currently staring at a display stand in a daze.

“Hydra Leather Armor, Dragon Scale Armor… and over here is a breastplate made from Adamantite Turtle materials…? What’s more, this price… is even 30% cheaper than the market price…”

“Hohoh… Customer, did something catch your eyes?”

“Ah, yeah… Miss, can I [Identify] it?”

“Yes, the Hydra Leather Armor and the Adamantite Turtle breastplate, is it? Please feel free to examine it.”

By the way, [Identify] is a skill to examine the details of non-living objects. It can be said to be a skill that all adventurers should know.

After getting my permission, the warrior closely examines the Hydra Leather Armor and the Adamantite Turtle breastplate.

“…So this is no fake… And the durability is quite high compared to those on the market… And with this price?! How the hell?!”

Wahahah, feast your eyes on my high-quality armor and be impressed! They’re completely different from those pre-made goods on the market!

Normally, for armor that utilizes high-quality materials like these, the first thing to break isn’t the protective plate, but the leather fasteners or the thread bindings.

With that in mind, I made the fasteners and bindings from my own thread. They’re fire-proof, water-proof, and tough to boot.

The result is a maintenance-free high-quality set of armor, with not only high defense but good durability as well.

Furthermore, I get the materials by myself, so I can sell it for cheap.

“…buy…”

“…Yes?”

“I’m buying! This and this and this! I’m buying everything!!”

“Understood! Thank you for your business!!”

Hahaha, I won! I’m not going to let you go home with a single coin left in your pockets!

It won’t be long until my shop becomes the number one tailor in town!

…Even I had such naive thoughts, once.

“Hmmm… So this is the shop I’ve been hearing about recently. How disappointing.”

…Huh? Déjà vu?

“Indeed, looks like there’s some good stuff, but true first-rate armor should be made from True Dragon scales at the very least… And the best robes should be made from feathers of the God Bird Lemire… It’ll be much too risky to use this shop’s armor to go hunt Corrupted Dragons.”

Standing there is a knight who’s whispering loudly enough for me to hear him, while constantly throwing his glances my way… If I remember correctly, he’s the leader of the knight squadron of this town.

Grr… Argghh… That’s it. You’ve done it!

I don’t care about this town anymore, my shop is going to be the best one in this whole country!

“Customer, I deeply apologize for my lacking store… If you can wait for a while… about one month, I shall have new items in stock, so please come back at that time.”

“Oh? I’ve heard that True Dragons and Lemire birds only live on Dragonfang Mountain in the Greenroad region. It seems you have a way to acquire the materials… If possible, can you make enough for everyone in my squadron?”

“Yes, I will certainly fulfill your demands.”

“…I see. Then I shall be expecting your delivery.”

I actually haven’t thought about how to get those materials at all! I was just retaliating to your provocations!

So, that so-called Dragonfang Mountain, and 1 month… Counting the time needed to make the items, then it’ll be around 3 weeks… I wonder if I can do this.

One month later.

I somehow managed to reopen my shop after dragging a body full of wounds back home.

I barely managed to defeat a True Dragon and the Lemire bird and take their materials after losing a spider leg.

Well, I only lost a leg. After a while it’ll grow back, so I don’t really mind.

Furthermore, I grew to level 58 after this journey, plus I ate True Dragon and Lemire meat, so my stats rose to absurd levels.

Utilizing my high stats, I made 30 sets of armor of each type in three days.

My products should be more than enough to satisfy the knight captain’s orders.

“Hm?! This is…”

And right now, that knight captain is standing in my shop, holding a ‘God Bird Robe’ in his hand, and mumbling to himself.

“Th-this is indeed a God Bird Robe… Arachne silk is used as the base, is it? And quite high-quality silk, too. And… what’s this? No signs of any sewing. It’s as if the fabric was in the shape of a robe from the beginning…”

Exactly.

I weaved the cloth into the shape of a robe from the start, which made the robe even tougher and improved the texture.

I’m the only one who can make these sort of clothes, thanks to my ability to control the threads to a certain degree at the moment they’re created.

“And the True Dragon armor, too… Arachne silk was used for the lining… True, this means there’s no worries the armor will slip out of place, so that’s good. No need to wear additional cloth armor, which means better maneuverability.”

Indeed, three whole sleepless nights was really quite tough on me, but it was worth it. The knight captain also seems very much satisfied.

“Wonderful… I’m also surprised at how you managed to acquire True Dragon and Lemire materials over such a short time period, but more than that is how you even use such high-quality arachne silk, not as the main materials, but as the lining… and furthermore, so effectively! I must apologize, miss, I only looked at your appearance and made a poor judgement. You are indeed a master of your craft, and no one in this country can be your equal! Please allow our squad to purchase these! Of course, at whatever price you wish!”

After he apologized for his rudeness a month ago, he purchased 20 sets of True Dragon Armor and 12 God Bird Robes without a word of haggling.

And the rest were sold out completely within 3 days of sitting in the shop’s inventory. The shop’s capital is quite abundant now.

I should probably move over to a bigger place and hire more employees soon.

Then hire maybe a designer specialist, and focus more on the designing phase when making armor…

—And right when I was daydreaming about my future plans, they appeared.

*Creaks*. The shop door opens, and the hero party I’ve been hearing about these days entered the shop.

And after having one look around the shop, the oh-so-great hero granted me his opinion in a whisper.

“…As I thought, you can’t get anything good from shop equipment. Probably just going to have to hunt for drops if I want anything better… Wearing this stuff to fight the demon king would be tough going.”

Ha.

Hahaha.

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Fine!

I just need to supply you your equipment, right!

Equipment good enough to beat the demon king!!

“Hero, if I can have your guarantee that you’ll buy my goods, then I can acquire what you need in a month.”

“…Really?! Alright, I’ll make that promise. I’ll be expecting your new equipment.”

And then, one month later.

I sold the hero a four-piece set of super armor at a reasonable price. The set includes a Demon King Cloak (Enhanced), Demon King Boots (Enhanced), Demon King Clothes (Enhanced), Demon King Pants (Enhanced).

Well, just look at the names of the items and you can guess what they were made from.

In a daze, the hero takes the set of armor that has already lost its raison d’être in his hands…

Arachne – 1

Arachne (First Part)

TL note: This series is set in the same world as Pseudo-Kunoichi.

77vv1vkd32vtfulal3s94zayl95r_15uq_1i7_12y_121r9

When I reincarnated, I became a half-human half-spider Arachne monster girl!

Yeah, you probably don’t understand what I’m saying!

Even I don’t (cries).

I’m Arakura Shiori (24). I should have been working at a florist in the city, but…

The last thing I remember is a truck recklessly plowing into the shop.

……

………So basically.

It’s that thing called the “truck reincarnation”!

Because of my hobby of playing RPG games and reading internet novels, I took a few steps into the otaku realm (it’s only a few steps! Probably…) Not long after I woke up, I understood my situation.

I see, I died.

I mean, I can’t not understand my situation.

My mother and sisters’ upper bodies are all silver-haired world-class beautiful ladies/girls. But their lower bodies are huge spiders.

Taking my RPG knowledge as reference, they look exactly like the half-human half-spider monsters called ‘Arachne’.

There’s no way this is Earth, right…

And so, since I didn’t have much attachments to my past life, I quickly accepted this situation, but…

The problem is that my sisters are drooling and attacking me.

No, it’s not yuri or anything sexual.

It seems that in the Arachne race, there will be nearly a hundred babies born at the same time. These sisters will have to eat each other, and only the few strong survivors will live on and become the next generation of Arachnes!

In fact, the sisters who survived this struggle for existencecannibalism grew even bigger and stronger, as if they absorbed the power of the defeated.

However, as someone with the consciousness of a Japanese person, I can’t do something like killing my sisters and eating them… I simply ran and ran.

And, well, speaking of food, I somehow survived by catching caterpillars or rabbits or pheasants.

……Even if I became a monster, I’d rather eat caterpillars than eat my sisters. Also, they’re surprisingly tasty.

However, obviously, my food will affect my development.

One month after I regain my previous life’s consciousness, only a few of my sisters remain. These beautifully bewitching ladies all look exactly like mother, but my childish body still hasn’t grown… For comparison, I look like a 12-13 year old human girl.

I’ve heard that the nutrition taken during childhood can cause serious problems to a baby’s growth later on, but if it’s true, then I’ll probably have to spend my life as a loli Arachne.

My sisters are all over level 20 too (this world has levels and stats, like in RPG games!), while I’m the only one to still be at level 5…

However, probably because I had always been running for my life from my sisters, only my skills in running and escaping reached a higher level than any of them, I think.

Well, I managed to survive until now thanks to that.

But if things continue like this, the level difference will only grow… I can already see myself becoming a crunchy, tasty morsel for my sisters.

Which is why I’ve decided to run away from the Arachne lair in the forest, in which I had lived in for a month… to run away from my mother and sisters…

“If I’m running away, heading to a human town still seems to be the best choice, I guess…”

I kept on churning out threads from my butt, then wound them horizontally between my legs – to be precise, my front spider legs.

Once I have a wide enough sheet, I weave the thread vertically through the gaps between the current horizontal threads.

The arachne thread flowing out of my butt moves according to my thoughts to a certain degree, so I can weave a piece of fabric perfectly even without a weaving machine.

…Entering a human town butt-naked doesn’t seem to be a good idea, and so I decided to make clothes.

My train of thought went from “Well, silk came from silkworms…” to “Then maybe I can make clothes from spider threads too…” And when I tried to do it, I was surprised at how easy it was.

Not only that, I can even adjust how sticky my threads are. They’re even stronger than some metal wires, and at the same time smoother than silk, so it’s actually the perfect material for street clothes.

While I busied myself with such thoughts, the sheet of cloth is done.

It’s about 1 meter long and 0.6 meter wide.

“And this makes, umm… the 4th sheet? That’s probably enough.”

I take the sheets I made previously in my hands and use one of my knife-like claws to cut them into the correct size, then use some quick-drying sticky threads as an adhesive to glue the sheets together… and with that, an uncolored dress is finished.

Obviously, I don’t have any way to dye it, but that’s asking for too much in my current situation.

“Yeah, good work, if I do say so myself…”

It’s loose from the waist down, like a maternity dress. I made it this way so that I can wear it in both spider form and human form without tearing it apart.

Still, there’s a lot of fabric left over, so maybe I’ll make a bag.

Maybe a travel backpack… tough, somewhat big, and wearable.

Next are rations. I can’t hunt for food after I leave the forest, so I catch three rabbits, bleed them, then wrap them in cocoons made from my threads and bring them along.

Arachne threads can also preserve food. Super convenient.

……It’s similar to how other arachnes, like my mother, preserve the adventurers who comes to defeat them for later consumption.

Mmm, that’s probably enough preparations…

Well then, my mother of this life, thank you for giving birth to me.

My sisters… I’m sorry that I couldn’t let you eat me.

I’m going to survive in this world as best I can, even if I have to leave everyone…

After bowing at the direction of my mother and sisters’ nest, I put my rations and clothes into my handmade backpack and began to head out of the forest…

Back in the nest, four shadowsArachnes watch Shiori with their superhuman eyesight.

“My daughters… has Shiori left?”

“Yes, mother… it seems she’s finally gone.”

*sobs* My little cute Shiori… Shiori…”

“Don’t cry, big sister… If she stays here… She’ll be in danger.”

“Yes, I also don’t think I can resist my instinct… Both to eat her and to ‘eat’ her.”

“That soft baby skin! Those twinkling eyes! Lips like a pudding! She’s just like an unripe fruit! Even though we’re the same age… Aaaah, I really should have tried to have a taste of her!! Mainly sexually!”

As the Arachne race doesn’t give birth to males, when they need to reproduce, they capture human males to squeeze out their seed.

Naturally, when arachnes need to deal with their libidos in other occasions, the only choices left are ones of their own race and gender.

Basically, the whole Arachne race is all lesbians.

Furthermore, since the babies receive pretty much 100% of their mother’s genes, everyone looks like clones of each other.

But Shiori obviously looks different from her sisters… Her cherubic young girl appearance awakened her sisters’ sleeping lolicon tendencies, and thus led to their extreme displays of love.

However, at the same time, their instinct to eat the weak still exists. If Shiori continues to stay at the nest, sooner or later, someone is going to lose control and take her life.

“If that’s the case, we’d rather let her go…” With such thoughts in their mind, the Arachne family quietly sent Shiori off.

During that time, I simply continued on my way through the forest in spider form, with nary a thought for my mother and sisters in mind.

My burly eight spider legs, its appearance in direct contrast to my delicate-looking upper body, quickly carries me through the forest while leaving deep scars in the earth.

I don’t really feel tired, plus the uncomfortable shaking doesn’t really affect my upper body much.

Indeed, if not for an arachne’s eight legs, I wouldn’t be able to move through this uneven forest so comfortably.

I’m moving my legs at a speed that is ‘somewhat fast’ according to my senses, but the scenery is passing me by quite quickly.

I’m probably going around as fast as a bicycle.

Compared to my sisters, I’m the weakest one out of everyone, yet even I can go this fast… An arachne’s physical ability is seriously amazing.

…Oh yeah, I wonder if my human form is still similarly strong.

Hmmm… Let’s check out my powers and skills.

If I’m going to live at a human town, I’ll need to precisely grasp my own strength, or else something bad’s probably going to happen.

My life as an arachne has only begun a month ago, and to be honest I’d always been running for my life from my sisters, so I didn’t have much of a chance to check out my abilities.

I put a bit of strength into my right index finger and activate [Tactile Thread]Sensor Web.

And a length of thread, so thin as to be practically invisible to the eyes, quickly grows out of my index finger. I stick the other end of the thread into my own body.

Immediately, info about myself appears in my brain, looking much like a game’s status window.

______________________________________________

This is a rare skill that I can use instinctively. Of course, I can also use it on other people or on inorganic substances.

It also tells me if there’s poison or not in what I eat, so this is probably the skill that has helped me the most during my one month of wilderness survival.

Seems like the reason the information shows up like a game status window is because the skill tries to match up with my perception. According to my sisters, even when they try to use the same [Tactile Thread]Sensor Web skill, the information they get is a lot rougher and lacking in detail.

…Well, leaving that aside.

What’s this [Class: Dressmaker] thing? … Ah, was it because I made a dress?

Also, I have this [Sewing] and [Weaving]… With these skills, I can probably make my living in the town somehow.

Oh yeah, if I remember correctly, according to Earth’s mythology, Arachne took pride in being able to “weave more skillfully than the gods”, and then was turned into a half-human half-spider monster.

There’s probably a relation with my skills.

“[Evasion Rate Up (Large)] and [Escape Rate Up (Large)] were probably because I kept running away from my sisters all the time. And what’s [Predation]…?”

I don’t really understand how it works, so I tried to focus my attention on [Predation], which created a window showing more details. Ooh, convenient.

Oookay, let’s see…

[When eating creatures with magic inside their bodies, your stats will rise by a certain amount (permanent effect). Furthermore, it’s possible to learn new skills. Eating prey with stronger magic will grant a better chance of raising stats.]

Oooh… This ability totally sounds like a cheat.

So that’s the reason… This is why my sisters are so much stronger than me…

They ate ones of their own race… Cannibalized those arachnes with bodies filled to the brim with magic. Of course they’ll get strong…

Ah, but I also have a little bit of a bonus on my stats from predating.

…Which means those animals I ate weren’t just normal birds and rabbits like I thought, and they’re probably some sort of magical creatures.

Well, if I’m going to live in a human town, then I probably won’t have many chances to eat magical creatures anyway, so ignoring this is fine.

And then… [Regeneration], just as it says in the name, is an ability that heals my wounds as time passes. Looks like I can grow a new arm given enough time.

Indeed a half-spiderArachne. It’s convenient to not have to go to the doctor.

The problem is, how many of my abilities remain when I turn into human form?

“Well, trying it out would be the fastest way… Aaaand there.”

As I chant in my mind “Tuuuurn into a human, tuuuurn into a human…”, my lower body gradually shrinks and turns into a pair of smooth human legs.

Furthermore, the 6 eyes twinkling like rubies on my forehead (I’m a spider, so in total I have 8 eyes!) also sink and disappear inside my body with a *plop*.

“Whoooooaaaaaa… So narrow! Have humans always had such a narrow field of vision? And the legs… Feel kinda unstable…”

Looks like I got way too used to an Arachne’s body after that single month, more than I expected.

“So, my status. [Tactile Thread]Sensor Web… Hmm… So Detect Presence and 4 Strike Combo aren’t usable in a human body. These skills probably depend on my spider eyes and legs, so no way around it, I guess. Other than that… STR and VIT drops from 25 to 18… Wow, it goes down by quite a lot… But well, a human female would be like this, I suppose.”

I keep on mumbling to myself while checking out my status and continue walking in the forest at the same time.

From the viewpoint of a person in my past life, I’m totally a suspicious person right now.

And so, it would take another 10 minutes for me to hear that sound.

“…This is… swords clanging?”

The sound of steel striking steel rings from afar.

There’s not likely to be a blacksmith in the middle of the forest, so it must be a battle between some sort of humanoids.

“Ummm, what do I do… Maybe I should intervene?”

This form of mine doesn’t have claws or any sort of weapons, so if I’m going to intervene, the only thing I can do is to use threads to restrict and tie them up… And it’s not like I know their situation.

For now, I guess I’ll come closer and check out the situation…

“The sound was coming from this direction… Yeaah, it’s hard to walk with my human legs when I’m barefoot… I’ll need to make shoes with my threads later… Gah?!”

While I was walking with such idle thoughts in my mind, suddenly, a brawny arm reaches out from the thicket and grab my neck.

And like that, the arm’s owner pulls me close to their body.

“Boss! There’s even one hidin’ in this place!”

The man who caught me shouted and waved his hand at the direction of the road.

That’s right, a road. I don’t know since when, but I’ve come close to the road passing through the forest.

Still, these guys… Deep voices, the thick smell of meat wafting from their mouths, tattered leather armor, and the shortsword currently pointing straight at my eyes.

Got it, they’re totally some sort of bandits or kidnappers.

And if so, then this ‘Boss’ guy who this man waved at must be the bandit chief, or someone similar.

“Yeah! Good job! A bit of a brat, but guys with that sort of hobby would prolly fork over a bunch for this cutie!”

“P-Please stop! She’s innocent!”

The person who tried to cover for me was a beautiful brown-haired lady wearing some high-quality clothes. She looks to be just over twenty.

Like me, that pretty lady’s right hand is being seized by a large, stocky bandit.

A quick look tells me that… there are around 5 bandits.

Around the woman are three armed men lying on the ground. They must have been her escorts.

“Umm… So I’m just confirming the situation here. You’re some sort of bandits or kidnappers, and right now you’re in the middle of kidnapping that lady over there?”

I need to at least confirm what’s going on here. I’m not really the type to judge people just by their faces.

“Haha… Gwahahahaha! Little lass, you sure got some nerve there! Or perhaps you got too scared and went crazy in the head instead?”

“…Please answer. Am I right?”

“Heheheh… That’s right! We’re the bandit group Doye! Kids wet their pants just from hearing our names! So if you understand who we are, better give up and stay quiet. If you do, I’ll do you a favor and kindly sample you myself… Gahahahaha!”

“Tch, Narjin. Your hobby never changes.”

“Then, ‘dis bitch over here iz mine.”

Instead of the so-called ‘boss’, the guy who captured me generously spilled all the beans, so I got what I wanted to hear.

This means I can retaliate without worries, then.

And so, let’s not waste any time. I let out a string of thread from my fingertip and wrap it around the neck of the man who’s holding me.

“Ack?!”

It looks like he doesn’t understand what just happened. He chokes, his fingers scratching his throat.

In the first place, my threads are so small you can’t see them unless you really squint, but at the same time they’re even stronger than steel wires.

There’s no way you can tear them off with just your bare hands.

Well, if I really want to, I can just slice his head off… But since I don’t want this to turn into a splatter film, I made the thread softer and intentionally blunted its cutting edge.

I constrict his airway and carotid artery, and take his consciousness in one go.

“Agghh… Ugghh…”

*thud*.

I throw the man, his face blue and his mouth filled with frothing bubbles, on the ground, and move towards the remaining four bandits.

“Ah, eh? The fuck are you… Gakh?!”

“*Wheeze, wheeze*”

“I-I khan’t breasss…”

“Shit! You fucker! Eat this!”

Indeed, the boss wasn’t so dumb as to not realize that I’ve done something to take down his men. At the moment I took down the fourth one, the only remaining bandit boss immediately slashed at me from behind with his longsword.

Unsurprisingly, I flew off from the impact of the sword… But it wasn’t as painful as I’d thought.

I casually stand up and turn towards the bandit boss. His face transformed from one of a man sure of his victory into an expression of shock.

“Why…Why weren’t you hurt?! This sword can cut even iron armor!”

The bandit boss shouted in confusion.

No surprises there. In this world, Arachne are considered a rather high-rank type of monsters.

Those like my mother even retaliate against high level adventurers and turn them into food. They’re that strong.

And it looks like clothes made from arachne threads have rather high defense.

But even with that, what I’m wearing is just clothes, so they can’t absorb the force of the blow. I still feel pain to a certain extent.

And so, I decisively punish mister bandit boss by constricting his carotid artery and airway with my thread, sending him to meet his partners.

“Eugh.”

Oh, he fainted… Damn, I had wanted to torture him a bit more before letting him faint.

“Umm, excuse me… Thank you very much! Lady Magician!”

Ah, there was a woman who got kidnapped. I forgot.

“No, no, please don’t mind it.. Also, I’m not a magician, just a humble dressmaker!”

“Miss dressma…ker? Huh?”

She got confused by my introduction. Well, I guess normally, dressmakers don’t go and defeat bandits.

After those bandits, the woman was the next one in line to get dumbfounded.

In order to maintain Mao-chan’s image of me, I was going to work hard at cram school once again.

Next time I was aiming for rank 25. For now I was just taking little steps. But one day…

With renewed determination in my heart I opened my exercise book. It was around that time that Umewaka-kun and his friends arrived.

“Hey Kisshouin-san,” he said, “I just heard but apparently the guy over by the door, second row from the front, is actually from Zui’ran too. Do you know him?”

“Eh?”

This was the first I’d heard of any Zui’ran student going to my cram school. I squinted to get a better look at him but I had no idea who he was.

“I cannot say that I do… I suspect that we have simply never had a class together.”

“Really? But he seems to know you, Kisshouin-san.”

“Truly?”

“I hear he only started coming to this cram school this year. If you’re from the same school, maybe you could talk to him?”

“I suppose I could.”

Since he was from Zui’ran I decided I should at least greet him.
It wasn’t possible now that our teacher had arrived but I could do so during the break.

When that break came around, I walked over to him but when he saw me his expression turned obviously frightened. Eh? How come?

“I have been told that you attend Zui’ran. Might this be true?”

“Ah! Yes…”

Apparently this diligent and somewhat plain-looking boy was named Tagaki-kun, and had entered the high school as an External.

“My name is Kisshouin Reika. May we get along.”

“Yes, I know who you are of course…” he said oddly fearfully.

Come on, is there really a need to be like that?

“What class are you in, Tagaki-kun? Who do you attend Zui’ran with?”

“Ummm… I’m in Enjou-san’s class…”

“Enjou-sama?”

Didn’t that mean he was in the same class as Wakaba-chan?

“Then that would place you with Takamichi-san. Are you close with her?”

“Eh!? No, not particularly…”

“I see. What is she like in class? Does she have friends?”

“Ah… I think she does…”

So she made friends too. Thank goodness. I was worried she would be completely isolated. It made sense though, since it wasn’t like the whole school hated her. Only some people hated her. Some rather troublesome people, though.
Before I returned to my seat, I told him to talk to me if he had any questions since he was attending here alone.

“He was from Zui’ran, right?”

“Yes. But because our classes are different he is honestly little more than a stranger. He seems to know of me, however.”

“What’s this? Kisshouin-san, are you famous at your school?”

“Kisshouin-san stands out after all~”

“Actually,” I explained, “I have been attending Zui’ran since primary school, which is why I am better-known than those who joined later.”

By some chance my eyes passed over Tagaki-kun’s back. Maybe he noticed somehow because he turned around and our eyes met before he quickly turned away. Hmmm~ I wonder how he saw me…

“Oh? Kisshouin-san, could he be scared of you?”

Leave it alone, please.

Later at home I got an email from Bea-tan.

“Do your best! I’m your friend, Reika-tan! Your confidante, Beatrice.”

Thank you, Bea-tan…

On a clear, beautiful morning, I bumped into Enjou at the entrance to the school building.

“Morning, Kisshouin-san.”

“Good morning, Enjou-sama.”

And then for some reason we ended up heading to class together. We passed by a number of girls who stopped to stare at him in a daze.
I was so jealous… I wasn’t even doing anything but pretty much every boy averted his eyes from me in fear…

“What’s wrong, Kisshouin-san?”

“Nothing.”

“I see,” he smiled brightly.

Some of the girls watching on began squealing.

“Are you not with Kaburagi-sama on this morning?”

“Well it’s not like we go to school together. Wait, don’t tell me you think that each morning we happily ride the same car here? Wouldn’t that be pretty creepy for two high school boys? We go to school at the same time, so I guess we bump into each other a lot.”

“My, is that how it was?”

But I’ve seen you two get out of the same car a few times, yanno.

Maybe he noticed something from my expression because he added,

“Speaking of which, there actually was a period when I went to pick him up. I couldn’t really take my eyes off him at the time. I still have to thank you for your help back then.”

Enjou flashed another smile.

…Back then, huh.

“It was thanks to you risking life and limb that we somehow got Masaya to cheer up. Thanks again.”

“You are welcome…”

The way he worded that particularly annoyed me. So he was the one who made me out to be a reject woman!

“And it looks like my brother has been in your care too. The other day he brought home this toy that he said you taught him to make.”

“Oh, the snow rabbit!”

Yukino-kun. He was a pure-white little angel-chan, unlike his wicked black-hearted older brother. I prayed that he wouldn’t be led astray by Enjou’s evil influence.

“So it’s called needle felting. I had no idea you had that kind of hobby. My brother was quite happy about it.”

“I see. Then it makes me happy that he enjoyed it.”

I thought back on his innocent smile and couldn’t help but smile myself.

“It seems that the snow rabbit had special importance to him. He told me about how you and Kaburagi-sama built snowmen for him. You really spoil him, Enjou-sama.”

“Well, we’ve got quite an age difference after all. And he hasn’t got the best constitution either. Doesn’t your own brother spoil you quite a bit too? Why according to the rumours, you’re practically a brocon, Kisshouin-san. Although lately it’s been leaning towards fathercon instead.”

Tanuki!

“It is certainly true that my brother and I have always been close, but I have not the faintest idea how the accusations of being a fathercon came about.”

“Ohh? I see.”

Enjou gave an amused smile.

Still under the gaze of other girls, we walked together as far as the front of his classroom, before he stopped at the door-frame.

“Oh, by the way,” he muttered, “Is it because you love your much older brother so much that your taste is also for older men?”

“Eh?”

Enjou grinned at me and then headed inside.
…Scary. Who was he talking about just now?

Feeling gloomy despite the nice weather, I headed for my own classroom when a small racket caught my attention. It was an excited-looking Nonose-san and Miharu-chan.

“I told you that the chamberlain wasn’t suited for the princess! A princess needs a prince!”

“But I was rooting for the chamberlain.”

“Why not console him?”

Whatever it was, they seemed to be having fun chatting about it.

Nonose-san and Miharu-chan went and called out to Class Rep. He seemed delighted that Miharu-chan was coming over to talk to him.

As for me, Ru’ne-chan and the others mobbed me and asked what Enjou and I were chatting to happily about.

Normally I had lunch with Serika-chan and the others. Today was an exception to that.

At the behest of the President of the Pivoine, every member was currently assembled in the cafeteria together.

“It’s nice having lunch to strengthen the bonds within the Pivoine once in a while,” she said, “And to begin with, these seats were arranged for our exclusive use, so I think this is the best place for us anyhow.”

The Pivoine elitists nodded at her words. The President seemed to be in a good mood.

Ah, it would have been nicer to eat with my friends though… If possible I’d rather not become the leader of yet another village.

Unfortunately I wanted to avoid drama, so here I was, giving her words a vague smile as I ate my lunch. Enjou and Kaburagi usually ate here anyway. Despite the crowd today, they seemed to be ignoring it all and talking about sports.

“I knew it would be calming to spend time with proper students of Zui’ran. Ever since entering high school there have been so many outsiders unaccustomed to our ways.”

“I know how you feel. It’d be nice if they’d stop harming our image,” chimed in one of the boys.

“How are the new first years?”

“It’s still too early to tell, but at least nobody has stirred anything up yet.”

“I see. If anything happens, as a Pivoine you should teach them their proper place.”

“I understand. We won’t let them do as they wish in our school.”

“It’s fine that they admire Zui’ran and all, but overreaching their stations will bring them more trouble than anybody else.”

Wow…

Usually I just treated the Pivoine as a nice place to eat snacks in, but there were a lot more elitists than I had expected… Some of them were extraordinarily proud about being a member of the Pivoine.

No wonder they got along so badly with the Student Council.

At least last year they had Tomoe-senpai to even things out, but…

“By the way, there’s actually a 2nd year causing problems…”

Called it.

“Ah. That Takamichi girl?”

“Yes,” answered a girl, “When I saw her wearing gumboots with our uniform I felt faint…”

“That was certainly astounding. How could anybody have so little sense…”

“I know, right?” agreed another boy, “I can’t believe the way she shamed us in public. This is how we’re representing ourselves outside?”

“And the other day I saw her jumping along down the hallway,” added yet another girl. “She’s so barbaric that just seeing her irritates me.”

“Doesn’t she come to school with bedhair at times? Does she not even know how to take care of her own appearance?” asked somebody else.

“Saw her running to the train station too, you know? It was so disgraceful that I very nearly got out of my car to tell her off.”

“Heavens… At any rate, we can all agree that she doesn’t belong in Zui’ran. To begin with, who knows if those grades are her own ability…”

“Beating Kaburagi-sama and Enjou-sama…? How could that ever happen…”

With that, the conversation shifted to complaints about how she was basically tarnishing the two’s reputation.

Honestly, I didn’t know what they were clamouring about. What were they even expecting? For Wakaba-chan to lower her marks on purpose? She was a scholarship student.

If they really had problems with this then they should have just told Kaburagi and Enjou to study harder. Just kidding. Of course nobody could do that. But still, it would have been a lot more constructive than all of this grumbling.

Also I’m pretty sure the jumping in the hallway was because people were trying to trip her. And why were we even complaining about her hair or gumboots or running? Were we her mother-in-laws or something?

“At any rate, that girl needs to be watched. Those of us in 2nd year need to pay special attention to her. Reika-sama.”

“…Eh!?”

I was supposed to be in invisible-mode so why did my name get called?

“I hope you’ll cooperate with us on this matter as well. Please purge the undesirables.”

Please what?

Her choice of words was so scary that it was all I could do to smile.

I looked around the table for help, but Sarara-sama was already in her own little book-world having already finished lunch. Fuyuko-sama in the same group was just smiling leisurely as always. Enjou and Kaburagi who were the cause of all this were still chatting happily amongst themselves…

Uu, purge? Am I Catherine de Médicis? I don’t have it in me to send Wakaba-chan a poisoned glove… I’m just a Rococo Queen. Oh, but the Rococo Queen’s beloved macarons were introduced by Catherine de Médicis weren’t they? O great macaron bringer, I pay my thanks to thee.

I think I’ll buy some on the way home.

*

*

Exhausted from that lunch with the Pivoine, I was on the way back to my classroom when I spotted Wakaba-chan.

She was tottering along with a heavy-looking pile of exercise books. Maybe somebody had pushed the job onto her.

There were a number of people walking nearby, but none of them offered any help, either… What happened to being raised as gentleman here!

That was when Fellow Stalking Horse ran over and took half of the pile from her.

“I’ll help.”

“Eh? But we’re in different classes.”

“It’s fine. So we’re bringing these to the staff room?”

“No, to a faculty room, but…”

“Okay.”

Stalking Horse began walking briskly away. Recovering from her surprise, Wakaba-chan quickly followed after him.

Ooh! It was good to see Fellow Stalking Horse doing a proper job of the Stalking Horse thing. Well done, Comrade. I expected no less from a righteous Stalking Horse like you.

Unfortunately some of the girls who saw this were muttering loathingly about ‘cosying up to boys’.

I wonder if she’s going to be okay over the next two years.

*

*

Feeling even more exhausted, I headed to the Petite Pivoine for some soothing.

It was arranged that I would help Mao-chan with her studies. She was in 2nd grade, so it was obviously no problem.

Once I arrived she and Yuuri-kun welcomed me in with a smile. So cute.

The two of them began working on their arithmetic homework. While they were doing that I pulled out my needle felting work and began poking away.

“What’s that?”

I looked up to find that it was Yukino-kun the angel looking on in interest.

“This is needle felting, a method of creating shapes made from thread using a needle.”

“Oh, that seems fun…”

Since he seemed pretty enthused, I considered letting him try.

I asked him as much and he nodded with a resplendent smile before sitting down next to me and going at it.

“Try making a circle first.”

“Okay.”

With just a little guidance, Yukino-kun was getting better and better at it. Maybe he was just good with his fingers.
Maybe the obsession that boys had with things actually made them pretty suited for handicrafts. Oh, speaking of which we had a new 1st year boy join. Even though he was new and a boy, he was without doubt way above my level.

“It’s done!”

His completed work was a white hemisphere with green ears and red eyes.

…A rabbit?

“Is this a rabbit?”

“Yes. It’s a snow rabbit. I’m not very healthy so when I was smaller I couldn’t play in the snow. That’s why Niisama made snow rabbits to give to me.”

“I see.”

Who would have thought that villain had done something so cute!

“Niisama and Masaya-niisama used to make snowmen that I could see from my window. Masaya-niisama said that snowmen always had to wear red buckets, so he went and bought small buckets just for that.”

Kaburagi!? And to think that he had weird fixations for his snowmen too…

“You get along very well with your Oniisama then?”

“Yes,” he smiled bashfully, “Can I keep this rabbit? I want to show it to Niisama.”

Cuuuute!

Somehow I had just a tiny bit better opinion of Enjou and Kaburagi now…

“It seems that recently a certain 2nd year has been getting ahead of herself,” began the President of the Pivoine.

*

*

*

After Wakaba-chan made 1st place, the way certain students treated her became noticeably more harsh.

I thought it was completely pointless, seeing as she made it there through ability. I hoped that I could make 1st place one day. First place… How nice…

No, even just the Top 5 would be great…

No, even 10th place… If I ever made 10th I’d be so besides myself with joy that I’d break into a belly dance.

Getting back to the point though, Kaburagi and Enjou were considered the pride of the more ‘pure bred’ Zui’ran students. That Wakaba-chan had threatened their places even as far back as 1st year was something many of them couldn’t endure.

Plenty of other External Students did really well too, but Wakaba-chan was probably targeted because of her appearance. She looked like a total commoner. Not only that but sometimes she’d stare into space with her mouth hanging, like some kind of simpleton.

Thanks to that, plenty of people made comments like,

That’s supposed to be who beat them?”

“Are you sure she didn’t cheat?”

And the fact that she was a girl that Enjou and Kaburagi spoke to made everything even worse. And Enjou was one thing, but Kaburagi almost never spoke to girls. For him to speak to her of his own volition stirred up some incredible jealousy.

Some of the girls in my group weren’t too fond of her either.

Actually, sometimes they’d give me weird encouragements like, “Do your best, Reika-sama!”. What exactly was I supposed to be doing my best in?

And you know, I did do my best for the mid-terms but even now none of them had noticed.

Next to the great 3-way struggle between ‘Takamichi’, ‘Kaburagi’ and ‘Enjou’, nobody had any attention to spare on the story of ‘Kisshouin Reika, 29th place’. In the end the rankings notice was taken down without anybody noticing…

*

*

I tried so hard but nobody even praised me. Nobody noticed. That was so sad…

Which is why I decided to plan a little farce for myself.

I made sure to time it so that my results were casually lying around the living room when Oniisama came home. Of course, just having it lying around on its own was a little too obvious, so I made sure to have exercise printouts and stationery and textbooks and stuff as well. I was totally just looking through my bag for something when my results just happened to fall out.

Oh? That’s weird. Oniisama wasn’t home yet?

In the end I was forced to put the stationery back into my bag and wait. I took it out again.

…He wasn’t coming.

I put it back in. Then took it all out.

After repeating this again and again, Oniisama finally appeared.

“Welcome home, Oniisama!”

“I’m back. What’s all this on the table, Reika?”

“I was simply looking for something…”

I rustled my hand in my more-or-less empty bag. Oniisama! Look! Your little sister’s grades are right there!

To stall for time, I took out the contents of my pencilcase one by one.

Oniisama! Right there! Right in front of you!

“Hm? Oh, are these your grades?”

Oniisama finally noticed and picked it up.

“Goodness~ Oniisama! Stop! How embarrassing~”

Oh my~ With my bag in my hands, I was completely unable to stop Oniisama from picking it up~

“Wow! You made it to 29th place this time. You really did your best, Reika!”

“Ehh~ You exaggerate~”

“29th place in high school means your name was put up, right? You’re amazing. After trying so hard, I think you deserve a present, don’t you?”

“Ehh~ 29th place is nothing so deserving~”

“I don’t think that’s true. It’s a reward for all your effort.”

With that, Oniisama smiled and stroked my head.

Oniisamaaa~!!

I really did my best, you know? But nobody noticed.

…Hahh, it finally, finally paid off.

Ichinokura-san brought me out to eat in celebration of the end of exams. This time Mao-chan was absent.

We were going to be eating at an Italian place he recommended. Not one of the fancy expensive places, but like a small trattoria.

The moment we stepped inside, I could already smell the scent of roasted garlic.

I went with a bolognaise pasta.

On the other hand, Ichinokura-san decided on a pescatore.

We were also ordering a pizza margherita.

“You’ll have the bruschetta, obviously.”

“Well, yes.”

“Maybe we should get some salad too. What kind of salad do you like, Reika-san?”

“Caprese salad would be nice.”

“Then we’ll get that. Ah, but won’t that be a bit too much tomato? I’ll change my pasta order then. What should I get…”

I used to worry about whether or not to keep faking my eating habits, but ever since that night with the kamameshi I stopped with all pretences.

Ichinokura-san said that it was more fun to dine out with people who could eat a lot anyhow.

The food came one after another, so much that it felt like I was at an eating competition. Bring it all out!

Yummmyyy! The bolognaise was delicious. And the flat pasta was just the best! And the cheese on the margherita just stretched out!

Actually, god, why were Italian tomato dishes all so delicious? Apparently tomatoes were good for burning fat too. Delicious and good for dieting? It was too good for words!

Even I was full after all of that. But I ordered some tiramisu for dessert.

When Ichinokura-san asked me how my exams went, I modestly told him that they were acceptable.

“Mao tells me that you’re quite impressive at school.”

“She misunderstands. I think she overestimates me.”

“I hope you’ll help her with her studies too.”

Uhuhu, leave it to me. I, rank 29th Kisshouin Reika, can do primary school homework with my eyes closed.

When it was time to leave, Ichinokura-san bought some sweets to take back to Mao-chan since she couldn’t come today. That’s why I asked to pay for that instead. After being treated to so many meals, I wanted to at least do this. And I ate quite a bit, too…

I eventually convinced him. When I went to pay at the register though, I spotted some amaretti so I bought it to bring home for myself.

“Thank you for the sweets. I’ll make sure to tell Mao that it was from you.”

“Thank you for always treating me. Today’s food was just delicious. The caprese salad was one of the best three I have ever had.”

“Really? I’m glad you enjoyed it so much. That place is really picky about tomatos.”

“No wonder it was so delicious then. But the cheese was wonderful too.”

“The cheese? Then how about I take you to a risotto place next time? There’s this blue cheese risotto you just have to try.”

“Risotto!? I love risotto.”

“Then that settles it.”

*

When I returned home from a great dinner with Ichinokura-san, I saw Oniisama reading a travel magazine. Was he planning on going somewhere?

I entered my room and then had just one of the amaretti. Yummy…

Tsuruhana-san’s group tried to trip Wakaba-chan in the hallway, but Wakaba-chan vaulted over each one like an athlete doing hurdles.

And in her gym class, only Wakaba-chan was forced to play dodgeball during a basketball game…

I was starting to worry about her a little, but she still seemed totally unaffected, so I hoped she could get through this.

As bad as I felt about it, if the President of the Pivoine really had it out for her, there wasn’t much I could do.

Tsk. I was shifting responsibilities now, but what the heck was Kaburagi doing.

What happened to his destiny?

By Mao-chan’s request, we were going to eat pancakes.
I’d wondered this before, but weren’t pancakes more of a snack?

The menu was filled with pictures of whipped cream towers.

I couldn’t understand how Hawaiians could eat pancakes as a staple. Wouldn’t you get heartburn eating this for breakfast? Was it just a matter of getting used to it?

Still, I was pretty excited for it. I went with a chocolate, banana and whipped cream.

Mao-chan went with strawberry, while Ichinokura-san went with fruit pancakes with no cream.

“Wahh! It looks so yummy!”

Her eyes seemed to sparkle as our orders were carried to us. They were bigger than expected.

“Yours looks yummy too, Reika-oneesama!”

“Want to try some?”

“Can I!? Then please eat some of mine!”

And that’s how we happily split our orders. The chocolate banana pancakes were delicious! I liked chocolate and bananas with my crepes too, incidentally. Still wasn’t entirely sure how I felt about eating these sweet foods for dinner, but as a snack they were the best.

I wondered how on earth they cooked these so neatly though. In my old life the batter was always really thick, and I’d use a lot of it because I wanted my pancakes to turn out thick like in the pictures. The thickness worked of course, but they were always shaped more like weird pillows instead. And they were huge. And undercooked. On the inside at least, because the outside was always burned…
I doubted that anybody could really make such nice pancakes at home. It was probably impossible. Most likely those photos were faked.

Wah! Mao-chan’s strawberry and powdered sugar pancakes were delicious too!

“Would you like some chocolate banana pancakes, Ichinokura-sama? They are delicious, you know?”

“Try some of my strawberry too, Haruto-niisama!”

“Mmmm~ I think I’m good.”

Oh? He didn’t seem as enthused about our pancakes as he was about my kamameshi.

“Are you perhaps not so fond of sweet foods, Ichinokura-sama?”

“No, no, I am. It’s just that the cream looks a little overwhelming,” he said with a difficult smile.

I could kind of understand.

“Haruto-niisama, did you not want pancakes?”

Mao-chan looked a little sad. Ichinokura-san flew into a bit of a panic to reassure her.

“No, I did, Mao. Maybe I will try some of yours.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

He cut off a bit of her pancakes.

“Mn, delicious. Thank you, Mao.”

“You’re welcome. You can have more, you know?”

“But then there’d be less for you. I’ve got my own. Actually, you should try some of mine. Want a little?”

“Yeah!”

Mao-chan stuffed her cheeks with the fruit-laden pancake.

“Yummy! Ah, but I took too much of your fruit. I’m sorry. You can have some of my cream instead!” she said, before piling a mountain of cream onto his food.

Mao-chan…

“I really love you and Reika-neesama so I’m really happy that we came here.”

Mao-chan, what adorable things you say!

Ichinokura-san was smiling too.

“It looks like Mao adores you, Reika-san.”

“Mn. Reika-neesama is pretty and nice and smart, you know. She’s amazing.”

Mao-chan, I think you’re overestimating me a little…

“I am glad that you think so highly of me, but I am nowhere near so special. For one thing I am not very smart…”

“That’s not true! Sensei says that you had really good grades! And that you took the initiative to lead the class too.”

“Sensei?”

Apparently her current home room teacher was the one who pushed me into being a member of the executive committee for the athletics meet as well as being class rep. When exactly did I take the initiative.

“Sensei said that you were reliable and smart when you were younger too. As expected of you, Reika-oneesama!”

“Umm, Mao-chan…”

“Ohh? You’re actually quite amazing, Reika-san.”

“She is! I want to be like Reika-oneesama too!”

“I see. Then you’ll have to study, Mao.”

“Yes!”

“…”

My primary school self was being incredibly glorified in Mao-chan’s mind. I’d better study like hell for the mid-terms…

“Speaking of which, Yukino-kun said you were nice too, Reika-oneesama.”

“Eh, Yukino-kun did!?”

That little Angel-chan said I was nice!?

“Yukino-kun is really popular, you know? He’s like a little prince, so even people from middle or high school come to see him. But his body isn’t strong so the Pivoine told us to look after him.”

“I see.”

I did recall Enjou doing something like that.

“Is this Yukino-kun that cool?”

Ichinokura-san sounded interested now. Your cream isn’t decreasing at all, you know…

“He’s more cute than cool. Right, Reika-oneesama?”

“Yes.”

“We all say he’s like an angel.”

Aha. I knew everybody thought that too. He really was an angel.
I nodded along in assent.

“An angel. I think I’d like to meet him once too.”

“And Yukino-kun’s oniisama is dreamy too. One time he came to the salon to pick up Yukino-kun and he smiled at us and asked us to take care of Yukino-kun! All of the oneesamas in the high grades were in love. He was like a prince.”

“That sounds kinda amazing.”

Prince? Enjou a prince!? Noooo! My cute little Mao-chan is being deceived!

“And the Prince had a really cool friend too. Reika-oneesama, you’re in their year aren’t you?”

“Ahhh, well…”

“How nice. You must be close, right? Yukino-kun was happy since it seemed like you and his brother got along.”

“Eh!?”

Yukino-kun, I’m sorry but that’s a huge misunderstanding! Actually was this my fault~?
Oh no! What if Enjou started thinking like, ‘Wow. What is this woman doing claiming that we’re close to my little brother’!?

Besides Mao-chan who was smiling innocently, I could feel my stomach dropping.

*

*

*

I learned at that dinner that Mao-chan had somehow misunderstood me to be some kind of superwoman with brains as well as beauty. Since I didn’t want to disappoint her, I studied extra hard. I even started seeing my notes in my dreams.

After drinking two energy drinks at once night after night, I made it into the ranking board for the first time. 29th place.

After all of that study, and I was only 29th… That was barely on it. No, but I really did try!

Still, everybody was focused on what was written on 1st place.

1. Takamichi Wakaba
2. Kaburagi Masaya
3. Enjou Shuusuke
4. Mizusaki Arima

So Wakaba-chan had finally overtaken both Kaburagi and Enjou to take first place──

The last time she had taken first it was because the Emperor was heartbroken. This time was different though. She beat him out with pure ability.

These were the first test results since entering 2nd year. The people around me seemed disquieted.

Kaburagi and Enjou came along. After looking at the board, Kaburagi raised an eyebrow.

“…Shuusuke, this Takamichi Wakaba was in your class, right?”

“Yep. She’s a girl with a lot of energy.”

“Hmmm~”

“Ah, speak of the devil. Takamichi-san, congratulations on 1st place.”

With bad timing, Wakaba-chan had come along right that moment.

“Eh-, 1st!? Th-… Thank you very much…”

Wakaba-chan was a lot more hesitant this time. Somebody must have given her quite the verbal lashing last time.

“So you’re Takamichi?”

“Eh- Yes…”

Wakaba-chan shrank further under his gaze.
After staring at her silently for a while, he simply went back.

“Bye then,” waved Enjou, before following after.

Wakaba-chan was left sitting on a bed of nails…

*

*

Ummmm~ By the way, I made it onto the ranking boards for the first time since getting into high school. Did anybody notice?
It’s right there you know? Kisshouin Reika, right next to the ’29’~

Not only did I have another food outing with Ichinokura-san, we were going to bring Mao-chan this time.

He spoke about her last time. Apparently she was about to become an older sister.
Her grandparents and relatives were all ecstatic about a Sawarabi heir being born. So ecstatic that they kept saying careless things in front of her like,

“We finally have a boy!”

or

“I didn’t know what we would do if it was a girl again.”

Not that they meant to hurt her, but they did all the same.

Since all anyone was talking about was her brother, Mao-chan was in a sulking mood.

Both Ichinokura-san and her parents were quite worried for her.

I guess that was why Mao-chan’s mum made all of the food for her birthday. Even for a hobby that had been an incredible amount of effort. I guess that was her way of telling her daughter that she treasured her. Mao-chan seemed really happy to eat her mum’s food too.

Life was pretty harsh for an eight-year-old though… I hadn’t noticed at all.

In my old life I had a younger sister but no brothers. In this life I had Oniisama. Not once had I ever been told that they wished I hadn’t been born a girl though. If it happened now I would only feel annoyed, but it must have been a shock to somebody Mao-chan’s age.

Ichinokura-san told me that he wanted to prioritise her to make up for all of the relatives who put her younger brother first.

“Mao really idolises you, Reika-san. That night after the summer party where she met you she told us all about how she met a wonderful oneesama. You took photos of her and Yuuri-kun and gave her the framed photo as a present, didn’t you? Mao was overjoyed.

“You started to pop up in her conversations. She told me about how well you treated her. I think she was just happy that somebody was willing to pay attention to her instead of her brother.

“I’m sorry if this seems shameless, but as the oneesama she adores, I hope you can spare her just a little attention. I don’t want her to be lonely… Please.”

Ichinokura-san lowered his head to me.

I accepted without thought. Mao-chan was adorable and I loved her, so I would have done it anyhow. The bow was actually making me uncomfortable. I wasn’t spending time with Mao as some favour to him. I was doing it because I wanted to. Actually, wasn’t Ichinokura-san underestimating Mao-chan’s cuteness?

When I told him as much he broke into a wide grin.

We segued into scheduling the dinner with Mao-chan instead, and promised to contact each other once we had a better idea of when we were all free. Later I heard from him that Mao-chan had been ecstatic at the idea. Apparently it took him quite a lot of effort to calm her down from trying to go right that minute.

Dinner with Mao-chan and Ichinokura-san… I was really looking forward to it.

There was going to be no student performance during the 2nd year class trip. I relayed the information to Dite who visible deflated. Why didn’t this guy go to a music school, anyway…

We were going to be staying at Nikkou City, in Tochigi.

Nikkou city in Tochigi. Its mountains, forests and hot springs make it a popular tourist destination. Despite being only an hour or two away from Tokyo, its height above sea level makes it rather cold.

Since we were high schoolers and all, I was wondering why they chose somewhere so close. As it turns out, they also had a popular hiking course. Considering we were supposed to be a school for pampered rich kids we sure did go through some really athletic excursions. According to the rumours this hike was going to be way tougher than last year’s so I was honestly kind of worried.

My other worry was that Kegon Falls was also in Nikkou, so would Kaburagi really be okay? It hadn’t even been a year since I got that shortbread from Enjou.

I just hoped that this trip wouldn’t reopen his wounds. I could expect a lot of trouble if it did.

*

*

We gathered early in the morning on the day of the trip. Sleepy…
In consideration of the hiking course, I drank one of the slightly more expensive energy drinks before I left the house. I could only hope that it would work.

When we began, I made sure to take small steps, but it was as bad as I had imagined. It felt like I had been walking forever.
Fuyuko-sama and the others had given up early on. Uuu, I wanted to as well. But how could I as a class rep! I was at the end of the line though, so it’s not like I was actually helping though! I didn’t expect I would be much use by the end of this, so I asked Nonose-san to organise our class once we reached the goal.

“Just take it easy, okay?” Ru’ne-chan encouraged me, as I lagged slowly behind the majority.

Looking around, it was the same group as always.

When we finally reached the goal, everyone was, as usual, already having lunch. Shouldn’t they have waited for us to show class spirit or something? I was feeling a little resentful as usual.

Exhausted, by the time I had begun with my own obentou some of the other students were already done. Wakaba-chan was amongst them.
She was strolling around the place, looking at flowers here and there. It was nice that she had energy.

Suddenly, Enjou came and talked to her. Eh!?
I couldn’t hear what they were saying, but I saw her smile and nod along with him. When did they get so close!? And Kaburagi was noticeably absent.
Since I was looking their way, some of the girls around me noticed as well.

“Who’s that girl speaking with Enjou-sama?”

“That scholarship student, Takamichi-san, I think. Remember? The one always on the ranking board?”

“Why is she being so intimate with Enjou-sama!?”

Oh dear. I caused a minor uproar. Before I could try to distract them, Wakaba-chan and Enjou split up. …Thank goodness.

This time it was somebody who approached Enjou. The No. 2 in Tsuruhana-san’s group sidled up to him first, which was the cue for a lot of other girls to copy her. No. 2 was glaring at Wakaba-chan’s back from afar.

*

In the afternoon we got on the coach and headed to Kegon Falls.

Kegon Falls is a scenic and popular tourist destination, located in a national park in Nikkou.

Naturally, considering how famous it was.
So this was the waterfall that Kaburagi visisted in the winter… The temperature had gone a bit further than ‘refreshing’ into ‘cold’. I wasn’t surprised that Kaburagi caught a cold coming here in the dead of winter.

I found myself looking for Kaburagi in the crowd. He was staring into the water at the base of the waterfall. Ah… Did his wounds reopen?
Enjou was glued to his side, holding his arm. Mn, he was a good friend…

When it was time to leave, Kaburagi didn’t seem to respond. He must have been thinking about something. Scary.
In the end Enjou had to pull him away. I wonder if Enjou had to do the same thing back during Kaburagi’s journey…

When we returned to the bus, Wakaba-chan showed Enjou a souvenir bag.

“Thank you for recommending these!”

‘Kegon Falls Shortbread’ it read.

“That souvenir…” muttered Kaburagi as he stared from the side.

Enjou smiled.

“I never tried them myself, but I gave them to somebody who told me they were great.”

At the next place we visited, No. 2 bumped into Wakaba-chan on purpose.

Since I missed last weekend’s Tilea update.

Somehow what would ordinarily be a horrifying scene has turned into a a hilarious farce because it’s “the evil magistrate and the helpless maiden” but instead of the maiden you have the all-powerful Evil God. The pair in question have no idea of course, but plenty of onlookers do.

20 – Battle Against Gordon the Fiend

Gordon leered my way like a hawk that had found its prey.

Oh no, ohh no. I had to hide!

I immediately moved myself behind somebody else. Gordon had met my eyes earlier but it was only for a moment.

Maybe he wouldn’t find me…

I hadn’t had much hope, but I still tried my best to hide. Unfortunately he was heading directly for me.

Not long after…

The footsteps stopped.

Gordon was standing right in front of me.

“Ku ku! Fool girl! Did you really think you could hide from me!?” he laughed in amusement.

O-Oh crap. What now?

As long as he didn’t remember my face I was clear. Even though I didn’t think it would amount to anything, I kept looking downwards.

“Come, girl. Show me your face!”

“…”

“Girl! Hurry up and show Gordon-sama your damned face!”

I guess one of his lackeys was offended by my lack of reaction because he grabbed me by the hair and forced my head upwards.

Kuh! Keep your dirty hands away from a girl’s hair!

“Hohh! I had begun to believe that this city was nothing but homely wenches, but here you are!”

A lustful smile spread across Gordon’s face as he ran his gaze over my body. Uu, this is disgusting.

“Gordon-sama. It seems like today wasn’t a waste after all.”

“Indeed. I suppose we mustn’t underestimate the Capital. Just as I was lamenting the choice of women, this fine prize came along,” spoke Gordon contentedly, holding my chin in his fingers.

I was in some deep shit now.

At this rate I was going to end up like Sammy-chan.

Although I was seething inside, my only choice was to demean myself and ask for forgiveness.

“I-If I offended you, please accept my apologies. P-, Please have mercy…”

“I think, no. A lowly commoner like you slandered a Duke like me. It would be extremely ordinary for you to go to the execution block for that, but in light of your beauty I will make an exception and forgive me. Show some gratitude.”

“G-, Gratitude…?”

“Gratitude. Because not only am I especially pardoning you, you now have the honour of serving me as my sex slave.”

“I-, I’m afraid I must decline.”

“Oh? If you’d prefer we can still slay you on the spot.”

“Eek!? No thank you. P-, Please don’t do that.

“It appears that we have settled on ‘sex slave’. I’ll have you serve me morning, noon and night.”

“Uu, uu,”

“Still dissatisfied? Then perhaps I’ll have your family take responsibility in your stead. Your parents and siblings can all hang for you.”

“P-Please stop! My family hasn’t done anything!”

“Ku ku! You should prepare yourself. You never had a choice to begin with.”

“H-, How could you…”

I fell to my knees in despair.

“Aahh~ And you had better not kill yourself like the girl from the day before. I would be most unhappy if you died while I was having my fun.”

“S-, Sammy-chan…”

“Oh, that was her name. Ku ku, she had a wonderful scream. I’m expecting a lot from you too.”

“Kihihi, Gordon-sama, that really was a masterpiece. Remember the look on her fiancé’s face as he lay next to her?”

“Kuahahahah! Don’t remind me! You’re killing me, man!”

The men around me all began to guffaw again. None of them felt a shred of guilt about driving a girl to suicide.

W-What unbelievable bastards. And they fucking stank. Even the civilians around us were frowning.

“Now then. Let’s hurry back to my estate so I can have you serve me, girl.”

Apparently having had his fill of laughter, Gordon grabbed my wrist with a grin and pulled me along with his rough hand.

Disgusting. Disgusting. Disgusting.

“P-, Please wait. I’m Remilia-san’s friend, you know!”

Remilia-san was like the natural enemy of villains like these. Not only was she the Captain of the Public Safety Force but she was also the descendant of a Hero. There was no way they wouldn’t know her.

Fiend! If you get too carried away don’t blame me when my friend Remilia-san comes to punish you!

I faced Gorgon head-on with a triumphant expression. He let go, so at least it had some effect.

Soon his face warped into another smirk though…

Remilia’s friend? You’re lying!

His lackeys began screaming angrily as well.

“Stop lying!”

“If you spout anymore bullshit we’ll kill you!”

Hmph. Lie? They could act tough all they wanted. Once Remilia-san heard about this, it was all over for them.

Ah!? But unless these idiots believed me they wouldn’t let me go.

“It’s true,” said Millie-san. “Tilea-chan is Remilia-sama’s friend. I’ve seen them chatting quite a few times. Sometimes the two of them eat out together too.”

Ooh, thank you Millie-san. She risked being targeted by the Fiend just to save me. I’m so happy. She really was a great person.

“Shut up, hag! You think we’ll believe you? You’re clearly lying for this girl!”

“I-It’s no lie. If you keep doing things like this Remilia-sama will arrest you.”

“What was that, you hag!?”

Things started to descend into an argument as the other onwatchers used this as a chance to complain as well.

Was the public on my side then…?

But despite the mention of Remilia-san, Gordon was unperturbed. In fact he was still smirking complacently at me.

“Ku ku. Let’s say that you really are her friend, so what?”

“Eh?”

“Nobody but the higher ups know, but Remilia is set for execution.”

“Why!?” I shouted.

Why? Why? Why was Remilia-san going to be executed!

“Why wouldn’t she be! The Capital was half-destroyed in that last attack by the demons. If the Captain of the Public Safety Force doesn’t take responsibility then who will.”

“B-But, lots of people were saved thanks to Remilia-san.”

“And so what. Out of all the Public Security Force members, only that coward is left alive. Brazenly surviving while her men died!”

“Remilia-san is the Royal Family’s greatest servant!”

“Greatest!? Reality proved that she was an incompetent, no match at all for the demons. Remilia herself admitted as such.”

“B-But… That’s so unfair.”

“Ku ku, how about you stop worrying about Remilia and start worrying about yourself?” he sneered.

Uu. Scary. How did I end up targeted by the legendary Fiend…

“Uuu…”

“Too scared to talk, now? I think I’ll make sure to thoroughly teach you what happens when you defy me.”

“He he, what are you going to do, Gordon-sama?”

“What indeed. I think I’ll start with a little training once we reach the mansion. Take her away!”

“S-Stop――”

“Please wait, Gordon-sama.”

Gordon stopped.

“What is it, Nyger?” he asked.

“Members of the Public Safety Force are headed this way.”

“Tsk. The squad that didn’t take my bribes then.”

“Yes sir. The so-called ‘Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons’.”

Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons!?

Isn’t that the committee that I attend meetings for every month!?

Thank goodness. Remilia-san’s comrades. I’m saved.

I let out a sigh of relief.

A few minutes later a few squads of cavalry arrived.

Among them I recognised Raiden Jaft-san and Mose Denper-san from the meetings. So glad. Raiden-san always seemed surly to me, but in situations like this he felt so reliable.

“Settle down, please,” yelled Denper-san from horseback.

Ohh! For somebody with his build he was shockingly imposing. That was an elite of the Sorcerers Regiment for you.

“And who in the hell do you think you’re speaking to!” replied Gordon.

“You may be a Duke, but those who disrupt the peace will punished without exemption!” Denper-san said.

“Fuck off, boy! Gordon-sama, let’s take them down,” said a lackey.

“Indeed. Then kill――”

“I believe we should retreat for now, Gordon-sama.”

“Nyger? And why?”

“We have the advantage in numbers, but the terrain favours cavalry. If we do battle we will suffer.”

“Hmph. If that’s your advice Nyger, then I shall retreat. Come, men. We leave.”

“”Sir!””

Gordon and his followers began to walk off. But along the way, Gordon turned around and spoke.

“After Remilia’s execution, it shall be your turn next,” he spat, “I will see every one of you hang.”

Haha… I managed to protect my chastity…

“Are you all right, Tilea-chan?” Denper-san asked gently.

“I am. Thank you very much, Denper-san.”

“That was some terrible luck. Were you hurt at all?”

“No, I’m fine, thank you.”

Speaking with him warmed my heart.

At first I had been wracked with guilt and stomach pains after attending the meetings, but I’m glad I did now. Honestly, truly glad. Because I attended I got to know so many kind people.

Oh, that’s right. I needed to ask about Remilia-san…

“U-Um, about what Gordon said about Remilia-san’s execution. Is it true?”

“Unfortunately it is.”

“T-, That can’t be…”

“We lost. Gordon has been waiting all this time for revenge against the Royal Family. Not long ago he seized royal authority and used it to arrest Remilia-sama.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Mmn. We’ve been busy preparing for war against the Manafint Confederation so we were careless against internal enemies. That’s probably how he wormed his way in.”

“Wha-!? We’re going to war!?”

“We are. His Majesty was never the kind of fool to do something like this though.”

“What do you mean?”

“Starting a war with another country. Even if he was preparing for war, he wasn’t so incompetent as to lose control of his own government.”

Mmm… I guess the damage from the demon raid ran even deeper than expected. Was the stress getting to the King…?

Remilia-san was more important though. What I cared about was whether or not we could rescue Remilia-san.

“Isn’t there some way we can save her?”

“Not at the moment. Right now Gordon is taking down our allies left and right.”

“Gordon?”

“He’s ruthless against his foes. Now that he has his eye on you, I think it would be safer for you to quickly leave the Capital.”

“I-, I can’t just suddenly go…”

“Gordon will never willingly let his prey escape. You need to take your family and go.”

Denper-san made an extremely good point. Mum had already told me the kind of things the Fiend did.

In that case I needed to leave, and soon. First I’d head back to the restaurant to pack, and then take Timu and go. Everyone else in the Evil God Army could wait until things cooled down, and then leave for the countryside.

After I thanked Denper-san, I told Millie-san that I was leaving the Capital and then ran for the store.

But when I arrived somebody was standing in front of it.

Who the hell?

“Heyyy there! Why the hurry?”

This vulgar voice… There was no forgetting it. This man was one of Gordon’s followers.

The man approached me with an obscene look on his face.

Why was this man in front of my store?

“W-Why are you…?”

“Why? Well I spoke to some of the locals. Asked for a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty living around here.”

“W-Why…”

“Ku ku, I guess being a beauty isn’t all good things. With how popular you are at your store you’re practically a celebrity! Ahhahahah!”

Kuh! Oh no… They knew where we lived. I should have headed straight here and then left. I wasted too much time speaking to Millie-san when I should have come straight here.

Uu, but Millie-san was crying and worrying about me. I couldn’t just leave her like that.

“Well…? Did you come here for something?”

“A message from Gordon-sama. Tomorrow he’s coming to get you. If you aren’t there, he’ll kill your family and everybody you know.”

“H-, How could he.”

“I suppose I should let you know that we have plenty of men in the gatekeeper guards too. You couldn’t escape even if you wanted to.”

With that, the lackey left with uproarious laughter.

Godddamnit, what was I going to do.

This was going to be Sammy-chan all over again.

A sex slave to the Fiend… No! How could I ever service a man! Absolutely impossible. Just thinking about that scumbag was enough to make my hair stand on end.

And if the Fiend had his eye on me, then Timu was in danger too. Just thinking about him trying to hurt her made me so angry I almost blacked out.

What was I going to do?

Fleeing the Capital was impossible for the moment. If the man from before was telling the truth then the gatekeepers were filled with his men. Remilia-san was awaiting execution and couldn’t help right now. If anything, I wanted to help her.

Not that I could. Right now I could only hope that the Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons would be able to save her. I believed that they could.

I couldn’t escape from the capital.

Nobody was going to save me.

If Remilia-san really was executed then nobody would be able to stop the Fiend. Not just me, but Timu, Mum, Dad, everybody I loved would fall prey to him.

No! No! How could I possibly accept that!?

Then what was I going to do?

……

…………

………………

Killing him was the only way…

It saddened me that it had come to this, but I would do it.

Thankfully I had powerful allies. My only advantage against the Fiend.

It was those two. Myuu and Edim.

As long as they took the head of the Fiend before tomorrow morning, it would all work out. Myuu was on adventurer business away from the Capital right now. Considering the time limit, he wasn’t an option.

That left Edim. Edim, who could either kill the Fiend or make him hers.

No, but even if he became her kin his personality wouldn’t change. It wasn’t a guarantee that she could control him even after turning him into a vampire. In fact, it could make things even worse by giving him more power.

Killing was the only way forward.

In that case we could use Or’s political power too. I would send Edim’s power as a vampire to attack. In case that wasn’t enough, Or would use his connections to send her support.

A plan for murder slowly began to coalesce in my mind…

Haha, I was disgusting…

After all that talk about wanting Edim to live as a human, in the end I relied on her power as a vampire. She was the type of girl who would happily agree as long as I asked for her to help me. Even though I couldn’t imagine she actually wanted to use any of these powers otherwise.

I’m sorry, Edim.

I was going to become a criminal. He may have been a brute, and a villain, but I was still planning a murder. Success or failure, I would be bearing the karma for this deed. If that was the case, then I hoped to limit the involved parties to the bare minimum.

I would talk to Or and Edim about this. Nobody else had to know. And absolutely not Timu. I wanted her to live freely under the sunlight.

I was hesitant. Doing this would be bringing my dear friends Edim and Or into this mess. But the Fiend was truly dangerous. It wouldn’t be just me. Everyone would come to harm by his hands. For Timu’s sake, I would become heartless.

Accomplice to murder? Fine with me. If it meant protecting my family, becoming a criminal was nothing!

I sent for Or and Edim to meet me in one of the rooms.

Chapter 19 – “I met the real Fiend”

Hmm hmm~ Today was another sunny day~

I could feel the warm sun on my skin. Days like this were the best for searching for ingredients. That’s why I was on my way to the market looking for new ingredients for my cooking research.

There were a lot more adventurers in the Capital these days, so maybe they would be selling some meat from rare magic beasts. It was pretty exciting. Or gave me money earlier so I had platinum ready in my purse.

Huhu, with this I could buy everything and still have change left over. I had so much that I was considering looking for cooking utensils too. Thinking about it, I could really do with a new pan.

Oh! Maybe some spices would be good too. Yep, yep, the new recipe I was making would definitely need some spices.

And also…

――Wha-, oh no! I almost fell victim to another spending spree. Not good, not good. I cleared the worldly desires from my mind.

That’s right. These last few months I had been carelessly spending all of Or’s money, just like I almost did just now. And Or had so little sense that every time he would hand me platinum coins. A single platinum coin was equivalent to a commoner family’s yearly income, you know.

Hahh. We were in the red precisely because I kept doing this. But not today.

With renewed determination, I made my way to the marketplace.

I was about a block away from the marketplace when I came across Milley-san, a resident of that street. Milley-san was a nice lady who ran a fabrics store on Western Street. When I first came to the Capital she looked out for me in a lot of different ways. Introducing me to the people in the area, telling me about this great little out-of-the-way shop… Honestly too many examples to name. I suppose her only flaw was that she was a huge gossip. She knew heaps of weird tidbits about others.

I suppose she wasn’t any different to the housewives in my old world. Even if she was a gossip, she was kind and took care of others, which was what mattered.

I walked over to say hello.

“Hello, Milley-san!”

“Oh, Tilea-chan.”

When she turned around I realised she was wearing a severe expression. That was odd. She was usually so cheerful.

“Did something happen?”

“Tilea-chan, you know Sammy-chan don’t you?”

“Yes. The girl working in that store on Eastern Street?”

“Yes. Her. She killed herself this morning.”

“Eh!? That’s horrible!”

Sammy-chan…

We hadn’t really talked much. Maybe just a few times when I went shopping there. Still, I remember that she had a nice smile. Wasn’t she going to marry her childhood friend or something…?

“The poor girl was raped by an evil noble.”

“T-That’s so cruel!”

“It really was. Apparently when her fiancé tried to stop him, the atrocious man killed him right in front of her! It was inhuman.”

Eh!? Hang on. A noble. Inhuman? D-Don’t tell me…!?

“Um, so what was the name of that noble?”

Millie-san looked around before bringing her mouth to my ear.

“You need to take care about speaking about him.”

“Y-, Yes.”

Even a huge gossip like Millie-san was this careful. I was getting a bad feeling about this. Alarm bells were ringing in my head.

“His name is Duke Sam Gordon. A few decades ago he was committing so many of these same atrocities that they exiled him from the country.”

“Wha-!? The Fiend!?”

“So you know about him too, Tilea-chan. They call him that exactly because of how many women fell prey to him, and how many commoners he terrorised,” she told me.

The truth was as bad as I had feared…

The Fiend, or Sam Gordon, was both an influential noble as well as one of the most powerful magicians in the country. The Sam family had been on the decline for years due to their luxurious spending habits. When Sam Gordon became the head of the family though, all of that changed, and they began quickly returning to power.

But his means were awful. He used his title and a sweet mask to trick women into supporting him financially, and the men he killed and took from without mercy.

He went so far that the King at the time, King Arcudas the Third, not only dissolved the Sam family, but also expelled Gordon from the family. Not something he could have done to such an old and powerful house without great reason. But the King cited an example of a Marquisate being dissolved as precedent. That was how badly the commoner citizens hated Gordon.

Well, I heard all of this from Mum though.

“Millie-san, why is that villain back in the Capital?”

“I don’t know. For some reason they allowed him back in. His Majesty is supposed to have hated the Duke though.”

Why did they cancel his punishment?

The Capital was in the middle of recovering. It didn’t make sense to bring trouble back in with this timing. Especially when countless VIPs were all head over heels for Edim and might ignore what Gordon was doing.

No, no, but Remilia-san was here. Someone like Remilia-san would never just let that villain do as he wanted.

“U-Um, we have to stop――”

“Shh!” she whispered, expression taking a grave turn. “Speak of the devil. The Duke is here.”

Millie-san gestured, and I saw a huge group parading down the road. The most important-looking one in the middle was probably Gordon himself.

He was unshaven and haggard, but… I guess he seemed handsome?

In his youth he must have been a real looker, but he was looking quite old now. The exile couldn’t have treated him well either because he looked like he was wasting away. His eyes were a different story though. His eyes were intense and predatory, like a bird of prey. And I supposed birds of a feather flocked together because his followers all seemed like scumbags too. Every step of the way, they were making trouble for nearby pedestrians. I guess they were looking for women.

“They seem as vulgar as the rumours, Millie-san.”

“They are. The day before yesterday they were walking around like this too, which was when Sammy-chan…”

“Since everybody already knows about him he isn’t even bothering with pretences anymore…”

“He really isn’t. He’s doing as he pleases now.”

“Just looking at him is making me uncomfortable. I’m going to go call the guards.”

“Leave it, Tilea-chan. It’s no use. Even the guards have been infiltrated by his lackeys.”

“R-Really?”

“Yes. If you report him without thinking you might be next.”

Uuu. I guess it would be smarter to keep away from danger. I decided to blend in with the crowd and wait.

The way these men were acting was unbearable, though.

Could nobody really stop them?

Remilia-san…?

The members of the Public Safety Force…?

I didn’t have enough information to say. At any rate, I just needed to stay hidden until he passed by.

I was waiting in trepidation when a middle-aged man suddenly leapt out into the street with a sword drawn.

“Gordon! I won’t forgive you!” he roared.

If looks could kill then Gordon would be dead ten times over.

“Insolence! How dare you behave that way in front of Gordon-sama!”

His lackeys all drew their swords. It was ten against one, with the first man surrounded, but he tried to attack anyway.

“Easy, men,” stopped Gordon. “I will at least hear the man out. So, what’s this business about not forgiving me?” he smirked assuredly.

Gordon seemed to be enjoying this.

“You raped my wife Lynn!”

“Ku ku, Lynn was it?”

“What are you laughing about!”

“Lynn… Lynn… Who was that again?”

“Are you saying you don’t remember!?”

“Do you remember how many times you’ve played with yourself?”

“Bastaaard!”

The man flew into a rage and charged. Gordon’s lackeys fell one after another. His momentum was shocking enough that some of the lackeys faltered. Breaking through the group, he came at Gordon with a downward cut to the shoulder.

Unfortunately… the sword never reached him. In the blink of an eye, somebody had parried him.

“I shall face you in place of my lord,” spoke the sudden newcomer.

It was an old man who gave off the air of a butler. Not just some old man though. His muscled body seemed like it was made of steel.

It was probably Nyger Key, Gordon’s right-hand-man. Nobody knew where he had come from. All anybody knew for sure was that he was always by Gordon’s side, and that he protected him from harm.

This man seemed profoundly dangerous indeed…

Nyger was standing there perfectly unruffled, as though he was in no danger at all. The man with the sword seemed to sense the danger too because he was taking slow steps back.

“Stand down, Nyger.”

“Sir.”

“Rejoice, man. In respect for your reckless bravery, I will personally be your opponent.”

Gordon drew his own sword. Despite its length though, he was holding it in one hand. It was clearly designed to be used by two. This wasn’t something any ordinary warrior could do.

“Are… Are you looking down on me?!”

“Oh? No need to hold back. My right hand has been defective since birth. This should be a fine handicap. Now come. Let us begin.”

“Don’t fuck with me! I don’t need your fucking handicap! I’ll fight you on the same grounds!”

The man swapped to the same one-handed grip and charged.

“He’s lying! Don’t be fooled!” I screamed in reflex.

It had all been for naught, though. Gordon immediately used his right hand to change the direction of his attack and stabbed the man through the chest.

“Guhah! Hahh, b-bastard, your right… hand…”

“Ohh! Heavens! By some miracle my right hand began working just a moment ago. Truly, I must thank you, friend! Ha ha ha!”

In his youth he often pretended that his right hand was paralysed. Particularly to garner sympathy from women, but also to trick enemies in battle. Mum was right. He really was a cowardly scumbag. His right hand, left hand, legs, he used this same trick and claimed all sorts of injuries to fool people.

“Brilliant as always, Gordon-sama.”

“Ku ku, who would have thought an old trick like that would work. Fools like that are still around?”

Gordon and his followers guffawed together. All of them were disgusting.

I was trembling in rage when…

“Oh! I very almost forgot. Just now somebody accused me of being a liar, didn’t they.”

Gordon glared my way.

U-, Uh oh.

I was supposed to be hiding, but I just got found.

Apparently we were slowly gaining new members. I say ‘apparently’ because I wasn’t there to see it myself. Actually I wasn’t allowed to interact with them directly.
According to Club Pres, my title as a Pivoine member was scaring away some of the newer students, so she hoped that I would make myself scarce just for the duration of the recruitment period.

I couldn’t really fault that logic. Everyone who joined that club was the same timid and quiet type, so I could see how they might be afraid of us. In Zui’ran, the Pivoine were like the ultimate predators, after all. The one group that you shouldn’t ever offend.

I knew that feeling too. But I was an official member of the Handicrafts Club. Wasn’t there any way I could help!?

Anyhow, I was sitting in a corner and needle-felting, sparing the occasional glance at the visiting students, when one of them called out to me falteringly. Heck yes!

“Did you have a question?”

“Yes. I was hoping somebody could tell me about the sewing machine that this club uses, but…”

Sewing machine?

I wasn’t proud of this, but I had never used it before. Actually I sucked at them in general. Things just got out of hand, and then the threads started to get tangled and… Anyhow, it was just hard. Come to think of it, when I was younger the threads got tangled and the sewing machine stopped moving. So I tried yanking it out, but the struggle ended with the machine giving off smoke. Machinery was difficult to use, wasn’t it.

But it was a chance to help. I decided to try my best!

“What did you want to know about it?”

“I wanted to know which company made the overlock sewing machines. Also whether or not you had any 4-thread overlocks.”

…What on earth was an overlock machine. And what was this about 4-threads?

“I’ve only ever used a 3-thread. I was hoping to get the chance to try my hand at a 4-thread.”

???

Oh no. I was trying my best but it was all Greek to me…

But I was an official club member. I couldn’t let her know.

“…Please wait a moment. I am a little tied up at the moment, so I will find somebody to answer your questions. You wanted to know about overlock sewing machines, yes?”

Anybody! Isn’t there anybody who knows about these “overlocked machines”!?

While I was looking for somebody who could answer, another one of the visitors came up to that girl and said,

“That miss over there is a member of the Pivoine, you know! You can’t just send her on chores like that, what if you make them angry!?”

I returned with a girl who knew more about the topic but Overlock-chan said,

“I’m so sorry! I’m an External Student and only joined this year, so I really had no idea!”

earnestly apologising to me.

It wasn’t a problem at all, though… I was just pretending to be busy so I didn’t have to explain. So seriously, please don’t look so scared of me~ I’m part of the commoner-faction, you know?

Maybe I should learn more about sewing machines…

Around that time, Ririna showed up with her buddies in tow.

“Geez, Reika-san! What a boring club you’ve joined!”

That stupid girl!

Flames of rage were beginning to grow in my heart but she had a lot of followers. If she joined the club, wouldn’t we get a whole wave of members!?

“Goodness, welcome, Ririna-san. Did you have some interest in handicrafts?” I asked as graciously as possible but…

“As if! Like I’d ever join such a minor club. I just came to make fun of you!”

Since that was the case, I immediately kicked her out.

Unfortunately some of the other club prospectives happened to see it all, and they ran away in fear. Curse you, Ririnaaaa!

Club President put her hand on my back, and gently returned me to my corner. This time a bunch of mannequin torsos were set in front of me like a wall.

It was a little lonely here…

*

*

Class Rep was looking gloomy. When I asked him what was wrong, it turned out that Miharu-chan was getting along with a boy in her class.

“We’re in different classes too. Looks like I’m at a major disadvantage, huh? What do I do. Do you think Honda-san really likes him?”

“Hmmm.”

I wasn’t all that close with her or anything, but maybe I would have a chance to ask her. Class Rep looked desolate.
Thinking about it, wasn’t Nonose-san friendly with Miharu-chan? I saw them having lunch together quite a lot.

“Shall I find out for you?”

“Eh!? You would do that!? Thank you, Kisshouin-san!”

The maiden beamed with surprised joy. I didn’t mind doing this but what was he going to do if she really did like somebody?

*

The next day I greeted Nonose-san in the morning, and used that as an exchange to engage in some small talk. Obviously I couldn’t just walk up and demand she explain Miharu-chan’s relationship with him.

“I still owe you for taking care of me during the summer camp in middle school. Thank you for supporting me, especially while I was struggling with leading. I have ended up as a class representative again, but I hope for your continued support.”

“Of course! I don’t know how I can help but if I can then I will. Wow though. Summer camp. That’s nostalgic.”

We had fun chatting about it for a while.

“Come to think of it, Miharu-san attends every year, but she was strangely absent the one year I attended.”

“Oh, now that you mention it she did miss out. I remember mailing her while I was there.”

“Oh my. What did you say?”

“Ummm… I’ve forgotten. Probably something about the fireworks.”

“I see. It would have been nice to be in the same class together.”

“Yes. We thought it was a shame too.”

“I see. Had Miharu-san been in our class, she would certainly have been the class representative instead. And she gets along with Class Rep.”

“You think…? I think Class Rep makes a better pair with you, Reika-sama. What do you think of him?”

“Class Rep? I suppose I find him earnest and diligent?”

“I thought so~! Reika-sama, you’re close with Iwamuro-kun from the Judo Club too, aren’t you? What do you think about him?”

“Iwamuro-kun, you ask? Why, I think he is a man who knows what he wants, and is willing to put in the effort as well.”

Ever since I gave him that facial mask, apparently he never stopped maintaining his skin. Thanks to that, he could boast the most flawless skin in the Judo Club.

“I see~”

I didn’t know why, but Nonose-san was nodding in enjoyment. Who cares about me, we’re supposed to talk about Miharu-chan.

“Speaking of boys, is Miharu-san close with any in her new class?”

“Boys? Hmmm, I can’t say I’ve heard her say anything like that. Oh my, Reika-sama, you’re actually interested in these kinds of gossip?”

“Eh-, I, well…”

“I’d love to hear more about your romances~ Ah, but I suppose I shouldn’t ask, right?”

She looked a little disappointed. Uh, no, I actually don’t have any wonderful stories to tell.

“Every love rumour we hear about you is romantic. I’m envious.”

“Huh? Love rumour?”

“Like the love poem anthology. The story had me spellbound. The chamberlain and mercenary just weren’t the best choice. Reika-sama, I’ll support you!”

“Eh? Chamberlain? Mercenary?”

I had no idea what she was talking about but the bell rang so our conversation was cut short.

What on earth was that…?

But she mentioned something I couldn’t ignore. Love poem anthology. Don’t tell me she was talking about Kaburagi!? What on earth was romantic about that!? It was a cursed item, damnit!

Class Rep glanced my way during class, but sorry. I didn’t get anything out of it.

*

Dite came and pressed me about the performance for our class trip.
Sorry, I forgot.
He handed me a CD and asked me to choose one of the tracks on it. Apparently he had recorded his violin performances.

Did I really have to listen to this…?
