Book of God – 14

Because the Spear Hero is a dude with a spear and blue hair, I keep imagining bad things happening to him.

Chapter 14 – Puzzle Hell

I wasn’t employed in my old world so I can only guess, but I wonder if the enquiry divisions of call centres were battlefields of neverending calls.

“No, the correct answer for that question is left!”

“Like I fucken know! How bout you think for yourself a little!”

“AHH!? Why did you go left! Eh? I told you to go left, you say? …Well, there are times like that too.”

“Tsk, aight, aight. I’ll have a look so wait a bit!”

While giving a side glance at Sophia and Anbaal who were being bombarded by questions, I sipped my tea.

“You two sure are busy, aren’t you.”

“──This is your fault, isn’t itt!?”

“──Ain’t this your faultt!?”

They got angry.

The floor that the mixed party was currently tackling was the floor that Leonora struggled with as well; the 11th floor Quiz Floor. It’s a simple floor where you’re given 10 questions with 3 choices each, and the answers give you the right path to take, but if you make even a single mistake you’ll be sent back to the beginning. Because of that, you need to get all 10 questions right.
Ever since they broke into the 11th floors, they’ve been asking Sophia and Anbaal questions without end, and their angry yells have been flying about the room.
But well, it’s not like I don’t understand. After all, the Hero side had completely left out anybody who specialised in knowledge, and was a line-up filled with battle specialists. As for the Demon King faction, Renarve was a combat type, and you could say that Vikuto was the only one who was really good at thinking problems. I’m not quite sure about Ojisama, but at the very least, he didn’t seem to be doing too well with the quizzes.
This party is overwhelmingly lacking in brain power.

“Has my choice to choose all battle specialists ended up in vain?”

“Those guys are basically all meatheads after all.”

“My condolences.”

What’s more, they weren’t joining their forces at all, and the Hero side and Demon King side were tackling their own quizzes. So the discord between them really is huge, huh.
However, perhaps because their gods gave them strict orders to cooperate, they did seem to at least try and head in the same direction. There was a tacit agreement that when one side solved a question, the other side would follow them, and they progressed this way while competing against each other as well.

『Fumu, the answer to this question is this way, I believe.』

『Tsk, like we’ll lose!』

『Wai-, Lionel-san!? That way is wrong isn’- …AHH!?』

『…Starting from the beginning again, huh?』

『Bastards, one of you restrain that fool!』

『Uh, umm… Sorry.』

Oh? They look like they’re getting along unexpectedly well.

Compared to the Quiz Floor where they got the wrong answer again and again and were sent back to the end each time, with the Moving Floor, as long as you could see the place from above it was a lot easier, so with the advice of the Light God and the Dark God, they progressed without too much difficulty.

…Right, they progressed without too much difficulty. They.

Behind the scenes of the smoothly progressing mixed party was the tear-inducing efforts of Sophia and Anbaal.

“R, R, D, D, U, D, R, D, U.”

“D, L, L, D, U, R, D, D, U.”

“D, R, D, D, U, L, D, R, U.”

“R, U, D, D, R, U, R, R, D.”

“D, L, L, R, U, D, D, L, L.”

“R, R, R, R, U, D, R, R, D… So the bottommost one is the exit, huh.”

“Yes. With this, the entire room has been mapped.”

Sophia and Anbaal – drawing a rough sketch of the dungeon’s large room, and mapping the room’s arrows one by one. With the map they drew in the middle, the two of them glared at it from either side, and began wracking their brains.

“So ya get on here, and it sends ya right, then down… No good, just goes right back.”

“In that case, if you start from here… So this one was a failure as well.”

“Seriously such a bother. Cantcha just jump over it?”

“If they could do so, then they would have done so long ago.”

While following along the arrows on their map, Sophia and Anbaal were discussing the right path, but they weren’t making much progress.

“Damn, that looks tough. Want some tea?”

“──Like I said, isn’t this your faultt!? And yes please.”

“──Like I said, ain’t this your faultt!? Thanks, gimme some.”

Seeing the two angry gods ask for tea anyway, I made them some. Since they were tackling a problem that was using their brains, I decided that sugar was important at times like these, so I gave them a little more than usual. But well, it’s a question to begin with whether or not divines even need sugar.

“Thank you very much.”

They each gave their reply as I passed them their cups, and then they turned back to the maps before taking a sip.

In the next instant, they spat out the tea in their mouths. Gross.

“S-, So damn sweet…!?”

“You, just how much sugar did you place in our tea!?”

“A lot.”

I used about half of the sugar jar for their two cups.

“More importantly, is your map okay?”

“Eh? AAAHH!? The map that we spent so long to make…”

“Tsk, hurry up and wipe it dry!”

Sophia and Anbaal frantically wiped the map that was wet with the tea from their mouths, but the arrows were blurred, and it didn’t seem usable any more.

“Uuu, will we need to draw it all again?”

“Sif I’m gunna… Oi, this is half your fault, so help us out.”

“…Can’t be helped.”

I was wondering why on earth I needed to give advice on how to conquer the dungeon I made myself, but this time really was partially my fault, so I decided to help with just the map drawing.

“Or rather, if you just gave us the damn answer, we wouldn’t even need to do this.”

“No way. I don’t remember it.

On the floor where you needed to get on a mine cart to reach the door, or the floor where you needed to turn the right switches to open the door, thanks to the Light God and Dark God’s efforts in drawing out diagrams, the mixed party was able to advance smoothly. But on the other hand, when it came to puzzles that you couldn’t solve even if you looked at them, as you’d expect, the two gods were greatly troubled.
The 19th floor was exactly of that sort; there were two containers, and you needed to fill the water in them evenly.

Of the two containers that were 10 units of water each, one was filled to the brim while the other was completely empty. Here, you needed to use the 3 unit bucket and the 7 unit bucket, and even out the two containers to 5 units each. If you hit a switch, it would return the water to its original levels, so you could repeat it as much as you wanted.

“Um, is this fine?”

“It’s fine.”

I asked Tena to prepare two sets of containers just the right size. The actual size of the containers were different to the ones on the 19th floor, but because they were scaled properly, they were plenty for solving the puzzle.
Across the monitor, the Heroes and demons were wrestling the same problem, and made mistakes when drawing water to move them and stuff.
I left the four containers in front of Sophia and Anbaal, and had Tena fill one with water.

“Why must we do something like…”

“Don’t say it. It’s damn depressing.”

Apparently having already noticed that it was the type of puzzle they were bad at, Sophia and Anbaal’s expressions were grave. However, the two of them who had begun tackling the puzzle, sighing all the while, immediately noticed something wrong and made a puzzled expression.

“This scent is…”

“Wai-, oi! Ain’t this alcohol.”

Right; Tena had filled the containers with not water, but alcohol. Noticing the smell, Sophia and Anbaal began to become oddly restless.
This world was the same in that alcohol had an inseparable relationship with religions, and wine was offered at mass. I’ve never drunk any before so I don’t know, but apparently it was common knowledge that divines liked alcohol.
That’s why I thought to test it out, but I saw that the two were obviously distracted by it and couldn’t concentrate on solving the puzzle.
Seeing them, I realised that it would be a long battle, so I decided to have a break.

“Tena, could I trouble you with some more tea?”

“Yes, understood.”

It wasn’t like I couldn’t steep the tea myself, but the tea she made was better tasting, so I asked her for more. Before long, I sipped the cup that she passed to me, and let out a long sigh.

“Um, Anri-sama? Why are you cooperating with the two of them? It would be better for them not to capture the dungeon, wouldn’t it?”

Perhaps so that the other two couldn’t hear, Tena asked me in a small voice.
Certainly, just considering the match, there wasn’t any reason for me to help the two of them and the mixed party; rather, you could say it would be better for me to obstruct them. I disturbed their concentration with the alcohol, but it was just a slight prank that you couldn’t really call obstructing them.
Either way, I felt that it was just a matter of time before they solved the problem anyway, but the biggest reason was that I was thinking about the future.

“It’s because having my relationship with them deepen is completely linked to our future.”

I succeeded in gaining a one year grace period, but you could also say that I only gained a year.
We concentrated our efforts on rushing to build the shops around the temple, and this country was continuing to rapidly develop. But no matter how positive we were being about it, we hadn’t reached what you would call a country. At best we had finally evolved from a village to a town. It was probable that even a year from now, we wouldn’t reach the level of a country.
In that case, if we messed things up, there was even the risk that the moment the one year was up, we would fall into the dilemma of being invaded by the other countries. In order to avoid that, there was the need to deepen our ties with the other countries to the extent that they wouldn’t invade, but the best way to do that was to have Sophia and Anbaal as the mediators.
I did already ask them to do so, but the closer our relationship began, the lower the chance of a foreign invasion. Because of that, I wanted to become as close as possible.

“Well, that’s not the only thing though.”

However, even if there wasn’t that plan, it was true that just talking to them was quite fun. In my old world, I was an only child, so if I had an older brother or sister, would it be something like this? Or so I ended up imagining.

Would it be easier to see as arrows?
You enter from the top and leave from the bottom.
There were a number of rooms like this, all connected.

By the way, since anybody could figure it out just by trying the top arrows one by one, please don’t bother with it, and since I am not really taking answers for the water container question either, please kindly refrain from writing the answers in the syosetu impressions tab.

tl: they actually said ‘right, left, up’ etc. and not ‘R, L, U’ but it looks a lot neater in kanji, whereas in English is would just be a diarrhoea of letters, so I used single letters instead.

      1. pour the 3 into the 7 two times, then fill up the 3, use it to fill up the 7, and you are left with two units in the 3. pour the two units into a jar, then fill up the 3 again and pour it into the two to make 5

        Liked by 2 people

      2. Meh. Easier to just pour the 3 Tank into the 7 Tank three times. There will be Two left in the 3 Tank that you can pour into the empty 10 Tank, then take another 3 from the 7 Tank to make Five.

      3. Except you cant. You can start instantly with a 3, to shorten that, but when you have 4 in the pot, you can NOT take 7 from the other, as there is only 6 left in the other pot, leaving you always 1 short with your method. It is +3, +3, +3, -7, +3.

          1. Yuri is for all ages, ALL AGES! xD
On the other hand, I wonder what the readers would do with a more difficult puzzle…

      4. Spelled out
        F=full at start
        E=empty at start
        3x3F>E (9,1)
        7E>F (2,8)
        3F>E (5,5)

        The arrows are ridiculously simple
Start on any of the 5 squares left side of bottom row. Follow the pointer.

        1. Oops. Missed that it is top down. 6th from left. As stated if remaining calm it is simply a matter of trying a different start on each attempt.

    1. Sophia keeps sneaking in sips when Anbaal wasn’t looking and Anbaal kept hiding bottles of the alcohol.

      2-hours later

Anri? We solved this puzzle! Both bottles are empty! *Hick…!*

  1. Thanks for the chapter! And the water puzzle! I hadn’t heard of that one before and had fun puzzling it out!

  2. the water jar puzzle seems similar to an old chinese story about a young boy who helped two oil merchants split their oil

  3. Really, It’s been a lot of chapters in a really short time, thank you for the hard work!!

I really loved this chapter, seeing the god-hero combo suffering together with puzzle games and Anri’s way of interacting with the gods…

    1. I’m aiming to finish the main story before the 7th. That leaves me with a few days for the last 6 chapters.

The side stories have been coming at as recently as 2ish weeks ago, so I’ll be doing them more slowly.

There are also the fairytale parodies (which may require me to translate some of the originals, actually, since they aren’t well known in English…) as well as the interview between Anri and Leonora.

      1. There’s wiki entries for all the stories though .- . you can probably get away with just linking the respective wiki to their stories.

  4. Fill 7 unit bucket from 1st container
Fill 3 unit bucket from 7 unit bucket
Dump 3 unit bucket into 1st container
Fill 3 unit bucket from 7 unit bucket
Dump 7 unit bucket into 2nd container, 2nd container now has 1 unit
Dump 3 unit bucket into 1st container
Fill 7 unit bucket from 1st container, 1st container now has 2 units
Fill 3 unit bucket from 7 unit buckets
Dump 3 unit bucket into 1st container
Dump 7 unit bucket into 2nd container
    Both containers have 5 units.

Grab 7 units from the 2nd container and pour it back into 1st container.

  5. hmm.. meatbun want to try..

  6. I’ve wanted to ask since I’ve seen you use it in some other place, I think otoburi…what’s with that “Sif …” expression?

  7. Thank you—!
    Haha, i finally caught up!
I was totally rofl throughout the chapter, especially “one of you restrain that fool!” Ahaha—!
And then suddenly, at the end, feels, when Anri talks about thinking of the other two as her older siblings…! My heart—!

      1. You forgot ‘cute’ as an adjective for her, too—! But, yes, that is a pretty apt description! I’d also like to say, she complements them—! Cute siblings!

  8. Are you on killing spree? Because you sure is killing my sleeping time with all of your releases (already past midnight here)

…..not that I’m mad about that though. Who need sleep, meh. :)

  9. Can I say that I HATE moving tile puzzles? Always the most annoying part of the Pokemon series, in my mind.
I sympathize with Sophia and Anbaal.

My thanks to you, O esteemed holy sheeprabbit.

  10. Thanks 4 the chapter!

I encountered the water puzzle before in several RPG games. Many of them have maximum number of moves we can make before they forcefully reset, or as in one game, the ship blew up (in this version it wasn’t water but plasma and the player had to equalize the pressure). So the water puzzle here is relatively easy since there is no maximum number of moves or attempts.

  11. It’s funny how the Divines are bad at puzzles and Anri is unintentionally interfering with the overly sweet tea and the alcohol. They might become very good friends. Thanks for the translation.

  12. The water puzzle can be solved with 5 moves:
Use size 3 thrice, balance goes from 10-0 to 1-9.
Use size 7 once, balance changes to 8-2.
    Use 3 again, 5-5

    I think.

  13. 3u -> 1st 10u jar; 7u – 3u = 4u; 4u -> 2nd 10u jar
    3u + 3u = 6u; 0u in 1st jar
    4u – 3u = 1u; 1u in 2nd jar
    3u = 2u + 1u; 6u + 1u = 7u
    2u -> 1st jar
    7u – 3u = 4u; 3u -> 1st jar; 4u -> 2nd jar
    1st jar: 3u + 2u = 5u
    2nd jar: 4u + 1u = 5u

Haha now everyone do this puzzle

  14. Watching all of them be terrible at the puzzles was way too amusing. Thanks for the translations. As usual for enjoyable stories, I don’t know whether to feel sad that it’s almost over, or excited for the ending.

I looked at the side stories and saw that the author’s only on the 6th side story currently, but was wondering about a 3rd arc. Do you know if the author is planning to do a 3rd arc or not? Sorry if you said this somewhere already and I missed it.

“but wonder if the enquiry divisions of call centres were battlefields of neverending calls”

      1. It’s because that’s the one that most people saw from the sub. I actually hear that it was subbed accurately and that Japan changed the line for their dub of South Park , but I could be wrong.

  15. Did anri ever get around to completing the last 10 floors with puzzles or something? I forgot. On another note… Something random I thought up.

Hero’s diary: it’s been two weeks since we’ve been in this dungeon and the weird questions are driving us nuts. The end doesn’t seem to be getting any closet, and I really wonder how many floors there are after this. I really hope there won’t be more of these weird questions on the upcoming floors, why must it be so hard. The maou and his group seem to be having just as much trouble with them as we are. Both of or gods have been giving us constant guidance throughout this whole ordeal but even they are having trouble with these sorts of things. Seems like the maou and his group aren’t so bad after all seeing how similar we are to each other. I wonder why we have to fight them anyways? I just wanna get out of here as soon as you possible. I wonder if I’ll burn under the sun after this?

Anyways thanks for the chapter sheep. Wonder how leanore is doing while watching her father and hero party suffer through this. Anri’s country is growing well~

  16. As far as i see this she allowes the other gods to cheat at the pussle when they are allowed to help there champions but at the end i think she dosent really need to win this fight to win the war^^.

  17. Anri should grab [Madness/Insanity] authority for her secondary, and then just start driving the hero/demon teams paranoid.

possibly offer both of the teams to teleport them to 30th floor if they take out the other team? and make sure they both know the other team has been given the same offer.

  18. “R, R, D, D, U, D, R, D, U.”

    “D, L, L, D, U, R, D, D, U.”

    “D, R, D, D, U, L, D, R, U.”

    “R, U, D, D, R, U, R, R, D.”

    “D, L, L, R, U, D, D, L, L.”

    “R, R, R, R, U, D, R, R, D…

What is this? A Walkthrough? My stomach hurts from laughing too much XD
btw, Anri will probably govern over the sub authority of trolling after all of this XD

    1. It’s a map. Each room has a one-way door to go to the next, and you need to pick one that could send you to the exit.

The answer is the 6th door from the left, btw.

  19. I bet from now one Anri-sama will also be known as Trickster God and she’ll take the scholars and knowledge as her authority. Considering that the other gods are dumb…

  20. For the arrow puzzle, wouldn’t it be better to start from the bottom and then backtrack? Like that, you can tell right away that you have to end up in the bottom-right corner, since there’s no way to actually get to the other exit, and then you just backtrack from there.

        1. From what I could read in the text, it was more like they have a paper with a bunch of squares and was trying to make a map out of it. I.e. by putting down arrows one room at a time.

  21. This must be one of the most amusing and heartwarming things I’ve read in this novel.

    Thanks for the chapter!

  22. That arrow room puzzle was too easy for GODs who have a bird eye view. I would have make it much more complicate. Like adding at least 5 more relays ending point, that force them to choose another set of arrows, it choose wrong they could get send to dead end relay, or backward relay, or just toward the beginning.

Anri should just let the puzzle work to me, since I will thoroughly enjoy harassing meat head.

I would likely add a purely mind torture puking floor: It would have randomized Multidimensional Stair Case, featuring optical illusion every location possible.

Add on a Riddle floor right after that with only 3 animal riddles , that will have them act out the animals when answering them, If they are wrong, get send back to the previous floor with the correct answer for that riddle and the one that already answer once cannot answer again. If they are unlucky they will have to go through the Puking floor 4 times (including the first time), and every ones have to act as an animal.

Yup, I am a sadist for meat head.

    1. How about a Resident Evil room with a library and stacks of newspapers you need to find a code out of?

      Mmm….salty meatheads are so delicous.

  23. Thanks for the chapter!

Maybe the heroes and demons will bond over this harrowing experience…
A challenge where you must form 3 teams of 2 would help things along ;-)

And if she made a level where contacting the gods is impossible, the two would get some well-earned rest.

    *Put 3 x 3 in the 7-bucket; when it’s full, there’s 2 left in 3-bucket.
*Put those 2 and another 3-bucket in the empty container.
*Pour the rest of the 7-bucket back in the first container.

  24. The buckets are 10-0, and you want to make them 5-5. To do so you move 7 units twice to the right (14), and 3 units thrice to the left (9), 14-9=5. In the order of 7r, 3l ,3l, 7r, 3l to be able to draw full buckets.

  25. The water puzzle thing is kinda a silly thing to have trouble with… I can’t believe an entire floor was dedicated to that. That’s like ten minutes of trouble in a Zelda game, and only if you suck. The zelda game would probably make it a lot harder too, like having two one-hundred liter jugs and a bunch of ten liter jugs, and each jug had to be filled with a different amount of liquid.

  27. Yanno if i were the two god of light and dark i might want to take a long step back and study this situation. Seeing as they have only had each other to contend with they have ossified to a certain level of “meatheadedness” and might not want to piss off the new girl too much as she has consistently shown shee is smarter than they are.

  28. My answer to the buckets? From 10-0 -> 7-3 -> 4-6 -> 1-9 -> 8-2 -> 5-5 (less movements than RML, more movements but less complicated than elyandarin).

  29. This chapter was great. I couldn’t stop laughing. Puzzle hell indeed.

Just a question though. Wouldn’t summoned heroes do fine here?
