So it turns out that Google Translation isn’t complete garbage. All this time I thought it was completely retarded, but it turns out that Japanese is just overly contextual with Devil’s Language syntax.
I think even 60-70% of the meaning of Chinese can come through!
Truly a marvellous invention. I’ll never use ‘google translation’ as an insult again.

I would disagree. A lot of the garble that comes out of google translate makes no sense to my Chinese friends. :l

It has been improved recently.
As a native Chinese, I find Google translation for anything not literal to be trash and incomprehendable.

For Bing to be used as an insult we would first have to take Bing seriously.
Saying ‘Bing can’t translate’ is like saying ‘My seven year old sister can’t translate’; noone in their right mind would assume it would be able to in the first place. ;)

I’ve had decent luck with Bing translate from Chinese to English but rarely Japanese to English. It’s usually readable at least. Names though will get translated 3 different ways in a few paragraphs. Like Feng, mountain, little hill. If you memorize the meaning of main character names it clarifies it a lot.

It is better with Chinese than Japanese I agree.
But sometimes when novels uses really ambigious phrases that is too conventional it would get it wrong.

By conventional I mean net-speak phrases like “坑爹” which means to “troll” in English, google translate would literally translate it to “pit father”.

I messed around with all bing the the results were less than 10% correctness and 200% entertainment. Also, 90% brain fucked after 10 sentences.

Have you tried Microsoft translator. Depends on the series, but it is superior to GT quite often.

i think he means that google translate is not really that good for all texts.
as i said before, atg is one of the exceptions where gt is useful and there’s actually quite a good level of accuracy. another such novel would be douluo dalu, which is slightly worse at around perhaps 50-60%? but for general novel reading, gt can be a killer sometimes.
tl;dr, machine translators have different accuracy levels depending on the text.

Ah, well you can’t really count stuff like douluo continent. I mean, looking at the techniques and stuff, I can imagine a lot of stuff is made-up compounds.
ATG works well because it’s mostly straightforward without much crazy stuff. The thing is though, if ATG were in Japanese instead, it’d still be 20-30% accuracy garbade using google tl.

well for translation it’s not good but just to understand the main idea in the raw chapter is good enough for a reader. for a machine translation by the way it’s better if it marked with clear label that it’s machine translation because it’s translation is clearly inacurate.

Well, for the good machine translators usually use 3 or 4 diferent machine programs when translating. They compere each translation serching for the sentences that make more sense among each MT

Have to wonder why tho the CN translations seem to end up better then JP. Sadly names seem to translate like crap.

Well wont matter soonish for the fall i’m gonna learn both CH and JP or at least start to. planning as im learning to try and translate some of the LN’s and torture the internet with it for how bad i know it will be at the start. That and my shitty english i always hated it during highskool. The grammer nazis will go crazy.

I’m currently on chapter 1417 of Martial Asura God on GT…….don’t judge me, it’s really addicting. For actual translating, it might be a headache, but I can understand everything going on in the story perfectly.

Afrikaans generally gets translated with ~40% accuracy.
Although it managed to get most of a sentence translated to english the last time I used it which was unusual.

Chinese grammar is quite a bit simpler than Japanese grammar, but I have to say I’m amazed you can get that much out of it. As someone who knows Chinese, it always seems like incomprehensible gibberish when I put anything in an MTL.
