Reika-sama – 078

Everybody, please check the FAQ first before asking me questions.

If it’s not on there, please feel free and ask. I only get annoyed at questions when the same one has been asked 10+ times, and by then I’ll have updated the FAQ.

Thank you for your consideration, guys!

There was meant to be a whole message and Worm fanfiction recommendation list here but when I published after changing the link from everything was blank and scumbag wordpress had no fucken drafts, so fuck. I’ll edit it in now I guess…

EDIT: Okay, fuck. So! Like I was saying in my earlier draft, I’m sorry for the long absence. The last time I released a chapter was August 12th, so a bit under 3 months ago.

EDITEDIT: Why does wordpress keep fucking blanking everything!?

EDITEDITEDIT: Hopefully third time is the charm. So! August 12th. I’m sorry for my absence. I was really busy with my masters degree and was busy until roughly the 1st of November. Yes, I am aware that it is now the 7th of November. Some issues with Warframe and Worm fanfiction came up, okay? Namely that I wanted to do those more than translate.

Speaking of Worm fanfiction though, if you haven’t read Worm, go read it now. NOW! If you have read it, here are some fanfiction recommendations I’d like to make! The formatting and reviews are shitter because this is the second time I’m doing this, so please bear with me.

Constellations by Unwelcome Storm. (SB)(SV)
A light-hearted, funny, adorable, and very enjoyable crossover with Ōkami.

Twinnings by Harbin (SB)(SV)
Taylor with Coil powers. Note that the stories on SB and SV diverge at chapter 1.5 and I’d recommend you read both. The SpaceBattles version first. Fun stuff.

Starry Eyes by helnae (SV)
A completely adorable alternate power fanfiction where Taylor cuts off her face and makes friends with a shoggoth and nightgaunt.

Heredity by BeaconHill (SB)(SV)
A fun alternate universe fanfiction where Taylor moves to Arcadia and somehow ends up teaming up with Amy.

Intrepid by Cerulean (SB)(SV)
An alternate universe (and thus power) fanfiction that follows four different protagonists: Madison, Emma, Sophia and Taylor. Four different teams with one of them each. Non-Mary Sue-ish and really quite an engaging story.

As for some longer stories, we have Cenotaph and sequels which read… a lot like the original Worm I suppose, Queen of Blood which is nowhere near as edgy as you’d expect from a name like that, A Cloudy Path which is great but somehow even more emotionally draining to read than the original Worm, Atonement which is cheesy and Mary Sue-ish but still somehow pretty good and really fun, Magical Girl Lyrical Taylor which is… um… well I’d definitely recommend it…, and finally Amelia which is a dark fixfic which was pretty okay.

This year’s excursion was to Kamakura.

A city! It’s finally a city! Goodbye, mountain climbing! Or so I thought until I heard that, yep, we were going to be hiking. To think that even Kamakura had hiking…

But well, I guess I was already kinda prepared for that. The real issue was the lunch.

After spending the whole gruelling morning on hiking, next was returning to the reserved hotel banquet hall to have lunch together as a whole grade. I was told that we were going to have seafood. Seafood is great stuff.

The problem comes after. Apparently it’s Zui’ran tradition to have the External Students of each class gather together to prepare some kind of skit for the lunch. Like a baptism of sorts for them.

But a skit! And in front of three-hundred odd people! It’s a total punishment game.

When the Externals in my class heard about it, all of them went deathly pale. Not like I don’t understand though.

After asking around a bit, apparently the previous years were pretty much all choirs and concerts, with the occasional dance or magic trick. A few oddballs apparently banded together to recite Japanese waka poetry or haikus, too.

That day, whenever we had spare time, the Externals would group together and plan for the lunch skit. Mn, for things like this you have to decide what to do first after all.

“Can’t we just sing something?”

“But whatever would we sing? And would it be possible to sing loudly enough for a large hall such as this?”

“But that makes it even harder to see a skit.”

Hmm~ Looks like they’re having trouble.

Satomi-kun and I called out to them.

“How goes it? Have you yet agreed upon anything?”

They all shook their heads at me with troubled expressions.

“Apparently most people just sing or perform on instruments,” I added.

“But it’d be difficult to bring instruments…”

“I believe it quite possible to have them loan you at least a piano or a guitar. And the hall is furnished with a screen so with a microphone small magic tricks or juggling should be possible.”

Looks like they had more options now.

“By the way, what’s the most popular thing for us to do?”

“From what I hear, some students with particular confidence in their singing voices decided to sing Nessun Dorma. Apparently they were met with quite an applause, and were called the Three Tenors of Zui’ran or somesuch. They were so popular in fact that the popularity of doing mini operas sky-rocketed in the following years, or so the story goes.”

“The Three Tenors…? But if there were only three singers, what was everybody else doing?”

“Lighting and sound, it seems.”

“Having it focused around one person might not be a bad idea.”

“However, pushing the pressure onto a single classmate is not ideal, so generally things of more equal participation are expected. The exceptions are only when somebody is particularly talented at something.”

They looked at each other. Unfortunately none of them seemed to be superstars of any sort. They all looked a little crestfallen.

“Dances are popular too but it kinda depends on how tired each class is after the hike,” advised Satomi-kun.

Yeah~ If it were me I’d be half dead after all the walking.

“But there’s been all kinds of dances too. Stuff from proper dances, to waltzing to piano music or something.”

“I’ve never waltzed before.”

“Me neither… Outside of folk dancing at school, I’ve never really…”

Folk dancing, huh. If somebody did like, an Oklahoma Mixer, I’d probably end up laughing.

Ah, maybe a Mayim Mayim would be more exciting?

It turned out to be a unanimous vote against folk dancing. After long deliberation, they decided on the safe option of choir singing.

They immediately went to practice after school but the kids from the other classes were thinking the same thing obviously, so it was quite a scramble for the piano. After all, whether for choir or concert performances, the piano is a key part, right?

The music rooms in the high school section weren’t enough so I went and negotiated with the school. In the end I got permission for them to use the middle school ones as well.

“You’re amazing. You got us permission to use the middle school rooms? Umm, I guess you used your power as a Pivoine, right?” asked a girl hesitantly.

Hmmm. I can’t really say. When I went and talked to the teacher I was just like,

“Say, since you made me take up the class rep position and all, just lending me a room or two is nothing, riight?”

so I’m pretty sure I wasn’t demanding anything. Mn. That sounds right. It was just a request.

“I should think it was because the school cooperates with its students,” I smiled.

Please don’t look at me so suspiciously.

Anyway, I was pushing for them to sing gospel music but they were like “We don’t have enough people for that…” and refused. Hm, do you really need that many people? I mean, the Three Tenors of Zui’ran managed, so can’t you get loud enough if you try? I was so sure it’d be popular too.

In the end they chose something easy. Well, it’s a song I quite like anyway, so it’s all good I guess.

After entrusting the key to the music rooms to the External students, I headed for the Pivoine. Just to be safe, I’ll check up on the Externals once more before I go home later.

On the way, I bumped into Katsuragi Boy in the hallway.

“Ah! Why the hell are you in the middle school!”

I checked the hallway in all directions. Hmm~ Nobody seems to be here. Alright.

I sentenced the rude little junior to a facial noogie.

I didn’t hold back at all so I’m sure it hurt quite a bit. Since we were the same height though, he pulled me off rather easily.

“What the fuck are you doing, violent woman!?”

“Is that how you address a senior? My, such a dullard, you poor thing. I henceforth name you Birdboy. The bird-brained Birdboy.”

“Fuck you!”

“My, are you not satisfied? Then go learn some manners and I shall promote you back to a full human once more. Well then, gokigen’yoh, Birdboy-kun.”

I walked away with a HO HO HO! when I heard the idiot call out,

“A bitch like you will never be worthy of Enjou-san!”

So of course I headed right back.

“W-What are you doing?”

Since he had his guard high, I kicked him in the shin.

Hurt, didn’t it. Even the legendary warrior monk Benkei would cry from a shin kick.

Truuly such a cretinous bird. Worry not. I have no feelings towards Enjou-sama at all. I will not get in the way of your love for him. Society still has much progress to be made towards completely understanding homosexuality, but there is no harm in fantasising as you please. Do as you deign appropriate.”

“Wha-, I’m not-”

OHOHOHOHOHO, I can’t heaar youuu~

With that, I left my mentally challenged kouhai behind.

The Externals in each class continued to practice each day.

One time in the hallway, I caught sight of Wakaba-chan running around covered in some weird cloth, but, eh, don’t tell me it’s really some dress-up skit!?

“One time in the hallway, I caught sight of Wakaba-chan running around covered in some weird cloth, but, eh, don’t tell me it’s really some dress-up skit!?”

Kasou Taishou: Kasou Taishou is a semi-annual show on NTV in which various amateur groups perform short skits, which are rated by a panel of judges. Especially in recent years, many of the skits have revolved around clever methods of “faking” cinematic special effects on a live stage. The show is hosted by Kinichi Hagimoto and Shingo Katori. Worldwide, the most famous of these skits, and among the most successful at “fake special effects” was a skit which is widely known as “Matrix ping pong”.

      1. Nah I just got sometime from raising my kid so I was gonna trans Duke daughter but I saw someone already do it so I took this which was last on my reading list will try it though later when I get some free time

                  1. On this note, I recommend you check out ‘A Survivor is Born’ by Heather Sinclair.
It is sadly untouched since 2014, but the 3 chapters it has (Slightly over 30k words) are still a VERY nice read.
It is an AU where Taylor gets Tomb Raider 2013’s Lara’s INGAME abilities, after she replacing Lara in said game.
Meaning ridiculous endurance, strength, and stamina despite her frame (Gaining an enhanced Healing Ability to explain some of it.). The ability to use anything she gets her hands on, as if she had always wielded the weapons. Crafting abilities. And her ‘Survival Sight’, taken to 11.
And of course, the absolute Steel Will needed to go through Yamatai and its Population of Cannibals, Insane Cultists, and Undead Samurai. Not to mention the Sun Queen herself, and come out on top.

Without all the angst that Cutscene Lara faced in the game, which personally (Although realistic) was rather jarring in the usual Gameplay/Storyline Segregation.
Seriously, Lara literally mowed down hundreds of people Gameplay wise, whereas Cutscene Lara constantly gets taken down like nothing.
Taylor just goes through the enemies with apparently more ease than a lawnmower goes through said overgrown lawn.

                    1. Keep going, Worm is amazing. I’d advise to read until the sixth or seventh arc before deciding whether or not you’d like to read the rest of it (should only take about a week for the full thing). Around that point is where things start to come into perspective.

But don’t trust me: Worm has a higher rating on Goodreads than literally any of the Harry Potter series books, with >2k ratings so it’s not just Wibblicious telling his friends to rate him highly.

  1. This was amazing!!!! I laughed a lot!! Also, yay, Reika!! You FINALLY get to bully someone!!!! Maybe you don’t have to worry about your stomach pains from stress anymore….

    Thanks so much ani-ue~~~~~

  2. Thank you for the chapter. And lol. Reika looks such a badass here. Did she just call Katsuragi gay in a way? LMAO

  3. Thanks for the chapter :D

    Reika-sama is back <3

I had never realised there was that many Worm fanfictions… Well, I guess I'm going to read the ones I haven't read yet.
Taylor with Coil's power sounds really interesting (even if the world is now effectively doom to fall in her hands…)

    1. It’s been really popular for a couple of years now on the Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity and Questionable Questing forums, so yes, the backlog is quite huge by now.

  4. Ahh~ Great to have you back, by the way… I just need a reminder of who Katsuragi is… 😅 I tried searching the past chapters But I couldn’t find anything…😋

      1. …Haha I can’t remember when he showed up but that makes much more sense now, thanks! And good luck with school.

  5. Waa.. Thank you so much, Este-san! Finally! Got to read a new chapter of Reika-chan..😄 already missed this story so much..😍 Reika is so cute like always. Her antics is a funny and hilarious one😁just wonderful!😄😊

  6. Nothing like implying someones gay to throw them off their stride. Surprised she aimed for the shin though, and not a little higher.

Also, how can you recommend Constellations (which is awesome, shiny goodness) but not Hunter? Same great author, but admittedly the polar opposite of Constellations on the happiness scale (it is a Bloodborne cross after all). Ongoing, like Constellations.

I’d also say you need to read Burn Up by JinglyJangles if you haven’t already. Short, but complete. And amazing.

And lastly, I probably shouldn’t recommend this one by Hotdog Vendor, but I’m going to anyway :P

    1. As for why I chose Constellations and not Hunter, Worm itself is pretty dark already so I figure that fanfiction in the other direction would do a lot of good. That’s why I have so much cute stuff in my 5 favourite recs.

Plus, while you can pretty much read Constellations without having played Ookami, Hunter doesn’t make much sense at all if you don’t know anything about Bloodborne. Actually scratch that. It still doesn’t make too much sense lol.

Incidentally, I read all of Hunter listening to Cleric Beast.

      1. Been away for a bit, I’d forgotten just how much you liked Worm.

All pretty valid points. I like most of Harbin’s work as well, and “not quite lucid” describes JinglyJangles stuff perfectly. I actually prefer Glassmaker to Burn Up, but its even odder so probably not something I’d recommend off the bat.

Chances are you’ve probably already read them, but two others that you might like are Firefly by Shujin, and Maharal by joethirteen. Maharal is sadly dead, and Firefly is apparently dead or on hiatus (the last chapter written makes a good end to the story anyway). Both are very much worth reading regardless.

I think you need a worm recommended reading page somewhere :D

          1. Much the same, it’s my favorite Ack fic. He seems to come in three flavors – really good (recoil), or not so good (SI’s who do everything right and fix all the things) , or “oh god, where’s the brain bleach” (I’m still not sure why I signed up for QQ 🤦)

            Liked by 1 person

            1. Yeah, I know they’re really popular but Security! and Hope Comes to BB weren’t really all that enjoyable, and Trump Card was straddling this odd line between crack fic and not. Which isn’t always that bad, but the crack wasn’t that exciting (and the OOC writing) sort of ruined the rest for me.

But yeah, Recoil was great. I wish he updated more. The whole Lisa kiss sequences thing was really nice too.

          1. Yep, loved it. Sadly, it is pining for the fjords as well :-(

Hmm…Gambit is something more recent and ongoing that you might like too. Wasn’t a huge fan of Fantasy Ra’s other stuff (Exiled was enjoyable enough though, and did like some of his one offs), but liking how this one is going so far even if it’s only a few chapters in.

            1. I might have to give Exiled another chance. I dropped it very early in because it seemed a bit too amateurish but I’ll try it again tonight or tomorrow. I did like the premise of Begin Again after all.

Oh, I should have added Queen of the Swarm to my ‘longer stories’ recs. That wasn’t too bad at all. At least no worse than Queen of Blood and stuff. Plus, romantic Lisa/Taylor. That’s kind of rare. You get Amy/Taylors all the time.

Oh, speaking of Amy/Taylor, have you read that two-chapter NSFW one called Oops? Surprisingly good writing.

  7. Does anyone know which chapter Reika sama’s first interaction with Katsuragi was in?

I’m drawing nothing from my memory as to why Katsuragi acts this way towards Reika-sama~

  8. I almost didn’t believe it when I went in to do my daily routine of checking if this novel had updated to see it actually did lol. My patientnce of quietly waiting has paid off. I hope your finals went well!

*stands up and claps and cheers* You go Reika!!! What a rude little snot that Enjou boy fan is. I was pleasantly surprised when she gave him a good kick and a noogie. And those scathing words! Oh Reika you did a great job in humiliating him.

  9. She’s maturing and integrating with her current self, it’s always good to watch this subtle changes~ thank you for the chapter, Este and welcome back! I was suffering without my oniisama dose~

  10. Thanks so much for that! I hope it all went well for you.

BTW I did read Worm thanks to your recommendation (“reading worm” pretty much summarizes everything I did last year second term), but I haven’t started reading its fanfics yet.

Which would you recommend that are rather short? I don’t want to summarize this term as “reading worm fanfics” : P

  11. Who is wakaba chan? Is there any chance of doing a footnote with a reminder to who some of the characters are since its been a while or even having a character sheet?

  12. Welcome back Fluffy-sama. XD Glad to see you took a break after your hardships with your master’s. Thanks for the chapter!

  13. Happy that this updated again. I remembered wondering about this a while ago.

Hello again, Miss Sheeprabbit and welcome back. This is my first time commenting in this story but your return from RL now seemed like a fitting time to do so.

Thank you for translating this story.

…Well, that sounded so formal and all, but really, I just wanted to share the fact that the first few seconds of seeing Worm fics in my Reika page had me wondering if my tabs were spilling over each other. :D

Also, I loved Constellations and Go Gently out of those. Wished Go Gently would return.

    Anyway, thanks again for translating.

    See you. *bows politely*

    1. Not an awe-inspiring piece like some of the ones above, but it’s fairly good. An example of the crossposting would be Crime & Commitment, which exists on both spacebattles & ffdotnet, alongside Queen of Blood and many others (Timelooping Tinker, etc.).

Surprisingly little badly-written slash-fiction in the Worm fandom/fanfics. Maybe Worm just didn’t appeal to that demographic? It’s a shame.

  14. Thank you for the chapter! And welcome back!!!
Also thank you for worm fanfic recs, haven’t read any for a while so looking forward to it.

I wonder if you read Go Gently by Shana the Short? It has kind of light novel/manga feel to it. And best oblivious Taylor fic ever.

  15. As a Wildbow fan, I must recommend his most recent work, Twig. Some time around arc 9 or 10, it surpassed Worm as my favorite.

  16. Welcome back(?)!!! Thank you very much for the chapter!

I guess it’s time to reread everything from chapter 1 :( I can’t remember any of the names and characters besides Reika 😢 hahaha I blame my goldfish memory :(

Oh and thank you also for the recommendation! I’ve been looking for something else to read recently :)) I’ll give worm a go.

  17. There goes HO HO HO!!!

Thanks for translating, as well as the recommendation, cuz I was running out of decent reads.

  18. Thank you so much for the chapter Este!! I hope all is going well with your Masters Program. So excited to see Reika again~ <3 Also might have to check out this Worm series you are so heavily recommending..?

  19. Welcome back, Este-sama.. 😄
Soooo glad to see that the chapter was released.. I missed Reika-sama sorely..

And also, who was Satomi-kun again? I do get that he’s the other Class Rep, but I can’t remember if they were Class Reps together before this year or not.. 😅

  20. Onii-sama! Thanks for the chapter woooo~~ And this so called “worm” you highly recommend. I shall most definitely take a look at it ~~. ANd I saw your roblems with wordpress! (lol) Hope things are better now Onii-sama!

  21. Reika’s… evolving! Love it when she acts like that, mix of ojousama and her internal thoughts, expressed physically in their full glory xD But of course, gotta check whether there’s anyone around before unleashing her full wrath :D She’s really adapting to, and making full use of her character, and even throwing in a OHOHOHO in there too. Brilliant.

And then when she “…headed right back” after that kid’s rude exclamation,, oh that was amazing… Haha, that fool of kid really underestimates Reika. Pfff, he thought he had a free pass to say whatever because she was walking off already? Heh, nope, Reika is back to prove you wrong xD
And that witty response too… Whew…

Yup, this is one of the parts where you really gotta admire that personality of hers, where she’s willing to act like that when she’s sure no one’s watching
