Chapter 25 – Edim and Miscalculations

“Intruders! Don’t let them get away!”

“Disintegrate, you traaash!”

“Gobaaaagh!”

I continued onwards, using magic bullets to clear the way of mercenaries…

One after another, I slew them and slew them.

But by the time I reached the top floor the number of weaklings had doubled.

I was breathing hard, and there were still so many of them.

On any other day I could have managed without a thought…

Even though I was feeling a bit better after Jessica’s blood it was a far cry from being fully recovered.

After all, I couldn’t kill her, so I only took a little.

I needed so much more.

“W-What are you…?”

“I-, I know what she is. T-That strength can only mean a vampire. She’s a demon!”

Tsk!

So they realised.

If the Fiend realised that a demon was attacking then there was a chance that he would run.

I had to hurry.

But having realised my lack of humanity, the mercenaries were all keeping a distance and firing magical bullets from afar now.

Kuh, nothing could be worse.

My strength was being drained and having Jessica here wasn’t helping.

She was as good as useless after all.

Actually worse than useless since I had to protect her too.

“This is as far as we go, Jessica. You have to escape first.”

“No! How could I leave you when you’re so exhausted!”

“U-Umm, you know. That’s kind of why I want you to leave. It’s actually pretty hard fighting while protecting you.”

“S-Sorry for being useless…”

“It’s fine, just go!”

“Y-Yeah… Yeah! I should go call Tilea-san after all.”

I told you not to do anything unnecessary!

Anything but that!

I’m going to be executed by the leadership, you know.

“Jessica, you should leave Tilea-sa… n out of this.”

“B-But…”

“I’ll be fine, Jessica. If it gets too dangerous I’ll leg it. You should… Ah, right. You need to look after the rest of the girls who escaped the prison. The guards will probably catch some of them.”

“T-There were some kids after all…”

“See?”

“Okay. Got it. Leave everyone to me.”

“I’ll be counting on you.”

“Don’t die, Edim.”

With that, Jessica disappeared down the stairs.

Phew…

That was one burden gone.

I sighed in relief.

Ordinarily I would have looked after her myself.

She belonged to Camilla-sama after all.

But a direct order from Tilea-sama took precedence, and I would have failed the mission at this rate.

Trying to achieve everything would have me failing both.

It wasn’t optimal but it was the best I could do.

There was another benefit to having Jessica gone.

I didn’t have to stick to humane methods any longer.

I let my instincts as a vampire take over.

A happy smile spread across my face as I pounced into the crowd of guards.

“Guahhh! S-Save mee!”

I was going to drink my fill.

On any other day I’d never touch blood like this.

It tasted disgusting of course, but for tonight I wouldn’t waste a drop.

If I managed to recover even half of my strength before reaching the Fiend it would be most satisfactory.

“Just dieeeeee!” somebody screamed.

I had been taken off guard, and magical bullets were flying towards me from a blind spot.

Tsk!

Damn trash!

Because I had been in the middle of drinking blood I was slow to react.

I was trying to dodge them, but a few would probably hit.

I had to bite my lip and tried to endure as they hit me, but to my surpise…

…It was the small fry who were blown away.

Those were magic bullets!

Had Dalf come for me…?

Had he been worried about my health?

I hadn’t forgotten that Ortissio had injured him too.

It was impressive that he had come as reinforcements.

If I was being honest, I wasn’t confident in taking on both the Fiend and Nyger, depleted as I was.

As expected of my most trusted subordinate.

I turned a gaze of trust to him.

“Dalf, you did well in com――”

“It is I, Jayjay.”

“…”

“Is something the matter, Edim-sama? I have infiltrated this mansion alone on Dalf-sama’s orders.”

…Well, it wasn’t what I was expecting, but he was still a second-order vampire of my line.

“We break through in one go, Jayjay.”

“Understood.”

We moved onwards as our enemies fell prey to his magic bullets.

It impressed upon me again the importance of support.

We were making great progress.

Before long we entered a much better decorated area.

This would be the Fiend’s room then.

It was a luxurious place.

All around, I could see signs of unnecessary spending.

Well, not that it compared to the Underground Empire, but still…

“Jayjay, your role is to hold Nyger back. I will use that chance to assassinate the Fiend.”

“As you wish. However…”

“Oh? Do you lack confidence in doing so?”

“No, milady, I simply wanted to ask what the consequences were if I failed to simply hold him back and defeated him by accident.”

“…That’s quite bold of you. Nyger has served many years as the Fiend’s right-hand-man.”

“Ha ha ha. Edim-sama, magical history is literally my speciality. You needn’t remind me.”

Kuh, he was like this as a teacher, and becoming a vampire hadn’t fixed that at all.

Always thinking he was more capable than he really was.

“As long as you understand. I only need a minute. Grab Nyger’s attention!”

“Understood. Today is the day that Nyger dies.”

I wasn’t exactly confident about this, but time was running short. And the bigger issue was that it would be a close call on my own.

Relying on Jayjay was my only real choice.

I entered Gordon’s room and looked around.

Four to the left, three to the right, five in the back…

And there were now people coming up the stairs behind us.

Worse, each of them seemed stronger than the rabble we’d seen previously.

It made the job a lot harder.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea to kill them off first, but…

“So you’re the demon that’s invaded my estate,” smirked a man with the face of a scoundrel.

So this was Gordon the Fiend…

In that case, the old man standing there protectively was Nyger.

There was something about the way he held himself that separated Nyger from the rabble.

Jayjay was going to struggle.

The Fiend needed to be put down quickly so that I could help fight Nyger.

Otherwise things would end badly for Jayjay.

“Jayjay, buy me time. Hold out for one minute.”

“Understood.”

With that, I closed in on the Fiend with lightning speed.

I intended to use my remaining mana in one attack.

A single stroke to slay the Fiend, and then Nyger.

“Wha-!? Fast!”

“Slow.”

Before he could even raise his sword, my hand was at his neck――

“Guuh!”

I had been attacked from behind.

What happened?

I turned around only to find Nyger firing magical bullets.

Wha-, it hadn’t even been ten seconds!

What was Jayjay…?

“E-Edim-sama. M-, My sincere… Guhah!”

S-, So useless.

I asked him for just one minute.

For him to have fallen within ten seconds was…

Nyger had cut off all four of his limbs.

A human would be dead for sure, but as a vampire he was still alive.

Not that I would care if somebody this useless kicked the bucket.

Actually I’d prefer it that way!

“Don’t move, vampire! If you so much as twitch I’ll kill him,” Nyger aimed at the fallen Jayjay.

“Hah?” I scoffed, “Are you trying to take him as a hostage? By all means, kill the eyesore.”

“Huhu, it appears that he doesn’t have much worth as one.”

Nyger laughed fearlessly.

I considered him.

Jayjay might have been a second-degree kin of mine, but he was still a vampire. Nyger had taken him down instantly.

If I considered the strength of the earlier magical bullets as well, the conclusion was that it was Nyger that I should be wary of, not Gordon.

“Vampire girl, you’ll pay for stepping your dirty feet into my mansion!” Gordon spat.

Yes, he wasn’t the real threat here.

In fact, he acted just like a weakling.

I was beginning to think that he was the sort that couldn’t win without dirty tricks and ambushes.

“So the legendary Fiend was actually you,” I said to Nyger.

“What?” goggled Gordon. “It is I who is the legendary Fiend! I bring chaos and destruction to――”

“Silence, clown! You lack the power. Do not interrupt.”

“Clown!?” he screamed. “Nyger, don’t kill this vampire girl. Capture her and I’ll give her a living hell!”

“Gordon-sama, defeating her is one thing, but in my humble opinion she is too powerful to be captured safely,” Nyger argued.

“What!? Both of us are here! Even a demon is nothing to us!”

“This vampire girl is different from the false demons we have faced so far.”

“Mmngh… Is it really too difficult to capture her?”

“Yes. And I believe that now may be our only chance to do so. For whatever reason, she is exhausted. Were that not the case, I humbly believe that even killing her would be impossible.”

“Ngngn… I wanted to try having some fun with a demon girl.”

“Gordon-sama. This will only bring us future trouble if we do not kill her now.”

“F-Fine.”

The two of them attacked in tandem; Gordon with a sword, and Nyger with magical bullets.

But an instant later, Nyger moved in for close-ranged combat.

His techniques were sudden and ever-changing.

Worse yet, Gordon’s subordinates began firing arrows and magical bullets en masse.

It was a struggle to focus on Nyger.

If only Jayjay could have bought me a few seconds…

“Get up, Jayjay! Get up and draw their attention!”

“Ugohgogoh…”

“Stop babbling and move! Be of some use before you die!”

“I-It’s impossible, E-Edim-sama…”

“Impossible? Impossible!? At the Academy you were the one who kept saying ‘It’s only impossible because you think it’s impossible.’ Get up. Get up and take the enemies to hell with you!”

“Edim-sama, m-may the… fortunes of war be with you…”

With those last words, he collapsed into unconsciousness.

So… So useless.

Just fucking die already!

While I was being assaulted from all sides, I suddenly felt Nyger’s mana gathering…

Something bad was coming.

I promptly took defensive manoeuvres.

“Nuoooh, Ghost Rider![Ghost Wave Magic Punch!]

Nyger dashed forward with all his power concentrated into his fist.

T-This was bad…

I backpedalled to avoid it, and only managed by the skin of my teeth.

The sound of the air parting was audible by my ear.

What speed.

It was unbelievable for a human.

And what power.

No vampire could have withstood a direct blow from that.

Before my eyes was a human who could have met me on my best day.

Strong.

No wonder the Fiend was so famous.

“Hahaha! Take that! And that!”

And while I was busy paying attention to Nyger, Gordon always attacked with exquisite timing.

The years they spent together wasn’t for show.

I was left panting hard.

The situation was getting worse and worse for me.

And I couldn’t afford a protracted battle.

Haah, haah, damn it!

If only it had been Dalf, instead of that useless…

I considered contacting Dalf.

It would take a few seconds to start up the telepathy.

To buy myself some time, I waited for an opening and closed the distance between Gordon and I.

“Diiee!”

“Guaah!”

I tore off Gordon’s finger.

Alright.

Now I just needed a few seconds to…

“Naive!”

“Guahh!”

D-Damn.

Just that instant was enough for Nyger to score a direct hit.

I was sent flying.

My right arm was destroyed past the ability of my body to regenerate.

Urgh, what force…

Thanks to my weariness and lapse in judgement, things were looking even grimmer.

Of course a veteran expert like Nyger would never miss an opening.

Gordon and his goons ended up routing me.

I was covered in blood from all the wounds now.

“Haah, haa, haa, you’ve caused us a lot of trouble, you bitch…”

“Gordon-sama, please do not approach her carelessly. We should finish her from afar.”

“Wait, Nyger. That whore tore my finger off. She needs to suffer, or I won’t be able to sleep at night.”

“However…”

“I’ll keep your words in mind. Hey, you lot, she’s yours. Strip her, skewer her, whatever you want. Just don’t give her an easy death!”

“Whaooo! Can we really?”

Gordon’s underlings swarmed me with vulgar cheers.

“S-Stop it…”

“Kuhihihi, what happened to your attitude? Aren’t you an almighty vampire?”

“Oi, oi, is that shaking I see? A brat is just a brat, huh.”

“Haah, I’m done waiting. Let’s hurry up and jam it in already.”

The voices and smells were making me nauseous.

“Let go of me…”

“Oho? You’re bloodied and battered and you still wanna act tough?”

“Silence…”

“Ku ku, hey, let’s strip her and do her already. The arrogant act is really starting to piss me off.”

The insolent mob began pulling at my clothes.

“D-, Don’t touch me, you filth… I belong to Camilla-sama…”

“What are you on about? You belong to us. And you had better believe that we have a lot in store for you.”

“Unforgivable…”

“Heh, what are you-”

“You fucking amoebaaa! Get your filthy hands off of meeee!”

With a roar I discharged the mana in my body and showered my surroundings with blood.

Bloody Mary[Demonic Bloodsucker].

My ultimate technique.

It involved manipulating the blood in your body with mana to create violent bursts of it.

The result was an unavoidable spray of blood that cut through everything in my surroundings.

Armour, helmets, none of it would help you.

The blade of blood could cut through steel like nothing.

I can’t believe I used my trump card on these guys.

It was my strong technique to be sure… but it came with the drawback of being helpless.

After using it I couldn’t move for a while.

The loss of blood made my body feel like lead each time.

I wouldn’t have minded collapsing right there, but I needed to confirm Gordon’s death.

Fighting off my intense desire to sleep, I forced my leaden limbs to move.

I was surrounded by body pieces

Limbs, entrails, and an ocean of blood all around.

These fools had probably passed away without knowing what happened.

But these were just his lackeys.

Haah, haah, haah…

Gordon had been at the back…

I struggled in that direction and found a blood-soaked Nyger.

But Gordon’s corpse was nowhere to be seen.

I-Impossible.

He was gone.

Gone.

Why…?

Panicked, I looked around the room but there was no trace of him.

Gordon had definitely been here.

It was in range of my attack.

Did he escape?

No, that should have been impossible.

My attack wasn’t so slow that you had a chance to run from it.

Did that mean he sensed it before I did it?

Kuh, I had to contact my kin…

Telepathy activate!

『Haah, haah, haah, Dalf! Answer me!』

『Edim-sama, how is the mission…?』

『…He escaped. Have you seen any movement on your end?』

『No… But there was a report of a strange stagnation of mana.』

Stagnation?

I see.

Gordon, you fucker. You used teleportation magic!

『Dalf, I trust that you dispatched soldiers to investigate?』

『O-Ortissio-sama was afraid of disrupting the encirclement, so he wouldn’t give us permission. Even sending Jayjay took a very long time.』

T-, That incompetent idiot!

Thanks to him…

『Dalf, immediately dispatch a unit to the location. This time, do it no matter what Ortissio-sama might say.』

『By your will.』

Haa, haa, it had already been a few minutes though.

Even if he sent a unit, Gordon wouldn’t be there.

“Damn it!” I cursed in Zenonese.

I let him escape…

Chapter 24 – Edim and Jessica Team Up

“Edim, let’s hurry up and bring everyone out of here!”

Jessica, the goody two shoes.

I should have known she’d say something like this…

I was starting to feel down at how nothing was working out right.

Haah.

I had wanted to use all their blood to heal myself.

But if I did that I’d lose Jessica’s trust.

I was stuck playing the role of the “vampire who had a human heart” after all.

Still, this was all to stay in-line with Tilea-sama’s scheme.

As long as I had no idea what was riding on this, there was no way I could hinder it.

I suppose I had no choice.

I cut through all of the chains and freed the women and children, one by one.

Snap.

Snap.

The room was filled with the sound of breaking metal links..

“Ah, t-the chains… Am, am I saved…?”

“T-, Thank you, big sis.”

“T-, Thank you… Thank you!”

And now they were getting noisy again.

Stop it already.

You’re going to call the guards over, damn it!

No, the guards were coming soon anyway.

So the escaping women would have been noticed anyway?

I had to hurry.

“Jessica, do you know where the Fiend is?”

“No. I was only just brought here too.”

“I see…”

What could I do?

If I went around beating small fry up for information I’d run out of stamina.

But if I hid myself and looked for him I’d never have enough time.

If I took too long Ortidiot would come barging in.

“Edim, could it be that you were planning to kill Gordon?”

“Yeah, that’s right. I know you’re a goodie-two-shoes. But even if you’re against it, this is one thing that I――”

“I’m not against it! T-, That cruel man. I-In the plaza he killed so many people. The desperate parents of the girls being taken away. Brothers who tried to protect their sisters. So many… So many people… I-, It’s unforgivable. If you don’t kill him, then I will!” Jessica screamed.

She was normally such a kind girl too…

Gordon was quite the villain, it seemed.

He had picked on the wrong person, though.

Getting ahead of himself and laying his hands on Tilea-sama’s belongings.

It was unthinkable.

For that, I would give him a taste of hell.

After releasing the women in the cell, Jessica and I searched for Gordon’s room.

Unfortunately, not only was the place like a maze but it was also crawling with mercenary guards.

Progress was slow.

“Jessica, we won’t break any ground by keeping hidden like this. I’m going to be a bit more overbearing.”

“Wait. Edim, are you okay? You’ve looked terrible all night.”

Sharp as always.

She noticed even though she had been distracted with our reunion.

She was right of course.

I was on the verge of collapse, dizzy and getting worse all the time.

I was still feeling the regret from not healing myself with the women.

“You’re right. I’m not at my best, Jessica. But I still have to kill Gordon no matter what.”

“Edim, I think you should consider a temporary retreat. I can’t forgive Gordon either, but I don’t want you to die.”

Ugh, so annoying.

Retreat was unacceptable.

I couldn’t report a failure.

I’d probably be executed on the spot if I did.

“It’s fine. I’m a vampire. I don’t die so easily.”

“B-But… I-, I know! We should have Tilea-san help us. You know how strong she is, right? Tilea-san could beat him in a flash.”

Even more unacceptable!

It was unthinkable.

Failing the missing, and then getting your superior to wipe your backside for you…

If I did something so shameful the leadership would lynch me.

No, it would probably be an even worse torture that awaited me.

Uu, scary…

“Jessica, let’s not get Tilea-sa…n involved in this. I owe her my life. Plus, we can’t delay it. The longer we do, the more victims there’ll be. If we don’t kill him tonight, more girls are going to be violated and murdered.”

“Y-You’re right. I can’t just rely on Tilea-san for everything. And Gordon is still ordering girls to come to him. We have to save them.”

“Exactly.”

“But are you really going to be okay? I’ll do my best to help, so don’t overdo it, okay?”

“Yeah, got it. Anyway, about the strategy I mentioned earlier…”

“Strategy…?”

“It’s nothing complicated. Basically while I hide in the shadows, you lure one of the guards over. I’ll interrogate him and find out where Gordon is.”

“Finding information quietly is a good plan. But how am I going to lure someone over?”

“You seduce them, obviously.”

“Ehhhh!? I-I’m going to be doing it again…?”

“Huh? You’ve seduced someone before?”

“Y-Yeah. When I was fighting the demons with Tilea-san…”

“Well if you’ve done it before, then I’ll be relying on you. Pull somebody over for me.”

Of course I could just run around haphazardly creating vampires as well. The chaos incited would serve me well.

But in that case Jessica would doubt that I actually was a vampire with a human heart…

Hahhh.

Honestly, the reason we need such a convoluted plan is because of you, Jessica.

“Uuu, I don’t wanna.”

“Isn’t this better than using violence?”

“Y-Yeah. I don’t like it, but it’s to defeat Gordon, right?” she consented.

Now we just needed to wait for a target to come along.

After waiting in the shadows for a few minutes…

A bearded, muscular guy who looked the type to be a lech came along.

Exactly the type of pervert you’d expect to love Jessica’s type.

“Alright, Jessica. So what you’re going to do us lure him into the dark. After that I’ll ask him where Gordon is.”

“Uu, can I really do this?”

“You’ll be fine. Stupid-looking men like that love childish bodies like yours the most.”

“Kuh! Even you, Edim!? I-I’m still growing, okay…” she whined.

Having said that it seemed like she had found her determination because she pulled her top down around her shoulders and began sashaying towards the man.

Now is the time for your washboard to shine, Jessica.

“H-, Heyy~ M-Mister?”

“What? Girl! How did you get in here!?”

“M-, My body feels so hot right now. Haaah~ Say, w-, wanna do something nice together?”

Jessica was acting as hard as she could!

Well done, Jessica! Although I wished you could have looked a bit more natural doing it…

Ah well, it was naive little Jessica after all.

I suppose asking for a convincing seduction was a bit much.

“What are going on about, you snot-nosed brat? Get back to your damned cell!”

“Eh!? U-Um, s-something nice…”

“Gordon-sama’s strike zone is too huge. What’s good about brats like these?”

Jessica turned to me in tears.

Ah, so it was hopeless, huh…

I guess she just wasn’t sexy enough after all.

Ah well.

I wasn’t happy about it, but I suppose I’d play the bait instead.

I signalled Jessica with my hands.

Shoulders dropped, she trudged back over to me.

“Uu, I said I couldn’t do it…”

“Yeah. You don’t have enough sex appeal. I’ll take over.”

“Wha-, E-Edim…?”

Jessica came back to my side and we switched placed.

I exposed my shoulders and pulled up my skirt a little.

“Hello, mister~ How about it? Wanna have a little fun with me?”

“Another woman… What the fuck are the guards even doing?>”

“Come on~ Over here~”

“Look, I’m not interested in brats like――”

I casually brought emphasis to my cleavage.

How’s that?

Jessica doesn’t have a ravine like this, does she?

Although I was no Tilea-sama, I think I had pretty good proportions for my age.

“Not bad. I thought you were just some kid but, you’re… Alright, let uncle show you a good time.”

Alright, I got him.

Huhu, now I just needed to lure him into the dark to interrogate him.

I smugly gave Jessica a sidelong glance.

Aha, she looked mortified.

I could see her shoulders trembling.

“Come on, uncle, this way――”

I beckoned him into the shadows like a dancer, and watched as he came closer and closer.

“Guhehehe~ Let’s have a taste fir―― Mn!? It stinks! Don’t you know what a bath is!? Disgusting!”

“Eh…?”

He was almost there.

But his nose twitched and he backed off.

Stink?

W-, Why?

Wait! S-Speaking of which, that homeless guy stank as well…

It was horrible.

It had been like biting into a corpse.

Had that given me bad breath?

“It stinks, it stinks, you fucking stink! I hate brats, but I hate unhygienic women as well. Piss off back to your cell!”

“Y-, You fuckerr!”

Unhygienic!?

How dare a lowly human speak to me like that!

My hand shot out and held his neck in a vicegrip.

“Guoohh! W-What the hell is this power? I-I can’t breathe. Gahh! S-Save me!”

“H-, Huh? What’s going on?” called another guard.

Thanks to the first one’s noise they were beginning to gather.

T-This was bad.

I had to get my answers now!

“Oi. If you don’t want me to strangle you to death then tell me where Gordon is!”

“Guh, w-who would, tell you――?”

“Hmph.”

I increased the strength of my grip.

I could hear the start of his bones creaking.

“Guahh! I-I’ll speak! Cough, cough. Please stop this,” he wheezed before telling me what I wanted to know.

Since I was done, I dropped him onto the floor.

He shouldn’t have pissed me off to begin with.

According to him, Gordon’s room was on the top floor.

As long as we kept going up, we’d find him.

“Jessica, I know where he is now. He’s on the top floor.”

“…Yeah. But why did you start yelling? I heard you guys arguing about a smell or something but――”

“J-, Jessica, we’ve got other things to worry about. We need to take him down already.”

“You’re right.”

Together, the two of us evaded the encroaching guards as we made our way to the top floor.

Unfortunately the further we went, the more guards there were.

We couldn’t continue like this for long.

On the other hand I didn’t have the stamina to mow down all of these weaklings either.

“Jessica, we can’t just keep running past them. Can I count on you to clear the path for me?”

“Y-Yeah.”

Her mana surged as she prepared for battle.

Alright.

Jessica would take care of them for me, and I’d save my stamina for the coming battle instead.

Phew.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.

Circulating the mana through my body, I prepared to recover.

I continued with the technique for a few minutes.

After a while I began to feel a little better.

Opening my eyes, I began setting out for the top floor again.

How many people had Jessica taken care of?

Wai-, she hadn’t taken care of a single one!

Actually, wasn’t she kind of in trouble?

Jessica was firing magical bullets at the mercenaries but seemed to be having trouble finishing the job.

Actually, Jessica was being toyed with by their magical bullets and arrows.

Hahh, humans really were weak.

To think there was a time in my life when I was seriously competing with creatures like these…

Ah, oops.

Camilla-sama was about to lose a belonging if I didn’t do something.

Jessica, you’re not allowed to break without permission.

Haah.

Damnit.

This was going to be a hit to my stamina for sure.

I generated a few magical bullets before firing them upon the mercenaries.

“Kuaah!”

“W-What is that power!?”

“H-Hiiee! How can magical bullets be so strong!?”

It hadn’t taken much to crush their morale.

Unfortunately that hadn’t translated into deaths.

A number of them were injured but I couldn’t defeat them while holding back like this.

Their numbers weren’t going to decrease at this rate.

Trying to converse my mana would only waste time.

Haah, haah…

I was still so dizzy though.

This time I circulated my mana to the limit to overwhelm the guards.

I had almost run dry now, but the two of us would have been defeated otherwise.

“Get back, Jessica.”

“B-But…”

“Just listen. I can’t let you die! Get back!”

“Y-Yeah.”

After she did as I told, I faced off against the mercenaries.

There were only a few floors left until the top.

As long as I could get rid of these small-fries I was basically there.

“Come on, you garbage. Those of you who want to die, step forward!”

“”Waaaaaaaaaah!”” they screamed, as they charged me half-mad.

It seemed that the pressure I put on them earlier had caused them to fall into a panic.

Haha, it seemed that I had some hope now.

Had they taken up proper military formation I might have been screwed.

But like this they were just target practice.

I fired.

The lot of them danced around like fools.

A few of them came at me with swords, so I snapped them before snapping their necks in turn.

Not long afterwards…

Haah, haah, haah…

I did it.

Somehow, I managed to finish off all the soldiers on this floor.

Uu, d-damn it.

Quite a lot of my energy had been expended.

If I collapsed here I wasn’t sure I’d get up again.

I leant against a pillar to catch my breath.

Huh.

Where was Jessica, anyhow?

She hadn’t died, had she?

She had gotten behind me but I was too busy with the guards to pay attention to her afterwards.

“Hahh, haah, J-, Jessica, are you okay…?”

“Yeah. Thank you.”

“T-, Thank goodness…”

“I’m sorry, Edim. All I’m doing is being a deadweight. H-Hey, are you really okay?”

“Haah, haah, I-, I said I was fine. M-, More importantly, we need to hurry.”

“We can’t! Edim, I know you’re strong but you’re overdoing it. Let’s rest first. I can’t see you beating Gordon in your state.”

Perhaps she had a point.

My stamina wasn’t increasing, but the enemy numbers would.

I needed blood.

And all the better if it came from a beauty.

And there was a beautiful girl right in front of me.

I wanted it.

If I didn’t drink, my power would never come back to me.

Jessica belonged to Camilla-sama, though.

I couldn’t lay a hand on her.

Unfortunately…

I had to apologise to Camilla-sama.

In order to realise Tilea-sama’s order I had no choice but to do so.

Camilla-sama, please forgive my trespass.

“J-, Jessica, I need a favour…”

“What is it? Ask me anything.”

“Haah, haah, c-could you share some of your blood with me?”

“Eh!? T-That’s…”

“It’s fine. I won’t take all of it. I just need a little. Just a little…”

“O-, Okay… Just a little then.”

“Haah, haah, don’t worry, Jessica… I-, I wouldn’t ever kill you. We’re… friends, right?”

“Yeah. You’re right. We’re fine.”

All I had to do was invoke the ‘friend’ card and she was readily holding her arm out for me.

Huhu, how typical of her.

She was offering her blood to a vampire…

It was all the cuter to see that arm tremble just a little.

Relax, Jessica.

You belong to Camilla-sama.

I won’t kill you nor turn you.

I just want to enjoy you a little.

I took her arm into my hand and pulled her into my embrace.

And then I pierced my fangs into her soft neck.

“H-, Hey, Edim…?”

“W-, What is it? Haah, haah, you said that I could.”

“I-I did but, w-why are you touching me there? Hey-, wah!”

“Just bear with it for a bit… Vampires always get a little hot and bothered when drinking blood.”

And I still had horrible memories from those hobos.

I needed someone nice and pretty to clear those out.

“N-No, b-but, hahh, hahh, hang on…”

“Hahh, hahh… Y-, You’re adorable, Jessica. Just adorable…”

I kissed her adorable nape and chest between sips of her blood.

“Hahh, hey, t-that’s… Stop it! Stop!”

“Haah, haah, j-just hang on a little. This isn’t a bit deal.”

“Hic! No! You really have changed, Edim. You’re not a human…”

She was crying now.

Ah geez, had I gone too far?

I suppose the old Edim wouldn’t have done this, huh.

Well, since I was feeling better now, I suppose this was good enough?

“S-, Sorry, Jessica.”

“You’re horrible, Edim…”

“I really am sorry. It might sound like an excuse, but I kind of lose my mind while drinking blood.”

“Hic…”

“Come on, I’ll do anything, so forgive me. I’m feeling a lot better now that you shared some blood with me. Thank you.”

“…A-Are you better now?”

“Yeah. I really feel a lot better. Oh, I know! To apologise, how about I treat you to that Lintd Teahouse?”

“You still remember that place?”

“Of course I do. Didn’t you turn down my invitation because you had homework to do?”

“Uuu, uuu, you really do remember. Even though it happened before you turned… Uu, Edim…”

Jessica ran over and hugged me.

Haah, man I was tired.

What was this rollercoaster of tears, anger, and consolation?

“Do you forgive me?”

“Uu, only if you treat me to chiffon cake.”

“Fine, fine. I’ll treat you to as much as you want.”

“Ehehe, it’s a promise then. Maybe we should invite Tilea-san and the three of us can go together.”

Inviting Tilea-sama to go to a teahouse…

Jessica just dropped something difficult.

I wonder how jealous the leadership would be if I actually went through with it.

Chapter 23 – Edim and the Infiltration of the Fiend’s Estate

My gait was unsteady thanks to Ortissio.

Haah, haah.

P-, Perhaps I could throw it up.

I was exhausted but it would be a hundred times better than continuing like this.

I waited until Ortidiot couldn’t see me before forcing a finger down my throat.

Oerghh!

Uu, I’d die if Camilla-sama ever saw me like this.

It was disgraceful.

But I paid it no heed and threw my guts up.

I was so dizzy.

I had thrown up all the blood that I could.

It was a blessing that I had thrown up the sewage, but now I was lacking blood.

I was feeling anaemic.

Haah, haah…

This was bringing some memories to mind.

Specifically of when some unpleasant upperclassmen at the academy welcome party had forced me into downing one drink after another.

When I tried to refuse they called me an impudent brat.

Had I thrown up like this too, back then…?

It wasn’t a pleasant memory.

And it wasn’t just the once either.

After that day they continued giving me unreasonable requests.

I almost thought of dropping out, but then Jessica got the teachers involved and stopped it.

Jessica couldn’t help me now though.

I was going to fix this myself.

Damned if I was going down with Ortidiot because of this.

Trying to complete the mission in this condition would be a stretch though.

Admittedly the mission would have the highest success if I just left the infiltration up to Ortidiot.

It would also result in merits for him and demerits for me.

Tilea-sama had given me a direct order.

I’d have no standing in the army any longer if I had given up because I was feeling unwell.

Camilla-sama in particular would be disappointed beyond measure…

I couldn’t accept that.

This was all Ortidiot’s fault to begin with.

Why did I have to go through all this.

Why would I have to fail everybody because of him!

It was unacceptable.

This meant I only had one choice left.

I had to call in help from my kin.

Telepathy, activate!

『Can you hear me, Dalf?』 I asked. 『I need you to depart for here immedia――』

『M-My apologies, Edim-sama. The encirclement… Ortissio-sama has――』

W-, What have you done now, Ortidiot?

『What’s the matter, Dalf? What did Ortissio-sama do? Explain!』

『I-I sincerely apologise. Ortissio-sama is attacking Jin’s squad and Cass’ squad.』

H-, Haah!? What the fuck was he doing!?

Had he sunk so low as to attack his own allies!?

『Dalf, for now just――』

『I’m sorry, Edim-sama, Ortissio-sama is headed this way. I must――Guaah! Ortissio-sama, w-, what are you…?』

『D-Dalf? What’s wrong? What happened? Da-』

『Edim, you bitch! Why the fuck are your kin encircling the area? You better not be plotting to steal all the merits!』 came the roar in my mind.

Uu, my head hurt.

Ortidiot had forcefully hijacked Dalf’s transmission.

God, he was such an overbearing bastard.

Still, I understood the attack now.

So he was suspecting me of monopolising the achievements.

What a small-minded retard.

The reason I have them surrounding the mansion is to insure against your failing, idiot.

Obviously I couldn’t just say that though.

『I-, I apologise. I would never consider such a thing. I simply hoped to be of use to you, so I brought them there of my own accord.』

『You don’t understand a thing, Edim. Taking action beyond the scope of the plan will only hinder others.』

『I-, I see.』

『Listen well. My soldiers are perfectly surrounding the estate. There is no role for your kin here. Understood?』

『Yessir. But my kin are already there. Even in a ring surrounding your own troops is fine, so may I deploy them?1』

『Hmm. And I assume they won’t get in the way?』

『Of course, sir. They will be as low-key as possible. So if it’s fine with you…』

『Fine. Then we’ll station your men a kilometre away from here. Their units will fall under my command.』

『Yessir.』

『Also Jin and Cass, was it? Remove them from their units.』

『B-, But why? They’re two of the best warriors in their units.』

『Best warriors? With their meagre skills they dared obstruct me and told me that they wouldn’t listen to anyone’s orders but yours.』

『Wha-…』

『Honestly, those cocky little half-demons dared oppose a Division Commander like me. I can only interpret it as contempt for the Evil God Army!』

T-, Those idiots. Now even my loyalty to the Evil God Army would be questioned.

『M-My deepest apologies. I will strictly discipline them.』

『See that you do!』 he said before cutting the transmission.

Anyway, I knew what was going on now.

Haa…

In that case I couldn’t rely on my kin for reinforcements either.

Just one little mistake could send Ortidiot into another frenzy.

Telepathy, activate!

『Are you all right, Dalf?』

『Y-, Yes, milady. There is no issue.』

『For now just follow his orders. Pull back a kilometre and then do as Ortissio-sama says. Also have Cass and Jin fall back to headquarters.』

『Is that all right, Edim-sama? At this rate the encirclement will be controlled by them. If only you so wished we could stage a confrontation and――』

『Y-, You fooool! Stop thinking about useless things and immediately report to Ortissio-sama!』

『U-, Understood.』

After giving Dalf his instructions I tottered towards the estate.

M-, My body felt so heavy.

I barely had the strength to walk.

I felt like absolute hell. My kin weren’t here. Instead, I had Ortidiot.

Could I even break in at this rate?

According to my intelligence, the guards numbered only a few hundred, with nobody strong enough to mention.

Ordinarily I could just waltz in and take his head.

At the moment I was running on less than 30% of my normal strength, though.

If they swarmed me with numbers my stamina wouldn’t hold.

I suppose I had no choice.

I wasn’t happy about it, but I could gain entry by being one of Gordon’s girls.

Then I’d just ignore the weaklings and go for the prize.

With the plan settled I arrived at the gates.

Some guards noticed me and ran over.

“Stop there! What are you doing here at this time? Don’t you know this is Gordon-sama’s private estate?”

“U-Ummm, I was summoned here by Gordon-sama.”

The moment they heard that their expressions turned lecherous.

“I see. He did, did he… But you might be someone suspicious.”

“She might be, she might be. Hehe, perhaps we’ll do a little body check.”

With vulgar faces they moved to take my clothes off.

I-, I’ll kill you! My body belongs to Camilla-sama! It’s not something little fucks like you can touch!

I almost killed them on reflex… but barely restrained myself from attacking them.

Don’t be hasty, Edim. If you cause a fuss now it’ll turn into a battle with all of them. Your stamina can’t afford it.

Think. What else can you do?

“I-Is that okay? Touching me without permission…”

“W-What are you talking about! We were just doing a body search and――”

“Gordon-sama said he liked fresh girls. If I’m dirtied I have to tell him.”

“Wha-!? Are you threatening us!?”

“I’m just stating the facts. Gordon-sama has a short temper, and is especially ruthless with men. If he found out…”

“This is getting bad, bro. If he thought we touched one of his women…”

“Y-, You’re right.”

Phew.

I somehow managed to escape being touched by these wretches.

All they needed to do now was lead me to Gordon.

“Tsk. This way, girl.”

I was led straight into the residence.

There were mercenaries everywhere. Practically overflowing with guards.

The interior was cramped and confusing too. An anti-invasion measure.

From what I’d seen just now I wouldn’t surprised if rooms ahead were trapped.

A frontal assault was out of the question then.

I needed to guarantee this by getting them to lead me straight to him.

We continued walking for a while… down the steps of the dungeon.

“In here!”

Wha-, a prison!?

Wasn’t I to be led to the Fiend’s room?

“U-Umm, Gordon-sama summoned me. Why am I being put in a prison?”

“You go in the prison first. Then when Gordon-sama feels like it he’ll call you to his room. You might just be a little girl but we’ve had older female assassins before. You’re wrong if you think we’ll just bring you in.”

Tsk, damned Gordon.

Pretty wary of him.

Then again his dealings with women had gained himself quite some hatred.

There was probably no shortage of women willing to assassinate him.

“Oi.”

“What is it?”

“We never touched you. You won’t get off spouting bullshit to Gordon-sama, you hear?”

Having said what they wanted, the guards left.

Hmph. What a bunch of idiots.

By tomorrow there’d be no reason to fear Gordon any more…

Ah, but then I suppose they’d have the demons to fear instead.

“So you were caught too,” one girl said to me.

“I-, It’ll be okay. Remilia-sama will definitely save us,” assured another as she approached me as well.

I was feeling bad enough without listening to this nonsense.

But now the women here had all come over and started talking to me.

All the noise was getting on my nerves.

Can’t you lot just sit quiet or something?

“Uuuu, save me mama…”

“Ugh, I-I’ll never f-forgive you, Fiend… How d-dare you kill him…”

It was a cacophony of vengeful muttering and crying.

Maybe I could just kill them all now!

Hm!?

Oh right. I could clean my palate with them.

I’d get my stamina back too, so it’d be killing two birds with one stone.

I looked over the girls in the cell.

Gordon had gathered a range of them, from little girls to beauties in their middle ages.

Quite a difference in age.

What an incorrigible deviant.

Still, I couldn’t say he had bad taste.

Every person in this room was an incredible beauty.

Huhu, they wouldn’t amount to much mana but with this many beauties to consume my strength was in reach.

In that case, the first sacrifice would be…

I scanned the room.

Mn!?

There was a pretty girl in twintails.

Looks like you’re firs-, hang on――

“Jessica!”

“Edim!”

“Y-, You got caught too?”

“Y-, Yeah. Gordon was too much at the town square. So then I stood up to him and then…”

Haah, still playing the good girl as always?

I wouldn’t have minded killing her right then, but Jessica was Camilla-sama’s.

“Be still, Jessica.”

“Eh!?”

I brought a knife hand down on the chains binding her.

The metal snapped with an audible clang.

Obviously I had freed myself of my own long ago.

Even weakened as I was, chains designed for humans could never hold a vampire.

“Hurry up and get out of here.”

You’re Camilla-sama’s property. I’d be damned if I let that Fiend rape you.

“Uu, thank you, Edim!”

Large tears began gathering in her eyes.

Whatever, just hurry up and escape already!

“Jessica, forget about thanking me. Hurry up and――”

“Uu, hic, I-I always thought that the Edim I used to know was gone now. But I was wrong. You saved me, Edim. I’m so happy. I’m so happy, Ediim!”

Crying, Jessica hugged me with everything she had.

“Okay, okay, I get it already. And to begin with you’re Cami――”

“Hehe, Tilea-san was right. Even though you’re a vampire now, your heart turned human again, didn’t it.”

H-, Haa? What the heck was that? Heart turned human? And Tilea-san?

“Jessica, what do you mean?”

“Ah, well, Tilea-san said――”

From there she began a summary of her conversation with Tilea-sama.

Apparently she wasn’t aware of the Evil God Army.

Well, I was sure that Tilea-sama had some reason for concealing it.

All I had to do as her faithful retainer was to try my best to accommodate her desires.

But, Tilea-sama…

Isn’t ‘a vampire whose heart is human’ a little too hard!?

I mean, I could understand wanting to hide the existence of demons, but Jessica had good instict.

I couldn’t imagine that she’d buy into these lies.

Ah, but she certainly did believe me for the moment.

It was the reality that just saving her had her believing in me.

“U-, Umm, Jessica――”

“Thank goodness, Edim… Thank goodness…”

Ah, I see.

It was because she wanted to believe in me.

So Tilea-sama was manipulating her emotion by setting up a story like this?

Hmmm…

But was there really a point in deceiving Jessica like this?

I found it hard to believe that she had all that much value.

And even if she did, wouldn’t it be easier to just hold her down and make her one of my faithful kin?

I couldn’t understand it.

I couldn’t understand what Tilea-sama was thinking at all.

But there was one thing I did know, and that was that she seem to want me to be a ‘vampire with a human heart’.

…Then I’d do it.

I’d act it out.

If Tilea-sama desired it, then as her loyal retainer it was my job to make it happen.

“Uhh, Jessica, it seems I’ve been worrying you. Sorry.”

“You really did have me worried, Edim. You weren’t really coming to school, and I heard you were avoiding everyone too…”

“I really am sorry. The reason was, well, I had a lot to deal with after becoming a vampire, you know? I thought it’d be better to put some space between me and everyone else. But thanks to Tilea-sa… n, I’ve decided to look forward and keep moving.”

“So that’s what happened. That’s Tilea-san for you. Mmn, let’s start going to school again together, okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Huhu, oh yeah, Edim, John was really worried about you too, you know?”

“U-, Umm…”

“Of course he just sees me as a friend. The one he really liked was you, he said…”

Jessica, from the bottom of my heart, I don’t care.

Hourensou means spinach, but it’s also a mnemonic for,
houkoku – report
renraku – communicate
soudan – discuss
which is a sort of basic standard for working in any organisation.

Also sorry for the delay, friends. I kept putting it off because of its length, but the next one will come out a lot sooner.

Chapter 22 – Edim and the Fiend Liquidation Mission

This was a room in the Evil God Army’s Underground Empire. It was an expansive room, its interiors luxuriously decorated, and was a more splendorous place than the entire mansions of many nobles.

Compared to the rest of the rooms in the Underground Empire however, it was slightly below average.

This room belonged to the Evil God Army’s Vampire Unit. Sitting in the centre of the room was their Captain, Arhas Edim, who was currently listening to a report from Dalf, her subordinate and kin.

“Reporting. My third-order kin Daisy and three others were expelled from the guards.”

“I see. Good work. You are dismissed.”

“Milady.”

Dalf bowed and left the room.

Edim looked at the report in her hand.

*

Including those last four, fourteen members my kin in core government positions had already been exiled from the country. Worse yet, others had been executed as well, which made recalling them an impossibility.

Having my kin die didn’t bother me so much as the fact that their use as pawns had gone to waste. All of this was due to the newly returned Sam Gordon.

It was a nostalgic name. I heard it a lot back when I was a human.

Known as the Fiend for the various legends that monster had created…

Heh. Monster? Now that I knew who the true monsters of this world were, the whole thing was just a huge farce.

He was nothing more than a gnat. And an annoying gnat, at that. What if I just got rid of him? I could send Dalf and a team to take his head for me.

No, I wouldn’t do something so overt for now. ‘Hoe Ren Soe’ was the key here, as Tilea-sama always emphasised to us. Nielsen-sama was often scolded because he forgot to keep ‘Hoe Ren Soe’ in mind. I wouldn’t make the same mistake. This problem could wait until the next war meeting, where I could bring it up for discussion. I would just warn Dalf and the others to keep Gordon out of our territory.

Phew~ I suppose now would be a good time to stop work for today…

Each day I performed my duties as the Captain of the Vampire Unit. As the head of a network that spanned the entire nation these duties were never-ending. Had I still been in my human body I would have long since collapsed from the toil. Yet another reason to be overjoyed at my powerful vampiric body.

After completing my regular duties for the day, it was about time to head back to the Academy dorms for the night. That was when the door opened.

Who?

I looked over to find that the visitor was none other than Tilea-sama.

Tilea-sama carefully looked here and there, checking all directions before she entered.

W-, What on earth was she doing? Clearing the room for something private? I was really the only one here. Was all this examination really necessary…?

“U-, Um, Tilea-sama――”

“Sshhhhh!” she silenced me with her index finger over her lips. Not in such a loud voice then.

“Tilea-sama, can I help you?”

“I actually have something really important to talk to you about, Edim. Can you come meet me in Meeting Room C?”

“Understood.”

“Also this is a secret so don’t let anybody see you, okay? Especially Timu.”

Eh!? Something that even Camilla-sama couldn’t know…?

And Tilea-sama, it’s impossible for me to get to Meeting Room C without anybody seeing me.

No matter how I tried there were just too many of the officers around. It was impossible for me to avoid their detection with my level of ability.

“Tilea-sama, it is impossible for――”

“Anyhow, I’ll meet you there. I’ve got to go tell Or too.”

“Ah-! Please wai――”

Having said what she wanted to she flew out of the room.

What now?

If I tried to sneak there I wouldn’t get mistaken for an assassin and killed, would I?

Aahh, if only I had Bernandes-sama’s ability to sneak. This was impossible for me.

What if I practiced…? No, just spending a few minutes would change nothing.

Mmm. Impossible. But sitting here agonising over it would get me nowhere.

I decided to just walk normally. If anybody asked where I was going I could give them some excuse.

Half-consigned, I headed for my destination, taking each step carefully as I kept possible excuses in mind. For good or ill I came across nobody along the way.

What good luck! I was almost there n――

“Where are you going?”

“Hyaaaaah!”

The sounds from behind scared me.

W-, Why…! I let my guard down! How was I going to get out of――wai-, this was…

“Jayjay?”

“Yes. I am pleased to see you well, Edim-sama. This is a splendid place. The furnishings and large rooms are befitting of your personal headquarters, Edim-sama.”

“Youuu insoleeeent…!”

“Hoberah!”

I immediately smashed Jayjay into the wall. He moaned as his face was half buried in it.

I would be fine if he just died. My personal headquarters? It was obviously Tilea-sama’s personal headquarters!

What an dangerous thing to say. If anybody heard that they might even doubt my loyalties.

It was actually a problem I was worrying about. Apparently my kin were loyal to me instead of Tilea-sama. I would need to find some way of re-educating them.

At any rate, I was in the middle of carrying out orders. I decided to hasten along.

Not long after I reached Meeting Room C despite the trouble with Jayjay.

Ortissio-sama had arrived as well. He seemed nervous. I noted the sweat running down his face, and the fact that he was loitering outside the room instead of entering.

I suppose I couldn’t blame him considering the way Tilea-sama suddenly called for us.

It reminded me of back when I was still a student and the Headmaster called me out. I was only new to the Academy at the time and having the head of the school suddenly calling me out was the most nervewracking experience I had ever had at the time.

Of course, looking back now it all felt like a joke. Compared to being called out by Tilea-sama it was like Heaven and Earth.

“Ortissio-sama, will you not be entering the room?”

“Edim. Do you have any idea what she’s called us here for?”

“No, I cannot say I do.”

“I see. I don’t either… No, but wait. Could it be? No, no, but it couldn’t be, could it?” he mumbled to himself.

I was given the impression that Ortissio-sama might have some clue.

The impression that the other officers had of Ortissio-sama was harsh. Even the War Councils were just another opportunity to censure him. Somehow it felt like he was always being scolded, and I think because of that he was expecting to be scolded again.

“Ortissio-sama, shall we head inside firs――”

“Edim, do you think she’s called us out here to reprimand us?”

“I, I truly cannot say. I can’t think of anything I’ve done that would deserve such a thing.”

“I see. I can think of too many things, however…”

I really wish he wouldn’t say that. I would be fine. I was doing my job properly. But now I couldn’t help but feel nervous.

Uuu, don’t tell me that I was going to get in trouble because of something Ortissio-sama did?

“Standing here thinking about it will get us nowhere, Ortissio-sama. Let us enter.”

“True. We can’t be keeping Tilea-sama waiting.”

Resolved, we entered the room.

“”Humbly reporting for duty, Tilea-sama.””

“Thank you for coming.”

Tilea-sama seemed to be thinking about something. After those few words she fell into silence. Were we really going to be scolded?

“Tilea-sama…?” I tried.

“U-Umm… the truth is…”

“Yes?”

“Uuu, I can’t. I can’t say it after all.”

Words that even the mighty Tilea-sama hesitated to speak? If we were just going to be scolded there would be no reason for this.

In that case…

I was running the possibilities through my head when Ortissio-sama said something laced with meaning, before finally dropping a bombshell.

Tilea-sama wanted to liquidate Camilla-sama!?

N-No way. The words were so shocking that my mind froze in its tracks.

W-, What was I do to…

If Ortissio-sama was right then I had reached a crossroads of no return. Tilea-sama was the foremost commander of the Evil God Army. By all means, her word was law.

But Camilla-sama was my everything…

Both my heart and body belonged to her. Opposing her was unthinkable. I didn’t even want to consider the idea.

“I-I don’t want that. I can’t betray Camilla-sama,” I told him.

“Enough, Edim! Uuu, I-I don’t want to either…” he replied in tears.

“So let’s…”

“Enough. We must endure it for the Evil God Army! Even Tilea-sama didn’t want to do this.”

“That’s enough, Or,” Tilea-sama suddenly interrupted, “If you keep saying stupid things I’ll pull out your tongue.”

“Hiiie! M-My deepest apologies.”

Tilea-sama seemed outraged at just the idea.

Of course. It was obvious to anybody that Tilea-sama cherished Camilla-sama. Why would she order her death. Honestly, I was annoyed at Ortissio-sama now for jumping the gun. Perhaps our leaders had a point in criticising Ortissio-sama.

Tilea-sama began to explain what we were here for. Coincidentally, it was regarding the very issue that had been on my mind.

It was honestly a little anti-climactic. This was hardly an issue worthy of her attention, let alone concern. Far from going there myself, it was something I thought I would solve by sending a few of my first-order kin.

When Tilea-sama was finished speaking I left the room. Ortissio-sama was fired up beyond belief. Not that I could blame him. Tilea-sama had personally given us an order. There was no doubt that he saw this as a chance for him to turn his fortunes around and restore his honour.

“Edim, we must succeed at this mission no matter what!”

“Yes sir. Of course, sir.”

“Let’s hurry up and plan then.”

“As you wish, sir.”

The two of us headed into an empty room and began to discuss the plan…

A little while later…

Hahh, I think we’d been at it for almost a whole hour now. And this mission was supposed to be so simple too…

Our discussion just wasn’t going well. I think it was because Ortissio-sama was too enthusiastic about it. At every point in the planning he would butt in and insist that he be responsible for the infiltration instead.

To be frank I didn’t want to agree, especially given how desperate for merits he was. Although he was on another level of combat strength than I was, I couldn’t help but get the feeling that he would mess this up somehow.

And honestly, it wasn’t as though I didn’t want to do this myself either. Tilea-sama had especially called for me to do this. Why would I want to hand it over. If I succeeded, wouldn’t Tilea-sama praise me? Wouldn’t Camilla-sama praise me as well?

“Hey, are you really going to be fine on your own? If you don’t think you’re up to it I’m willing to swap places with you.”

“No, no, Ortissio-sama. I am fine. There is not a problem.”

Geez, how many times had this been already? I wish he would just get the message. Didn’t he even understand that we were just wasting precious time like this? We were on a deadline.

I was right not to leave this to him. It was unacceptable to allow a mission as simple as this end in failure.

“I see… But you know, if I went instead, we could kill even more of them.”

“Ortissio-sama, Tilea-sama’s orders specified that I would infiltrate, and that you would be supporting. Tilea-sama would not have been mistaken.”

“Yes, but by extension that support should include…”

“O-, Ortissio-sama, please. How many times must we repeat this? We have already spent an hour on this, Ortissio-sama. If we continue to waste our time here, at this rate the sun will rise and we will fail the mission.”

“Mumu, you’re right in that time is wasting. Can’t be helped. The lead role is in your hands, Edim.”

Hah, finally.

In the end I would be infiltrating the mansion and taking Gordon’s head, just as Tilea-sama ordered. Ortissio and his Second Division would be surrounding the property in the one-in-a-million chance that Gordon managed to escape me.

…Exactly the same as Tilea-sama’s orders. This meeting could have been over in five minutes. Was there really a need to talk so much?

I was losing more faith in Ortissio-sama.

It was worrying. Right now Ortissio-sama wasn’t thinking properly. I wasn’t even sure I could leave the encirclement to him.

I decided to give orders to my subordinates in clandestine. I was going to message Dalf telepathically with my orders. This telepathy was something I could only use with my direct kin.

Telepathy activate!

『Dalf. A matter of great urgency has come up.』

『Why if it isn’t Edim-sama. It must be quite a big deal for you to be using telepathy.』

『Indeed. A direct order from Tilea-sama. From this moment forth we commence the liquidation of the Fiend.』

『As you wish. Then I shall send out orders to our forces to immediately assemble for a general offensive on the――』

『Wait. No need for something so exaggerated. All you lot need to do is encircle the mansion. I’ll take the Fiend’s head.』

『Edim-sama, going alone is… Please excuse me for speaking out of turn, but I recommend you take a guard detachment.』

『Unnecessary. I will hardly lose to a human.

『I understand your might, Edim-sama. However this is still the infamous Fiend. If something goes wrong, having at least one person… Please take myself or Milio along with you.』

『Unnecessary.』

『However…』

『Enough. Stop now before I consider it disrespect.』

『Y-Yes, milady.』

『Well then, Dalf, I’ll entrust the matter to you.』

『As you will. In that case I will assign the east, west, and north to Milio, Cass, and Jin respectively. Not a single ant will get past us.』

『I’ll leave it to you.』

That was done now. I wasn’t going to tell Ortissio-sama but wasn’t that fine? The more the better for an encirclement.

All that was left was the infiltrate…

“Ortissio-sama, it’s about time――” I called out to him.

Unfortunately he was giving orders to a lot of messengers and didn’t notice me.

W-, What on earth was this man doing…?

Orders were flying left and right. He really was too excited. Was he planning on mobilising the entire Second Division just for a mere human?

He was even calling back captains in the middle of campaigns abroad, and even adding prisoners of war to the encirclement. This was overkill.

I frantically tried to stop him.

“U-Umm, Ortissio-sama, please excuse me but perhaps this mission doesn’t warrant going as far as to recall your subordinates from abroad. Just the people here right now should be enough.”

“Edim. ‘One-in-a-million’. If by some one-in-a-million chance we fail to kill him are you going to be the one to take responsibility! How do you plan on taking responsibility if Tilea-sama loses faith in me!?”

It was pointless even discussing this with him. Ah well. I wouldn’t waste my time on it then. All I had to do was fetch Gordon’s head. Everything else would follow.

Just then, Dryas-sama came out to see what the noise was about.

“There you are, Ortissio! Who told you to call your soldiers back to the Capital!?” he demanded angrily.

As the Chief of General Staff, the one who managed our soldiers and missions was Dryas-sama. It was quite likely that his plans had been ruined by Ortissio-sama’s actions.

“Chief of General Staff. I have a reason for moving my soldiers.”

“And what reason would that be? Depending on what you say, it may even be grounds for execu――”

“I ordered my soldiers to return here for a top secret mission from Tilea-sama,” he replied smugly.

Uwah…

Dryas-sama on the other hand looked astounded. Considering that it was the ever intellectual and composed Dryas-sama, Ortissio-sama’s words must have really shocked him.

“I… I see. A top secret mission from Tilea-sama… Given to you, Ortissio…?”

“Hmph. I’m not surprised that you don’t know. The orders came from Tilea-sama herself.”

“U-, Umu. In that case fulfil your duties as best you can. Worry not and use the soldiers as you need. I will take care of the rest.”

“Of course. After all, these orders came directly from Tilea-sama. Directly from Tilea-sama. It’s important so I said it twice.”

He even stole the last line from Tilea-sama…

The glee was written all over his face. During the last war council Dryas-sama really ripped him apart, so I guess this was his way of venting.

“O-, Ortissio, is there anything at all I can do to help? I would not begrudge you the assistance.”

“Chief, do you really understand what ‘top secret’ means? It means that the details are classified to anybody who Tilea-sama has not entrusted it to. I can’t even tell you about it.”

“Guh, nghn….”

“At any rate, I’m very busy with this, so please excuse me. I must prepare for the top secret mission. Goodness, if only we had you. I’m sure the planning would be over in an instant… Too bad that Tilea-sama hasn’t trusted you with it… Kuahahahahah!”

He was provoking him so blatantly…!

Dryas-sama? ――Uohh, s-scary… Dryas-sama was enraged.

The smile on his face was terrifying. Using Tilea-sama to provoke him like that was a sure-fire way to earn his hatred.

I couldn’t even imagine the consequences of deliberately enraging the Chief of Staff of the army.

“Edim,” Dryas-sama turned to me.

“Y-Yes?”

“Endeavour in your top secret mission from Tilea-sama.”

“O-Of course.”

“Of course she’ll try her best,” added Ortissio-sama, “After all, both Edim and I are that trusted by Tilea-sama after all.”

Please stop that, Ortissio-sama. Don’t get me involved as well. Please stop provoking him. Eek! The veins on Dryas-sama’s forehead are popping out.

Things were looking bad for me. It was time to wrap this up.

“U-, Umm, Ortissio-sama, we don’t really have that much time, so let’s go.”

“Umu. We have a lofty goal to accomplish, after all. Ahh~ If only there was a trusted Chief of Staff somewhere that could help us with our planning…”

Loudly guffawing, Ortissio-sama left the room.

Quickly, I trotted along after him. I’m begging you, Ortissio-sama, please don’t drag me in.

I was too afraid to check what kind of expression Dryas-sama was wearing.

Still running, I waited until I thought Dryas-sama was gone before speaking.

“Um, Ortissio-sama, perhaps it might be better if you didn’t provoke Dryas-sama too much.”

You’ll be the one to regret it later, you know.

“Listen, Edim. I first served Mamira-sama. Then Camilla-sama. Now I’m serving Tilea-sama. I’ve been serving for three generations. You could call me one of the oldest members.”

“Y-, Yes.”

“Even if that brat is Camilla-sama’s creation, do you think I could stand to be looked down on by somebody who isn’t even a year old!?” he roared indignantly.

He must have been holding it in for a long time. I could tell just how angry he was.

It was true that it hadn’t been a year since Dryas-sama was born. Part of the reason that he was so high ranked was thanks to Tilea-sama and Camilla-sama’s strong support. Did the rest of the veterans feel dissatisfied like Ortissio-sama?

After that, Ortissio-sama continued to vent about Dryas-sama. I just nodded along as I ran.

Before long we reached the front of the Fiend’s mansion. The members of his Second Division were already here, encircling the mansion together with the vampires I secretly called.

We were ready.

“Well then, Ortissio-sama, I will break into――”

“Wait, Edim.”

“Sir?”

Why did he stop me?

I… I was kinda getting a bad feeling about this.

Ortissio-sama gestured at his subordinates and they brought something forward in response.

A person? S-, Something smelt horrific.

Uuu, this was too much on my sharpened senses.

“W-, What is that…?”

“Some homeless person we caught while cleaning up. Edim, drink up so that you’re at your best!”

“Eh-!? U-Umm, are you telling me to drink his blood?”

“Obviously. You’re about to undergo an infiltration mission, Edim. I need you in tip-top shape. Drink his blood and power up.”

‘Power up’ he says…

I had a look at the person he prepared for me. His hair was sticky with grease, as well as dandruff and other filth. His clothes weren’t in any better shape either. Who knew when the last time he had a wash was. And he had this indescribable stink too.

Even a fourth, no, fifth-order, no, even the lowliest vampire I had in my squad wouldn’t have to suffer blood from a thing like this.

“P-Please calm down, Ortissio-sama. Just finishing off a human is a simple task. There is no need for me to…”

“Silence! What do you think this mission is? How will you take responsibility for failure? Are you intending on shaming me with you!?”

“N-No, I wouldn’t dream of it.”

“Then drink up. We need you at your peak!”

Aah, this was such a bother. Maybe it would be best just to give in. It was probably going to be disgusting, but I needed to complete the mission.

“I, I understand. Then, here I go.”

Steeling myself, I sunk my fangs into this embodiment of nausea.

Ugh! Disgusting!

T-, This was even worse than I imagined. The sensation of sinking my teeth into this was…

Ugh, ogh. I was gagging. But I decided just to clear my mind and drink without thinking.

With each gulp a queasiness I couldn’t describe spread through my body.

T-, This was definitely a power down.

With teary eyes, I forced myself to finish up.

“Ugh, haah, haah, haah. I-I’ll be leaving now――”

“Wait, Edim.”

“Wh-, What is it this time!?”

“Here’s three more. Bottoms up.”

Three more vagrants were tossed in front of me. What did he want from me…?

“U-Umm, it’s all right, Ortissio-sama. Ughpu… I, I’ve had enough.”

“Nghn? Are you telling me you won’t drink the blood I prepared for you!? Edim, could it be that you’re making a fool of me!?”

“U-Umm, no, I really just don’t need it. Or rather, I’m so full I’m feeling ill――”

What!? You! At such an important moment you’re feeling ill!? I guess I really will have to go instead.”

Oh no. Not this again. I had to pull myself together.

“No, no, you misunderstand. I said that thanks to the blood you provided I’m feeling really well.”

“I see, I see. Then bottoms up. Gulp it all down!”

Three more of them…

And all three of them were even smellier and dirtier than the last. There were spots here and there on the skin. Maybe they were all sick with the same disease.

Actually weren’t they already rotting? They were dead. I wasn’t a necromancer!

Ugh, this was so filthy. Where was I even supposed to bite. Wasn’t there somewhere a bit cleaner? I looked the three corpses over but it was hopeless.

Kuh, but just looking at them was just wasting time. I gathered my determination and did it.

Mn!? O-Oeghh!

Uu, h-horrible. T-They were definitely diseased.

Oh no. This was definitely poison. Haah, haah, I was supposed to finish this? This wasn’t a joke.

Uu, s-save me, Camilla-sama.

Unfortunately Ortissio-sama wasn’t going to let me off. So cruel!

Instead I tried to imagine that it was blood given from Camilla-sama to get through it.

Enduring the nausea, I finally finished.

I, I was finally done. I-I wanted to praise myself, honestly.

“How were the seconds, Edim?”

“Ku, guh, haa, haa, f-fine… sir. A-Anyhow, I need to be going.”

“Mu! You seem to be tottering, Edim. This won’t affect your mission, will it?”

“N-, No sir. Uup… I, I just drank a little too much.”

“Honestly, this is because you got ahead of yourself.”

Haa, haa, I wanted to tell him that I was completely ill because of the filthy blood that he prepared for me.

But in that case I would have to let him perform the infiltration. And besides, I had the feeling that I wouldn’t be able to stop complaining if I started.

If I did that he’d kill me. Whatever else you said about him, Ortissio-sama was strong.

I, I didn’t want to die for such a stupid reason.

Haah, haah, this was so unreasonable. S-, So this is what Tilea-sama meant by “ab youso powah”, and why it was so bad. Subordinates feeling like idiots because of the tyranny of their superiors. Oh wait, or was this one “alko hole ab yous”…?

O-, Oh no. I was feeling trippy now. I, I had to concentrate on the mission.

“Haa, haa, w-well then, please excuse me.”

“Umu. If you haven’t taken his head by the hour, my troops will intervene. You understand?”

“Y-Yes sir.”

Within the hour… Could I do it? My body was being assaulted by dizziness. I was having trouble walking straight, and my body was shaking from the nausea. This was my first time feeling like this since I became a vampire.

C-, Could I kill the Fiend in this condition?

My earlier confidence was all but gone now.

I was astounded by Tilea-sama’s foresight. Never would I have expected that this simple mission would become this dangerous. The enemy was internal all along, wasn’t it.

It was exactly as Tilea-sama said; a dangerous mission with a survival rate of five percent, that might even lead to my death.

Haah, haah, this was so unreasonable. S-, So this is what Tilea-sama meant by “pawahara”(power harassment), and why it was so bad. Subordinates feeling like idiots because of the tyranny of their superiors. Oh wait, or was it “aruhara”(alcohol harassment)…?

Chapter 21 – “Ordering the Fiend’s liquidation – I’ve found my resolve.”

“”Humbly reporting for duty, Tilea-sama.””

“Thank you for coming.”

Edim and Or entered the room and knelt before me like retainers. It was like knights in the presence of a king.

It was a game to them, yes, but they still treated me like their master, and behaved with loyalty. Sometimes I’d go with the flow and order them to do this or that, but never would I have imagined that I’d be ordering a murder.

The target might have been an inhuman villain, but perhaps they’d look down on me for resorting to murder. Maybe we couldn’t go back to being friends after this. But this was all I could do to protect Timu. If the state wasn’t moving to stop him, then I had to stop him myself.

There was no option except his assassination. Would it even work? He was a living legend. Legendary for his evil, but also legendary for his power. Stories about his prowess in combat were innumerable.

A famous magical scholar once said this about the Fiend.

‘Of all the humans, who, you ask, was capable of the most efficient and destructive magic?

Was it Ven Vete, who defeated an army of a thousand on his own…?

Was it Schuement, known as the invincible general…?

Or perhaps it Miyamu Sashi, undefeated in his lifetime…?

I do not boast of knowing every human in history, but of the ones I do know the most fitting answer to the question is one man.

Sam Gordon.’

There were plenty of other accounts too, like how ‘Sam Gordon’s power can’t be described’ or ‘There isn’t a bit of waste in Sam Gordon’s spells’.

Huh. Thinking about it, was I getting Edim and Or involved in a fruitless battle?

…No, no, it’s fine, it’s fine.

Or’s family was rich and powerful enough to create this underground empire. And Edim was a vampire. Her power was beyond any normal adventurer. With the two of them cooperating it was definitely possible to kill the Fiend tonight.

“Tilea-sama…?” asked Edim in confusion.

Oh, oops. She must have been confused because I had been silent all this time.

“U-Umm… the truth is…”

“Yes?”

“Uuu, I can’t. I can’t say it after all.”

I had lost my resolve. The two of them were just looking at me so innocently that I couldn’t. They totally trusted me. How could I ask companions who trusted me so deeply to do something like murder.

“Tilea-sama, is something the matter?” asked Edim.

“Ah, umm… I had a favour to ask, but I just can’t…”

“Tilea-sama, please don’t feel hesitant. Order anything you wish of us.”

“It is as Edim says,” agreed Ortissio, “I may lack skill, but I will give my all in your service, Tilea-sama.”

So they said, but…

Was it really okay to take them up on this? I really didn’t want such good people involved in this. Not Or, and especially not Edim. Edim had already suffered so much. After finally being able to live a normal life, was I going to ask her to jump back into the world of violence…?

No, I had to hide this from them…

But, no, but then Timu and I were in danger. It had to be these two if I wanted to save Timu.

Uuu, what was I going to do? While I was agonising over my dilemma…

“Edim. It looks like it’s time,” Or said with a subdued expression.

“Eh? What do you mean?” asked Edim.

“A sudden summons. And what’s more, strict orders to keep this a secret from everybody else.”

“Now that you mention it, that’s true. I was ordered in particular to keep this from Camilla-sama.”

“Indeed. And even after that, Tilea-sama hesitates. There is only one order this could be.”

Ohh! Or, have you awakened to telepathy or something?

How could he have guessed…

“Ortissio-sama, what order has Tilea-sama been hesitating to give?”

“There could only be one. The liquidation of Camilla-sama.”

“”Haah?“” screeched Edim and I.

What the hell was this guy smoking? Had he finally gone nuts?

“T-That can’t be… Why would Tilea-sama order Camilla-sama’s liquidation!”

“Edim, in the long run there can only be one leader of the Evil God Army. At present Camilla-sama’s authority is too large, and undermines Tilea-sama’s.”

“I-I don’t want that. I can’t betray Camilla-sama.”

“Enough, Edim! Uuu, I-I don’t want to either…”

“So let’s…”

“Enough. We must endure it for the Evil God Army! Even Tilea-sama didn’t want to do this,” Or persuaded Edim in tears.

Mmmn. I knew Or was an idiot, but to actually be this much of one…

“That’s enough, Or. If you keep saying stupid things I’ll pull out your tongue.”

“Hiii! M-My deepest apologies.”

“Geez~ As if I could ever hurt Timu! Honestly, you were being so ridiculous I was speechless.”

“Then Tilea-sama, are we not going to be erasing Camilla-sama?”

“Of course not! That’s too much to even joke about.”

“T-Then, what might our mission be? Everything was so hush-hush so I had thought for certain that…”

Or seemed really embarrassed. For certain that, what? Apparently he had misunderstood entirely. Geez, this had really done a number on my mood.

“Hahh, it’s not Timu. The reason I called for only you two is because there’s something I want from just the two of you.”

“I see. What a relief.”

“What a- …What I’m going to ask of you will make you criminals――”

And not just the type of criminals who end up in jail.

Considering it was a wanted man and a vampire, the consequences for being caught were enormous. I needed them to understand this.

“Ahem, what I’m asking of you might even lead to your deaths, you know.”

The two of them stared blankly. I must have startled them. Apparently they really hadn’t expected this.

I wasn’t surprised. Anybody would be afraid of losing their lives.

“U-Um, Tilea-sama, so it’s just a dangerous mission then?”

“It is. And what do you mean ‘just a dangerous mission’? It sounds like you’re making light of this but there’s only a five percent chance of survival, you know.”

“Hu hu hu.”

“W-, What’s the matter, Or? You suddenly started laughing.”

Had he gone mad from the fear?

“Tilea-sama, I have been waiting for this very moment. I, lowly Ortissio, will not hesitate to die for you. Please grant me this mission, Tilea-sama.”

Aaahh~ I should have known. Any chuunibyou would get fired up by the words ‘dangerous mission’. This was for real though. It was actually really dangerous. I had to teach this idiot reality or else.

“Or, you don’t seem to have understood the seriousness of this, so let me teach you.”

“As you will.”

“Do you know who Sam Gordon, the Fiend is?”

“N-, No, I do not.”

“I see. Then let me talk about him first.”

“U-, Um, Tilea-sama,” interrupted Edim with a raised hand, “I was actually thinking of bringing up Sam Gordon as the agenda for our next War Council.”

“So you know the Fiend, Edim?”

“Yes. I was originally a human so Sam Gordon was famous in my circles.”

“Then you know that right now Sam Gordon is in the Capital, doing unbelievable things, right?”

“Yes. Gordon foolishly encroached on the territory of the Evil God Army. I found it hard to stand as well. I had considered eliminating him but decided it was better to discuss it at the War Council first.”

I see. So Edim’s vampire network had already informed her about what he had done. And she couldn’t bear to stand by either. That’s why she thought of doing something about it, and wanted the advice of the War Council; in other words, Dryas-kun and the others.

Edim was such a kind girl. But bringing it up with the War Council would alert Timu as well. As long as we had no options except killing him, it was better to limit the number of people involved.

In other words the War Council was out of the question. Or, Edim, I’m sorry for this.

Of course, I couldn’t just sit back and have these two do all of the dirty work while staying uninvolved myself. I would only slow them down so I couldn’t come along with them, but I could at least be a conspirator in the murder.

After gathering my resolve, I gazed at the two of them.

“Edim, Or, listen carefully.”

“”Yes.””

“By ‘dangerous mission’, what I want the two of you to do is assassinate Sam Gordon.”

Again, I was met with blank stares. This time they really did seem bewildered. Even if he was atrocious, I was still talking about a murder…

Were they disgusted with me?

But, but, I really had no choice here. I decided to explain the circumstances――

“U-, Um, Tilea-sama,” asked Edim.

“W-, What is it?”

“In other words, the missions is just to erase Sam Gordon?”

“Yes, that’s right.

“U-Um, please wait a moment. That isn’t really dangerous at all. Actually, you could call it simple even…”

Apparently Edim had no compunctions about murder. Then again it was the Fiend after all. Maybe the Fiend had done even worse things than I knew, and Edim heard about it from her vampire kin. Could it be that she had planned on suggesting murder at the War Council too?

Anyway, I’d worry about the ethics later. For now the problem was whether or not she could really assassinate the Fiend. Why was she so confident? Even if she had the power of a vampire he was still the legendary Fiend.

“Edim, I know that since gaining the power of a vampire you can enter Super Edim mode. But this is still the Fiend.”

“Yes. But he’s just a human.”

“W-, Well, he is but… The Fiend is a first-rate mage. And the Fiend knows that he has enemies everywhere, so she’s fortified himself in his manor. The defence stats of his manor are definitely insane. And he’s hired a huge number of mercenaries so you’ll be outnumbered too.”

“Tilea-sama, the number of mercenaries is at best a few hundred. There is nothing to fear.”

Edim’s confidence was still unshaken.

W-, Why was she so sure that…

Gasp! Was she going to fight with her kin?

S-, She couldn’t. Bringing in everybody like that would increase the casualty count too much. Ah, but if Edim’s life was in danger then maybe it couldn’t be helped.

“Edim, are you planning on bringing your kin to battle as well?”

“No, if I brought everybody it would attract too much attention. And I would probably lose a large number of them. It isn’t an issue. I’ll sneak in and take his head.”

“Can you really do it?”

“Yes, I have confidence. And with Ortissio-sama’s support we already have an excess in offensive ability.”

“It is as Edim says, Tilea-sama. With my Second Division handling support, not one of them will escape.”

Edim was this confident even without her vampires. But relying on her was all I could do. I just had to trust that she knew what she was doing.

And Or was filled with confidence too. When it came to him though, it was just the empty words of a chuunibyou. Actually, I was starting to feel nervous about relying on him. Having his family as help was really appealing though. I couldn’t imagine that we could do this without political support.

“Edim, Or, I understand. I’ll believe in you two. I’m sorry for asking this of you, but please come back safely!”

“”Milady! We will return with Gordon’s head!””

“And Or, please thank your parents for me.”

“Hahh, and by parents you mean Mami――”

Haahn?

“Hiii! N-Nothing. Yes, I’ll thank them.”

Phew, Or was about to talk about Mamira again. Even at a time like this he was still acting like a chuunibyou. Would things really work out?

Since I missed last weekend’s Tilea update.

Somehow what would ordinarily be a horrifying scene has turned into a a hilarious farce because it’s “the evil magistrate and the helpless maiden” but instead of the maiden you have the all-powerful Evil God. The pair in question have no idea of course, but plenty of onlookers do.

20 – Battle Against Gordon the Fiend

Gordon leered my way like a hawk that had found its prey.

Oh no, ohh no. I had to hide!

I immediately moved myself behind somebody else. Gordon had met my eyes earlier but it was only for a moment.

Maybe he wouldn’t find me…

I hadn’t had much hope, but I still tried my best to hide. Unfortunately he was heading directly for me.

Not long after…

The footsteps stopped.

Gordon was standing right in front of me.

“Ku ku! Fool girl! Did you really think you could hide from me!?” he laughed in amusement.

O-Oh crap. What now?

As long as he didn’t remember my face I was clear. Even though I didn’t think it would amount to anything, I kept looking downwards.

“Come, girl. Show me your face!”

“…”

“Girl! Hurry up and show Gordon-sama your damned face!”

I guess one of his lackeys was offended by my lack of reaction because he grabbed me by the hair and forced my head upwards.

Kuh! Keep your dirty hands away from a girl’s hair!

“Hohh! I had begun to believe that this city was nothing but homely wenches, but here you are!”

A lustful smile spread across Gordon’s face as he ran his gaze over my body. Uu, this is disgusting.

“Gordon-sama. It seems like today wasn’t a waste after all.”

“Indeed. I suppose we mustn’t underestimate the Capital. Just as I was lamenting the choice of women, this fine prize came along,” spoke Gordon contentedly, holding my chin in his fingers.

I was in some deep shit now.

At this rate I was going to end up like Sammy-chan.

Although I was seething inside, my only choice was to demean myself and ask for forgiveness.

“I-If I offended you, please accept my apologies. P-, Please have mercy…”

“I think, no. A lowly commoner like you slandered a Duke like me. It would be extremely ordinary for you to go to the execution block for that, but in light of your beauty I will make an exception and forgive me. Show some gratitude.”

“G-, Gratitude…?”

“Gratitude. Because not only am I especially pardoning you, you now have the honour of serving me as my sex slave.”

“I-, I’m afraid I must decline.”

“Oh? If you’d prefer we can still slay you on the spot.”

“Eek!? No thank you. P-, Please don’t do that.

“It appears that we have settled on ‘sex slave’. I’ll have you serve me morning, noon and night.”

“Uu, uu,”

“Still dissatisfied? Then perhaps I’ll have your family take responsibility in your stead. Your parents and siblings can all hang for you.”

“P-Please stop! My family hasn’t done anything!”

“Ku ku! You should prepare yourself. You never had a choice to begin with.”

“H-, How could you…”

I fell to my knees in despair.

“Aahh~ And you had better not kill yourself like the girl from the day before. I would be most unhappy if you died while I was having my fun.”

“S-, Sammy-chan…”

“Oh, that was her name. Ku ku, she had a wonderful scream. I’m expecting a lot from you too.”

“Kihihi, Gordon-sama, that really was a masterpiece. Remember the look on her fiancé’s face as he lay next to her?”

“Kuahahahah! Don’t remind me! You’re killing me, man!”

The men around me all began to guffaw again. None of them felt a shred of guilt about driving a girl to suicide.

W-What unbelievable bastards. And they fucking stank. Even the civilians around us were frowning.

“Now then. Let’s hurry back to my estate so I can have you serve me, girl.”

Apparently having had his fill of laughter, Gordon grabbed my wrist with a grin and pulled me along with his rough hand.

Disgusting. Disgusting. Disgusting.

“P-, Please wait. I’m Remilia-san’s friend, you know!”

Remilia-san was like the natural enemy of villains like these. Not only was she the Captain of the Public Safety Force but she was also the descendant of a Hero. There was no way they wouldn’t know her.

Fiend! If you get too carried away don’t blame me when my friend Remilia-san comes to punish you!

I faced Gorgon head-on with a triumphant expression. He let go, so at least it had some effect.

Soon his face warped into another smirk though…

Remilia’s friend? You’re lying!

His lackeys began screaming angrily as well.

“Stop lying!”

“If you spout anymore bullshit we’ll kill you!”

Hmph. Lie? They could act tough all they wanted. Once Remilia-san heard about this, it was all over for them.

Ah!? But unless these idiots believed me they wouldn’t let me go.

“It’s true,” said Millie-san. “Tilea-chan is Remilia-sama’s friend. I’ve seen them chatting quite a few times. Sometimes the two of them eat out together too.”

Ooh, thank you Millie-san. She risked being targeted by the Fiend just to save me. I’m so happy. She really was a great person.

“Shut up, hag! You think we’ll believe you? You’re clearly lying for this girl!”

“I-It’s no lie. If you keep doing things like this Remilia-sama will arrest you.”

“What was that, you hag!?”

Things started to descend into an argument as the other onwatchers used this as a chance to complain as well.

Was the public on my side then…?

But despite the mention of Remilia-san, Gordon was unperturbed. In fact he was still smirking complacently at me.

“Ku ku. Let’s say that you really are her friend, so what?”

“Eh?”

“Nobody but the higher ups know, but Remilia is set for execution.”

“Why!?” I shouted.

Why? Why? Why was Remilia-san going to be executed!

“Why wouldn’t she be! The Capital was half-destroyed in that last attack by the demons. If the Captain of the Public Safety Force doesn’t take responsibility then who will.”

“B-But, lots of people were saved thanks to Remilia-san.”

“And so what. Out of all the Public Security Force members, only that coward is left alive. Brazenly surviving while her men died!”

“Remilia-san is the Royal Family’s greatest servant!”

“Greatest!? Reality proved that she was an incompetent, no match at all for the demons. Remilia herself admitted as such.”

“B-But… That’s so unfair.”

“Ku ku, how about you stop worrying about Remilia and start worrying about yourself?” he sneered.

Uu. Scary. How did I end up targeted by the legendary Fiend…

“Uuu…”

“Too scared to talk, now? I think I’ll make sure to thoroughly teach you what happens when you defy me.”

“He he, what are you going to do, Gordon-sama?”

“What indeed. I think I’ll start with a little training once we reach the mansion. Take her away!”

“S-Stop――”

“Please wait, Gordon-sama.”

Gordon stopped.

“What is it, Nyger?” he asked.

“Members of the Public Safety Force are headed this way.”

“Tsk. The squad that didn’t take my bribes then.”

“Yes sir. The so-called ‘Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons’.”

Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons!?

Isn’t that the committee that I attend meetings for every month!?

Thank goodness. Remilia-san’s comrades. I’m saved.

I let out a sigh of relief.

A few minutes later a few squads of cavalry arrived.

Among them I recognised Raiden Jaft-san and Mose Denper-san from the meetings. So glad. Raiden-san always seemed surly to me, but in situations like this he felt so reliable.

“Settle down, please,” yelled Denper-san from horseback.

Ohh! For somebody with his build he was shockingly imposing. That was an elite of the Sorcerers Regiment for you.

“And who in the hell do you think you’re speaking to!” replied Gordon.

“You may be a Duke, but those who disrupt the peace will punished without exemption!” Denper-san said.

“Fuck off, boy! Gordon-sama, let’s take them down,” said a lackey.

“Indeed. Then kill――”

“I believe we should retreat for now, Gordon-sama.”

“Nyger? And why?”

“We have the advantage in numbers, but the terrain favours cavalry. If we do battle we will suffer.”

“Hmph. If that’s your advice Nyger, then I shall retreat. Come, men. We leave.”

“”Sir!””

Gordon and his followers began to walk off. But along the way, Gordon turned around and spoke.

“After Remilia’s execution, it shall be your turn next,” he spat, “I will see every one of you hang.”

Haha… I managed to protect my chastity…

“Are you all right, Tilea-chan?” Denper-san asked gently.

“I am. Thank you very much, Denper-san.”

“That was some terrible luck. Were you hurt at all?”

“No, I’m fine, thank you.”

Speaking with him warmed my heart.

At first I had been wracked with guilt and stomach pains after attending the meetings, but I’m glad I did now. Honestly, truly glad. Because I attended I got to know so many kind people.

Oh, that’s right. I needed to ask about Remilia-san…

“U-Um, about what Gordon said about Remilia-san’s execution. Is it true?”

“Unfortunately it is.”

“T-, That can’t be…”

“We lost. Gordon has been waiting all this time for revenge against the Royal Family. Not long ago he seized royal authority and used it to arrest Remilia-sama.”

“Is that even possible?”

“Mmn. We’ve been busy preparing for war against the Manafint Confederation so we were careless against internal enemies. That’s probably how he wormed his way in.”

“Wha-!? We’re going to war!?”

“We are. His Majesty was never the kind of fool to do something like this though.”

“What do you mean?”

“Starting a war with another country. Even if he was preparing for war, he wasn’t so incompetent as to lose control of his own government.”

Mmm… I guess the damage from the demon raid ran even deeper than expected. Was the stress getting to the King…?

Remilia-san was more important though. What I cared about was whether or not we could rescue Remilia-san.

“Isn’t there some way we can save her?”

“Not at the moment. Right now Gordon is taking down our allies left and right.”

“Gordon?”

“He’s ruthless against his foes. Now that he has his eye on you, I think it would be safer for you to quickly leave the Capital.”

“I-, I can’t just suddenly go…”

“Gordon will never willingly let his prey escape. You need to take your family and go.”

Denper-san made an extremely good point. Mum had already told me the kind of things the Fiend did.

In that case I needed to leave, and soon. First I’d head back to the restaurant to pack, and then take Timu and go. Everyone else in the Evil God Army could wait until things cooled down, and then leave for the countryside.

After I thanked Denper-san, I told Millie-san that I was leaving the Capital and then ran for the store.

But when I arrived somebody was standing in front of it.

Who the hell?

“Heyyy there! Why the hurry?”

This vulgar voice… There was no forgetting it. This man was one of Gordon’s followers.

The man approached me with an obscene look on his face.

Why was this man in front of my store?

“W-Why are you…?”

“Why? Well I spoke to some of the locals. Asked for a blonde-haired, blue-eyed beauty living around here.”

“W-Why…”

“Ku ku, I guess being a beauty isn’t all good things. With how popular you are at your store you’re practically a celebrity! Ahhahahah!”

Kuh! Oh no… They knew where we lived. I should have headed straight here and then left. I wasted too much time speaking to Millie-san when I should have come straight here.

Uu, but Millie-san was crying and worrying about me. I couldn’t just leave her like that.

“Well…? Did you come here for something?”

“A message from Gordon-sama. Tomorrow he’s coming to get you. If you aren’t there, he’ll kill your family and everybody you know.”

“H-, How could he.”

“I suppose I should let you know that we have plenty of men in the gatekeeper guards too. You couldn’t escape even if you wanted to.”

With that, the lackey left with uproarious laughter.

Godddamnit, what was I going to do.

This was going to be Sammy-chan all over again.

A sex slave to the Fiend… No! How could I ever service a man! Absolutely impossible. Just thinking about that scumbag was enough to make my hair stand on end.

And if the Fiend had his eye on me, then Timu was in danger too. Just thinking about him trying to hurt her made me so angry I almost blacked out.

What was I going to do?

Fleeing the Capital was impossible for the moment. If the man from before was telling the truth then the gatekeepers were filled with his men. Remilia-san was awaiting execution and couldn’t help right now. If anything, I wanted to help her.

Not that I could. Right now I could only hope that the Loyalist Committee for the Extermination of Demons would be able to save her. I believed that they could.

I couldn’t escape from the capital.

Nobody was going to save me.

If Remilia-san really was executed then nobody would be able to stop the Fiend. Not just me, but Timu, Mum, Dad, everybody I loved would fall prey to him.

No! No! How could I possibly accept that!?

Then what was I going to do?

……

…………

………………

Killing him was the only way…

It saddened me that it had come to this, but I would do it.

Thankfully I had powerful allies. My only advantage against the Fiend.

It was those two. Myuu and Edim.

As long as they took the head of the Fiend before tomorrow morning, it would all work out. Myuu was on adventurer business away from the Capital right now. Considering the time limit, he wasn’t an option.

That left Edim. Edim, who could either kill the Fiend or make him hers.

No, but even if he became her kin his personality wouldn’t change. It wasn’t a guarantee that she could control him even after turning him into a vampire. In fact, it could make things even worse by giving him more power.

Killing was the only way forward.

In that case we could use Or’s political power too. I would send Edim’s power as a vampire to attack. In case that wasn’t enough, Or would use his connections to send her support.

A plan for murder slowly began to coalesce in my mind…

Haha, I was disgusting…

After all that talk about wanting Edim to live as a human, in the end I relied on her power as a vampire. She was the type of girl who would happily agree as long as I asked for her to help me. Even though I couldn’t imagine she actually wanted to use any of these powers otherwise.

I’m sorry, Edim.

I was going to become a criminal. He may have been a brute, and a villain, but I was still planning a murder. Success or failure, I would be bearing the karma for this deed. If that was the case, then I hoped to limit the involved parties to the bare minimum.

I would talk to Or and Edim about this. Nobody else had to know. And absolutely not Timu. I wanted her to live freely under the sunlight.

I was hesitant. Doing this would be bringing my dear friends Edim and Or into this mess. But the Fiend was truly dangerous. It wouldn’t be just me. Everyone would come to harm by his hands. For Timu’s sake, I would become heartless.

Accomplice to murder? Fine with me. If it meant protecting my family, becoming a criminal was nothing!

I sent for Or and Edim to meet me in one of the rooms.

Chapter 19 – “I met the real Fiend”

Hmm hmm~ Today was another sunny day~

I could feel the warm sun on my skin. Days like this were the best for searching for ingredients. That’s why I was on my way to the market looking for new ingredients for my cooking research.

There were a lot more adventurers in the Capital these days, so maybe they would be selling some meat from rare magic beasts. It was pretty exciting. Or gave me money earlier so I had platinum ready in my purse.

Huhu, with this I could buy everything and still have change left over. I had so much that I was considering looking for cooking utensils too. Thinking about it, I could really do with a new pan.

Oh! Maybe some spices would be good too. Yep, yep, the new recipe I was making would definitely need some spices.

And also…

――Wha-, oh no! I almost fell victim to another spending spree. Not good, not good. I cleared the worldly desires from my mind.

That’s right. These last few months I had been carelessly spending all of Or’s money, just like I almost did just now. And Or had so little sense that every time he would hand me platinum coins. A single platinum coin was equivalent to a commoner family’s yearly income, you know.

Hahh. We were in the red precisely because I kept doing this. But not today.

With renewed determination, I made my way to the marketplace.

I was about a block away from the marketplace when I came across Milley-san, a resident of that street. Milley-san was a nice lady who ran a fabrics store on Western Street. When I first came to the Capital she looked out for me in a lot of different ways. Introducing me to the people in the area, telling me about this great little out-of-the-way shop… Honestly too many examples to name. I suppose her only flaw was that she was a huge gossip. She knew heaps of weird tidbits about others.

I suppose she wasn’t any different to the housewives in my old world. Even if she was a gossip, she was kind and took care of others, which was what mattered.

I walked over to say hello.

“Hello, Milley-san!”

“Oh, Tilea-chan.”

When she turned around I realised she was wearing a severe expression. That was odd. She was usually so cheerful.

“Did something happen?”

“Tilea-chan, you know Sammy-chan don’t you?”

“Yes. The girl working in that store on Eastern Street?”

“Yes. Her. She killed herself this morning.”

“Eh!? That’s horrible!”

Sammy-chan…

We hadn’t really talked much. Maybe just a few times when I went shopping there. Still, I remember that she had a nice smile. Wasn’t she going to marry her childhood friend or something…?

“The poor girl was raped by an evil noble.”

“T-That’s so cruel!”

“It really was. Apparently when her fiancé tried to stop him, the atrocious man killed him right in front of her! It was inhuman.”

Eh!? Hang on. A noble. Inhuman? D-Don’t tell me…!?

“Um, so what was the name of that noble?”

Millie-san looked around before bringing her mouth to my ear.

“You need to take care about speaking about him.”

“Y-, Yes.”

Even a huge gossip like Millie-san was this careful. I was getting a bad feeling about this. Alarm bells were ringing in my head.

“His name is Duke Sam Gordon. A few decades ago he was committing so many of these same atrocities that they exiled him from the country.”

“Wha-!? The Fiend!?”

“So you know about him too, Tilea-chan. They call him that exactly because of how many women fell prey to him, and how many commoners he terrorised,” she told me.

The truth was as bad as I had feared…

The Fiend, or Sam Gordon, was both an influential noble as well as one of the most powerful magicians in the country. The Sam family had been on the decline for years due to their luxurious spending habits. When Sam Gordon became the head of the family though, all of that changed, and they began quickly returning to power.

But his means were awful. He used his title and a sweet mask to trick women into supporting him financially, and the men he killed and took from without mercy.

He went so far that the King at the time, King Arcudas the Third, not only dissolved the Sam family, but also expelled Gordon from the family. Not something he could have done to such an old and powerful house without great reason. But the King cited an example of a Marquisate being dissolved as precedent. That was how badly the commoner citizens hated Gordon.

Well, I heard all of this from Mum though.

“Millie-san, why is that villain back in the Capital?”

“I don’t know. For some reason they allowed him back in. His Majesty is supposed to have hated the Duke though.”

Why did they cancel his punishment?

The Capital was in the middle of recovering. It didn’t make sense to bring trouble back in with this timing. Especially when countless VIPs were all head over heels for Edim and might ignore what Gordon was doing.

No, no, but Remilia-san was here. Someone like Remilia-san would never just let that villain do as he wanted.

“U-Um, we have to stop――”

“Shh!” she whispered, expression taking a grave turn. “Speak of the devil. The Duke is here.”

Millie-san gestured, and I saw a huge group parading down the road. The most important-looking one in the middle was probably Gordon himself.

He was unshaven and haggard, but… I guess he seemed handsome?

In his youth he must have been a real looker, but he was looking quite old now. The exile couldn’t have treated him well either because he looked like he was wasting away. His eyes were a different story though. His eyes were intense and predatory, like a bird of prey. And I supposed birds of a feather flocked together because his followers all seemed like scumbags too. Every step of the way, they were making trouble for nearby pedestrians. I guess they were looking for women.

“They seem as vulgar as the rumours, Millie-san.”

“They are. The day before yesterday they were walking around like this too, which was when Sammy-chan…”

“Since everybody already knows about him he isn’t even bothering with pretences anymore…”

“He really isn’t. He’s doing as he pleases now.”

“Just looking at him is making me uncomfortable. I’m going to go call the guards.”

“Leave it, Tilea-chan. It’s no use. Even the guards have been infiltrated by his lackeys.”

“R-Really?”

“Yes. If you report him without thinking you might be next.”

Uuu. I guess it would be smarter to keep away from danger. I decided to blend in with the crowd and wait.

The way these men were acting was unbearable, though.

Could nobody really stop them?

Remilia-san…?

The members of the Public Safety Force…?

I didn’t have enough information to say. At any rate, I just needed to stay hidden until he passed by.

I was waiting in trepidation when a middle-aged man suddenly leapt out into the street with a sword drawn.

“Gordon! I won’t forgive you!” he roared.

If looks could kill then Gordon would be dead ten times over.

“Insolence! How dare you behave that way in front of Gordon-sama!”

His lackeys all drew their swords. It was ten against one, with the first man surrounded, but he tried to attack anyway.

“Easy, men,” stopped Gordon. “I will at least hear the man out. So, what’s this business about not forgiving me?” he smirked assuredly.

Gordon seemed to be enjoying this.

“You raped my wife Lynn!”

“Ku ku, Lynn was it?”

“What are you laughing about!”

“Lynn… Lynn… Who was that again?”

“Are you saying you don’t remember!?”

“Do you remember how many times you’ve played with yourself?”

“Bastaaard!”

The man flew into a rage and charged. Gordon’s lackeys fell one after another. His momentum was shocking enough that some of the lackeys faltered. Breaking through the group, he came at Gordon with a downward cut to the shoulder.

Unfortunately… the sword never reached him. In the blink of an eye, somebody had parried him.

“I shall face you in place of my lord,” spoke the sudden newcomer.

It was an old man who gave off the air of a butler. Not just some old man though. His muscled body seemed like it was made of steel.

It was probably Nyger Key, Gordon’s right-hand-man. Nobody knew where he had come from. All anybody knew for sure was that he was always by Gordon’s side, and that he protected him from harm.

This man seemed profoundly dangerous indeed…

Nyger was standing there perfectly unruffled, as though he was in no danger at all. The man with the sword seemed to sense the danger too because he was taking slow steps back.

“Stand down, Nyger.”

“Sir.”

“Rejoice, man. In respect for your reckless bravery, I will personally be your opponent.”

Gordon drew his own sword. Despite its length though, he was holding it in one hand. It was clearly designed to be used by two. This wasn’t something any ordinary warrior could do.

“Are… Are you looking down on me?!”

“Oh? No need to hold back. My right hand has been defective since birth. This should be a fine handicap. Now come. Let us begin.”

“Don’t fuck with me! I don’t need your fucking handicap! I’ll fight you on the same grounds!”

The man swapped to the same one-handed grip and charged.

“He’s lying! Don’t be fooled!” I screamed in reflex.

It had all been for naught, though. Gordon immediately used his right hand to change the direction of his attack and stabbed the man through the chest.

“Guhah! Hahh, b-bastard, your right… hand…”

“Ohh! Heavens! By some miracle my right hand began working just a moment ago. Truly, I must thank you, friend! Ha ha ha!”

In his youth he often pretended that his right hand was paralysed. Particularly to garner sympathy from women, but also to trick enemies in battle. Mum was right. He really was a cowardly scumbag. His right hand, left hand, legs, he used this same trick and claimed all sorts of injuries to fool people.

“Brilliant as always, Gordon-sama.”

“Ku ku, who would have thought an old trick like that would work. Fools like that are still around?”

Gordon and his followers guffawed together. All of them were disgusting.

I was trembling in rage when…

“Oh! I very almost forgot. Just now somebody accused me of being a liar, didn’t they.”

Gordon glared my way.

U-, Uh oh.

I was supposed to be hiding, but I just got found.

Chapter 18 – Working towards an amiable conclusion (Finale)

After having Pervert(Niel) take Timu back to her room, I returned to find the pandemonium still there. Or was frantically begging Mum, “Don’t stab me!” while Mum was completely ignoring that and continuing to interrogate him with the knife.

And then…

Ah boy, Or finally broke into tears.

“Mum! How can you just bully the weak like that!”

“T-Tilea, ah, um, you’re wrong. The truth is he’s actually――”

“…Mum. Please, let’s just all calm down.”

“N-No, um, he’s a powerful noble and…”

“Mum, do you reaaally think that this is still some act?” I pointed at the pathetic sight of Or.

Huge droplets of tears were running down his face and a flood of mucus was joining it.

This is your Fiend?

If this really was some sort of act it deserved some kind of next-level Academy award. If Mum was right and he really was some kind of gangster, I don’t think I’d be able to trust anyone anymore.

After seeing this, did Mum really still think he was still somebody from the criminal underworld? Please just see reality already.

I turned a somewhat condemning gaze at her. Thankfully she seemed to have calmed down a little. I watched as she awkwardly sheathed her knife. Or watched her with relief too.

Isn’t that great, Or? You must have been so scared.

I patted the sniffling Or on the shoulder.

“Uuuu, hic, T-Tilea-sama~”

“Now, now. Don’t I always say it? A grown man shouldn’t cry anymore,” I consoled with my maternal instinct on full throttle.

Apparently Mum had realised her mistake after watching the two of us. She wasn’t glaring at Or suspiciously anymore, for one thing. I could even see a bit of guilt in her expression.

“I-, I suppose can’t really… see this as an act.”

“Right? Or really is this pathetic.”

“B-, But even if he’s pathetic right now… he might still try to get revenge for this later…”

Mumu, was Mum still doubting him?

“Or, are you thinking about taking revenge for today?”

“O-Outrageous. W-, Why would I ever think of doing something so foolish…? Impossible. Absolutely impossible. I-, I-, just how can I get you to trust me…? Uuuu, hic-!”

And now he was crying again. Mum, please, it’s reached the level of bullying already.

“Aahh, you made him cry, Mum.”

“…I’m sorry.”

Or was so pitiful that Mum finally apologised. Finally, the misunderstanding was solved.

“And that settles it.”

I let out a relieved sigh.

“Tilea, I know now that Ortissio-san might not bad person. The problem of the debt still hasn’t gone again, though.”

“But I already told you, Or said he doesn’t care about that.”

“Tilea! You can’t just take advantage of his kindness like this. If a kind-hearted person like Ortissio-san is bankrupted because of you, how are you going to take responsibility!”

Oh boy. Somehow the situation had done a 180 and now I was the bad guy. She was treating me like some wicked daughter who scammed the kind-hearted Ortissio.

W-, Well, I might not have been intending it but it’s true that Or was financially supporting me.

Huh? Then wasn’t I like the Fiend? ――Nono, I’d deal with the debt somehow. Yes, it was a debt in the billions, but Dryas-kun would definitely have a plan.

“Aahh~ Mum, about that. It’s not me or Or you should be asking, but the brains of this operation.”

“And who might the brains be?”

“And elf named Dryas-kun. He’s super smart. He’ll definitely find a way for us to make the billions back.”

“Tilea, you have an Elf of the Forest working here? The elves are an exclusive bunch. To lend any help to a human…”

“Oh, surprised, Mum? Huhu, it’s amazing, right? But it’s true.”

“I can’t believe it… But even if one of the elves really was here, would he even understand how to manage a shop?”

“That’s why Dryas-kun is so amazing. You know, Dryas-kun isn’t just wise in the ways of the forest; he’s incredible in anything he does.”

“And such an amazing person is willing to help you?”

“Of course. The proof is in the pudding! Let me just bring him here. You just have some tea while you wait, okay, Mum?”

And so I headed downstairs to explain the situation to him; Mum wanted him to explain the plan to revive the restaurant.

“As my lady commands,” he immediately replied.

God, how I hated his hot-guy voice.

Anyhow, he and Mum ended up speaking in private.

Almost an hour later――

Mum and Dryas-kun emerged from the room. Not that I was worried. This was Dryas-kun. Obviously he had some sort of plan.

Now then, I wonder how it went.

“Mum, there was no problem, right?”

“Yes, yes. Dryas-san is fantastic!”

H-Huh. Mum seemed oddly excited. She was really singing his praises.

You’re pretty good, Dryas. Even seducing married women, you’re not just a hot guy for show.

…Damnit, something this was really frustrating. Maybe I’ll blow you up with some explosion magic!

I reflexively glared at him jealously. Still, Dryas-kun simply returned my gaze with a smile. Returning glares of enmity with a bright smile. Just how much of a hot guy are you.

Well whatever. How did the debt thing go?

“Well? About the debt?…”

“He had a ground-breaking plan, and took into account the long-term consequences as well. With a plan like that you can definitely get your money back.”

I see. Maybe instead of talking to me I should have just sent her to Dryas-kun from the start.

“Sorry about this, Dryas-kun. It seems like I made you do a lot of work.”

“Not at all. For your sake I wouldn’t shy from any amount of work.”

With that, Dryas-kun headed back underground. Even as he left he was giving off this ‘cool guy’ aura. If I thought like a woman, maybe I’d have fallen for him already.

“Tilea, Mum can finally rest easy.”

“See? Dryas-kun is reliable.”

“Huu♪ I wonder if Dryas-san has a girlfriend.”

“Gosh~ Who knows. But he’s hot so maybe he does.”

“Huhu, you’ll have to try harder too, Tilea.”

“Huh? Mum, are you misunderstanding something?”

“Uhuhu, your mum is very understanding of interspecies relations.”

“Mum――”

“Will my first grandchild be a half-elf? …I’m sure they’d be cute, just like you two are.”

Mum gazed in the direction Dryas-kun had left in as though she were looking at her future grandchild.

M-Mum, stop that. Just Loser(Bizef) was bad enough.

Oh, but if I had a child with Remilia-san, they certainly would be a half-elf.

■ ◇ ■ ◇

Sera was at a loss. The terrifying Ortissio had been reduced to a wailing child.

Why?

It’s true that I had some experience in jobs in the like of an adventurer. I had picked up my knife skills during those times. But my ability was still barely better than an amateur’s.

Why did he look so scared then?

No, don’t be fooled, Sera!

His attitude only changed after my daughter appeared. He seemed incredibly invested in fooling her. I had to find out the truth. It was obvious that he was acting pathetic for the purpose of deceiving her.

Hahhh, I really had to apologise to her later. This man was an exceptional actor. His sobbing face was incredibly believable. I had come here thinking Tilea was fooled because she was an air-head but anyone would be fooled by a man like this.

“Quit with the acting, and show us the real you!”

I made thrusting motions with the knife. Of course I hadn’t really planned on stabbing him. It was just a threat. I was going to drag out the true nature of this swindler. Maybe then Tilea would open her eyes.

And so I desperately continued to threaten him. I even made sure to grind his pride as a noble into bits.

Ortissio’s attitude wouldn’t change.

I decided to step it up. I said something that crossed the line.

Perhaps it was a bit much… Honestly, it wouldn’t be strange for him to flip out and attack me.

It was scary. What would he do? Nobles were vicious like nothing else. My mind flashed back to the various atrocities of the Fiend.

But it would be worth it if I could get my daughter to wake up. Even if he did attack, I would fight. Outside was Nielsen-san, and most importantly we had Bizef-san here in the Capital. If Ortissio revealed himself, I would have Tilea come find Bisef-san for help. My safety wasn’t as important as getting her to see the truth.

But contrary to my expectations, Ortissio simply single-mindedly apologised. This man was truly patient. Even after I had provoked him so much he never resisted. That wasn’t normal. Especially so for the masses of pride that powerful aristocrats were. Ordinarily at least some violence would have been expected.

He wouldn’t change. Ortissio continued to beg for forgiveness.

C-Could it be… Ortissio was really just a timid young man with more money than sense? If he was the kind of person Tilea described…

No, but that couldn’t be. Just a while ago I saw something in him that even the legendary Fiend didn’t have. It was just that I couldn’t prove it.

None of this was working. I had no choice but to resolve myself.

At this point nothing else would work. It didn’t matter if I became a criminal.

I started to really stab at him. Not aiming for grievous harm, but to cut him. Even a kind person would snap. No matter how patient this man was, even he had to have limits.

But again, contrary to expectations, Ortissio didn’t fight back. Each time I stabbed at him he just continued to plea, “Stop! Please stop!”

……

…………

………………

C-, Could I really have misunderstood…?

I reluctantly lowered the knife. I did continue to provoke him but none of it gave any fruit.

And then, finally, Ortissio, no, Ortissio-san began to cry. It seems he really, really truly, didn’t want me to stab him. “How can you just bully the weak like that!” Tilea said reprovingly, looking at me with a gaze that seemed to said ‘Goodness me.’

Ortissio-san was heaving and sobbing into my daughter’s chest. I had to admit, I hadn’t ever met, or even ever heard of a member of the criminal underworld act in such a pathetic manner.

I-, It seemed that I had erred.

It must have been my imagination earlier. Perhaps I projected onto him because of the memories I had of powerful nobles.

It seemed like I had really wronged him.

I apologised. Ortissio-san finally looked relieved.

Aah~ I really made a show of myself. Ortissio-san wasn’t fooling Tilea. I understood that now.

But I still had concerns. If he wasn’t trying to fool my daughter, then why did he hand her to much money? And before he had been calling her “Tilea-san” but by now it was “Tilea-sama! Tilea-sama!”

Why was a noble going this far to abase himself in front of her?

Gasp! So that’s why!

Ortissio-san was in love with Tilea.

Once the idea hit me, I began to really examine him. The way Ortissio-san looked at my daughter was like he was intoxicated. It was almost as though he was looking at a goddess or something.

S-Speaking of which, this reminded me of somebody I used to know. He was the lazy, useless son of a certain merchant family. He was a nice guy, but he liked to show off and was a bit of a fop.
One day he started showering money on this woman from a bar. So much that it was throwing away his fortune. He was a pitiful man. The woman had skilfully cajoled him with sweet words and an ensnaring voice. Nobody could understand why he would go so far for a woman like that, but the person himself retorted,

“You can’t find a woman like that anywhere else.”

Tilea, you’ve unknowingly done the same things as that wicked woman did. Of course I don’t think of you as the type of person who would purposefully cheat men out of their money. I don’t think you would, that you would have it in you. Or even that you be interested.

But you’ve unintentionally ensnared him. Ortissio-san really would bankrupt himself without a care for you, you know?

Do you understand, Tilea? You’ve messed up a man’s life.

Tilea had no idea what I was thinking, happily chatting away to Ortissio-san.

Hahh. Tilea’s lack of awareness was vicious in its own way. Even though her personality was the complete opposite of a seductress…

“Tilea! You can’t just take advantage of his kindness like this. If a kind-hearted person like Ortissio-san is bankrupted because of you, how are you going to take responsibility!” I scolded her.

Her response was something else I’d never expect. Apparently the brains behind this restaurant was somebody else, and that person was going to take responsibility. Not only that, but apparently they were one of the revered Elves of the Forest. I couldn’t hide my anxiety at yet another involved party being introduced.

Elves were very insular people. Why was my daughter surrounded by so many oddballs. My daughter was going on about how the elf was “the ultimate brainiac” and her “strategist”. I supposed the elves were known for knowing a lot about the forest.

But what did they know about management?

My mind was filled with questions. But Tilea seemed absolutely sure of him. Maybe it was a good idea to simply meet him first.

I told her that I wanted to speak to him without interruptions. She responded happily.

Before long she brought the elf along. He had sleek blue hair and a tall frame, appearing with incredible dignity.

W-, What beautiful features…

His almond-shaped eyes were clear but filled with intelligence, and although I had heard of the elves’ famed beauty, this man seemed like a step above the rest.

“It is my honour to make your acquaintance. My name is Dryas Bo Malferand.”

“T-, The honour is mine. My daughter has been in your care. My name is Sera.”

We began with some small-talk but even then I could feel his intelligence. When we moved onto the main purpose of the conversation, I was shocked.

A-, Amazing! He was so amazing!

Dryas-san was intelligent, too intelligent, and the advice he gave was astounding and spot-on. I brought up my concern about the continued existence of the store and he brought up plan after plan to tackle the issue. And not only in highly plausible ways, but with methods that I would never have dreamed of.

Before I knew it I had lost track of time as I spoke with him.

Eventually our conversation ended.

Honestly speaking, I had never met anybody as talented as he was. I hoped he would continue looking over my daughter.

I turned to him.

“Dryas-san, I hope that you’ll continue looking after my daughter.”

“Of course. I intend to give my life in supporting your Ojousama,” he replied with confidence.

A man like him really could support my daughter from behind. Apparently Dryas-san had been driven from his elven village when my daughter had warmly welcomed him in. As thanks for that, he was helping out Tilea with the store. What a tale of duty.

He was handsome and polite. He could immediately understand my point or concerns, and answered with those considerations in mind. Not only was he modest, he was also brimming with confidence.

Originally I thought of Bizef-san as the best choice for her, but it seems that an unexpected dark horse had appeared. And my daughter didn’t seem too unhappy with him either. There was the problem of species to be sure, but it was a minor detail in the end. With a girl missing as many screws as Tilea, the more responsible the man, the better.

Dryas-san left, and then a number of Tilea’s other acquaintances game to greet me.

When that was over, Tilea and I had tea as we chatted for a while. I decided to casually ask how her relationship with Dryas-san was.

“Tilea, I mentioned this earlier but your Mum doesn’t have any problems with elves, you know? Don’t you feel the same way?”

“Mn, I don’t mind either, Mum. Far from it, elves are actually my favourite species.

“I knew it!”

“Ah, but Mum, listen, it’s true that I like elves but Dryas-kun is――”

“Ahh~ I thought so. My grandchild as a half-elf. I’m sure they’ll be so cute.”

“Yeah. Mn, I’m hoping that my kids will be half-elves too. But you know? Dryas-kun and I aren’t like that at all, okay?”

Tilea continued to deny any relationship with Dryas-san. My daughter was honest, and adorable for it. But whenever it came to romance she was clumsy and awkward. I suppose I couldn’t blame her for being hesitant about such an incredible man.

Alright. I decided that as a mother I had to support her all the way!

“Of course. I intend to give my life in supporting your Ojousama.”

Ojousama is used, but it’s more like saying ‘the young miss’. Only I didn’t want to use that because it sounds a lot more distant than it necessarily has to be.

Oh, also Sera refers to elves as ‘elf-san’, indicating a certain amount of respect for them. Maybe because they’re like, semi-legendary amongst the humans or something, like reclusive wisemen? Not enough to justify a ‘Lord’ or the awkwardness of ‘-sama’ in the translation, but enough to earn capitalisation for Elves of the Forest.

Maybe it’s kind of like how the Nords respect the Greybeards.

Chapter 17 – Working towards an amiable conclusion (Opening)

Mum was trying to stab Or. Her face was ghastly pale. Even the hand holding the knife was trembling. Everything pointed to something being really wrong.

“Mum, what on earth happened…?”

“I knew it. You were being tricked, Tilea. He might pretend to be kind but behind the mask is a terrifying villain!” she rambled.

Speaking of which… wasn’t she speaking just like this that time when she thought Timu was a demon?

Mum likes to over-think things, and has this terrible habit of fixating on an idea once it gets into her head.

I was pretty sure it was another case of chuunibyou putting weird ideas into her mind. That and the fact that Or was a noble. A terrifying villain, though? I honestly didn’t think she could be any further from the mark.

“Calm down, Mum. You’re being ridiculous.”

“Tilea, you’re naive and earnest so you can’t understand, but I do.”

“Mum, it’s a misunderstanding. Or’s like the complete opposite of the Fiend. You honestly can’t even compare them.”

“Gods, why must my daughter be so…!” Mum exclaimed, as she massaged her temples.

I was starting to worry she’d get wrinkles from being so angry.

“Mum, let’s just calm down first. Or is just――”

“Enough! He’s hiding his power! Open your eyes! He’s completely calm even though I’m brandishing a knife!”

Calm…?

That couldn’t be. Or was as frail as they came. It was unthinkable that he could remain calm. To begin with, how did things come to this? I always thought of Mum as mild and gentle. What could have led to her drawing a knife?

Or! Just what the heck did you do to anger Mum so much! We spent so much damned time teaching you to be respectful and then you go and send her crazy instead!?

I cursed him in my mind. Repaying kindness with enmity! I covered for him all this time because I pitied him and this was how he repaid me!

My head shot in his direction and I sent him a death glare.

“Hiie! T-Tilea-sama!”

“Orrrr… So you have betrayed me…”

“U-U-Unthinkable!”

“Then explain why my mother is so angry that she’s threatening you with a knife. It looks like you’ve already forgotten what Niel and I said to you downstairs.”

“O-, Of course not. I have taken great care around Sera-sama.”

“Then… explain this.”

“Hiee! M-My deepest apologies!” he said as he trembled with a cold sweat.

Geez, if you’re going to get this scared then be more careful to begin with. Who told you to turn my life into a damned soap opera.

Hahhh… To be honest I already knew what was going on. Since Mum has always been even-tempered, this idiot probably saw an inch and took a mile. And since Mum was already thinking about the Fiend, she came into the situation with a prejudice against nobles.

No wonder he enraged her so.

“Isn’t that enough, Mum? Just put the knife down.”

“Eh-!? B-, But…”

“Mum, what part of this looks like a fiend to you?”

I pointed at Or who was now crying and trembling on the ground. Honestly he looked like nothing else except some kid who ran home crying after being picked on by the neighbourhood bully. I hoped she would just forgive him already.

“T-, That can’t be. He-, just before he was… I-I know! You have to listen, Tilea. Just now when it was the two of us I felt this incredible bloodlust!”

“Bloodlust? From Or?”

“Right. I thought I was going to be killed!”

“Or! You’ve finally made me angry.”

“I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-, I-I would not dare! K-Killing!? I just glared at her a lit――”

“Or! You dare glare at my Mum!?”

“H-Hiie! P-Please forgive me!”

“Hahh… Or, who should you be apologising to right now?”

“O-, Of course!”

He turned to Mum with a serious expression. It looked like he was going to apologise in earnest to her.

“Sera-sama. For the many trespasses against your honour that I have committed, I sincerely apologise. Please, please find it in your merciful heart to forgive me.”

“Wha-! So shameless! Quit with the acting, and show us the real you!”

Mum started making thrusting motions with the knife.

Oi, oi, stop that, Mum! You’re seriously on the verge of becoming a criminal here!

“Wait-! Mum! Let’s all calmly――”

“Hiiiiie――! P-Please stop this! Sera-sama, p-please stop stabbing. Please. Hiie, stop!” Or began to beg in tears.

Mum was having none of it though.

“T-This should be nothing to you. What are you begging for!”

Please stop, Mum. This is the real him. Look, he’s completely frightened. Wow, you’ve totally made a grown man cry…

You’re so ruthless, Mum!

“Mum, just stop that already. I’m really feeling sorry for him now.”

“Wait, Tilea. You’re getting it wrong. There must be some kind of misunderstanding here. This can’t be his true nature. I definitely sensed something even more terrifying than the Fiend, you know.”

“You’re just tired, Mum. A lot has happened, right? It’s natural that you misunderstood. Let’s have a break, okay?”

“Ahh, geez! Are you still convinced that he’s a good person? Tilea, I’m not just tired. This man is definitely some kind of villain!”

It-, It’s impossible.

She wasn’t listening at all. Mum was refusing to accept that she was wrong here. But how could I convince her…?

Suddenly,

“Oneesama, have you finished speaking to Esteemed Mother? I was hoping to get on with Ortissio’s execution, actually…” Timu said in anticipation.

Magical Bullets were already floating by her hands.

Oh. Right. There was the issue of Timu as well. Honestly, I wished that things could just be simple for once.

Timu looked like a predator that had cornered her prey, which was just making things even worse for Or.

“We’re not going to execute him, Timu. Be a good girl and settle down, okay?”

“However, Ortissio’s rebelliousness is plain as day. Of all things, he cursed at our Esteemed Mother. If that is not a clear sign of his lack of loyalty then I do not know what is.”

“No, no, please wait, Camilla-sama! There are very, very complex reasons behind all of this!”

“Making excuses, Ortissio? How unsightly. Accept your punishment with some dignity.”

Oh dear. The angrier she was getting, the larger the bullets were growing. The things had gone from the size of a tennis ball to easily fifty centimetres across.

I had no doubts that if Or was hit by those…

His death warrant was close to signed. I had to stop this.

“G-, Girls! Stop aggravating him! You’ll be killed!”

And of course the thing with Mum was still going on in the sides as well.

Killed(lol) by Or…?

If Or was really that powerful I’m pretty sure the whole Evil God Army would be dead right now.

Back to Timu though, she was still verbally abusing him as she brandished her magic. And of course Mum was in a panic, trying to stop Timu from “being killed!”.

What on earth had my life turned into.

And on that note, Mum was still holding that bloody knife! Just put it down already!

I decided to just try and stop Mum first. I would get Timu to leave for now. With her here, things were uncontrollable.

“Timu, you head downstairs and wait for me.”

“B-, But Oneesama. I must purge this mistake of a kin.”

I guess she was dead-set on terminating him.

Geez. I supposed it was time to get forceful.

I grabbed Timu by the scruff of the neck.

“W-, What is it, Oneesama…? I was just about to execute damned Ortissi――”

“Yes, yes, come on now, stop making things even more complicated.”

“O-, Oneesama, wa-, wait-”

“Mum, Or, I’ll be right back.”

With Timu still hanging from my hand, I left the room when suddenly I bumped into Pervert(Nielsen). Who knows why he was even here. Actually a number of the Praetorian Guard were here as well.

W-, What on earth was this lot doing?

Well, whatever.

“Niel, good timing. Take Timu downstairs for me.”

Pervert(Nielsen) graciously complied. With that, Pervert(Nielsen) respectfully led Timu underground.

■ ◇ ■ ◇

Ortissio was deep in thought.

Why was this happening to me?

Tilea-sama had been discussing things with that human(Sera) for a while now. I don’t know if that human(Sera) had some grudge against me but she was doing everything in her power to tear Tilea-sama and I apart. Each time Tilea-sama looked at me with suspicion I could feel myself physically shrinking in on myself.

Why had things come to this!?

Not only was the venerable Tilea-sama suspicious of me but my beloved and respected Camilla-sama was glaring at me murderously. I wouldn’t have been surprised if she shot me. I could see myself dying at any moment. It was the definition of sitting on a powder keg.

My legs were trembling despite myself, and I could hear my teeth chatter. I had no doubts that I looked like an utter clown at this moment, terrified of his death.

But I implore you not to misunderstand. What I feared was not mere death. It was the thought of dying in dishonour that terrified me to the bone. The thought of death as a rebel because of some ridiculous misunderstanding was unbearable!

Unheeding of my wishes, however, reality continued to progress in ever more unfavourable directions. At this rate a traitor’s execution was just around the corner.

Things were looking extremely bad.

Why. Why did everybody doubt me so! To be perfectly frank, my loyalty to the Evil God Army was as deep as it came. For Tilea-sama and Camilla-sama, I could discard my life at the drop of a pin.

But why.

Why did things always backfire!

That human(Sera) was going too far so I just lost my temper a little. Why did they have to doubt my loyalty like this?

What should I have done instead, then?

As a loyal retainer, what should I have done? Should I have ignored the words of that petty human(Sera)?

Out of the question! Should I have stayed silent while she debased the mighty Tilea-sama!?

I felt an urge to shout exactly that. But I knew that it was unlikely they would listen to me. I understood. As tragic as it was, the reality was that the dependability scale in the Evil God Army looked something like this:

Camilla-sama > Evil God Army’s Officers > Edim and other vampires > That Human(Sera) > … > Insurmountable Wall > The Underground Empire’s Terranean Restaurant > Ortissio

I finally understood just what Tilea-sama meant when she used that term, “Insurmountable Wall”. There was no better phrase to describe my current situation. I was even less trusted than That Human(Sera).

So, so frustrating!

Still, there was no time to waste on bemoaning my misfortunes. If I didn’t do something soon I was going to meet my end as a rebel.

I was frantically running options through my head when suddenly…

“T-, That can’t be. He-, just before he was… I-I know! You have to listen, Tilea. Just now when it was the two of us I felt this incredible bloodlust!”

That Human(Sera) dropped a bombshell.

Holy fuck! Can That Human(Sera) not go three minutes without making life harder for me!

By now I could tell that Tilea-sama was apparently very fond of That Human(Sera). And Tilea-sama just found out that I had threatened her favourite toy.

O-, Oh dear…

“Or! You’ve finally made me angry.”

Ohhhhhh dear, oh shit, this was bad.

Just as I predicted, Tilea-sama’s looks of distrust had turned into a look of murder. Every cell in my body was now dedicated to looking for some excuse to survive this.

“I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-, I-I would not dare! K-Killing!? I just glared at her a lit――”

“Or! You dare glare at my Mum!?”

“H-Hiie! P-Please forgive me!” I apologised as my whole body ran with a river of cold sweat. I was pretty sure that I didn’t have a drop of water left in me. I just prayed that I got through to her as I looked at Tilea-sama.

“Hahh… Or, who should you be apologising to right now?”

But Tilea-sama wanted me to apologise to That Human(Sera) instead.

Ugh, why did I have to apologise to the likes of a human. I couldn’t understand it. A member of the demon race, the strongest race, apologising to an inferior species like a human…

Oh!? Of course!

General Commander Nielsen had warned me about exactly this. Human or not, this Sera was Tilea-sama’s temporary parent.

Just as General Commander Nielsen had said…

“A truly loyal servant would show respect to even the shoes worn by their master.”

What a fool I had been. Tilea-sama had been birthed from none other than the womb of That Human. No, That Lady. Come to think of it, she was the temple in which the Evil God-sama had descended upon the land. That would make her Temple-sama then.

It was foolish of me to see Temple-sama as just some other human. Because of that my smiles were fake and I secretly looked down on her. With such preposterous thoughts in my heart how could anything have possible gone smoothly!

What a fool!

Temple-sama had little mana and her body was frail and weak. Thanks to that I made light of her but that was a huge mistake!

I immediately corrected my posture and turned to her.

“Sera-sama. For the many trespasses against your honour that I have committed, I sincerely apologise. Please, please find it in your merciful heart to forgive me,” I apologised, as I bowed deeply, body prostrated.

“Wha-! So shameless! Quit with the acting, and show us the real you!”

My apology was not accepted, however. Far from it, her stabbing motions renewed with more vigour.

This was serious. If she ever managed to hit me it was very likely that Temple-sama would be injured. Try as I might to repress my mana, the body of a demon was incredibly tough. If she stabbed too hard the force would rebound onto her hand.

This was bad. This was incredibly bad. What was I to do?

Remove the knife…?

But Temple-sama had too little mana. What if the impact broke her bones. I wasn’t even entirely sure how tough a normal human was so trying to adjust my strength would be hell.

Then was I to avoid the knife…?

But I had already lost the timing to do that.

Kuh! There was no other way. If Temple-sama was to be injured then I was as good as gone. Tilea-sama would abandon me.

Everything would be over.

“Hiiiiie――! P-Please stop this! Sera-sama, p-please stop stabbing. Please. Hiie, stop!” Or began to beg in tears.

So I abandoned my pride and self-respect, and started begging Temple-sama to stop.

Chapter 16 – The Fiend’s True Colours – “Wow, I’m feeling so worn out.”

“Tiiiiimu!”

I ran through the streets shouting my beloved sister’s name.

The Fiend was coming!

I sprinted with all my might to save Timu from being a meat slave.

I was heading straight for the Academy. My surroundings turned into a blur as I ran.

Yaaah! I’ll break Mach 1 if I have to!

I arrived at the Academy in no time. It felt incredibly fast even for myself. Did I just teleport? I think I might have broken a record. I could probably make nationals.

Now that I was here, I had a look around. The other students seemed to be on the way home. I found myself in the midst of cheerful students.

But where was Timu?

I continued searching the academy grounds but I couldn’t find her anywhere. Could she already have gone home? Did I pass her on the way here…?

I decided to ask somebody about it.

“U-Um, excuse me?” I called out to a sweet-looking girl in a ponytail.

“Is something the matter?”

“I’m looking for my sister. Do you know a girl called Timu?”

“Hmmm. I wish I could help you but with just a name… There are thousands of other students…”

“Ah, then I’ll describe her. She’s a cute girl about this tall, with red eyes and silver hair――”

“Hiie! S-Silver hair!? D-Don’t tell me, C-Camilla-sama…?”

Hu-, Huuuh? How did silver hair turn into “Camilla”?

Wai-! D-, Don’t tell me!

“S-Saaay, is that silver-haired girl forcing people to call her Camilla?”

“Y-, Yes. By now everybody at school knows. At first people thought she was an oddball for trying to use the name of that legendary demon. But gradually the students, and even the teachers began to acknowledge Camilla-sama…”

“O-, Oh my god…”

“Ah!? P-Please don’t misunderstand! I-I’m not trying to talk bad about C-Camilla-sama at all! F-Forgive meeeeee!” screamed the girl as she dashed off.

“Ah-, wai-, hey-, aah geez…”

Well, I already pretty much knew what was going on.

Timu, you…

You’ve really done it now…

Timu was going around introducing herself as Demon Camilla. She’s a chuunibyou so of course she was. Normally nobody with a lick of common sense would let that pass.

But right now Timu’s homeroom teacher was Edim’s kin(Jayjay). I can see it now. Timu ⇒ Edim ⇒ Jayjay

Ah, god, that idiot! At this rate your graduation certificate is going to say Camilla as well, you know!

You might be happy with that now but you’ll regret it in the future! You’ll regret it so badly that you can’t help but squirm on your bed, okay!

Oh goodness, another thing to worry about. But I could deal with that later. Right now I had to deal with the Fiend first.

I continued searching the campus for a while but there was still no sign of Timu. Her bag wasn’t in her classroom either, so I was starting to think she wasn’t here.

Did we really pass each other by?

I decided to try searching the way home, this time taking shortcuts and detours into account as well…

Before long I spotted two girls walking down a narrow lane. One of them had glittering silver hair! Timu!

T-Thank goodness. I made it in time before she bumped into the Fiend.

I approached the pair with a smile on my face.

Timu seemed to be getting along with the brown-haired girl next to her. Looking carefully, the brown-haired girl was Edim, and she was carrying Timu’s bag――――wai-, Timu! You’re making your friend carry your stuff?

Speaking of which, it feels like Edim is always carrying her bag. Ah, geez. Edim is a nice girl so I don’t think she cares but if you stay so overbearing you’ll lose all your friends, Timu. I’d better have a long talk about this as well.

But first…

“Timu.”

“Why if it isn’t Oneesama!” she said with a bright smile.

My sister really is adorable. I can’t let the Fiend hurt this smile.

“Timu, it’s a bit sudden but you can’t go home. The Fiend might attack you.”

“Oneesama, what might this “fiend” be…?”

“It’s Or. He’s been playing the nice guy all while planning to trap us!”

“Wha-!? Damned Ortissio again!?”

Timu seemed shocked. Yeah. I was shocked too. Ortissio, the scion of a major noble family. A bourgeois just like the Fiend. A wolf in lamb’s skin just waiting to turns us sisters into meat slaves.

“It’s hard to believe, right?”

“Unforgivable! Damned Ortissio! Give him an inch and he takes a mile!” shouted Timu.

“O-Ortissio-sama was planning a rebellion…?”

Edim seemed to have trouble believing it as well. Yeah. If Mum hadn’t told me I’d have never noticed either. Oh no! Mum! I left her with the Fiend! Oh no. I told her not to talk to him but what if in her worry for us she tries to do it anyway. I have to get back!

“That’s how it is, so you need to find somewhere to hide, Timu. I’ll head back now and――”

“No, dealing with my failure of a kin is my responsibility. Damned Ortissio’s head is mine.”

“You can’t, Timu. What if he attacks you!”

“O-Oneesama, that is too much! Are you saying I would lose to the likes of Ortissio?”

“No, no, I mean――”

He’s a Fiend, right? He’s a noble just like the Fiend!

Just because he can’t do push-ups doesn’t mean…

And just because he comes sobbing to me when everyone picks on him doesn’t mean…

And just because he’s calcium deficient and he tearfully drinks the milk I force on him every day doesn’t mean…

……

…………

………………

Huh? Why the hell was I so scared of Ortissio again? Ortissio as the Fiend? Whoawhoawhoa, hold your horses!

The actual Fiend that Mum talked about might be a terrifying guy but that has nothing to do with Or, right? The Fiend wasn’t just some noble. He was also a terrifying magician and he used that to terrorise others as well. The only thing he has in common with Or is being a noble. Wow, I’ve been a massive idiot.

Hiding from Or?

Being afraid of Or?

Wow, what the hell. I could take Or down with one punch. Plus, I’ve even got Edim and Myuu if it comes down to a fight. Plus, Edim has her happy(?) group of kin as well. They could probably even hold off a whole army for five minutes.

Wow. Thanks to Mum I got a bit too panicked there.

“Oneesama, let us immediately bring down the iron hammer of justice upon that traitor!”

Uh oh. Timu looks really serious. Or already has a prior history of rebellion. Timu might really murder Or with her Magical Bullets at this rate. Now that she’s improved her skills at the Academy I can really see it happening.

“Ah~ Calm down, Timu. If you use all your power you might really kill Or.”

“Oneesama, even three tenths of my power would be enough to slay the likes of Ortissio.”

“R-, Right… With how powerful you are these days, I’ll bet you could even kill him with a tenth of your power.”

“A tenth… Hmmm, that might be difficult even for me. Even with all his flaws Ortissio is still my kin. If you wish for me to kill him with a tenth of my power then I must formulate a strategy.”

“U-, Ummm, Timu, that’s not what I――”

“Huhu, please leave it to me. Since you asked, Oneesama, I shall not disappoint. I shall show you how I slay Ortissio with just one tenth of my power.”

Oh boy. Why are chuunibyou so hard to talk to. She’s really going to fire magical bullets at Or now. Oh geez, I might not be worried for her safety now but I’ve got a possible murder to deal with instead.

“Timu! Listen to me!”

“Understood.”

“You know, your Oneechan just kind of made a mistake. Looks like Or wasn’t actually planning anything too bad.”

“In other words, Ortissio has done no wrong?”

“Right, right! Exactly. So let’s not do anything violent, okay?”

“You are mistaken, Oneesama.”

“Eh!? How come?”

“Even if Ortissio was truly not planning anything, the moment you suspected him of treachery was enough to show how shallow his loyalty was. He must be punished.”

“Um, isn’t that a little too strict on him?”

“Huhu, Oneesama, that cur already has a previous conviction. Even if you forgive him, I cannot accept any mongrels that defy my beloved sister.”

Whoa, Timu seems really angry. I might have made a mess of things. Let’s try and reverse the positions. Somebody tried to attack Timu. Since Timu forgave him, I somehow held back my anger. Then Timu told me that the bastard was thinking of trying something again. Yep. I’d kill him too. Actually, I’d have killed him on his first try.

Well, I can understand where she’s coming from now. Still, I can’t just let her be a criminal. Also I’m feeling really sorry for Or again. Even though he always follows her around, going “Camilla-sama, Camilla-sama”…

Although recently there’s been a lot of “Tilea-sama, Tilea-sama” as well…

It’d be too pitiful to let Timu beat him up. What the!? Could this be my maternal instincts surfacing!? Anyway, maybe I’ll try getting Edim to help.

“Or hasn’t even done anything and we’re going to punish him. Edim, don’t you think it’s a bit much as well?”

“I shall abide by Camilla-sama.”

“I know that you like Timu but please abide by me this time.”

“Eh-!? B-But, but I…”

“Edim, you can’t always just be following Timu. What do you think this time?” I continued.

“Edim, Oneesama has given an order. I will allow it. Speak your mind,” added Timu.

“I-, I understand. Let me see. I have not personally seen any signs of Ortissio-sama plotting rebellion. However, it is a fact that Tilea-sama has suspected him of it. I believe that he must be punished, but perhaps the death sentence is going too far.”

“Edim, are you saying you want to forgive that Ortissio!”

“H-Hiie! M-My deepest apologies. I-I was simply…”

“Simply what! It’s unthinkable that you would feel that way if you had any loyalty towards Oneesama!”

“That’s enough, Timu. Edim was just speaking her mind.”

“H-, However, Oneesama…”

“Anyway, just leave Ortissio to me. This is an executive order.”

“An executive order!? I-, I understand. If that is the case then I have nothing left to say. However, when you execute him, please allow me to be the executioner.”

Haha, wow, this ‘executive order’ thing is convenient as always. Why are chuunibyou so weak to words like this. It’s not like I use it all the time but it’s stopped a few of Timu’s rampages before. Anyway, I’ve forced Timu to accept. All that’s left is to solve the misunderstanding with Mum.

Along the way Edim headed off to her dorm, so it was just Timu and I when we arrived at the store.

“Mum, we really need to have a talk――”

“Tilea!?”

“Yup, it’s me, Tilea. What’s wrong, Mum? Is everything okay?”

“Don’t come inside!”

Heh!? How come?

I entered the restaurant to find chaos.

W-What the heck is going on!?

Mum was trying to stab Or.
