I tried asking for permission for Last Boss translations but,

after explaining that MMORPG web novels were becoming popular with us, and giving him nothing but published novels as an example, I got,

Σ(;´д`) Those are all published stories by pro’s. They’re on a different level to me.
If my story gets translated amongst theirs, it’ll make the bad points of my story seem even worse, so please spare me.
It’ll be like a battle between Vegeta and Goku and Bills and Brolli, and then suddenly throwing Yamcha into the mix.
Anyway, I’d like to hold back on the English translation.
My level is overwhelmingly too low to be exposed to people overseas.

And so that’s how it is. Sorry guys.

    1. Being humble is somewhat of a rarity amongst online writers. I’m personally proud of him for being able to admit to his own shortcomings.

Though I can also counter that people will never know who he is if he doesn’t put himself out there.~

      1. True. But feedback is necessary to develop as a writer. Modesty is good… But to a writer, feedback is experience needed to grow so I think this may backfire on him. And he shouldn’t care too much about the works of pros. I mean they had to start at the beginning and they improved through feedback. After seeing what his words are, the only fellows who’ll say bad things to him would be trolls without any good intention at all. I can admire his modesty, but I really want to read some more of his work.

    1. Mr. Satan is supposed to be bad, though, like trashy romance novel bad, and is probably already in that analogy somewhere. A youtube video explaining the origin of the names in DB series said that Yamcha is like an appetizer or side dish, he gets the fight started, but isn’t the main event. So, while I like what we have read so far, I can’t argue with the author if he feels like a Yamcha among those other names.

  1. I love the author’s comparison, however he’s giving off a Marty/George McFly impression with a fear of failure holding them back.

Now the big question, what is your opinion on the series?

      1. I hear you, I’m in his boat as well… I’ve been pushing off my web novel posting of my first few chapters while looking at rewriting it yet again thinking the flow is horrid. I’ve finalized my story line but I’m not quiet happy with how the detailed sections are coming together.

Well hopefully some day down the road his mind changes & we see it in English :)

Don’t he knows that there’s lots of amateur novels being translated?
And there are many being translated that after months or years becomes a published one, this just show that most of the translators have a good eye u.u
…. but then again… what’s this LAST BOSS?

  3. I beg to differ, I definitely don’t think his story is lacking compared to the published works out there. It’s not like SAO or Log Horizon is amazing. His first work is amauteurish but it definitely isn’t bad.

Well thanks for translating what you did translate.
I enjoyed it and look forward to him becoming confident enough in his works in the future.

  7. I don’t know if you will pass this message to the autor but if i was talking to him, this is what i would said to him:

You are not a “pro”? What is the difference between a pro and a novice? The experience (i believe) and what is the best way as autor to have more experience? The feedback.
I’m French, and like a LOT of other people (spanish, germain….) i read in english and comment in english. If your work is translate in english (in the internet even better) you will have the comment feedback of people from everywhere. So you will gain more experience.
I really LOVE the teaser of your work and pray for be able to read more. If you fail you win, you will be able to learn from your failure (“why did i fail?”) And your next chapter &/or story will be even better.
So that it, i wish to be able to read “A wild Last Boss appeared” in english one day. Until then don’t give up, it’s a good job.

    1. Well said. IMO though, no one here is going to criticize or help him improve in anyway, because he can’t read English like you can. Also, not everyone is looking to improve. Some people just write as a hobby, a way to vent their imaginations, and telling them to get better is selfish I think.

  8. You should have expected this. It happens 95% of the time. Other translators don’t usually seek permission, but go under the premise, what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

    1. Is this another ‘95% of all statistics are made up on the spot’ or something? And well, it’s different if I have an excuse not to ask (they’re getting publicised and can’t say ‘yes’ no matter what they actually feel) but if they don’t have such a problem, I would like to respect them as people, and not just story-laying chickens.

      2. It actually isn’t that made up if you had a single clue of the world to be honest. The author was clearly trying to be polite to you, since he can’t actually stop you from doing it. If he was really so timid about his work he wouldn’t release it on the internet in the first place.
No one who actually takes his hobby/work seriously would want some random guy they know nothing about coming, taking his novel and releasing over the internet unsupervised, even if it’s for fun. They would always go through a professional or even a friend, where they actually establish a contract and have control on the quality of release. You fit none of those.
I’ll come back once in a while to watch you get slammed down by the next author.

No uh, that’s what I was saying to begin with. Japanese people just don’t straight out say things like that.

Yeah, that’s the thing. The experiences of other translators has told me differently. At least not 95%. And two different authors have given me an implicit okay, so that’s a 66% for me.

          Where are you getting 95%?

Get bashed because your work being compared with hugely popular series (I guess it’s what you give as examples) by global readers (which I believe he didn’t understand our way of thinking because diff in culture) will surely make you demotivated.

    Thanks for your effort tho

Well, I guess I could read the raws myself. Hmmm.

    1. It really is definitely worth it. It’s tough at first but really broadens the content you can dive into and being able to read the RAWs lets you access the original content that hasn’t been distorted by translation. The sheeprabbit takes a lot of effort to remain faithful to the original content but some translators might as well be writing fan-fiction.

  23. Fail by web novel author. Why do you believe overseas people must read higher quality stuff than Japanese readers. A popular blog offered to pick up your series. That’s like a famous publisher offering to print your books (only without any money involved.) Why will you not use this opportunity to get more support! Inferiority complexes will not help your writing get better. You have the courage to publish your novel online. Something most writers lack. Take that courage to the next level and conquer the world like your character!
Seriously thanks for trying though Este.

    1. Seriously though why does he think people overseas read stuff that is so much better than his story?
      Ok rant over.
Maybe the reason why he has such low confidence is because he is writing everything on the spot as soon as he thinks it up and just publishes it then? It would be possible for the quality to vary if he does that.
      P.S.
Completely off topic but have you got the new keyboard yet?

Cause frankly this is one of the best novels i read in the first 3 chapters, i still go back to the old emails i got that contained the translated chapters to read them. Would be nice to see more chapters. Just saying.
